Search

In gamma-ray spectroscopy, a pulse pile-up occurs when a gamma-ray hits the detector within a time period shorter than the duration of the pulse induced by a preceding gamma-ray. The resulting pulse is the sum of two overlapping pulses. At a high counting rate, the pulse pile-up can lead to significant loss of data and/or deterioration of the measured gamma-ray energy spectrum. If the temporal separation of consecutive gamma-ray events is small enough, the resulting pile-up pulse exhibits only a single peak. Such events are described as peak pile-ups. It is not trivial to detect and correct peak pile-ups. Consequently, such events are typically wrongly reconstructed as a single pulse or rejected by the pile-up correction algorithms developed to date. We study a least-squares fitting algorithm modified to include detection and correction of peak pile-ups. Performance of the proposed algorithm is studied using data measured with LaBr 3 :Ce scintillator and a 400 MBq 137Cs source as well as with artificially synthesized pile-up data. The pile-up correction success rate grows rapidly with the temporal separation of piled-up pulses and reaches 50% as soon as the pulses are separated by a time at least of the order of the single pulse rise time. A success rate exceeding 90% is reached for the temporal separation equal to about twice the rise time. The reconstruction efficiency measured as the overall rate of the successful reconstruction of the double-pulse pile-up is about 92%.

We report on the construction and commissioning of the high-efficiency CAESium-iodide scintillator ARray CAESAR, a device designed for in-beam γ ‐ray spectroscopy experiments utilizing fast beams of rare isotopes at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) at Michigan State University (MSU). CAESAR consists of 192 CsI(Na) crystals, totaling 290 kg of active scintillator material. For 1 MeV γ rays, a full-energy-peak efficiency of 35% is achieved at an in-beam energy resolution of better than 10% FWHM after event-by-event Doppler reconstruction of the γ rays emitted by nuclei moving with velocities of v / c ∼ 0.3 – 0.4 . The spectral quality of the array allows for the identification of γ ‐ray transitions with intensities of several 10 counts in the full-energy peak and thus opens new avenues for the study of the most exotic nuclei available at the NSCL for in-beam spectroscopy.

A detailed, universal simulation tool for the Recoil Distance Method lifetime measurements at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) is presented. The measurements are made with the Koln-NSCL plunger-SeGA setup and utilize fast, secondary beams of exotic nuclei provided by the Coupled Cyclotron Facility and the A1900 fragment separator. The simulation tool, built upon GEANT4 and Root toolkits, incorporates all relevant aspects of a plunger experiment. The tool is applied in two ways. First, to aid in the design of new experiments by facilitating the choice of optimal experimental conditions. Second, to aid in off-line analysis of the experimental data and in particular to deduce the lifetime by comparison of experimental and simulated peak shapes in the γ -ray energy spectra. All the important features of the simulation tool are described, followed by examples of the application of the tool in the cases of real experiments completed or proposed at NSCL.

The unbound isotopes 10Li, 12Li and 13Li have been observed after nucleon-knockout reactions at relativistic energies with 11Li and 14Be beams impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. The channels , and were analysed in the ALADIN-LAND setup at GSI. The 10Li data confirm earlier findings, while the 12Li and 13Li nuclei were observed for the first time. The relative-energy spectrum shows that the ground state of 12Li can be described as a virtual s-state with a scattering length of -13.7(1.6) fm. A broad energy spectrum was found for the channel. Based on the assumption that the relative-energy spectrum is dominated by a correlated background presumably stemming from initial correlations in the 14Be ground-state, evidence for a 13Li resonance at 1.47(31) MeV above the threshold with a width around 2 MeV has been found.

We report on the first in-beam $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy of \nuc{23}{Al} using two different reactions at intermediate beam energies: inelastic scattering off \nuc{9}{Be} and heavy-ion induced one-proton pickup, \nuc{9}{Be}(\nuc{22}{Mg},\nuc{23}{Al}$+\gamma$)X, at 75.1 MeV/nucleon. A $\gamma$-ray transition at 1616(8) keV -- exceeding the proton separation energy by 1494 keV -- was observed in both reactions. From shell model and proton decay calculations we argue that this $\gamma$-ray decay proceeds from the core-excited $7/2^+$ state to the $5/2^+$ ground state of \nuc{23}{Al}. The proposed nature of this state, $[\nuc{22}{Mg}(2^+_1) \otimes \pi d_{5/2}]_{7/2+}$, is consistent with the presence of a gamma-branch and with the population of this state in the two reactions., Comment: Physics Letters B, accepted

The scintillator material LaBr 3 :Ce, which was discovered in 2001, has grown in popularity for a variety of applications in homeland security and nuclear medicine. In this paper we investigate its use for nuclear science spectroscopy applications in the context of in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy with fast ion beams. In such experiments, the Doppler broadening of the gamma-ray line measured with a finite-size detector in the laboratory fundamentally limits the achievable energy resolution. For a typical experiment this effect is of the order of 3%. With the intrinsic energy resolution of LaBr 3 :Ce better than 3% FWHM at 662 keV, and its favorable stopping power, it could be a nearly ideal scintillator for gamma-ray spectroscopy applications with fast beams. Results from in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy measurements using two LaBr 3 :Ce scintillators are presented and compared to results from segmented germanium detectors. Results from these measurements suggest that LaBr 3 :Ce based scintillation arrays can provide a viable tool for many experiments. Additionally, we show that the excellent timing properties of LaBr 3 :Ce can significantly reduce background events in the gamma-ray spectra.

The neutron-rich isotopes 129–133Sn were studied in a Coulomb excitation experiment at about 500 AMeV using the FRS-LAND setup at GSI. From the exclusive measurement of all projectile-like particles following the excitation and decay of the projectile in a high-Z target, the energy differential cross section can be extracted. At these beam energies dipole transitions are dominating, and within the semi-classical approach the Coulomb excitation cross sections can be transformed into photoabsorption cross sections. In contrast to stable Sn nuclei, a substantial fraction of dipole strength is observed at energies below the giant dipole resonance (GDR). For 130Sn and 132Sn this strength is located in a peak-like structure around 10 MeV excitation energy and exhibits a few percent of the Thomas-Reiche Kuhn (TRK) sum-rule strength. Several calculations predict the appearance of dipole strength at low excitation energies in neutron-rich nuclei. This low-lying strength is often referred to as pygmy dipole resonance (PDR) and, in a macroscopic picture, is discussed in terms of a collective oscillation of excess neutrons versus the core nucleons. Moreover, a sharp rise is observed at the neutron separation threshold around 5 MeV for the odd isotopes. A possible contribution of 'threshold strength', which can be described within the direct-breakup model is discussed. The results for the neutron-rich Sn isotopes are confronted with results on stable nuclei investigated in experiments using real photons.

A systematic study of isotopic effects in the break-up of projectile spectators at relativistic energies has been performed with the ALADiN spectrometer at the GSI laboratory. Searching for signals of criticality in the fragment production we have applied the model independent universal fluctuations theory already proposed to track criticality signals in multifragmentation to our data. Yields of neutrons produced by a 238U ion beam of 1 GeV/nucleon kinetic energy impinging on a thick Fe target were measured resulting in distributions differential in neutron angle (0° 50 MeV). The data serve in radiation protection planning for next-generation rare-isotope beam facilities. The experimental data are contrasted with predictions from transport codes as currently used in radiation shield design studies.

Inelastic scattering of loosely bound nuclei by Coulomb interaction at intermediate energies (400?600 MeV/nucleon) has been utilized as a spectroscopic tool for exotic nuclei. The observed electromagnetic dipole (E1) strength above the one neutron threshold of neutron-rich C, Be, B and O isotopes can be explained by a non-resonant transition of a neutron into the continuum. The shape of these strength distributions reflects properties of the wavefunction of the released neutron in the nucleus and hence ground-state properties of these isotopes. Neutron capture cross-sections such as for the 14C(n,?) 15C reaction which are of astrophysical relevance can be deduced indirectly.

The ground-state structure of the near-drip-line nucleus 23O has been investigated in a one-neutron Coulomb breakup reaction. Differential cross sections d σ / d E * for electromagnetic excitation of 23O projectiles (422 MeV/nucleon) incident on a lead target have been obtained from the measurement of the momenta of all breakup products including γ rays. The analysis of the deduced dipole-transition probability into the continuum infers a 2 s 1 / 2 ⊗ O 22 ( 0 + ) ground state configuration with a spectroscopic factor of 0.77(10) and thus a ground-state spin I π ( O 23 ) = 1 / 2 + , resolving earlier conflicting experimental findings. Final-state interaction is of significant influence, an effective reduced scattering length for low-energy p 3 / 2 neutron scattering could be derived from the data.

Dipole excitations of unstable short-lived nuclei has been investigated experimentally by utilizing the electromagnetic-excitation process with high-energy secondary beams. From an exclusive measurement of the neutron-decay channels, differential cross sections with respect to excitation energy, which are directly related to the photo-absorption cross section and accordingly to the dipole-strength function, have been derived. Light neutron-rich nuclei in the mass range fromA = 11 toA = 23 with mass-over-charge ratios up toA/Z≈ 2.8 have been investigated systematically. Much in contrast to stable nuclei, low-lying dipole excitations well below the giant dipole resonance region have been observed as a general phenomenon for these neutron-proton asymmetric nuclei. For the neutron-rich oxygen isotopes, for instance, low-lyingE1 strength has been observed exhausting about 10% of the classical dipole sum rule below 15 MeV excitation energy. A quantitative analysis of low-lying threshold strength for loosely bound nuclei indicates that the characteristics of the dipole strength is directly related to the ground-state single-particle structure of the valence nucleon in the projectile.

The role of proton shell effects in the structure of the N=28 isotones 45Cl and 44S has been studied via one-proton knockout from 45Cl. We compare measured γ-ray intensities, inclusive and partial knockout cross sections, and the inclusive momentum distribution of outgoing 44S particles with shell-model and reaction-theory predictions. The strong population in this reaction of the recently identified 41+ state in 44S, identified through its subsequent γ-ray decay energy, makes a compelling case for a Jπ=3/2+ ground state in 45Cl.

Expérience au NSCL; A systematic investigation of the inclusive cross sections for single-nucleon knockout reactions from p-shell nuclei has been performed. A total of seven reactions were studied for projectiles with masses between A = 7 and 10, having a wide range of nucleon separation energies. Results were obtained for a range of incident beam energies and targets. These differences were found to have a minimal impact on the deduced cross sections. Experimental results were compared to theoretical predictions based on variational Monte Carlo (VMC) nuclear structure calculations, whose radial overlap functions and neutron and proton densities were included in the reaction description. These results are compared with the conventional model, developed for heavier nuclei, that uses shell-model and Hartree-Fock structure inputs. The VMC-based calculations agreed with the experimental data for several reactions where deeply bound nucleons are removed but does not describe some of the more weakly bound nucleon removal cases with comparable accuracy.

The performance of the LAND neutron detector is studied. Using an event-mixing technique based on one-neutron data obtained in the S107 experiment at the GSI laboratory, we test the efficiency of various analytic tools used to determine the multiplicity and kinematic properties of detected neutrons. A new algorithm developed recently for recognizing neutron showers from spectator decays in the ALADIN experiment S254 is described in detail. Its performance is assessed in comparison with other methods. The properties of the observed neutron events are used to estimate the detection efficiency of LAND in this experiment., 16 pages, 8 figures

The N/Z dependence of projectile fragmentation at relativistic energies has been studied with the ALADIN forward spectrometer at the GSI Schwerionen Synchrotron (SIS). Stable and radioactive Sn and La beams with an incident energy of 600 MeV per nucleon have been used in order to explore a wide range of isotopic compositions. For the interpretation of the data, calculations with the statistical multifragmentation model for a properly chosen ensemble of excited sources were performed. The parameters of the ensemble, representing the variety of excited spectator nuclei expected in a participant-spectator scenario, are determined empirically by searching for an optimum reproduction of the measured fragment-charge distributions and correlations. An overall very good agreement is obtained. The possible modification of the liquid-drop parameters of the fragment description in the hot freeze-out environment is studied, and a significant reduction of the symmetry-term coefficient is found necessary to reproduce the mean neutron-to-proton ratios /Z and the isoscaling parameters of Z, 23 pages, 29 figures, published in Physical Review C

gamma-ray decays from excited states in {sup 30}Ne and inclusive and exclusive cross sections were measured in the {sup 9}Be({sup 32}Mg,{sup 30}Ne+gamma)X two-proton knockout reaction at incident beam energies of 99.7 and 86.7 MeV/nucleon. The measured cross section is suppressed compared to calculations and is indicative of a reduced overlap of initial and final state wave functions in {sup 32}Mg and {sup 30}Ne. We interpret this reduction as due to large 4p4h amplitudes present in the {sup 30}Ne ground state wave function, but not {sup 32}Mg. Such large intruder components are predicted to help stabilize the heavier fluorine isotopes against neutron emission.

A Gamma-ray spectroscopic study of excited states of isobaric multiplets has been performed in recent years, with a view to gaining a quantitative understanding of energy differences between excited states in terms of a range of Coulomb and other isospin breaking phenomena. Recently, the experimental programme has been augmented by a study of isobaric analogue states of mirror nuclei populated in mirrored fragmentation reactions. In this presentation, recent results on the [Formula: see text] analogue states in the [Formula: see text] mirror pair 53 Ni /53 Mn will be summarised. In this work, further strong evidence is found for the need to include an anomalous isospin-breaking two-body matrix element for angular-momentum couplings of J = 2, in addition the expected Coulomb contribution, in order to account for the experimental data.

The recent assertion that shape coexistence occurs in the neutron-rich isotope $^{43}\mathrm{S}$ implies that a state observed at 940 keV in a previous study is a rotational excitation of the deformed ground state. Here we use results from two intermediate-energy reactions to demonstrate that this state---assigned an energy of 971 keV in the present work---is indeed a rotational state. This result strengthens the case for shape coexistence in $^{43}\mathrm{S}$.

Isospin-breaking effects have been studied for the first time in T=(3/2) isobaric analog states. Gamma decays have been observed from T{sub z}=-(3/2) nuclei, {sup 49}Fe and {sup 53}Ni, presented here in new level schemes, and mirror energy differences have been computed following observation of analog states in {sup 49}V and {sup 53}Mn, respectively. Shell-model calculations in the fp shell are in good agreement with the data and reveal the importance of non-Coulomb isospin-breaking effects in T=(3/2) isobaric analog states. A two-step fragmentation process was developed to allow access to highly proton-rich nuclei and to produce each member of a mirror pair via mirrored fragmentation of a {sup 56}Ni secondary beam. This work represents the first study using this technique and demonstrates the power of this approach for future studies of isobaric analog states in very proton-rich systems.

Neutron hole states in the exotic $N=27$ isotope $^{44}\mathrm{Cl}$ have been populated using the intermediate-energy single-neutron knockout reaction $^{9}\mathrm{Be}(^{45}\mathrm{Cl},^{44}\mathrm{Cl})\mathrm{X}$. The momentum distribution of the residual $^{44}\mathrm{Cl}$ nuclei after direct population of the ground state is consistent with removal of an $l=1$ neutron. This observation and comparison with a shell-model calculation imply that ${p}_{3/2}$ neutrons from above the $N=28$ major shell closure play important roles in the ground states of both $^{44}\mathrm{Cl}$ and $^{45}\mathrm{Cl}$. The present result is significant because $^{44}\mathrm{Cl}$ is even closer to the valley of stability than $^{43}\mathrm{S}$, where a similar result was recently obtained using a $g$-factor measurement.

The ``island of the inversion'' isotope $^{31}\mathrm{Mg}$ was investigated using an intermediate energy proton knockout reaction from $^{32}\mathrm{Al}$ at 90 MeV/nucleon at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. A negligible cross section to the ground state supports an intruder-dominant configuration in $^{31}\mathrm{Mg}$. The partial cross sections to excited final states preferentially populate configurations in the $^{31}\mathrm{Mg}$ residues which have no neutron excitations across the $N=20$ shell closure. There is strong evidence that the reaction populates the $3/{2}^{+}$ and $5/{2}^{+}$ states which correspond with the neutron-hole states predicted by the shell model with the model space truncated above the $\mathit{sd}$-shell.

Absolute transition probabilities for the first 2{sup +} states in {sup 110,114}Pd were measured using the recoil distance Doppler shift technique following projectile Coulomb excitation at intermediate beam energy. This technique was applied for the first time to projectiles produced in a primary fragmentation reaction, which get Coulomb excited in a secondary reaction. The {sup 110}Pd data was used to check the novel experimental technique as well as the data analysis procedure, which is based on the examination of {gamma}-ray line shapes. Whereas the measured B(E2) value for {sup 110}Pd agrees very well with the literature, the value obtained for {sup 114}Pd differs considerably. The new experimental data are compared to calculations in the framework of the Interacting Boson Model. The data are also used to test the novel concept of valence proton symmetry, which allows for extrapolation of nuclear properties to very neutron-rich nuclei.

We report on the use of the one-proton knockout reaction from {sup 44}S to determine the location of d{sub 5/2} proton strength in neutron-rich {sup 43}P. The results are used to test two shell-model frameworks with different pictures of the evolution of single-proton energies along the N=28 isotones near the neutron dripline. We observe a concentration of d{sub 5/2} proton hole strength near 1 MeV in excitation energy. This result favors the recent shell-model interaction of Utsuno et al. [Eur. Phys. J. Spec. Top. 150, 187 (2007)] and provides additional evidence for an oblate shape for {sup 42}Si.

In-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy of Fe-66,Fe-68 following intermediate-energy one- and two-proton knockout from cobalt and nickel secondary beams has been performed at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. New transitions have been observed in Fe-66 and Fe-68. This is the first observation of gamma-ray transitions in Fe-68. In addition, Cr-64 was produced using the Be-9(Fe-66,Cr-64)X two-proton knockout reaction. An unexpectedly low inclusive cross section is observed for this reaction, an order of magnitude smaller than for the Be-9(Ni-68,Fe-66)X reaction. This observation is discussed in terms of a significant structural difference between Fe-66 and Cr-64 and considerable admixtures of nu(pf)(n-2) (g(9/2))(+2) configurations in the ground and excited states of Cr-64 at N = 40.

Both one-proton and one-neutron knockout reactions were performed with fast beams of two asymmetric, neutron-deficient rare isotopes produced by projectile fragmentation. The reactions are used to probe the nucleon spectroscopic strengths at both the weakly and strongly bound nucleon Fermi surfaces. The one-proton knockout reactions 9Be(28S,27P)X and 9Be(24Si,23Al)X probe the weakly bound valence proton states and the one-neutron knockout reactions and 9Be(28S, 27S)X and 9Be(24Si, 23Si)X the strongly bound neutron states in the two systems. The spectroscopic strengths are extracted from the measured cross sections by comparisons with an eikonal reaction theory. The reduction of the experimentally deduced spectroscopic strengths, relative to the predictions of shell-model calculations, is of order 0.8–0.9 in the removal of weakly bound protons and 0.3–0.4 in the knockout of the strongly bound neutrons. These results support previous studies at the extremes of nuclear binding and provide further evidence that in asymmetric nuclear systems the nucleons of the deficient species, at the more-bound Fermi surface are more strongly correlated than those of the more weakly bound excess species.

The neutron-rich nucleus $^{30}\mathrm{Na}$ in the vicinity of the ``Island of Inversion'' was investigated using intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation. A single $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray transition was observed and attributed to the ${3}_{1}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{2}_{\mathrm{gs}}^{+}$ decay. A transition probability of $B(E2;{2}_{\mathrm{gs}}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{3}_{1}^{+})=147(21) {e}^{2} {\mathrm{fm}}^{4}$ was determined and found in agreement with a previous experiment and with large-scale shell-model calculations. Evidence for the strong excitation of the ${4}_{1}^{+}$ state predicted by the shell-model calculations was not observed.

The discriminant-analysis method has been applied to optimize the exotic-beam charge recognition in a projectile fragmentation experiment. The experiment was carried out at the GSI using the fragment separator (FRS) to produce and select the relativistic secondary beams, and the ALADIN setup to measure their fragmentation products following collisions with Sn target nuclei. The beams of neutron poor isotopes around 124La and 107Sn were selected to study the isospin dependence of the limiting temperature of heavy nuclei by comparing with results for stable 124Sn projectiles. A dedicated detector to measure the projectile charge upstream of the reaction target was not used, and alternative methods had to be developed. The presented method, based on the multivariate discriminant analysis, allowed to increase the efficacy of charge recognition up to about 90%, which was about 20% more than achieved with the simple scalar methods., Comment: 6 pages, 7 eps figures, elsart, submitted to Nucl. The possibility of studying particle-like states near the Fermi surfaces of exotic nuclei by using measurements of heavy-ion-induced single-nucleon pickup reactions with in-flight separated rare-isotope beams is discussed. The analysis of an exploratory data set for the intermediate-energy Be-9(Ne-20,Na-21)X proton pickup reaction measured using a Ne-20 beam at 63 MeV per nucleon is reported. The data are compared with expectations based on model calculations of the transfer reaction cross sections and the Na-21 residue spectroscopy prediction by the sd-shell model. The measured cross sections are broadly consistent with these expectations.

By exploiting Coulomb dissociation of high-energy radioactive beams of the neutron-rich nuclei $^{129\ensuremath{-}132}\mathrm{Sn}$ and $^{133,134}\mathrm{Sb}$, their dipole-strength distributions have been measured. A sizable fraction of ``pygmy'' dipole strength, energetically located below the giant dipole resonance, is observed in all of these nuclei. A comparison with available pygmy resonance data in stable nuclei ($^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ and $N=82$ isotones) indicates a trend of strength increasing with the proton-to-neutron asymmetry. On theoretical grounds, employing the RQRPA approach, a one-to-one correlation is found between the pygmy strength and parameters describing the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy, and in turn with the thicknesses of the neutron skins. On this basis, by using the experimental pygmy strength, parameters of the nuclear symmetry energy (${a}_{4}=32.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.8$ MeV and ${p}_{o}=2.3\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.8$ MeV/fm${}^{3}$) are deduced as well as neutron-skin thicknesses ${R}_{n}\ensuremath{-}{R}_{p}$ of $0.24\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04$ fm for $^{132}\mathrm{Sn}$ and of $0.18\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.035$ fm for $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$, both doubly magic nuclei. Astrophysical implications with regard to neutron stars are briefly addressed.

We report on the first determination of the ${2}_{1}^{+}$ energy of $^{20}\mathrm{Mg}$, the most neutron-deficient Mg isotope known to exist. The result, $E({2}_{1}^{+})=1598(10)$ keV, obtained from in-beam \ensuremath{\gamma}-ray spectroscopy following the two-neutron removal from a $^{22}\mathrm{Mg}$ secondary beam, is discussed in the framework of the isobaric mass multiplet equation (IMME). Resulting predictions for the excitation energies of the $T=2,{2}^{+}$ states in the $^{20}\mathrm{F}$ and $^{20}\mathrm{Na}$ isobars are presented. The mirror energy difference, $E({2}_{1}^{+},$$^{20}\mathrm{Mg}$$)\ensuremath{-}E({2}_{1}^{+},$$^{20}\mathrm{O}$$)=\ensuremath{-}77(10)$ keV, is compared to a recent prediction within the nuclear shell model based on the ``${\mathrm{USD}}^{m}$ - gap Z14'' modification of the universal $\mathit{sd}$ (USD) effective interaction.

The N/Z dependence of projectile fragmentation at relativistic energies has been studied in a recent experiment at the GSI laboratory with the ALADiN forward spectrometer coupled to the LAND neutron detector. Besides a primary beam of 124Sn, also secondary beams of 124La and 107Sn delivered by the FRS fragment separator have been used in order to extend the range of isotopic compositions of the produced spectator sources. With the achieved mass resolution of \Delta A/A \approx 1.5%, lighter isotopes with atomic numbers Z \le 10 are individually resolved. The presently ongoing analyses of the measured isotope yields focus on isoscaling and its relation to the properties of hot fragments at freeze-out and on the derivation of chemical freeze-out temperatures which are found to be independent of the isotopic composition of the studied systems. A novel method for picosecond lifetime measurements of excited gamma-ray emitting nuclear states has been developed for fast beams from fragmentation reactions. A test measurement was carried out with a beam of 124Xe at an energy of ~55 MeV/u. The beam ions were Coulomb excited to the first 2+ state on a movable target. Excited nuclei emerged from the target and decayed in flight after a distance related to the lifetime. A stationary degrader positioned downstream with respect to the target was used to further reduce the velocity of the excited nuclei. As a consequence, the gamma-ray decays from the 2+ excited state that occurred before or after traversing the degrader were measured at a different Doppler shift. The gamma-ray spectra were analyzed from the forward ring of the Segmented Germanium Array; this ring positioned at 37 deg. simultaneously provides the largest sensitivity to changes in velocity and the best energy resolution. The ratio of intensities in the peaks at different Doppler shifts gives information about the lifetime if the velocity is measured. A systematic study of isospin effects in the breakup of projectile spectators at relativistic energies has been performed with the ALADiN spectrometer at the GSI laboratory (Darmstadt). Four different projectiles 197Au, 124La, 124Sn and 107Sn, all with an incident energy of 600 AMeV, have been used, thus allowing a study of various combinations of masses and N/Z ratios in the entrance channel. The measurement of the momentum vector and of the charge of all projectile fragments with Z>1 entering the acceptance of the ALADiN magnet has been performed with the high efficiency and resolution achieved with the TP-MUSIC IV detector. The Rise and Fall behavior of the mean multiplicity of IMFs as a function of Zbound and its dependence on the isotopic composition has been determined for the studied systems. Other observables investigated so far include mean N/Z values of the emitted light fragments and neutron multiplicities. Qualitative agreement has been obtained between the observed gross properties and the predictions of the Statistical Multifragmentation Model., 10 pages,7 figure, 18th Nuclear Physics Division Conference of the EPS, Prague, submitted to Nucl. Electromagnetic and nuclear inelastic scattering of the halo nucleus ${}^{11}\mathrm{Be}$ have been investigated by a measurement of the one-neutron removal channel, utilizing a secondary ${}^{11}\mathrm{Be}$ beam with an energy of 520 MeV/nucleon impinging on lead and carbon targets. All decay products, i.e., ${}^{10}\mathrm{Be}$ fragments, neutrons, and $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays have been detected in coincidence. Partial cross sections for the population of ground and excited states in ${}^{10}\mathrm{Be}$ were determined for nuclear diffractive breakup as well as for electromagnetically induced breakup. The partial cross sections for ground-state transitions have been differentiated further with respect to excitation energy, and the dipole-strength function associated solely with transitions of the halo ${2s}_{1/2}$ neutron to the continuum has been derived. The extracted dipole strength integrated from the neutron threshold up to 6.1 MeV excitation energy amounts to ${0.90(6)e}^{2}{\mathrm{fm}}^{2}.$ A spectroscopic factor for the $\ensuremath{\nu}{2s}_{1/2}{\ensuremath{\bigotimes}}^{10}\mathrm{Be}{(0}^{+})$ single-particle configuration of 0.61(5) and a root-mean-square radius of the ${2s}_{1/2}$ neutron wave function of 5.7(4) fm have been deduced.

The excitation of the double-phonon giant dipole resonance was observed in heavy projectile nuclei impinging on targets of high nuclear charge with energies of 500‐700 MeV/nucleon. New experimental data are presented for 136 Xe and 238 U together with further analysis of earlier data on 208 Pb. Differential cross sections ds/dE* and ds/du for electromagnetic excitations were deduced. Depending on the isotope, cross sections appear to be enhanced in comparison to those expected from a purely harmonic nuclear dipole response. The cumulative effect of excitations of two-phonon states composed of one dipole and one quadrupole phonon, of predicted anharmonicities in the double-phonon dipole response, and of damping of the dipole resonance during the collision may account for the discrepancy. In addition, decay properties of two-phonon resonances were studied and compared to that of a statistical decay.

The JET 2019–2020 scientific and technological programme exploited the results of years of concerted scientific and engineering work, including the ITER-like wall (ILW: Be wall and W divertor) installed in 2010, improved diagnostic capabilities now fully available, a major neutral beam injection upgrade providing record power in 2019–2020, and tested the technical and procedural preparation for safe operation with tritium. Research along three complementary axes yielded a wealth of new results. Firstly, the JET plasma programme delivered scenarios suitable for high fusion power and alpha particle (a) physics in the coming D–T campaign (DTE2), with record sustained neutron rates, as well as plasmas for clarifying the impact of isotope mass on plasma core, edge and plasma-wall interactions, and for ITER pre-fusion power operation. The efficacy of the newly installed shattered pellet injector for mitigating disruption forces and runaway electrons was demonstrated. Secondly, research on the consequences of long-term exposure to JET-ILW plasma was completed, with emphasis on wall damage and fuel retention, and with analyses of wall materials and dust particles that will help validate assumptions and codes for design and operation of ITER and DEMO. Thirdly, the nuclear technology programme aiming to deliver maximum technological return from operations in D, T and D–T benefited from the highest D–D neutron yield in years, securing results for validating radiation transport and activation codes, and nuclear data for ITER.
