Abstract

PANDA (anti-proton annihiliation at Darmstadt) is planned to be one of the four main experiments at the future international accelerator complex FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) in Darmstadt, Germany. It is going to address fundamental questions of hadron physics and quantum chromodynamics using cooled antiproton beams with a high intensity and and momenta between 1.5 and 15 GeV/c. PANDA is designed to reach a maximum luminosity of 2 × 1032 cm−2 s. Most of the physics programs require an excellent particle identification (PID). The PID of hadronic states at the forward endcap of the target spectrometer will be done by a fast and compact Cherenkov detector that uses the detection of internally reflected Cherenkov light (DIRC) principle. It is designed to cover the polar angle range from 5° to 22° and to provide a separation power for the separation of charged pions and kaons up to 3 standard deviations (s.d.) for particle momenta up to 4 GeV/c in order to cover the important particle phase space. This document describes the technical design and the expected performance of the novel PANDA disc DIRC detector that has not been used in any other high energy physics experiment before. The performance has been studied with Monte-Carlo simulations and various beam tests at DESY and CERN. The final design meets all PANDA requirements and guarantees sufficient safety margins.

Abstract

The favored photon sensors for the DIRC (detection of internally reflected Cherenkov light) detectors at the PANDA (Anti-proton Annihilation at Darmstadt) experiment at FAIR (Facility for anti-proton and ion research) are micro-channel-plate photomultipliers (MCP-PMTs). The main problem until a few years ago was the limited lifetime of the MCP-PMTs caused by a rapid decrease in quantum efficiency (QE) of the photo cathode (PC) with increasing integrated anode charge (IAC). These limitations are overcome by applying an atomic layer deposition (ALD) coating on the MCPs, as recently done by PHOTONIS and Hamamatsu. During the last years’ tests of lifetime enhanced MCP-PMTs were performed and their results were compared. For this, the QE was measured in dependence of the IAC as function of the wavelength and position dependent across the PC. The best performing tubes show a lifetime increase compared to not enhanced devices by a factor > 50 with an IAC > 13 C ∕ cm 2 . Additionally, performance results of new 2 inch Hamamatsu tubes and a new high QE PHOTONIS tube are presented.

Abstract

The antiproton experiment PANDA at FAIR is designed to bring hadron physics to a new level in terms of scope, precision and accuracy. In this work, its unique capability for studies of hyperons is outlined. We discuss ground-state hyperons as diagnostic tools to study non-perturbative aspects of the strong interaction, and fundamental symmetries. New simulation studies have been carried out for two benchmark hyperon-antihyperon production channels: $\bar{p}p \to \bar{\Lambda}\Lambda$ and $\bar{p}p \to \bar{\Xi}^+\Xi^-$. The results, presented in detail in this paper, show that hyperon-antihyperon pairs from these reactions can be exclusively reconstructed with high efficiency and very low background contamination. In addition, the polarisation and spin correlations have been studied, exploiting the weak, self-analysing decay of hyperons and antihyperons. Two independent approaches to the finite efficiency have been applied and evaluated: one standard multidimensional efficiency correction approach, and one efficiency independent approach. The applicability of the latter was thoroughly evaluated for all channels, beam momenta and observables. The standard method yields good results in all cases, and shows that spin observables can be studied with high precision and accuracy already in the first phase of data taking with PANDA., Comment: 26 pages, 16 figures. Abstract

We report on the search for the rare decay η → π 0 e + e − which is of interest to study C violation in the electromagnetic interaction which would indicate contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model, since the allowed decay via a two-photon intermediate state is strongly suppressed. The experiment has been performed using the WASA-at-COSY installation, located at the COSY accelerator of the Forschungszentrum Julich, Germany. In total 3 × 10 7 events of the reaction p d → 3 He η have been recorded at an excess energy of Q = 59.8 MeV . Based on this data set the C parity violating decay η → π 0 γ ⁎ → π 0 e + e − via a single-photon intermediate state has been searched for, resulting in new upper limits of Γ ( η → π 0 e + e − ) / Γ ( η → π + π − π 0 ) 3.28 × 10 − 5 and Γ ( η → π 0 e + e − ) / Γ ( η → all ) 7.5 × 10 − 6 ( CL = 90 % ), respectively.

Abstract

The Endcap Disc DIRC (EDD) for PANDA has been designed to identify traversing pions, kaons and protons in the future PANDA experiment. Its central part is a 2 cm thick fused silica plate. Focussing optics are attached to the outer rim of the plate, outside of the acceptance of the experiment. Fast, high-resolution MCP-PMTs, designed to register single Cherenkov photons, have been tested in magnetic field. Filters limit the spectral acceptance of the sensors to reduce dispersion effects and to extend their lifetime. A compact and fast readout is realized with ASICs. Analytical reconstruction algorithms allow for fast particle identification. The angular resolution of a DIRC prototype has been simulated in Monte Carlo and confirmed in a test beam. The final detector will be able to provide a 4 σ π / K separation up to a momentum of 4 GeV / c .

Abstract

Microchannel-plate (MCP) PMTs are the favored photon sensors for the DIRC detectors of the PANDA experiment at FAIR. Until recently the main drawback of MCP-PMTs were serious aging effects which led to a limited lifetime due to a rapidly decreasing quantum efficiency (QE) of the photo cathode (PC) as the integrated anode charge (IAC) increased. In the latest models of PHOTONIS and Hamamatsu an innovative atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique is applied to overcome these limitations. During the last five years comprehensive aging tests with ALD coated MCP-PMTs were performed and the results were compared to tubes treated with other techniques. The QE in dependence of the IAC was measured as a function of the wavelength and the position across the PC. For the best performing tubes the lifetime improvement in comparison to the older MCP-PMTs is a factor of > 50 based on an IAC of meanwhile > 10 C / cm 2 . In addition, the performance results of a new 2-in. ALD coated MCP-PMT prototype from Hamamatsu with a very high position resolution (128×6 anode pixels) is presented and the first conclusions from investigations concerning the PC aging mechanism will be discussed.

Abstract

The search for He 4 - η bound states was performed with the WASA-at-COSY facility via the measurement of the excitation function for the d d → He 3 n π 0 and d d → He 3 p π − processes. The deuteron beam momentum was varied continuously between 2.127 GeV/c and 2.422 GeV/c, corresponding to the excess energy for the d d → He 4 η reaction ranging from Q = − 70 MeV to Q = 30 MeV . The luminosity was determined based on the d d → He 3 n reaction and the quasi-free proton–proton scattering via d d → p p n s p e c t a t o r n s p e c t a t o r reactions. The excitation functions, determined independently for the measured reactions, do not reveal a structure which could be interpreted as a narrow mesic nucleus. Therefore, the upper limits of the total cross sections for the bound state production and decay in d d → ( He 4 - η ) b o u n d → He 3 n π 0 and d d → ( He 4 - η ) b o u n d → He 3 p π − processes were determined taking into account the isospin relation between the both of the considered channels. The results of the analysis depend on the assumptions of the N ⁎ (1535) momentum distribution in the anticipated mesic- He 4 . Assuming, as in the previous works, that this is identical with the distribution of nucleons bound with 20 MeV in He 4 , we determined that (for the mesic bound state width in the range from 5 MeV to 50 MeV) the upper limits at 90% confidence level are about 3 nb and about 6 nb for n π 0 and p π − channels, respectively. However, based on the recent theoretical findings of the N ⁎ (1535) momentum distribution in the N ⁎ - He 3 nucleus bound by 3.6 MeV, we find that the WASA-at-COSY detector acceptance decreases and hence the corresponding upper limits are 5 nb and 10 nb for n π 0 and p π − channels respectively.

Abstract

Microchannel plate (MCP) PMTs are very attractive photon sensors for low light level applications in strong magnetic fields. However, until recently the main drawback of MCP-PMTs was their aging behavior which manifests itself in a limited lifetime due to a rapidly decreasing quantum efficiency (QE) of the photo cathode (PC) as the integrated anode charge (IAC) increases. In the latest models of PHOTONIS, Hamamatsu, and BINP novel techniques are applied to avoid these aging effects which are supposed to be mainly caused by feedback ion impinging on the PC and damaging it. For more than four years we are running a long-term aging test with new lifetime-enhanced MCP-PMT models by simultaneously illuminating various PMTs with roughly the same photon rate. This allows a fair comparison of the lifetime of all investigated MCP-PMTs and will give some insight into the best techniques to be applied for a lifetime enhancement. In this paper the results of comprehensive aging tests will be discussed. Gain, dark count rate and QE were investigated for their dependence on the IAC. The QE was measured spectrally resolved and as a function of the position across the PC to identify regions where the damage develops first. For the best performing tubes the lifetime improvement compared to former MCP-PMTs is a factor of ∼ 50 based on an IAC of meanwhile > 10 C / cm 2 . This breakthrough in the lifetime of MCP-PMTs was achieved by coating the MCP pores with an atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique.

Abstract

Various theoretical calculations based on QCD or hadronic interactions predict that in addition to the recently observed dibaryon resonance d⁎(2380) with I(JP)=0(3+) there should also exist a dibaryon resonance with mirrored quantum numbers I(JP)=3(0+). We report here on a search for such a NN-decoupled state in data on the pp→ppπ+π+π−π− reaction. Since no clear-cut evidence has been found, we give upper limits for the production cross section of such a resonance in the mass range 2280–2500 MeV., This work has been supported by DFG (CL 214/3-1), STFC (ST/L00478X/1) and by the Polish National Science Center through grants Nos. Abstract

The PANDA experiment is one of the four large experiments being built at FAIR in Darmstadt. It will use a cooled antiproton beam on a fixed target within the momentum range of 1.5 to 15 GeV/c to address questions of strong QCD, where the coupling constant $\alpha_s \gtrsim 0.3$. The luminosity of up to $2 \cdot 10^{32} cm^{-2}s^{-1}$ and the momentum resolution of the antiproton beam down to \mbox{$\Delta$p/p = 4$\cdot10^{-5}$} allows for high precision spectroscopy, especially for rare reaction processes. Above the production threshold for open charm mesons the production of kaons plays an important role for identifying the reaction. The DIRC principle allows for a compact particle identification for charged particles in a hermetic detector, limited in size by the electromagnetic lead tungstate calorimeter. The Barrel DIRC in the target spectrometer covers polar angles between $22^\circ$ and $140^\circ$ and will achieve a pion-kaon separation of 3 standard deviations up to 3.5 GeV/$c$. Abstract

The $\overline{{\rm{P}}}\mathrm{ANDA}$ (anti-Proton ANnihiliation at DArmstadt) experiment will be one of the four flagship experiments at the new international accelerator complex FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) in Darmstadt, Germany. $\overline{{\rm{P}}}\mathrm{ANDA}$ will address fundamental questions of hadron physics and quantum chromodynamics using high-intensity cooled antiproton beams with momenta between 1.5 and 15 GeV/c and a design luminosity of up to 2 × 1032 cm−2 s−1. Excellent particle identification (PID) is crucial to the success of the $\overline{{\rm{P}}}\mathrm{ANDA}$ physics program. Hadronic PID in the barrel region of the target spectrometer will be performed by a fast and compact Cherenkov counter using the detection of internally reflected Cherenkov light (DIRC) technology. It is designed to cover the polar angle range from 22° to 140° and will provide at least 3 standard deviations (s.d.) π/K separation up to 3.5 GeV/c, matching the expected upper limit of the final state kaon momentum distribution from simulation. This documents describes the technical design and the expected performance of the $\overline{{\rm{P}}}\mathrm{ANDA}$ Barrel DIRC detector. The design is based on the successful BaBar DIRC with several key improvements. The performance and system cost were optimized in detailed detector simulations and validated with full system prototypes using particle beams at GSI and CERN. The final design meets or exceeds the PID goal of clean π/K separation with at least 3 s.d. over the entire phase space of charged kaons in the Barrel DIRC.

Abstract

The DIRC detectors of the PANDA experiment at FAIR will use multi-anode MCP-PMTs as photon sensors. After long and extensive R&D work the performance parameters of the recent 2” MCP-PMT models are converging towards the required values. The lifetime of most ALD-coated MCP-PMTs is well surpassing the DIRC requirements with the best tube currently reaching > 22 C/cm2 integrated anode charge without aging. The performance of the most advanced MCP-PMTs from PHOTONIS and Hamamatsu fulfill basically all requirements with a highlight being the high detective quantum efficiency (DQE) of almost 30% for the PHOTONIS 9002108. The improvements of the latest MCP-PMT models compared to former tubes are emphasized in this paper. In addition, some performance features of a recently developed 2” MCP-PMT by Photek Ltd are presented and discussed.

Abstract

Microchannel-plate (MCP) PMTs were identified as the only suitable photon sensors for the two DIRC detectors of the PANDA experiment at FAIR. As the long-standing aging problem of MCP-PMTs was recently overcome by coating the MCP pores with an atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique, further improved 2 ″ MCP-PMTs were investigated. The best PHOTONIS device has reached a lifetime of > 20 C/cm2 integrated anode charge without any sign of aging. Also the newly developed 2 ″ MCP-PMTs of Hamamatsu are maturing and are usable in high rate environments. The status of our long-term lifetime measurements and the performance parameters of the currently most advanced ALD-coated MCP-PMTs from PHOTONIS and Hamamatsu are presented. In addition, first results obtained with a new quality assurance setup for MCP-PMTs are discussed. This setup consists of a high performance DAQ system to measure the response of ≥ 64 anode pixels simultaneously. The system allows to study and quantify background parameters like position dependent dark count rates and ion afterpulsing as well as temporal and spacial distributions of recoil electrons and the effects of electronic and charge-sharing crosstalk among the anode pixels.

Abstract

The PANDA experiment at the future Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will address fundamental questions of hadron physics with unprecedented precision. To reach this goal excellent Particle Identification (PID) is essential over a large range of particle momenta and solid angles. Most of the phase space will be covered by two innovative DIRC (Detection of Internally Reflected Cherenkov light) detectors. The Endcap Disc DIRC and Barrel DIRC will cover the polar angle range from 5 to 22°and 22 to 140°, respectively. Both detectors rely on high precision optical components, lifetime-enhanced Microchannel Plate PMTs (MCP-PMTs), and fast readout electronics.

Abstract

New data on the production of single neutral pions in the $ pd\rightarrow {}^{3}\mathrm{He} \pi^{0}$ reaction are presented. For fifteen proton beam momenta between $ p_{p}=1.60$ GeV/c and $ p_{p}=1.74$ GeV/c, differential cross sections are determined over a large fraction of the backward hemisphere. Since the only previous systematic measurements of single-pion production at these energies were made in collinear kinematics, the present work constitutes a significant extension of the current knowledge on this reaction. Even this far above the production threshold, significant changes are found in the behaviour of the angular distributions over small intervals in beam momentum.

Abstract

This letter reports a first quantitative analysis of the contribution of higher partial waves in the charge symmetry breaking reaction dd→4Heπ0 using the WASA-at-COSY detector setup at an excess energy of Q=60MeV. The determined differential cross section can be parametrized as dσ/dΩ=a+bcos2⁡θ⁎, where θ⁎ is the production angle of the pion in the center-of-mass coordinate system, and the results for the parameters are a=(1.55±0.46(stat)+0.32−0.8(syst))pb/sr and b=(13.1±2.1(stat)−2.7+1.0(syst))pb/sr. The data are compatible with vanishing p-waves and a sizable d-wave contribution. This finding should strongly constrain the contribution of the Δ isobar to the dd→4Heπ0 reaction and is, therefore, crucial for a quantitative understanding of quark mass effects in nuclear production reactions.

Abstract

New data on both total and differential cross sections of the production of η mesons in proton–deuteron fusion to He3η in the excess energy region 13.6MeV≤Qη≤80.9MeV are presented. These data have been obtained with the WASA-at-COSY detector setup located at the Forschungszentrum Jülich, using a proton beam at 15 different beam momenta between pp=1.60GeV/c and pp=1.74GeV/c. While significant structure of the total cross section is observed in the energy region 20MeV≲Qη≲60MeV, a previously reported sharp variation around Qη≈50MeV cannot be confirmed. Angular distributions show the typical forward-peaking that was noted earlier. For the first time, it is possible to study the development of these angular distributions with rising excess energy over a wide interval.

Abstract

At the international FAIR laboratory, an upcoming significant enlargement of the GSI installations near Darmstadt, Germany, the PANDA antiproton experiment will investigate fundamental questions of hadron physics in the charm quark energy range. Antiprotons in the 1.5 to15 GeV/c momentum range will interact with gas jet or pellet fixed targets. The Endcap Disc DIRC (Detection of Internally Reflected Cherenkov light) covers the forward endcap solid angle of the PANDA target spectrometer to positively identify charged kaons. Monte-Carlo simulations indicate that from 1 up to 4 GeV/c one can achieve kaon–pion separation with a separation power of at least 3 standard deviations. For the upcoming CERN test beam in August 2018 the read-out electronics has been upgraded to the TOFPET-ASIC Version 2.

Abstract

Cherenkov detectors using the DIRC (Detection of Internally Reflected Cherenkov Light) principle are foreseen for particle identification in the P ¯ ANDA experiment at FAIR. Promising sensors for the detection of the Cherenkov light are the so-called micro-channel plate (MCP) photomultipliers (PMT). They have an excellent time resolution, can be operated at high gain for single photon detection and have a high resistivity against magnetic fields. The disadvantage of these devices was their limited lifetime, due to damage by feedback ions on the photocathode. The lifetime of various types of MCP-PMTs from different manufactures has been tested under conditions similar to that in the P ¯ ANDA experiment. The sensors are assembled in one setup, to ensure the same illumination conditions. The measurement procedure requires permanent monitoring of the illumination and interruptions after about 2–3 weeks to measure dark count rate, gain and spectral quantum efficiency of all sensors. Furthermore surface scans of the whole photocathode are done every 2–4 months to determine faster aging areas. The latest results show very good lifetime performance for MCP-PMTs, where the MCPs have been treated with the atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique.

Abstract

The PANDA experiment at the new Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research in Europe (FAIR) at GSI, Darmstadt, will study fundamental questions of hadron physics and QCD using high-intensity cooled antiproton beams with momenta between 1.5 and 15 GeV/c. Efficient Particle Identification for a wide momentum range and the full solid angle is required for reconstructing the various physics channels of the PANDA program. Hadronic Particle Identification in the barrel region of the detector will be provided by a DIRC counter. The design is based on the successful BABAR DIRC with important improvements, such as focusing optics and fast photon timing. Several of these improvements, including different radiator geometries and optics, were tested in particle beams at GSI and at CERN. The evolution of the conceptual design of the PANDA Barrel DIRC and the performance of complex prototypes in test beam campaigns will be discussed.

Abstract

The next generation of high-luminosity experiments requires excellent particle identification detectors which calls for Imaging Cherenkov counters with fast electronics to cope with the expected hit rates. A Barrel DIRC will be used in the central region of the Target Spectrometer of the planned PANDA experiment at FAIR. A single photo-electron timing resolution of better than 100 ps is required by the Barrel DIRC to disentangle the complicated patterns created on the image plane. R&D studies have been performed to provide a design based on the TRB3 readout using FPGA-TDCs with a precision better than 20 ps RMS and custom frontend electronics with high-bandwidth pre-amplifiers and fast discriminators. The discriminators also provide time-over-threshold information thus enabling walk corrections to improve the timing resolution. Two types of frontend electronics cards optimised for reading out 64-channel PHOTONIS Planacon MCP-PMTs were tested: one based on the NINO ASIC and the other, called PADIWA, on FPGA discriminators. Promising results were obtained in a full characterisation using a fast laser setup and in a test experiment at MAMI, Mainz, with a small scale DIRC prototype.

Abstract

The design of the Barrel DIRC detector for the future PANDA experiment at FAIR contains several important improvements compared to the successful BABAR DIRC, such as focusing and fast timing. To test those improvements as well as other design options a prototype was build and successfully tested in 2012 with particle beams at CERN. The prototype comprises a radiator bar, focusing lens, mirror, and a prism shaped expansion volume made of synthetic fused silica. An array of micro-channel plate photomultiplier tubes measures the location and arrival time of the Cherenkov photons with sub-nanosecond resolution. The development of a fast reconstruction algorithm allowed to tune construction details of the detector setup with test beam data and Monte-Carlo simulations.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to develop a planar DIRC detector showing advantages and performance similar to a classical, barrel shaped DIRC, but at smaller polar angles which cannot be accessed using a cylindrical geometry. The device will complement the PANDA Barrel DIRC by covering polar angles from 5° to 22°. The envisaged π /K-separation is ≥ 3 σ up to 4 GeV/c. A major challenge is the adaption of the device to the PANDA environment including a magnetic field of ~1–2 T, high rates and radiation, limited space for optics and sensors as well as the lack of a common first-level trigger. This paper discusses a detector design which forms a compromise between these constraints and available hardware, a specific analytic reconstruction method, a performance estimation based on Geant4 simulations and finally the successful particle identification using a recent R&D prototype.

Abstract

The charged particle identification at the PANDA experiment will be mainly performed with DIRC detectors. Because of their advantageous properties the preferred photon sensors are MCP-PMTs. However, until recently these devices showed serious aging problems which resulted in a diminishing quantum efficiency (QE) of the photo cathode. By applying innovative countermeasures against the aging causes, the manufacturers recently succeeded in drastically improving the lifetime of MCP-PMTs. Especially the application of an ALD coating technique to seal the material of the micro-channels proves very powerful and results in a lifetime of ≈ 6 C / cm 2 integrated anode charge without a substantial QE degradation for the latest PHOTONIS XP85112. This paper will present a comparative measurement of the lifetime of several older and recent MCP-PMTs demonstrating this progress.

Abstract

The PANDA experiment at the future FAIR laboratory at GSI in Darmstadt, Germany, will require excellent particle identification for its study of proton–antiproton reactions in the few GeV energy range. In the confined space of the PANDA Target Spectrometer, two RICH-type Cherenkov detectors mainly aim at pion–kaon separation: a Barrel-DIRC detector patterned after the BaBar-DIRC covering the central angles and a Disc-DIRC detector for the forward theta angle range from 5° to 22°. Such a Disc-DIRC design has not yet been used in particle physics experiments. A demonstrator prototype, one quarter segment scaled to 80% of the PANDA geometry, constructed at Giessen university and equipped with 480 sensor pixels, has measured particles of several GeV/c in a secondary mixed beam delivered by the PS T9 test beamline at CERN in October 2012. A first analysis of the recorded hit patterns is presented.

Abstract

The presently world largest data sample for π 0 → γ e + e − decays studies containing nearly 5 × 10 5 events was collected using the WASA detector at COSY. A search for a dark photon U produced in the π 0 → γ U → γ e + e − decay from the p p → p p π 0 reaction was carried out. An upper limit on the square of the U − γ mixing strength parameter ϵ 2 of 5 × 10 − 6 at 90% CL was obtained for the mass range 20 MeV M U 100 MeV . This result together with other recent experimental limits significantly reduces the M U vs. ϵ 2 parameter space which could explain the presently seen deviation between the Standard Model prediction and the direct measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon.

A description is given of the upgraded photon tagging facility at the MAX IV Laboratory. Two magnetic spectrometers are used to momentum analyze post-bremsstrahlung electrons. The tagged photon range extends from 10 to 180 MeV with an energy resolution of about 300 keV. The system has been operated at rates up to 4×106 photons s-1 MeV −1. Different diagnostic tools are described as well as the experimental program.

Abstract

A Disc DIRC counter is foreseen for the WASA experiment at the COSY proton storage ring in Julich. It shall improve the proton kinetic energy measurement in the forward direction by measuring the proton speed at the two per mille level. The segmentation into four quarter-discs allows to incline the radiator relative to the incoming particles. This lowers the threshold velocity for light propagation inside the DIRC radiator. The construction of a full-scale quarter disc prototype is envisaged within a year.

Abstract

Cooled antiproton beams of unprecedented intensities in the momentum range of 1.5–15 GeV/c will be used for the P ¯ ANDA experiment at FAIR to perform high precision experiments in the charmed quark sector. The proposed P ¯ ANDA detector is a 4 π internal target spectrometer at the HESR allowing the detection and identification of neutral and charged particles generated within the total energy range of the antiproton annihilation products. The detector is divided in a forward spectrometer and a target spectrometer. The charged particle identification in the latter is performed by ring imaging Cherenkov counters employing the DIRC principle.

Abstract

The PANDA experiment at the FAIR upgrade to GSI, Darmstadt, aims to study modern hadronic physics with unprecedented precision. Excellent particle identification of both charged and neutral particles is necessary to achieve the physics aims of PANDA. Two DIRC detectors are foreseen for charged particle identification, one in a barrel configuration for the central region, and the second in a disc configuration for the forward endcap. The design of the forward disc DIRC centres around the novel application of passive chromatic dispersion correction elements, allied with focussing optics, to achieve excellent resolution of Chernekov angle. A system of comprehensive prototype development will show the feasibility of the system. Key to the success of the prototype is fully understanding the production, transport and detection of the Cherenkov photons within the detector. Photon yield and its dependence on the polar angle of the detector have been measured. Observed photon yield is also the basis for subsequent studies into the benefit of chromatic dispersion correction elements, focussing and overall detector performance.

Abstract

The Edinburgh Ge6 Array is an array of 5 stacked HpGe detectors that were designed to detect intermediate energy pions and protons with energy resolutions comparable to magnetic spectrometers but with considerably larger solid angles and energy range acceptances. The array was designed primarily to be used in conjunction with tagged photon spectrometers to study photonuclear reactions. In this article we present results from a test measurement carried out using a secondary beam of π + -particles at the Paul Scherrer Institute, Villigen, Switzerland and describe a pilot study of the 6 Li ( γ , π + ) 6 He reaction carried out using tagged photons at the Institut fur Kernphysik, Mainz, Germany.

Abstract

The powerful particle identification detection system of the P ¯ ANDA (antiProton ANihilations at DArmstadt) experiment contains three Cherenkov detectors. In the forward direction a conventional RICH detector is planned. In the high solenoid field of the target spectrometer thin Cherenkov detectors using the DIRC principle are mandatory and are envisaged in the form of a barrel and a vertical disc. The combination of the time of arrival of the photons with their spatial image determines not only the particle velocity, but also the wavelength of the photons. Therefore dispersion corrections on the lower and upper detection threshold is possible. Investigations concerning the development of a 3D-Barrel-DIRC are discussed as well as two different studies realizing a new Disc-DIRC for the forward angles. One is based on the Time of Propagation (ToP) method the other on the readout with focusing light guides.

Abstract

In the PANDA experiment at FAIR, a Disc DIRC detector is foreseen to realize particle identification in the endcap region of the detector. Two different designs are proposed. One is based on a two-dimensional readout of space coordinates, the other one is based on one space coordinate and the readout of the Time-of-Propagation (ToP). The ToP-DIRC design uses dichroic mirrors to split the spectral range of the Cherenkov photons into two ranges. This allows to reduce dispersion effects and increases the travel path of the photons inside the radiator. A larger ToP helps in discriminating different particle species at large momenta.

Abstract

The P¯ANDA experiment at the planned FAIR facility at GSI, Darmstadt aims at measuring hadronic final states with unprecedented precision and luminosity. Superior particle identification of charged and neutral particles is mandatory to fulfil P¯ANDA's physics aims. DIRC (detection of internally reflected Cherenkov light) counters are foreseen for charged particle identification. A barrel DIRC will cover the central region while a disc DIRC will provide particle identification in the forward region. Three DIRC concepts differing in the radiator geometry and method for dispersion correction are studied. Results are presented on the common issues of radiator material and quality. Photon detection will be discussed as well.

Abstract

The charged particle identification in the barrel region needs a thin detector operating in a strong magnetic field. Both requirements can be met by a Cherenkov detector using the DIRC principle. Combining the time of arrival of the photons with their spatial image determines not only the particles velocity, but also the wavelength of the photons. Therefore, dispersion correction at the lower and upper detection thresholds is possible. Special care has to be taken to couple the photon detector to the barrel radiator bars.

Abstract

Microchannel plate (MCP) photomultipliers (PMTs) are attractive photon sensors for the PANDA DIRC. The gain and the time resolution of different types of MCP-PMTs were studied as a function of the magnetic field and of the field orientation. It was found that for an efficient single photon detection a pore diameter of 10 μ m or less will be needed in the 2 T magnetic field of PANDA. Both gain and time resolution are best with a pore size of 6 μ m . In contrast to the gain the time resolution shows only a weak dependence on the magnetic field and its orientation. The best transit time resolution for single photons was evaluated to be σ ≈ 20 ps with no magnetic field applied.

Abstract

Baryon-to-meson Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDAs) encoding valuable new information on hadron structure appear as building blocks in the collinear factorized description for several types of hard exclusive reactions. In this paper, we address the possibility of accessing nucleon-to-pion ($��N$) TDAs from $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- ��^0$ reaction with the future PANDA detector at the FAIR facility. At high center of mass energy and high invariant mass squared of the lepton pair $q^2$, the amplitude of the signal channel $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- ��^0$ admits a QCD factorized description in terms of $��N$ TDAs and nucleon Distribution Amplitudes (DAs) in the forward and backward kinematic regimes. Assuming the validity of this factorized description, we perform feasibility studies for measuring $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- ��^0$ with the PANDA detector. Detailed simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as on rejection of the most severe background channel, i.e. $\bar{p}p \to ��^+��^- ��^0$ were performed for the center of mass energy squared $s = 5$ GeV$^2$ and $s = 10$ GeV$^2$, in the kinematic regions $3.0 < q^2 < 4.3$ GeV$^2$ and $5 < q^2 < 9$ GeV$^2$, respectively, with a neutral pion scattered in the forward or backward cone $| \cos��_{��^0}| > 0.5 $ in the proton-antiproton center of mass frame. Results of the simulation show that the particle identification capabilities of the PANDA detector will allow to achieve a background rejection factor of $5\cdot 10^7$ ($1\cdot 10^7$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=5$ GeV$^2$, and of $1\cdot 10^8$ ($6\cdot 10^6$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=10$ GeV$^2$, while keeping the signal reconstruction efficiency at around $40\%$. At both energies, a clean lepton signal can be reconstructed with the expected statistics corresponding to $2$ fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. Abstract

The Dalitz plot distribution of the $\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ decay is determined by using a data sample of $1.2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{7}$ $\ensuremath{\eta}$ mesons from the $pd\ensuremath{\rightarrow}^{3}\mathrm{He}\ensuremath{\eta}$ reaction at 1 GeV collected by the WASA detector at COSY.

Abstract

An investigation has been carried out to determine how effectively a stacked HpGe detector with ultra-thin electrical contacts can be used to improve the spectrum shapes for the detection of monoenergetic γ-rays with energies above 2 MeV. Results are presented which show that almost ideal spectrum shapes with a single photopeak and a low intensity lower energy continuum can be achieved using a stacked HpGe detector that was not specifically designed for γ-detection. It is concluded that the spectrum shape could be improved further by developing stacked HpGe detectors with the new ultra-thin electrical contacts specifically for γ-detection.

Abstract

Analyzing powers of pion-proton elastic scattering have been measured at PSI with the Low Energy Pion Spectrometer LEPS as well as a novel polarized scintillator target. Angular distributions between 40 and 120 deg (c.m.) were taken at 45.2, 51.2, 57.2, 68.5, 77.2, and 87.2 MeV incoming pion kinetic energy for pi+ p scattering, and at 67.3 and 87.2 MeV for pi- p scattering. These new measurements constitute a substantial extension of the polarization data base at low energies. Predictions from phase shift analyses are compared with the experimental results, and deviations are observed at low energies., 15 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We present new data for angular distributions and on the cross section ratio of the p + d -> 3He + eta reaction at excess energies of Q = 48.8 MeV and Q = 59.8 MeV. The data have been obtained at the WASA-at-COSY experiment (Forschungszentrum J\"ulich) using a proton beam and a deuterium pellet target. While the shape of obtained angular distributions show only a slow variation with the energy, the new results indicate a distinct and unexpected total cross section fluctuation between Q = 20 MeV and Q = 60 MeV, which might indicate the variation of the production mechanism within this energy interval., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

The reaction 7Li(π+,π−)7B has been measured at incident pion energies of 30–90 MeV. 7Li constitutes the lightest target nucleus, where the pionic charge exchange may proceed as a binary reaction to a discrete final state. Like in the Δ-resonance region the observed cross sections are much smaller than expected from the systematics found for heavier nuclei. In analogy to the neutron halo case of 11Li this cross section suppression is interpreted as evidence for a proton halo in the particle-unstable nucleus 7B.

Abstract

The reaction 93 Nb( π + , π − ) 93 Te has been measured in the energy range T π =30–60 MeV at various scattering angles. At all energies the groundstate transition could be observed, whereas the transition to the double isobaric analog state has been identified unambiguously only at T π =50 MeV. The groundstate transition exhibits a pronounced resonance-like energy dependence which extends the systematics of this peculiar feature to heavy nuclei. An explanation within the d ′ hypothesis is presented.
