Abstract: International audience; The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) has been installed at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (LNL), Italy. In this installation, AGATA will consist, at the beginning, of 13 AGATA triple clusters (ATCs) with an angular coverage of 1π, and progressively the number of ATCs will increase up to a 2π angular coverage. This setup will exploit both stable and radioactive ion beams delivered by the Tandem–PIAVE-ALPI accelerator complex and the SPES facility. The new implementation of AGATA at LNL will be used in two different configurations, firstly one coupled to the PRISMA large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer and lately a second one at Zero Degrees, along the beam line. These two configurations will allow us to cover a broad physics program, using different reaction mechanisms, such as Coulomb excitation, fusion-evaporation, transfer and fission at energies close to the Coulomb barrier. These setups have been designed to be coupled with a large variety of complementary detectors such as charged particle detectors, neutron detectors, heavy-ion detectors, high-energy γ-ray arrays, cryogenic and gasjet targets and the plunger device for lifetime measurements. We present in this paper the conceptual design, characteristics and performance figures of this implementation of AGATA at LNL.

Abstract: Recent measurements of the nuclear level densities and γ-ray strength functions below the neutron thresholds in 180,181,182Ta are used as input in the nuclear reaction code TALYS. These experimental average quantities are utilized in the calculations of the 179,180,181Ta radiative neutron capture cross sections. From the latter, astrophysical Maxwellian-averaged (n,γ) cross sections (MACS) and reaction rates are extracted, which in turn are used in large astrophysical network calculations to probe the production mechanism of 180 Ta. These calculations are performed for two scenarios, the s-process production of 180,181Ta in Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars and the p-process nucleosynthesis of 180Tam in Type-II supernovae. Based on the results from this work, the s-process in stellar evolution is considered negligible in the production of 180Tam whereas 181Ta is partially produced by AGB stars. The new measurements strongly constrain the production and destruction rates of 180Tam at p-process temperatures and confirm significant production of nature’s rarest stable isotope 180Tam by the p-process., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract: Understanding the evolution of level densities in the crossover from spherical to well-deformed nuclei has been a long-standing problem in nuclear physics. We measure nuclear level densities for a chain of neodymium isotopes $^{142,144-151}$Nd which exhibit such a crossover. These results represent to date the most complete data set of nuclear level densities for an isotopic chain between neutron shell-closure and towards mid-shell. We observe a strong increase of the level densities along the chain with an overall increase by a factor of $\approx 170$ at an excitation energy of 7.5 MeV and saturation around mass 150. Level densities calculated by the shell model Monte Carlo (SMMC) are in excellent agreement with these experimental results. Based on our experimental and theoretical findings, we offer an explanation of the observed mass dependence of the level densities in terms of the intrinsic single-particle level density and the collective enhancement., 7 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: The high-spin structures of Ba136 and Ba137 are investigated after multinucleon-transfer (MNT) and fusion-evaporation reactions. Ba136 is populated in a Xe136+U238 MNT reaction employing the high-resolution Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, Italy, and in two Be9+Te130 fusion-evaporation reactions using the High-efficiency Observatory for γ-Ray Unique Spectroscopy (HORUS) at the FN tandem accelerator of the University of Cologne, Germany. Furthermore, both isotopes are populated in an elusive reaction channel in the B11+Te130 fusion-evaporation reaction utilizing the HORUS γ-ray array. The level scheme above the Jπ=10+ isomer in Ba136 is revised and extended up to an excitation energy of approximately 5.5 MeV. From the results of angular-correlation measurements, the Ex=3707- and Ex=4920-keV states are identified as the bandheads of positive- and negative-parity cascades. While the high-spin regimes of both Te132 and Xe134 are characterized by high-energy 12+→10+ transitions, the Ba136E2 ground-state band is interrupted by negative-parity states only a few hundred keV above the Jπ=10+ isomer. Furthermore, spins are established for several hitherto unassigned high-spin states in Ba137. The new results close a gap along the high-spin structure of N

Abstract: 6 pags., 4 figs., The γ-ray emission from the nuclei Fe following Coulomb excitation at bombarding energy of 400-440 AMeV was measured with special focus on E1 transitions in the energy region 4-8 MeV. The unstable neutron-rich nuclei Fe were produced at the FAIR-GSI laboratories and selected with the FRS spectrometer. The γ decay was detected with AGATA. From the measured γ-ray spectra the summed E1 strength is extracted and compared to microscopic quasi-particle phonon model calculations. The trend of the E1 strength with increasing neutron number is found to be fairly well reproduced with calculations that assume a rather complex structure of the 1 states (three-phonon states) inducing a strong fragmentation of the E1 nuclear response below the neutron binding energy., This work was partially supported by INFN (Italy) and STFC (UK), the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet, VR 2010-147, 2011-5253, and 2016-3969), BMBF NuSTAR-AGATA 05P18RDFN9 and BMBF NuSTAR 05P18RDFN1. Abstract: The new Oslo Scintillator Array (OSCAR) has been commissioned at the Oslo Cyclotron Laboratory (OCL). It consists of 30 large volume (diameter 3.5 x 8 inches) LaBr$_3$(Ce) detectors that are used for $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy. The response functions for incident $\gamma$-rays up to 20 MeV are simulated with $\texttt{Geant4}$. In addition, the resolution, and the total and full-energy peak efficiencies are extracted. Abstract: The transitional nucleus Xe131 is investigated after multinucleon transfer in the Xe136+Pb208 and Xe136+U238 reactions employing the high-resolution Advanced γ-Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, Italy, and as an elusive reaction product in the fusion-evaporation reaction Sn124(B11,p3n)Xe131 employing the High-efficiency Observatory for γ-Ray Unique Spectroscopy (HORUS) γ-ray array coupled to a double-sided silicon strip detector at the University of Cologne, Germany. The level scheme of Xe131 is extended to 5 MeV. A pronounced backbending is observed at ω≈0.4MeV along the negative-parity one-quasiparticle νh11/2(α=-1/2) band. The results are compared to the high-spin systematics of the Z=54 isotopes and the N=77 isotones. Large-scale shell-model calculations employing the PQM130, SN100PN, GCN50:82, SN100-KTH, and a realistic effective interaction reproduce the experimental findings and provide guidance to elucidate the structure of the high-spin states. Further calculations in Xe129-132 provide insight into the changing nuclear structure along the Xe chain towards the N=82 shell closure. Proton occupancy in the π0h11/2 orbital is found to be decisive for the description of the observed backbending phenomenon.

Abstract: 20 pags., 12 figs., 14 tabs., A Coulomb-excitation experiment to study electromagnetic properties of Ca42 was performed using a 170-MeV calcium beam from the TANDEM XPU facility at INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. γ rays from excited states in Ca42 were measured with the AGATA spectrometer. The magnitudes and relative signs of ten E2 matrix elements coupling six low-lying states in Ca42, including the diagonal E2 matrix elements of 21+ and 22+ states, were determined using the least-squares code gosia. The obtained set of reduced E2 matrix elements was analyzed using the quadrupole sum rule method and yielded overall quadrupole deformation for 01,2+ and 21,2+ states, as well as triaxiality for 01,2+ states, establishing the coexistence of a weakly deformed ground-state band and highly deformed slightly triaxial sideband in Ca42. The experimental results were compared with the state-of-the-art large-scale shell-model and beyond-mean-field calculations, which reproduce well the general picture of shape coexistence in Ca42., K.H.-K. acknowledges support from the Research Council of Norway under Grant No. 213442. Abstract: Lifetimes of excited states in 107Tc, 109Rh, 111Rh, and 113Rh were measured at GANIL using the Recoil-Distance Doppler Shift method. The neutron-rich nuclei were produced in fission reactions in inverse kinematics with a 238U beam impinging on a 9Be target. Fission fragments were identified event-by-event in the ray-tracing spectrometer VAMOS++ and correlated with prompt $\gamma$ rays observed around the target position with the EXOGAM Ge detector array. Several lifetimes were obtained for states in the positive-parity yrast bands in the four nuclei and compared to triaxial particle-rotor calculations. The results clarify the configuration for the strongest positive-parity band in 107Tc and suggest a gradual increase of triaxial deformation with atomic number Z, reaching almost maximum triaxiality for the neutron-rich Rh nuclei.

The γ decay from the high-lying states of 124Sn was measured using the inelastic scattering of 17O at 340 MeV. The emitted γ rays were detected with high resolution with the AGATA demonstrator array and the scattered ions were detected in two segmented δE-E silicon telescopes. The angular distribution was measured both for the γ rays and the scattered 17O ions. An accumulation of E1 strength below the particle threshold was found and compared with previous data obtained with (γ, γ') and (α, α'γ) reactions. The present results of elastic scattering, and excitation of E2 and E1 states were analysed using the DWBA approach. From this comprehensive description the isoscalar component of the 1- excited states was extracted. Abstract: Nuclear level densities and $\gamma$-ray strength functions of $^{56,57}$Fe have been extracted from proton-$\gamma$ coincidences. A low-energy enhancement in the $\gamma$-ray strength functions up to a factor of 30 over common theoretical E1 models is confirmed. Angular distributions of the low-energy enhancement in $^{57}$Fe indicate its dipole nature, in agreement with findings for $^{56}$Fe. The high statistics and the excellent energy resolution of the large-volume LaBr$_{3}$(Ce) detectors allowed for a thorough analysis of $\gamma$ strength as function of excitation energy. Taking into account the presence of strong Porter-Thomas fluctuations, there is no indication of any significant excitation-energy dependence in the $\gamma$-ray strength function, in support of the generalized Brink-Axel hypothesis., Comment: 24 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in J. Abstract: The high-spin structures and isomers of the N=81 isotones Xe135 and Ba137 are investigated after multinucleon-transfer (MNT) and fusion-evaporation reactions. Both nuclei are populated (i) in Xe136+U238 and (ii) Xe136+Pb208 MNT reactions employing the high-resolution Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, (iii) in the Xe136+Pt198 MNT reaction employing the γ-ray array GAMMASPHERE in combination with the gas-detector array CHICO, and (iv) via a B11+Te130 fusion-evaporation reaction with the HORUS γ-ray array at the University of Cologne. The high-spin level schemesof Xe135 and Ba137 are considerably extended to higher energies. The 2058-keV (19/2-) state in Xe135 is identified as an isomer, closing a gap in the systematics along the N=81 isotones. Its half-life is measured to be 9.0(9) ns, corresponding to a reduced transition probability of B(E2,19/2-→15/2-)=0.52(6) W.u. The experimentally deduced reduced transition probabilities of the isomeric states are compared to shell-model predictions. Latest shell-model calculations reproduce the experimental findings generally well and provide guidance to the interpretation of the new levels.

Abstract: The light krypton isotopes were studied in a series of Coulomb excitation experiments using radioactive beams at GANIL. The static quadrupole moments found in these experiments give firm experimental evidence for the shape coexistence scenario that is based on theoretical calculations and on the systematics of low-lying excited 0+ states. The experimental results are interpreted within a phenomenological two-band mixing model. Configuration mixing calculations based on triaxial Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov calculations with the Gogny D1S effective interaction have been performed and compared to experimental data.

Abstract: Here, the proton spectrum from the 57Fe(α,p) reaction has been measured and analyzed with the Hauser-Feshbach model of nuclear reactions. Different input level density models have been tested. It was found that the best description is achieved with either Fermi-gas or constant temperature model functions obtained by fitting them to neutron resonance spacing and to discrete levels and using the spin cutoff parameter with much weaker excitation energy dependence than it is predicted by the Fermi-gas model.

Abstract: The low-lying states in the odd-odd and unstable isotopes 106, 108In have been Coulomb excited from the ground state and the first excited isomeric state at the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN. With the additional data provided here the $ \pi$ g 9/2 -1 ⊗ $ \nu$ d 5/2 and $ \pi$ g 9/2 -1 ⊗ $ \nu$ g 7/2 multiplets have been re-analyzed and are modified compared to previous results. The observed $ \gamma$ -ray de-excitation patterns were interpreted within a shell model calculation based on a realistic effective interaction. The agreement between theory and experiment is satisfactory and the calculations reproduce the observed differences in the excitation pattern of the two isotopes. The calculations exclude a 6+ ground state in 106In . This is in agreement with the conclusions drawn using other techniques. Furthermore, based on the experimental results, it is also concluded that the ordering of the isomeric and ground state in 108In is inverted compared to the shell model prediction. Limits on B(E2) values have been extracted where possible. A previously unknown low-lying state at 367keV in 106In is also reported.

Abstract: Three low-lying 8+ states have been identified in 192Pb . A newly observed cascade of $ \gamma$ -rays built directly on the 8+ 1 state is compared to the previously identified, weakly rotational band above the 11- $ \pi$ i 13/2 , h 9/2 isomer in the same nucleus, and to analogous structures in 194Pb . The similarity of all four structures lends support to the suggestion that the 8+ 1 configurations are of a similar oblate deformation to the 11- isomers. The excitation energies of all three 8+ states in 192Pb and 190Pb are compared to systematics. The possibility that one of the 8+ states in 192Pb is associated with a prolate shape is discounted.

Abstract: The structure of low-lying states in the light krypton isotopes 72Kr, 74Kr, and 76Kr has been studied with the finite-range Gogny D1S effective interaction via Hartree–Fock–Bogolyubov based calculations within a configuration-mixing formalism treating axial and triaxial quadrupole deformations. The good overall agreement with the experimental low-lying excitation spectra and matrix elements supports the shape coexistence scenario and a transition of the ground-state shape from oblate in 72Kr to prolate in 76Kr. The triaxial degree of freedom is shown to be crucial to reproduce the experimental data in general and the inversion of the oblate and prolate configurations in particular.

Abstract: Isospin properties of dipole excitations in 74 Ge are investigated using the ({\alpha},{\alpha}'{\gamma}) reaction and compared to ({\gamma},{\gamma}) data. The results indicate that the dipole excitations in the energy region of 6 to 9 MeV adhere to the scenario of the recently found splitting of the region of dipole excitations into two separated parts: one at low energy, being populated by both isoscalar and isovector probes, and the other at high energy, excited only by the electromagnetic probe. Relativistic quasiparticle time blocking approximation (RQTBA) calculations show a reduction in the isoscalar E1 strength with an increase in excitation energy, which is consistent with the measurement., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: A. Vogt et al. ; 12 págs.; 9 figs.; 1 tab., Detailed spectroscopic information on the N∼82 nuclei is necessary to benchmark shell-model calculations in the region. The nuclear structure above long-lived isomers in Xe134 is investigated after multinucleon transfer (MNT) and actinide fission. Xenon-134 was populated as (i) a transfer product in Xe136+U238 and Xe136+Pb208 MNT reactions and (ii) as a fission product in the Xe136+U238 reaction employing the high-resolution Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA). Trajectory reconstruction has been applied for the complete identification of beamlike transfer products with the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA. The Xe136+Pt198 MNT reaction was studied with the γ-ray spectrometer GAMMASPHERE in combination with the gas detector array Compact Heavy Ion Counter (CHICO). Several high-spin states in Xe134 on top of the two long-lived isomers are discovered based on γγ-coincidence relationships and information on the γ-ray angular distributions as well as excitation energies from the total kinetic energy loss and fission fragments. The revised level scheme of Xe134 is extended up to an excitation energy of 5.832 MeV with tentative spin-parity assignments up to 16+. Previous assignments of states above the 7- isomer are revised. Two triaxial strongly deformed bands were identified previously and interpreted as zero- and one-phonon wobbling excitations. As a result of more extensive band search, the level scheme has been considerably extended to include ten new rotational bands and some 630γ-ray transitions. A number of interband linking transitions were revealed, so that all but two bands could be connected with each other. Configurations are proposed for all new bands based on measured observables, with the help of cranked shell model calculations. A γ-ray sequence, previously suggested as a triaxial strongly deformed band based on quasiparticle excitations coexisting with the wobbling excitation in the triaxial potential well, has now been determined to be a signature partner of a coupled band, associated with a normal deformed five-quasiparticle configuration. The possibility of two new bands being associated with triaxial deformation is discussed.

Abstract: Background: Nuclear structure information for the neutron-rich actinide nuclei is important since it is the benchmark for theoretical models that provide predictions for the heaviest nuclei. Purpose: gamma-ray spectroscopy of neutron-rich heavy nuclei in the actinide region. Method: Multinucleon-transfer reactions in Zn-70 + U-238 and Xe-136 + U-238 have been measured in two experiments performed at the INFN Legnaro, Italy. In the Zn-70 experiment the high-resolution HPGe Clover Array (CLARA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA was employed. In the Xe-136 experiment the high-resolution Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) was used in combination with PRISMA and the Detector Array for Multinucleon Transfer Ejectiles (DANTE). Results: The ground-state band (g.s. band) of U-240 was measured up to the 20(+) level and a tentative assignment was made up to the (24(+)) level. Results from gamma gamma coincidence and from particle coincidence analyses are shown. Moments of inertia (MoI) show a clear upbend. Evidence for an extended first negative-parity band of U-240 is found. Conclusions: A detailed comparison with latest calculations shows best agreement with cranked relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (CRHB) calculations for the g.s. band properties. The negative-parity band shows the characteristics of a K-pi = 0 band based on an octupole vibration.

Abstract: Background: Multinucleon transfer reactions (MNT) are a competitive tool to populate exotic neutron-rich nuclei in a wide region of nuclei, where other production methods have severe limitations or cannot be used at all. Purpose: Experimental information on the yields of MNT reactions in comparison with theoretical calculations are necessary to make predictions for the production of neutron-rich heavy nuclei. It is crucial to determine the fraction of MNT reaction products which are surviving neutron emission or fission at the high excitation energy after the nucleon exchange. Method: Multinucleon transfer reactions in Xe-136 + U-238 have been measured in a high-resolution gamma-ray/particle coincidence experiment. The large solid-angle magnetic spectrometer PRISMA coupled to the high-resolution Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) has been employed. Beamlike reaction products after multinucleon transfer in the Xe region were identified and selected with the PRISMA spectrometer. Coincident particles were tagged by multichannel plate detectors placed at the grazing angle of the targetlike recoils inside the scattering chamber. Results: Mass yields have been extracted and compared with calculations based on the GRAZING model for MNT reactions. Kinematic coincidences between the binary reaction products, i.e., beamlike and targetlike nuclei, were exploited to obtain population yields for nuclei in the actinide region and compared to x-ray yields measured by AGATA. Conclusions: No sizable yield of actinide nuclei beyond Z = 93 is found to perform nuclear structure investigations. In-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy is feasible for few-neutron transfer channels in U and the -2p channel populating Th isotopes.

Abstract: Background: The chain of Sm isotopes exhibits a wide range of nuclear shapes and collective behavior. While the onset of deformation for $Ng82$ has been well studied both experimentally and theoretically, fundamental data is lacking for some Sm isotopes with $Nl82$.Purpose: Electromagnetic transition rates represent a sensitive test of theoretical nuclear structure models. Lifetime measurements are furthermore complementary to Coulomb excitation experiments, and the two methods together can give access to spectroscopic quadrupole moments.Method: The lifetime of the ${2}_{1}^{+}$ state in $^{140}\mathrm{Sm}$ was measured with the recoil-distance Doppler shift technique using the reaction $^{124}\mathrm{Te}(^{20}\mathrm{Ne},4\mathrm{n})^{140}\mathrm{Sm}$ at 82 MeV. Theoretical calculations were performed based on a mapped collective Hamiltonian in five quadrupole coordinates (5DCH) and the Gogny D1S interaction.Results: The lifetime of the ${2}_{1}^{+}$ state in $^{140}\mathrm{Sm}$ was found to be 9.1(6) ps, corresponding to a $B(E2;{2}_{1}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{0}_{1}^{+})$ value of 51(4) Weisskopf units. The theoretical calculations are in very good agreement with the experimental result.Conclusions: The $B(E2;{2}_{1}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{0}_{1}^{+})$ value for $^{140}\mathrm{Sm}$ fits smoothly into the systematic trend for the chain of Sm isotopes. The new beyond-mean field calculations are able to correctly describe the onset of collectivity in the Sm isotopes below the $N=82$ shell closure for the first time.

Abstract: A multitude of discrete ${2}^{+}$ states in $^{124}\text{Sn}$ with energy up to 5 MeV were populated and identified with the $(^{17}\text{O}$, $^{17}\mathrm{O}^{\ensuremath{'}}\ensuremath{\gamma})$ reaction at 340 MeV. Cross sections were compared with distorted wave Born approximation predictions and in general a good agreement was found. The measured energy and intensity distributions of the ${2}^{+}$ states are very similar to the predictions based on self-consistent density functional theory and extended QRPA approach accounting for multiphonon degrees of freedom. This provides evidence of the excitation of the pygmy quadrupole resonance in skin nuclei.

Abstract: The average electromagnetic dipole response of levels in the quasicontinuum of $^{197,198}\mathrm{Au}$ has been measured using $(^{3}\mathrm{He},{}^{3}{\mathrm{He}}^{\ensuremath{'}})$ and $(d,p)$ reactions. The extracted $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray strength functions have been normalized according to three model assumptions for the nuclear spin distribution. An enhancement in the energy region ${E}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}=3.0\text{--}6.5$ MeV is observed for both isotopes. The $E1$ component of such excess of strength is studied in detail for $^{198}\mathrm{Au}$ and is interpreted as the pygmy dipole resonance with an energy centroid of $5.9(1)$ MeV and exhausts about $1%$ of the total integrated strength. The pygmy dipole resonance is shown to have a significant impact on the calculated ${}^{197}\mathrm{Au}{(n,\ensuremath{\gamma})}^{198}\mathrm{Au}$ cross section.

Abstract: The high-spin states in Nd-141 were investigated using the Zr-96(Ca-48, 3n) reaction and the EU-ROBALL array. The level scheme has been extended up to an excitation energy of around 16MeV and spin 81/2. Two new bands of dipole transitions and three bands presumably of quadrupole transitions were identified and their connections to low-lying states were established. Cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky and tilted axis cranking calculations are combined in the interpretation of the observed dipole bands. The high-spin bands with assigned quadrupole transitions are interpreted as triaxial bands, while the dipole bands appear in the calculations to exhibit a shape evolution from low-deformation triaxial to spherical shape. They can be classified as magnetic rotation, with transition probabilities that show the characteristic decrease with angular momentum caused by the shears mechanism.

Abstract: Submitted to European Physical Journal A - Expérience GANIL; The odd-Z isotope 255Lr, its daughter 251Md and grand-daughter 247Es were studied in two experiments performed at GANIL and the University of Jyväskylä. The 255Lr nuclei were produced using the cold fusion-evaporation reaction 209Bi(48Ca, 2n)255Lr at a bombarding energy of 217MeV. The single-particle structure and decay properties were investigated using α, γ and electron spectroscopy. The ground-state spin and parity could be assigned for 255Lr (1/2-) and 251Md (7/2-). States corresponding to the 7/2+[633], 7/2-[514] and 1/2-[521] Nilsson orbitals were observed. Results are compared to experimental data obtained in neighbouring isotopes and to Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations using the Skyrme interaction SLy4 and a density-dependent pairing interaction. The position of the 1/2-[521] orbital from the spherical 2f5/2 shell is discussed.

Abstract: Evidence for the decay of non-yrast states in 254No has been observed for the first time in an experiment performed at the University of Jyvaskyla. The experiment employed the JUROGAM array of germanium detectors coupled to the gas-filled recoil separator RITU and the focal-plane spectrometer GREAT. The ground-state rotational band has been tentatively extended up to a spin of 24ℏ and has a smoothly behaving dynamical moment of inertia. It is speculated that the observation of high-energy γ-rays is due to the decay of a K = 3 band-head state.

Abstract: High-spin terminating bands in heavy nuclei were first identified in nuclei around Er-158(90). While examples of special terminating states have been identified in a number of erbium isotopes, almost nothing is known about the states lying beyond band termination. In the present work the high-spin structure of Er-157 has been studied using the Gammasphere spectrometer. The subject of triaxial superdeformation and 'wobbling' modes in Lu nuclei has rightly attracted a great deal of attention. Very recently, four strongly or superdeformed (SD) sequences have been observed in Hf-174 and ultimate cranker calculations predict, such structures may have significant triaxial deformation. We have performed two experiments in an attempt to verify the possible triaxial nature of these bands. A lifetime measurement was performed to confirm the large (and similar) deformation of the bands. In addition, a high-statistics, thin-target experiment was run to search for linking transitions between the SD bands and possible wobbling modes.

Abstract: Matière Nucléaire; International audience; The gamma decay of the nuclei 124,125Ba has been investigated with the EUROBALL array, using the reaction 64Ni+64 Ni at E_{beam} = 255 and 261 MeV. Six new E1 transitions have been found in the nucleus 125Ba, suggesting a significant role of octupole correlations in the origin of its parity doublets. The pi = 3-level of the nucleus 124Ba has been identified for the first time. Its excitation energy is in very good agreement with a prediction based on a microscopic model including octupole interactions.

Abstract: The first excited 2 + states in 54,56,58Cr were populated by Coulomb excitation at relativistic energies and γ rays were measured using the RISING setup at GSI. For 56Cr and 58Cr the B ( E2 , 2 1 + → 0 + ) values relative to the previously known B ( E 2 ) value for 54Cr are determined as 8.7(3.0) and 14.8(4.2) W.u., respectively. The results are consistent with a subshell closure at neutron number N = 32 which was already indicated by the higher energy of the 2 1 + state in 56Cr. Recent large-scale shell model calculations using effective interactions reproduce the trend in the excitation energies, but fail to account for the minimum in the B ( E 2 ) values at N = 32 .

Abstract: The lifetimes of states with spins 26h greater than or equal to I greater than or equal to 18h in the yrast superdeformed band of Pb-192 have been measured using the Doppler shift attenuation method. The results are consistent with a constant quadrupole moment (Q(0)) = 19.6(-0.4)(+0.5)(stat) +/- 2.0(sys) eb. This result is comparable with the values obtained for SD bands in Pb isotopes with N greater than or equal to 112, but could also be onsistent with the smaller quadrupole moment measured in Pb-193. Reasons for the apparently lower deformation of SD Pb-193 (compared to its heavier neighbours) are considered in the light of total Routhian surface calculations, and the question of whether a similarly reduced deformation should be expected in Pb-192 is addressed. 40. Collective structures of the 131Cs nucleus

Abstract: The collective structures of 131Cs have been investigated by in-beam γ-ray spectroscopic techniques following the 124Sn (^11B , 4n) reaction at a beam energy Elab = 57MeV. The previously established rotational bands, built on πg7/2, πd5/2 and the unique-parity πh11/2 orbitals, have been extended and evolve into new bands involving rotationally aligned ν(h11/2)2 and π(h11/2)2 quasiparticles. In addition, a new multiquasiparticle band based on the πg7/2 ⊗ νg7/2 ⊗ νh11/2 configuration has also been observed. Theoretical interpretations for the assigned configurations are discussed in the framework of Total Routhian Surface (TRS) and Tilted Axis Cranking (TAC) model calculations. TAC model calculations predict a decrease in the B(M1) values with increasing rotational frequency for the πg7/2/πd5/2 ⊗ ν(h11/2)2 and πh11/2 ⊗ ν(h11/2)2 bands, thus indicating a magnetic rotation character for these bands.

Abstract: WOS: 000300864200005, The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) is a European project to develop and operate the next generation gamma-ray spectrometer. AGATA is based on the technique of gamma-ray energy tracking in electrically segmented high-purity germanium crystals. This technique requires the accurate determination of the energy, time and position of every interaction as a gamma ray deposits its energy within the detector volume. Reconstruction of the full interaction path results in a detector with very high efficiency and excellent spectral response. The realisation of gamma-ray tracking and AGATA is a result of many technical advances. These include the development of encapsulated highly segmented germanium detectors assembled in a triple cluster detector cryostat, an electronics system with fast digital sampling and a data acquisition system to process the data at a high rate. The full characterisation of the crystals was measured and compared with detector-response simulations. This enabled pulse-shape analysis algorithms, to extract energy, time and position, to be employed. In addition, tracking algorithms for event reconstruction were developed. The first phase of AGATA is now complete and operational in its first physics campaign. In the future AGATA will be moved between laboratories in Europe and operated in a series of campaigns to take advantage of the different beams and facilities available to maximise its science output. Abstract: Prompt and delayed gamma-ray spectroscopy of very neutron-deficient bismuth isotopes 187, 189Bi has been performed using the recoil decay tagging method. A rotational band has been observed in 189Bi and is interpreted as a complete decoupling of a single proton from the deformed lead core. The results for 187Bi suggest a similar structure and coupling scheme. This study gives the first evidence for a prolate band in a light bismuth nucleus and confirms the prolate character of the low-lying rotational band observed in the core nuclei 188Pb and 186Pb.

Abstract: Superdeformed bands in 88Mo and 89Tc were populated using 40Ca-induced fusion-evaporation reactions on 58Ni at a beam energy of 185MeV. Gamma-rays emitted in the reactions were detected using the Gammasphere spectrometer, in coincidence with charged particles detected by the Microball array. A new superdeformed band was assigned to the nucleus 88Mo, leading to a revisit of earlier configuration assignments for superdeformed structures in this nucleus. In particular, the theoretical interpretation of a pair of identical (isospectral) superdeformed bands in 88Mo/89Tc is discussed. The configurations that are assigned to the four SD bands belonging to 88Mo have properties that are predicted to be significantly affected by pair correlations.

Abstract: A multi-nucleon transfer reaction using an 850 MeV 136Xe beam incident on a 198Pt target was used to populate high-spin states in 184W, 14 nucleons from the target. A 4-quasiparticle isomer with $t_{1/2} = 188 \pm 38$ ns has been observed for the first time and its de-excitation through collective and intrinsic structures studied. The results are compared with predictions of blocked BCS Nilsson calculations. Observation of this metastable state completes the tungsten 4-quasiparticle isomer systematics from A = 176 to 186. Mapping out the most yrast 4-quasiparticle isomers in these even-even tungsten isotopes suggests the existence of a highly favoured state in 188W, within reach of current experimental set-ups.

Abstract: The γ-ray strength functions and nuclear level densities of 138La and 139La have been measured below the neutron separation energies. These new data were used to calculate astrophysical Maxwellian-averaged (n, γ) cross-sections to investigate the production and destruction of the p-nucleus 138La in the photodisintegration process. The results confirm the underproduction of 138La in the p-process with respect to the observed abundances and strongly support the ν-process through νe capture on 138Ba as the main contributor to the synthesis of 138La in Type II supernovae., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract: The previously accepted spin values of the 991 and 1599 keV levels in $^{140}\mathrm{Sm}$ have been revised and established as $2{}^{+}$ and $0{}^{(+)}$, respectively. The $\ensuremath{\gamma}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ angular correlation method was used to determine the new spin values. The excited low-spin levels in $^{140}\mathrm{Sm}$ were populated in the $^{140}\mathrm{Eu}{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}^{140}\mathrm{Sm}$ and $^{140}\mathrm{Gd}\ensuremath{\rightarrow} ^{140}\mathrm{Eu}{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}^{140}\mathrm{Sm}$ decays. The $^{140}\mathrm{Gd}$ and $^{140}\mathrm{Eu}$ nuclei were produced in the $^{112}\mathrm{Cd}+^{32}\mathrm{S}$ reaction at a beam energy of 155 MeV.

Abstract: It is almost 80 years since Hans Bethe described the level density as a non-interacting gas of protons and neutrons. In all these years, experimental data were interpreted within this picture of a fermionic gas. However, the renewed interest of measuring level density using various techniques calls for a revision of this description. In particular, the wealth of nuclear level densities measured with the Oslo method favors the constant-temperature level density over the Fermi-gas picture. From the basis of experimental data, we demonstrate that nuclei exhibit a constant-temperature level density behavior for all mass regions and at least up to the neutron threshold., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures
