Abstract: The JSNS^2 (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) experiment aims to search for oscillations involving a sterile neutrino in the eV^2 mass-splitting range. The experiment will search for the appearance of electron antineutrinos oscillated from muon antineutrinos. The electron antineutrinos are detected via the inverse beta decay process using a liquid scintillator detector. A 1MW beam of 3 GeV protons incident on a spallation neutron target produces an intense and pulsed neutrino source from pion, muon, and kaon decay at rest. The JSNS^2 detector is located 24 m away from the neutrino source and began operation from June 2020. The detector contains 17 tonnes of gadolinium (Gd) loaded liquid scintillator (LS) in an acrylic vessel, as a neutrino target. It is surrounded by 31 tonnes of unloaded LS in a stainless steel tank. Optical photons produced in LS are viewed by 120 R7081 Hamamatsu 10-inch Photomultiplier Tubes (PMTs). Abstract: A θ oscillation analysis based on the observed antineutrino rates at the Double Chooz far and near detectors for different reactor power conditions is presented. This approach provides a so far unique simultaneous determination of θ and the total background rates without relying on any assumptions on the specific background contributions. The analysis comprises 865 days of data collected in both detectors with at least one reactor in operation. The oscillation results are enhanced by the use of 24.06 days (12.74 days) of reactor-off data in the far (near) detector. The analysis considers the ν¯ interactions up to a visible energy of 8.5 MeV, using the events at higher energies to build a cosmogenic background model considering fast-neutrons interactions and Li decays. The background-model-independent determination of the mixing angle yields sin(2θ) = 0.094 ± 0.017, being the best-fit total background rates fully consistent with the cosmogenic background model. A second oscillation analysis is also performed constraining the total background rates to the cosmogenic background estimates. While the central value is not significantly modified due to the consistency between the reactor-off data and the background estimates, the addition of the background model reduces the uncertainty on θ to 0.015. Along with the oscillation results, the normalization of the anti-neutrino rate is measured with a precision of 0.86%, reducing the 1.43% uncertainty associated to the expectation. Abstract: We introduce a novel approach to investigate CP violation in the neutrino sector, based on the simultaneous detection of $\nu_e$ and $\bar{\nu}_e$ stemming from the oscillation of $\nu_{\mu}$ and $\bar{\nu}_{\mu}$ produced in the decay at rest of $\pi$s and $\mu$s at a beam dump. This approach relies on a novel liquid scintillator detector technology expected to yield unprecedented identification of $\nu_e$ and $\bar{\nu}_e$ charged-current interactions, which we investigate by means of Montecarlo simulations. Abstract: The removal of radioactivity from liquid scintillator has been studied in preparation of a low background phase of KamLAND. This paper describes the methods and techniques developed to measure and efficiently extract radon decay products from liquid scintillator. We report the radio-isotope reduction factors obtained when applying various extraction methods. During this study, distillation was identified as the most efficient method for removing radon-born lead from liquid scintillator.

Abstract: The oscillation results published by the Double Chooz Collaboration in 2011 and 2012 rely on background models substantiated by reactor-on data. In this analysis, we present a background-model-independent measurement of the mixing angle θ13 by including 7.53 days of reactor-off data. A global fit of the observed antineutrino rates for different reactor power conditions is performed, yielding a measurement of both θ13 and the total background rate. The results on the mixing angle are improved significantly by including the reactor-off data in the fit, as it provides a direct measurement of the total background rate. This reactor rate modulation analysis considers antineutrino candidates with neutron captures on both Gd and H, whose combination yields sin2(2θ13)=0.102±0.028(stat.)±0.033(syst.). The results presented in this study are fully consistent with the ones already published by Double Chooz, achieving a competitive precision. They provide, for the first time, a determination of θ13 that does not depend on a background model.

6. A global fit determination of effective Δm312 from baseline dependence of reactor ν¯e disappearance

Abstract: Recently, three reactor neutrino experiments, Daya Bay, Double Chooz and RENO have directly measured the neutrino mixing angle θ 13 . In this Letter, another important oscillation parameter, effective Δ m 31 2 ( = Δ m ˜ 31 2 ) is measured using baseline dependence of the reactor neutrino disappearance. A global fit is applied to publicly available data and Δ m ˜ 31 2 = 2.95 − 0.61 + 0.42 × 10 − 3 eV 2 , sin 2 2 θ 13 = 0.099 − 0.012 + 0.016 are obtained by setting both parameters free. This result is complementary to Δ m ˜ 31 2 to be measured by spectrum shape analysis. The measured Δ m ˜ 31 2 is consistent with Δ m ˜ 32 2 measured by ν μ disappearance in MINOS, T2K and atmospheric neutrino experiments within errors. The minimum χ 2 is small, which means the results from the three reactor neutrino experiments are consistent with each other.

Abstract: The Double Chooz experiment has determined the value of the neutrino oscillation parameter $\theta_{13}$ from an analysis of inverse beta decay interactions with neutron capture on hydrogen. This analysis uses a three times larger fiducial volume than the standard Double Chooz assessment, which is restricted to a region doped with gadolinium (Gd), yielding an exposure of 113.1 GW-ton-years. The data sample used in this analysis is distinct from that of the Gd analysis, and the systematic uncertainties are also largely independent, with some exceptions, such as the reactor neutrino flux prediction. A combined rate- and energy-dependent fit finds $\sin^2 2\theta_{13}=0.097\pm 0.034(stat.) \pm 0.034 (syst.)$, excluding the no-oscillation hypothesis at 2.0 \sigma. This result is consistent with previous measurements of $\sin^2 2\theta_{13}$.

Abstract: In nuclear reactors, 239Pu are produced along with burn-up of nuclear fuel. 239Pu is subject of safeguard controls since it is an explosive component of nuclear weapon. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is watching undeclared operation of reactors to prevent illegal production and removal of 239Pu. In operating reactors, a huge numbers of anti electron neutrinos ( ν ¯ e ) are produced. Neutrino flux is approximately proportional to the operating power of reactor in short term and long term decrease of the neutrino flux per thermal power is proportional to the amount of 239Pu produced. Thus rector ν ¯ e ʼs carry direct and real time information useful for the safeguard purposes. Since ν ¯ e can not be hidden, it could be an ideal medium to monitor the reactor operation. IAEA seeks for novel technologies which enhance their ability and reactor neutrino monitoring is listed as one of such candidates. Currently neutrino physicists are performing R&D of small reactor neutrino detectors to use specifically for the safeguard use in response to the IAEA interest. In this proceedings of the neutrino2012 conference, possibilities of such reactor neutrinos application and current world-wide R&D status are described.

Abstract: Nuclear reactors generate a huge number of low energy ν ¯ e 's . The reactor neutrinos have been used to study properties of neutrinos since its discovery a half century ago. Recently, KamLAND group finally discovered reactor neutrino oscillation with average baseline 180 km. According to the 3 flavor scheme of standard theory and measured oscillation parameters so far, the reactor neutrino is expected to perform another type of small oscillation at a baseline 1.8 km. KASKA experiment is a project to detect this small oscillation and to measure the last neutrino mixing angle θ 13 by using the world most powerful reactor complex, Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power station. In this proceedings, phenomena of neutrino oscillation and the two reactor oscillation experiments, KamLAND and KASKA, are introduced.

Abstract: We describe a muon track reconstruction algorithm for the reactor anti-neutrino experiment Double Chooz. The Double Chooz detector consists of two optically isolated volumes of liquid scintillator viewed by PMTs, and an Outer Veto above these made of crossed scintillator strips. Muons are reconstructed by their Outer Veto hit positions along with timing information from the other two detector volumes. All muons are fit under the hypothesis that they are through-going and ultrarelativistic. If the energy depositions suggest that the muon may have stopped, the reconstruction fits also for this hypothesis and chooses between the two via the relative goodness-of-fit. In the ideal case of a through-going muon intersecting the center of the detector, the resolution is ∼40 mm in each transverse dimension. High quality muon reconstruction is an important tool for reducing the impact of the cosmogenic isotope background in Double Chooz., National Science Foundation (U.S.), United States. Abstract: The Double Chooz experiment measures the neutrino mixing angle θ13 by detecting reactor ν¯e via inverse beta decay. The positron-neutron space and time coincidence allows for a sizable background rejection, nonetheless liquid scintillator detectors would profit from a positron/electron discrimination, if feasible in large detector, to suppress the remaining background. Standard particle identification, based on particle dependent time profile of photon emission in liquid scintillator, can not be used given the identical mass of the two particles. However, the positron annihilation is sometimes delayed by the ortho-positronium (o-Ps) metastable state formation, which induces a pulse shape distortion that could be used for positron identification. In this paper we report on the first observation of positronium formation in a large liquid scintillator detector based on pulse shape analysis of single events. The o-Ps formation fraction and its lifetime were measured, finding the values of 44% ± 12% (sys.) ± 5% (stat.) and 3.68ns ± 0.17ns (sys.) ± 0.15ns (stat.) respectively, in agreement with the results obtained with a dedicated positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy setup., National Science Foundation (U.S.), United States. Abstract: The Double Chooz experiment presents improved measurements of the neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{13}$ using the data collected in 467.90 live days from a detector positioned at an average distance of 1050 m from two reactor cores at the Chooz nuclear power plant. Several novel techniques have been developed to achieve significant reductions of the backgrounds and systematic uncertainties with respect to previous publications, whereas the efficiency of the $\bar\nu_{e}$ signal has increased. The value of $\theta_{13}$ is measured to be $\sin^{2}2\theta_{13} = 0.090 ^{+0.032}_{-0.029}$ from a fit to the observed energy spectrum. Deviations from the reactor $\bar\nu_{e}$ prediction observed above a prompt signal energy of 4 MeV and possible explanations are also reported. A consistent value of $\theta_{13}$ is obtained from a fit to the observed rate as a function of the reactor power independently of the spectrum shape and background estimation, demonstrating the robustness of the $\theta_{13}$ measurement despite the observed distortion., Comment: 44 pages, 25 figures. 14. Prospects of reactor neutrino experiments

Abstract: Since the energy of a reactor neutrino is a few MeV, all Δ m 12 2 , Δ m 23 2 and Δ m 13 2 oscillations are accessible by reactor neutrino experiments. KamLAND observed the Δ m 12 2 oscillation and currently Double Chooz, RENO and Dayabay experiments are under construction aiming to detect Δ m 13 2 + Δ m 23 2 oscillation. There are still good prospects for future reactor neutrino experiments after them. For example, there is room to further improve sin 2 2 θ 13 accuracy at a baseline of ∼1.5 km, a very precise sin 2 2 θ 12 measurement and the determination of mass hierarchy may be possible at a baseline ∼50 km, and if KamLAND is enlarged to the SuperKamiokande size, better measurement of Δ m 12 2 and sin 2 2 θ 12 will be anticipated. It is important to take into account such possibilities when planning future neutrino program after θ 13 is measured by current experiments.

Abstract: During 1996 the SLD collaboration completed the construction of, and began the operation of, a new vertex detector (VXD3). This detector, based on 96 CCD’s each of 13 cm 2 area, is an upgrade of the original vertex detector of SLD (VXD2), and is made possible by advances in the technology of CCD detectors. New front-end electronics and a new data acquisition system were developed for this upgrade. Its improved characteristics will enhance many SLD measurements, and open the possibility to observe B s 0 -mixing. More than 50 000 Z events obtained with the new vertex detector have been analyzed. Results on the new detector performance (including resolution evaluation) from this first data are presented.

Abstract: This paper describes the design, construction, and initial operation of SLD's upgraded vertex detector which comprises 96 two-dimensional charge-coupled devices (CCDs) with a total of 307 Mpixel. Each pixel functions as an independent particle detecting element, providing space point measurements of charged particle tracks with a typical precision of 4 μm in each co-ordinate. The CCDs are arranged in three concentric cylinders just outside the beam-pipe which surrounds the e+e− collision point of the SLAC Linear Collider (SLC). The detector is a powerful tool for distinguishing displaced vertex tracks, produced by decay in flight of heavy flavour hadrons or tau leptons, from tracks produced at the primary event vertex. The requirements for this detector include a very low mass structure (to minimize multiple scattering) both for mechanical support and to provide signal paths for the CCDs; operation at low temperature with a high degree of mechanical stability; and high speed CCD readout, signal processing, and data sparsification. The lessons learned in achieving these goals should be useful for the construction of large arrays of CCDs or active pixel devices in the future in a number of areas of science and technology.

Abstract: We have measured the $B$ hadron energy distribution in ${Z}^{0}$ decays using a sample of semileptonic $B$ decays recorded in the SLD experiment at SLAC. The energy of each tagged $B$ hadron was reconstructed using information from the lepton and a partially reconstructed charm-decay vertex. We compared the scaled energy distribution with several models of heavy quark fragmentation. The average scaled energy of primary $B$ hadrons was found to be $〈{x}_{{E}_{B}}〉=0.716\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.011(\mathrm{stat}{)}_{\ensuremath{-}0.022}^{+0.021}(\mathrm{syst})$.

Its improved impact parameter resolution, larger solid angle coverage and virtually error-free track linking will enhance the SLD measurement of the polarization-enhanced forward-backward asymmetry for b and c-quarks, increase the precision of the measurement of the b-fraction in hadronic Z decays, and open the possibility to observe B/sub s//sup 0/-mixing. Full separation of primary, secondary and tertiary vertices is accessible. A description of the mechanics and electronics of VXD3 are presented along with results from the first data.

Abstract: We have measured the distributions of the jet energies in {ital e{sup +}e{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}q{bar q}g} events, and of the three orientation angles of the event plane, using hadronic {ital Z{sup 0}} decays collected in the SLD experiment at SLAC. We find that the data are well described by perturbative QCD incorporating vector gluons. Abstract: The SLD collaboration completed construction of a new CCD vertex detector (VXD3) in January 1996 and started data taking in April 1996 with the new system. VXD3 is an upgrade of the original CCD vertex detector, VXD2, which had successfully operated in SLD for three years. VXD3 consists of 96 large area CCDs, each having 3.2 million 20 μm × 20 μm pixels. By reducing the detector material and lengthening the lever arm, VXD3 is expected to improve secondary vertex resolution by about a factor of two compared with VXD2. The new three-layered structure enables stand-alone tracking without any ambiguity and its extended size along the beam direction improves the polar-angle coverage to |cos θ| < 0.85. An overview of this detector system and its initial performance are described.

Abstract: We present measurements of Rb using the SLD at the SLC. The analyses use 2D and 3D impact parameter tags and a displaced 3D vertex tag which all exploit the small size and stability of the e+e- interaction point and the precision 3D CCD pixel vertex detector to achieve high bb¯-tagging efficiencies and purities. The combined measurement yields Rb=0.229±0.011 and is consistent with standard model predictions.

Abstract: Mini-tower beam tests were carried out at a test beam line of KEK-PS in order to study the performance of the prototype level-1 trigger system and drift tubes with field-shapers originally designed for the SDC barrel muon detector at the SSC. A mini-tower of 10 layers, 31 drift tubes in total, and a prototype level-1 trigger module were designed and fabricated for the tests. The spatial resolution of about 230 μm was obtained for the tubes. Relatively high rates of multi-pulse signals were observed for most of the tubes. The trigger module designed at KEK using a logic delta- T method was studied for various trigger logics and its performance was found to be very satisfactory.

Abstract: We present a search for Lorentz violation with 8249 candidate electron antineutrino events taken by the Double Chooz experiment in 227.9 live days of running. This analysis, featuring a search for a sidereal time dependence of the events, is the first test of Lorentz invariance using a reactor-based antineutrino source. No sidereal variation is present in the data and the disappearance results are consistent with sidereal time independent oscillations. Under the Standard-Model Extension (SME), we set the first limits on fourteen Lorentz violating coefficients associated with transitions between electron and tau flavor, and set two competitive limits associated with transitions between electron and muon flavor., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures; (new version after referee's comments)

Abstract: Double Chooz is unique among modern reactor-based neutrino experiments studying ν¯e disappearance in that data can be collected with all reactors off. In this paper, we present data from 7.53 days of reactor-off running. Applying the same selection criteria as used in the Double Chooz reactor-on oscillation analysis, a measured background rate of 1.0±0.4 events/day is obtained. The background model for accidentals, cosmogenic β-n-emitting isotopes, fast neutrons from cosmic muons, and stopped-μ decays used in the oscillation analysis is demonstrated to be correct within the uncertainties. Kinematic distributions of the events, which are dominantly cosmic-ray-produced correlated-background events, are provided. Abstract: The Double Chooz experiment has observed 8,249 candidate electron antineutrino events in 227.93 live days with 33.71 GW-ton-years (reactor power x detector mass x livetime) exposure using a 10.3 cubic meter fiducial volume detector located at 1050 m from the reactor cores of the Chooz nuclear power plant in France. The expectation in case of theta13 = 0 is 8,937 events. The deficit is interpreted as evidence of electron antineutrino disappearance. From a rate plus spectral shape analysis we find sin^2 2{\theta}13 = 0.109 \pm 0.030(stat) \pm 0.025(syst). The data exclude the no-oscillation hypothesis at 99.9% CL (3.1{\sigma}).

Abstract: We report on operational experience with and experimental performance of the SLD barrel Cherenkov Ring Imaging Detector from the 1992 and 1993 physics runs. The liquid (C/sub 6/F/sub 14/) and gas (C/sub 5/F/sub 12/) radiator recirculation systems have performed well, and the drift gas supply system has operated successfully with TMAE for three years. Cherenkov rings have been observed from both the liquid and gas radiators. The number and angular resolution of Cherenkov photons have been measured, and found to be close to design specifications. >

Abstract: We report a measurement of the neutrino-electron elastic scattering rate from 8B solar neutrinos based on a 123 kton-day exposure of KamLAND. The background-subtracted electron recoil rate, above a 5.5 MeV analysis threshold is 1.49+/-0.14(stat)+/-0.17(syst) events per kton-day. Interpreted as due to a pure electron flavor flux with a 8B neutrino spectrum, this corresponds to a spectrum integrated flux of 2.77+/-0.26(stat)+/-0.32(syst) x 10^6 cm^-2s^-1. The analysis threshold is driven by 208Tl present in the liquid scintillator, and the main source of systematic uncertainty is due to background from cosmogenic 11Be. The measured rate is consistent with existing measurements and with Standard Solar Model predictions which include matter enhanced neutrino oscillation., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: We present new constraints on the neutrino oscillation parameters $/textyen Delta m^{2}_{21}$, $/textyen theta_{12}$, and $/textyen theta_{13}$ from a three-flavor analysis of solar and KamLAND data. The KamLAND data set includes data acquired following a radiopurity upgrade and amounts to a total exposure of $3.49 \textyen times 10^{32}$ target-proton-year. Under the assumption of {\textyen it CPT} invariance, a two-flavor analysis (/textyen mbox{$\textyen theta_{13} = 0$}) of the KamLAND and solar data yields the best-fit values $\textyen tan^{2} \textyen theta_{12} = 0.444^{+0.036}_{-0.030}$ and $\textyen Delta m^{2}_{21} = 7.50^{+0.19}_{-0.20} \textyen times 10^{-5} ~ {\textyen rm eV}^{2}$; a three-flavor analysis with $\textyen theta_{13}$ as a free parameter yields the best-fit values $\textyen tan^{2} \textyen theta_{12} = 0.452^{+0.035}_{-0.033}$, $\textyen Delta m^{2}_{21} = 7.50^{+0.19}_{-0.20} \textyen times 10^{-5} ~ {\textyen rm eV}^{2}$, and $\textyen sin^{2} \textyen theta_{13} = 0.020^{+0.016}_{-0.016}$. This $\textyen theta_{13}$ interval is consistent with other recent work combining the CHOOZ, atmospheric and long-baseline accelerator experiments. We also present a new global $\textyen theta_{13}$ analysis, incorporating the CHOOZ, atmospheric and accelerator data, which indicates $\textyen sin^{2} \textyen theta_{13} = 0.009^{+0.013}_{-0.007}$. Abstract: We carried out a study of neutrino detection at the experimental fast reactor JOYO using a 0.76 tons gadolinium loaded liquid scintillator detector. The detector was set up on the ground level at 24.3m from the JOYO reactor core of 140MW thermal power. The measured neutrino event rate from reactor on-off comparison was 1.11\pm1.24(stat.)\pm0.46(syst.)events/day. Although the statistical significance of the measurement was not enough, the background in such a compact detector at the ground level was studied in detail and MC simulation was found to describe the data well. Abstract: Summary form only. The performance of the Cherenkov Ring Imaging Detector (CRID) of the SLD experiment at the SLAC linear collider during the 1992 physics data run is discussed. The barrel CRID is complete and fully operational. Cherenkov rings have been observed from both the liquid and the gas radiators. The rings are associated with particle tracks measured in the central drift chamber and the radius of the ring together with the momentum measurement is used to identify particles. Work is in progress to improve the resolution by better determining the position of the drift boxes, the mirrors, and the central drift chamber relative to one other using data from cosmic rays and Z/sup 0/ chambers. >

Abstract: Free-ion yields from /sup 207/Bi conversion electrons are measured as a function of applied electric field in an ionization chamber filler with tetramethylsilane (TMS) or tetramethylgermanium (TMG), which are purified by simple methods. The mean thermalization length of electrons liberated in the liquid is calculated by fitting a Gaussian form for the distribution function. The total free-ion yield and thermalization length in TMS and TMG are obtained. They are 3.1+or-0.3, 3.5+or-0.2 and 1.91+or-12 AA, 173+or-16 AA, respectively, including the impurity effect in liquid. >

Abstract: The material compatibility and the radiation resistivity of liquid tetramethylgermanium have been examined by monitoring the ionization yield and the electron lifetime in a pulse ionization chamber. There is no deterioration of the liquid quality with hardened lead during one year. Irradiation with 1000 Gy of γ-rays causes some deterioration of the liquid. The electron lifetime for the damage liquid was almost restored to its initial value by repeating the purification several times.

Abstract: All of the major subsystems for the barrel Cerenkov Ring Imaging Detector (CRID) in the SLAC Large Detector (SLD) at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) have now been commissioned. The CRID participated in the SLD engineering run of June-August 1991. In a cosmic ray test at the end of the run, Cerenkov rings were observed for the first time. Initial data for the CRID, including Cerenkov rings, studies of minimum ionizing particles, and data from the fiber optics calibration system are presented. The SLD engineering run and the ensuing dedicated CRID test runs have demonstrated that the system behaves as expected. It has been possible to track particles using ionization in the drift boxes and to reconstruct single electron coordinates very well. The runs have also enabled debugging of this complex system. >

Abstract: The front-end electronics and data acquisition system for the SLD barrel Cherenkov ring imaging detector (CRID) are described. The specifications for this system require a 1% charge division measurement on single e/sup -/ pulses from a wire chamber in the presence of much larger signals. Fast recovery from saturating pulses and noise levels below 2000 electrons root-mean-square for single electron pulses are required. Noise and system performance results are presented for the initial SLD engineering run data. >

Abstract: Radioactive isotopes produced through cosmic muon spallation are a background for rare-event detection in $\nu$ detectors, double-$\beta$-decay experiments, and dark-matter searches. Understanding the nature of cosmogenic backgrounds is particularly important for future experiments aiming to determine the pep and CNO solar neutrino fluxes, for which the background is dominated by the spallation production of $^{11}$C. Data from the Kamioka liquid-scintillator antineutrino detector (KamLAND) provides valuable information for better understanding these backgrounds, especially in liquid scintillators, and for checking estimates from current simulations based upon MUSIC, FLUKA, and GEANT4. Using the time correlation between detected muons and neutron captures, the neutron production yield in the KamLAND liquid scintillator is measured to be $(2.8 \pm 0.3) \times 10^{-4} \mu^{-1} g^{-1} cm^{2}$. For other isotopes, the production yield is determined from the observed time correlation related to known isotope lifetimes. We find some yields are inconsistent with extrapolations based on an accelerator muon beam experiment., Comment: 16 pages, 20 figures

Abstract: The Stanford Large Detector for experimental particle physics detection at the SLAC Linear Collider contains a Cherenkov ring imaging detector (CRID). The barrel CRID mirrors have been successfully produced and installed. The industrial mirror production process, the quality control of the mirrors produced, and the results of the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) reflectivity and mirror-shape accuracy are described. An average reflectivity of at least 80% for light at 160 nm and 85% for light in the 180–230 nm wavelength range has been achieved in the production of over 400 mirrors of a typical size of 30 by 30 cm. The surface roughness and optical distortion measurements imply that the light loss due to scattering is a few percent of the incident light and the angular error due to shape distortion is less than 1 mrad.

Abstract: To help ensure the stable long-term operation of a Cherenkov ring-imaging detector at high efficiency, a comprehensive monitor and control system is being developed. This system will continuously monitor and maintain the correct operating temperatures, and will provide an on-line monitor of the pressures, flows, mixing and purity of the various fluids. In addition, the velocities and trajectories of Cherenkov photoelectrons drifting within the imaging chambers will be measured using a pulsed UV lamp and a fiber-optic light injection system.

Abstract: We have tested extra Z models in the reactions e+e−→μ+μ−, τ+τ− and hadrons in the energy range 50 s GeV using the VENUS detector at the TRISTAN e+e− storage ring. Our data are in good agreement with the standard model prediction ( χ 2 N Df = 2.9 31 ) ). We have obtained 90% confidence-level lower limits of 105, 125 and 231 GeV for the masses of ZΨ, Zη and Zχ bosons which are expected from the E6 grand unified theory. We also place a 90% confidence-level lower limit of 426 GeV for the mass of an extra-Z boson whose couplings to quarks and leptons are assumed to be the same as those for the standard Z boson. Our results exceed the previous experimental limits from the p p collider experiments, although there have been some combined analyses reporting the limits better than those obtained in the present analysis.

Abstract: Sensitivities to sin22theta13 without statistical errors ("systematic limit") are investigated in neutrino oscillation experiments with multiple reactors. Using an analytical approach, we show that the systematic limit on sin22theta13 is dominated by the uncorrelated systematic error sigmau of the detector. Even in an experiment with multidetectors and multireactors, it turns out that most of the systematic errors including the one due to the nature of multiple sources is canceled as in the case with a single reactor plus two detectors, if the near detectors are placed suitably. The case of the KASKA plan (7 reactors and 3 detectors) is investigated in detail, and it is explicitly shown that it does not suffer from the extra uncertainty due to multiple reactors.

Abstract: On-site underground background measurements were performed for the planned reactor-neutrino oscillation experiment KASKA at Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power station in Niigata, Japan. A small-diameter boring hole was excavated down to 70m underground level, and a detector unit for $\gamma$-ray and cosmic-muon measurements was placed at various depths to take data. The data were analyzed to obtain abundance of natural radioactive elements in the surrounding soil and rates of cosmic muons that penetrate the overburden. Abstract: We measure the hadronic branching ratios of the Z0 boson into heavy quarks: Rb=Gamma(Z0->bb)/Gamma(Z0->hadrons) and Rc=Gamma(Z0->cc/Gamma(Z0->hadrons) using a multi-tag technique. The measurement was performed using about 400,000 hadronic Z0 events recorded in the SLD experiment at SLAC between 1996 and 1998. The small and stable SLC beam spot and the CCD-based vertex detector were used to reconstruct bottom and charm hadron decay vertices with high efficiency and purity, which enables us to measure most efficiencies from data. We obtain, Rb=0.21604 +- 0.00098(stat.) +- 0.00073(syst.) -+ 0.00012(Rc) and, Rc= 0.1744 +- 0.0031(stat.) +- 0.0020(syst.) -+ 0.0006(Rb), 37 pages, 8 figures, to be submitted to Phys. Rev. D version 2: changed title to ratios, used common D production fractions for Rb and Rc and corrected Zgamma interference. Identical to PRD submission
