Abstract

The UA1 Collaboration has recently improved its measurement of the beauty production cross-section by including explicit measurements of b b correlations. Using these data we have determined the strong coupling constant α s . The comparison of the measured cross-section for 2-body final states with O ( α s 3 ) QCD predictions yields a measurement of α s (20 GeV) = 0.145 −0.010 exp −0.016 th +0.012 +0.013 , corresponding to α s ( M z ) = 0.113 −0.006 exp −0.009 th +0.007 +0.008 . This is the first theoretically well-defined measurement of α s from a purely hadronic production process. Evaluating α s from cross-sections at different Q 2 -values we find that the running of α s is needed for internal consistency of the UA1 data.

Abstract

We report on a new measurement of B 0 − B 0 mixing at the CERN SppS collider. Mixing is measured in the non-isolated high mass dimoun sample using data from the 1988–1989 collider runs. The measured value of the mixing parameter, χ, is 0.145±0.035(stat.) ± 0.014(syst.). The average of this measurement and that from our 1984–1985 data is ξ= 0.14 ± 0.029 (stat.) ± 0.017 (syst.) assuming fully correlated errors. Using the measurement of ξd from ARGUS and CLEO , we obtain χ = 0.50 ± 0.20, which gives a limit of χs > 0.17 (0.12) at 90% (95%) CL. Including the measurements of χ from the ALEPH and L3 experiments gives χs = 0.53 ± 0.15, and a limit of χs > 0.27 (0.23) at 90% (95%) CL.

Abstract

A significant intermittency signal is observed in 630 GeV p p collisions measured in the UA1 central detector. It occurs with similar magnitude in different variables: pseudorapidity, rapidity and azimuthal angle. The signal increases with decreasing charged particle multiplicity in the event. Its strength in a sample of low p⊥ tracks and its multiplicity dependence are not reproduced by commonly used Monte Carlo models of high energy interactions.

Abstract

We present a search for the decay W±→π±γ, using data taken at the CERN proton-antiproton Collider with the UA1 detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.7 pb−1. We do not observe a signal for such a process: hence we obtain an upper limit on the π±γ decay width of 5.8×10−2Γ (W±→e±v) (95%CL).

Abstract

We report on the first observation of the beauty baryon Λb in an exclusive decay channel at the CERN p p collider. Using 4.7 pb−1 of muon data collected in the 1988/89 collider runs we reconstruct 16±5 Λb's in the decay mode Λ b → J ψΛ above a background of 9±1 events, corresponding to a significance of about five standard deviations. We measure the Λb mass to be mΛb=5640±50±30 MeV/c2. Using the beauty cross-section measured by UA1 we deduce for the product of the production fraction and branching ratio f Λ b Br (Λ b → J ψΛ )=(1.8±1.0)×10 -10 . Our sample contains three-muon event in which the beauty particle opposite to the Λ b is tagged by the third muon. We also observe an indication of a signal in the decay channel B 0 → J ψ K 0∗ with a significance of three standard deviations.

Abstract

We report measurements of b-quark and B-hadron production in pp collisions at √s=630 GeV. We use muon samples to extract beauty production cross-sections over a wide range of transverse momentum in the central rapidity range |y| < 1.5. We compare our results to an O(αs3) QCD prediction and find good agreement over the measured b-quark transverse momentum range 6 GeV/c to 54 GeV/c. Using the shape of the pT and y distribution predicted by QCD to extrapolate our data, we infer a total cross-section for b-quark production at √s=630 GeV of σ(pp→bb+X)=19.3±7(exp.)±9(th.μb.

Abstract

We present results from the barrel depleted uranium/TMP calorimeter modules constructed by the UA1 Collaboration. Electromagnetic and hadronic energy resolutions have been measured using electron and pion beams with momenta in the range 7 to 70 GeV/c. Results on the energy linearity and the spatial uniformity of response are reported. The electromagnetic shower position resolution has been measured as a function of energy using a fine grained position detector placed at a depth of − 3.5small chi, Greek0. The noise arising both from the electronics chain and from the uranium radioactivity is compared with 70 GeV/c muon signals. The ratio of the electron to pion response has been measured both as a function of the energy and of the electric field. The high lateral and longitudinal granularity of the calorimeter and the presence of a position detector have been used to determine the electron pion separation as a function of energy.

Abstract

An analysis of W and Z boson production at UA1, using 4.66 pb −1 of data from the 1988 and 1989 CERN p p Collider runs at s =0.63 TeV , yields R ≡ σ W Br(W→ μ v)/ σ z Br( Z → μμ )=10.4 −1.5 +1.8 stat.±0.8(syst.) We find R =9.5 −1.0 +1.1 (stat.+syst.) when combining all available UA1 data, in both the electron and muon channel, taken in the period 1983–1989. In the framework of the standard model, the value of R is used to infer the total width of the W boson, Γ W tot =2.18 −0.24 +0.26 (exp.)±0.04(theory) GeV/ c 2 .

Abstract

A search for t-quark decay into charged Higgs, t→H + b, with the charged Higgs decaying via the H + → τ + v τ mode, has been done in proton-antiproton collisions at √2 = 0.63 TeV with the UA1 experiment. No evidence for this decay das been observed. Mass limits at 95% and 90% CL for the t-quark and the charged Higgs are presented. The results have also been interpreted in terms of the tan β parameter of a two-doublet Higgs sector.

Abstract

We report on a search for the decays B 0 → μ + μ − , B → μ + μ − X and B d 0 → μ + μ − K 0∗ , which are expected to be rare if mediated by flavor changing neutral currents. Using data collected during the 1984–1989 CERN pp Collider runs, the UA1 search was carried out using μ+ μ− events with 3.9 B 0 d →μ + μ − K 0∗ of of 2.3 × 10−5. Implicatitions for upper limits on the t-quark mass are discussed.

Abstract

We have measured the production cross-section times branching ratio for J/ψ→μ+μ− in pp interactions at √s = 630 GeV in the kinematic range |y| and p T >5 GeV /c, BR ( J /ψ→μ + μ − )σ( p p → J /ψ)=6.18±0.24±0.81 nb . The data sample collected in 1988 and 1989 for an integrated luminosity of 4.7 pb−1 represents a fivefold improvement over the statistics in our earlier study of the J/ψ production process, and the pT distribution which is measured extends to 28 GeV/c. Using event topology we show that the rate for the direct production of J/ψ, via radiative decays of χ states, is larger than that for production via B-hadrons. Production of ψ′ is also studied using the decay modes

Abstract

The TPC/Two-Gamma Collaboration has measured the inclusive cross section for production of charmed D∗± mesons in photon-photon collisions. The reaction utilized was e+e-→e+e-D∗±X, with D∗±→DOπ+-, DO→K-+π ±, and either zero or one outgoing e± detected. The result, σ(e + e - → e + e - D ∗± X) = 74±26±19 pb , is in agreement with the quark parton mo del prediction for e+e- → e+e-c c , combined with a Lund model for the hadronization of the charmed quarks.

Abstract

A large muon detection system has been constructed and is fully operational in the PEP 4 facility. It is more than 99.6% efficient. The system is rugged and reliable. It is possible to verify the integrity of all the chambers in a few minutes. Associated software for identifying muons has been written and is working.

A svstem of two cylindrical drift chambers has been designed and constructed to trigger the Time Projection Chamber and to assist in tracking and momentum reconstruction. Performance of these chambers has been studied with data collected from cosmic rays and actual e+e-collisions during recent experimental runs.

Abstract

The spatial resolution and response of the segmented cathode pads of the PEP-4 TPC have been measured with data taken at 8.5 atmospheres of 80% Argon-20% Methane gas with a 4kG magnetic field. The dependence of the spatial resolution and pad response on drift distance and track-anode crossing angle is presented.

Abstract

Channeling phenomena are observed for positive particles of momentum up to 250 GeV/ c in a germanium crystal. The polar angular distributions of the channeled particles are compared with theoretical predictions based on a diffusion model. The results indicate that at high particle energy there may be additional mechanisms besides those operative at low energy leading to dechanneling of the particles. In spite of this, channeling effects are observed for particles incident at up to several times the critical angle, in contrast with the results from low energy channeling. Statistical equilibrium in the azimuthal angular distribution has also been observed at all measured beam momenta to about twice the calculated channeling critical angle. The breakdown of statistical equilibrium for the 2 cm crystal used occurs at an incident angle 2–3 times smaller than predicted theoretically.

Abstract

Channeling of protons and positive and negative pions has been observed in a single crystal of germanium at beam momenta of 35, 100 and 250 GeV/c. Both energy loss and scattering have been measured. The channeling effects agree with observations at lower energies suitably scaled to these high energies. The suppression of inelastic nuclear interactions has been directly observed by monitoring multiple-track events.

Abstract

We present here some results obtained with the LBL Time Projection Chamber (TPC) regarding the particle identification by the measurement of the ionization losses in the relativistic rise region. This includes the method of calibration using 55Fe sources, the measurement of the resolution using cosmic rays, which shows an equivalent K-? separation of 4.8 standard deviations at 3.5 GeV/c, and the preliminary results obtained with multihadronic events from e+e- annihilations.

Abstract

The charge asymmetry in the decay η′(958)→π+π−γ has been measured using η′ mesons produced in the reaction π−p→η′n at 2.1 GeV/c incident pion momentum. A value for the asymmetry of (−6.9±7.8%) was obtained, based on 295±31 events after background subtraction. This result is consistent with C invariance in this decay.

Abstract

The PEP-4 hexagonal barrel calorimeter, with lead-laminate layers and 5×lOmm2 Geiger-mode discharge cells, has demonstrated excellent stability and uniformity in operation. The use of projective geometry in half degree-wide cathode strips at ±60 degrees to the sense wire channels provides excellent spatial resolution and reconstruction capability. The electronic noise-to-signal ratio without preamplification is sufficiently low that individual 50 pC Geiger discharges are accurately measured and used for energy calibration. Measurements made at 14.5 GeV e± beam energy have provided preliminary spectra of Bhabhas and of photon-photon invariant mass. The latter show that ?o's can be reconstructed.

Abstract

The Time Projection Chamber has operated in the PEP colliding beams at SLAC since January 1982. Its signal processing system, containing 16020 channels, has been calibrated and monitored using a computer-controlled test pulser system. We describe the test system and review measurements made with the system of signal processing electronics.

Abstract

Final states produced by charged baryon exchange in π−p interactions at 12 GeV/c laboratory momentum have been studied. Forward neutrons with momenta determined by a calorimeter to be greater than 8.5 ± 1.4 GeV/c triggered the SLAC 40-inch hydrogen bubble chamber which operated at a 10 Hz expansion rate. We report data on the reactions π−p→nπ−π+, π−p→nπ−π+π0, and π−p→nπ−π−π+π+. In π−nπ−p→nπ+, production of ϱ and f mesons is observed. Differential cross sections are derived and compared with data at lower incident momentum and with theoretical models. In π−p→nπ−π+π0, ω production is observed with a differential cross section having a deep near u′= 0.2 (GeV/c)2. In π−p→nπ−π−π+π+, Δ−, ϱ and f production is observed . The observed mass distributions appear to indicate the production of wide resonaces decaying into ϱππ. Some evidence for ϱ-ω interference is also observed.

Abstract

Data are presented for the reactions K+p → Λpp and K+p → ΛK+K+ at 7.3 GeV/c. A satisfactory parameterization of these processes is obtained using the double-Regge phenomenology. The data are also compared with predictions of a spin-independent, generalized Veneziano model.

Abstract

The decay process KLo → πμν has been studied in a wire chamber experiment using the three-degree KLo beam at SLAC. A sample of 26 500 Kμ3 events have been identified to obtain information on the form factors ƒ ± associated with the V-A hypothesis for this decay. Expressing the energy dependence of the form factors as ƒ ± = ƒ ± (0) (1 + λ ± q 2 m 2 ), where q 2 = (p K −p μ ) 2 , the experiment yields the value λ+ = 0.08 ± 0.01 and reveals a strong coupling between λ_ and ζ_(0) = ƒ_(0) ƒ + (0) .

Abstract

We have studied the proper time distribution of coherent π+π− decays from a 3 – 10 GeV/c KLo beam incident on a one meter liquid hydrogen target using a wire spark chamber spectrometer in the 30 neutral beam at SLAC. We find ∣(ƒ(0) − ƒ (0))/k∣ = 0.43 ± 0.11 mb , φ(ƒ(0) − ƒ (0)) = -101 0 ± 42 0 .

Abstract

The decay fractions of the Y 0 ∗ (1520) have been measured using the reaction K − p → Y 0 ∗ (1520) π + π − at 2.0 GeV/ c incident momentum. They are K N : Σπ: Λππ = (52 ± 4):(37 ± 4):(11 ± 2) . The best values for the mass and width are 1518.0 ± 0.7 MeV and 16 ± 2 MeV.

Abstract

A one-pion-exchange pole-extrapolation analysis of K + p→K πΔ ++ at 7.3 GeV/ c provides evidence for the existence of a broad scalar T = 1 2 K π resonance near 1.1GeV. The angular distribution in the Kπ center-of-mass is consistent with this result.

Abstract

New data for the reaction K−p → ΛK+K− at 3.3 GeV/c have been used to investigate the five-particle generalized Veneziano model. The amplitude is constrained by symmetry properties of the crossed channels and by non-exchange degeneracy of the Nα∗ trajectory. The Harari-Rosner dual quark model determines the trajectories which couple to the K+K− system. Reasonable choices for the other trajectories lead to good agreement with these data as well as data at higher and lower beam momentum. The pomeron exchange contribution to the reaction is shown to be small; however, both pseudoscalar and vector kinematic factors are required for detailed agreement with the angular distributions. The model fails to account for the crossing-symmetric reaction K+p → ΛK+K+.

Abstract

A study of K+p elastic scattering at 7.3 GeV/c has yielded a cross section of 3.86 ± 0.38 mb. For events produced in the forward direction, a diffractive peak is observed which fits the distribution (dσ/dt) = (dσ/dt)0exp (αt + βt2) with (dσ/dt)0 = (20.6 + 2.6) mb/(GeV/c2, α = (5.46 ±_0.29)(GeV/c)-2 an β = (0.38 ± 0.25)(GeV/c)-4. The ratio |Re ƒ(0)/Im ƒ (0)| for the forward scattering amplitude is 0.60 ± 0.14. One elastic scatter was found in the backward direction.

Abstract

A sample of 17 000 K0L → πev decays were measured at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center using a wire chamber magnetic spectrometer. K0e3 decays were separated from other K0L decay modes by using kinematic tests, muon identification by penetration of a Pb wall and electron identification by a shower counter array. We find the data in fixed q2 bands are in reasonable agreement with the V-A theory and we present the unparametrized form factor ƒ + (q 2 ) . Using the usual linear parametrization ƒ + (q 2 ) ∼ 1 + λ + q 2 /m π 2 , we obtained λ+ = 0.05 ± 0.01.

Abstract

We have extracted the strong interaction form factors from K o e3 and K o μ3 data of our previously reported K o L experiment in a manner which does not assume an explicit q 2 = ( p K − p π ) 2 dependence. We present the unparameterized form factors ƒ + (q 2 ) from the K o L → πeν and K o L → πμν modes and ƒ o (q 2 ) and ξ ( q 2 ) from the K o L → πμν data. A comparison of these unparameterized results is made with the results of the Dalitz plot analyses.

Abstract

We have measured the rate for K L 0 → π + π − as a function of the thickness of lead absorber placed in a K L 0 beam at SLAC. Measurements were made with 12″, 18″ and 24″ of lead. Our results, which are relatively constant, are in strong disagreement with models which ascribe this decay mode to an additional neutral kaon state which is CP even, does not interact strongly, but otherwise has properties similar to the K 2 0 state.

Abstract

A large emulsion stack exposed to the positive K beam at the Berkeley 6 GeV Bevatron has been used to measure the mass of the K-particles and their abundances. The masses for the decay modes Kμ2, Kπ2 and τ were obtained by measurement of the mean range of the secondaries. In addition, masses for all modes compared to the proton mass were measured by the range-momentum method. The abundances were determined by following and blob-counting secondaries.
