Abstract: We have searched for the flavor-changing neutral current decay b -> s mu+ mu- in p pbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV with the DO detector at Fermilab. We determine the 90% confidence level limit for the branching fraction to be B(b -> X_s mu+ mu-) < 3.2 x 10^{-4}. We argue that this limit is more stringent than the best published limit on this decay rate.

Abstract: The global topologies of inclusive three- and four-jet events produced in $\overline{p}p$ interactions are described. The three- and four-jet events are selected from data recorded by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider operating at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=1800$ GeV. The measured, normalized distributions of various topological variables are compared with parton-level predictions of tree-level QCD calculations. The parton-level QCD calculations are found to be in good agreement with the data. The studies also show that the topological distributions of the different subprocesses involving different numbers of quarks are very similar and reproduce the measured distributions well. The parton-shower Monte Carlo generators provide a less satisfactory description of the topologies of the three- and four-jet events.

Abstract: We have studied J ψ production in p p collisions at s = 1.8 TeV with the DO detector at Fermilab using μ+μ− data. We have measured the inclusive J ψ production cross section as a function of J ψ transverse momentum, pT. For the kinematic range pT > 8 GeV/c and |η| σ(p p → J ψ + X) · Br ( J ψ → μ + μ − ) = 2.08 ± 0.17( stat) ± 0.46(syst) nb. Using the muon impact parameter we have estimated the fraction of J ψ mesons coming from B meson decays to be fb = 0.35 ± 0.09(stat)±0.10(syst) and inferred the inclusive b production cross section. From the information on the event topology the fraction of nonisolated J ψ events has been measured to be fnonisol = 0.64 ± 0.08(stat)±0.06(syst). We have also obtained the fraction of J ψ events resulting from radiative decays of χc states, fχ = 0.32 ± 0.07(stat)±0.07(syst). We discuss the implications of our measurements for charmonium production processes.

Abstract: The distribution of the transverse energy in jets has been measured in p p collisions at s =1.8 TeV TeV using the DO detector at Fermilab. This measurement of the jet shape is made as a function of jet transverse energy in both the central and forward rapidity regions. Jets are shown to narrow both with increasing transverse energy and with increasing rapidity. Next-to-leading order partonic QCD calculations are compared to the data. Although the calculations qualitatively describe the data, they are shown to be very dependent on renormalization scale, parton clustering algorithm, and jet direction definition and they fail to describe the data in all regions consistently.

Abstract: A search for a heavy charged gauge boson, W′, using the decay channels W′ → eν and W′ → τν → eνν ν is reported. The data used in the analysis were collected by the DO experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron during the 1992-93 p p collider run from an integrated luminosity of 13.9 ± 0.8 pb−1 at s =1.8 TeV . Assuming that the neutrino from W′ decay is stable and has a mass significantly less than mW′, an upper limit at the 95% confidence level is set on the cross section times branching ratio for p p → W′ → eν . A W′ with the same couplings to quarks and leptons as the standard model W boson is excluded for mW′

Abstract: We describe the results of beam tests of three uranium-liquid argon calorimeter modules constructed for the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. As part of the calibration procedure, these modules were exposed to beams of electrons, pions and muons between 10 and 150 GeV/c before their installation in the end calorimeter of the completed DO detector. We obtain an electromagnetic sampling resolution of 15.7%/√E and constant term of 0.3%. The hadronic sampling resolution is 45%/√E (degraded to 50%/√E by the effects of upstream material) and the constant term is 4%. The calorimeter is linear to 0.5%, and the electromagnetic to hadronic response ratio is between 1.02 and 1.09 over this range of momenta. For an electron efficiency of 95% we obtain a rejection factor against pions of ∼ 900-3000 for particles in the momentum range between 50 and 150 GeV/c. We also compare our results with the predictions of a detailed Monte Carlo simulation.

Abstract: We present results of an analysis of the reaction γγ → ωϱ in the two-photon process e + e − → ϵ + e − 2 π + 2 π − π 0 in the untagged mode. The cross section is largely compatible with previous determinations; however, we do not confirm the enhancement claimed at 1.9 GeV. All observed ω's are accompanied by ϱ's in the recoiling ππ spectrum. An angular correlation analysis shows that the data is not dominated by a single spin-parity state, thus establishing severe constraints on qq q q models which predict J P = 2 + .

Abstract: The intermittency structure of multihadronic e + e − annihilation is analyzed by evaluating the factorial moments F 2 − F 5 in three-dimensional Lorentz invariant phase space as a function of the resolution scale. We interpret our data in the language of fractal objects. It turns out that the fractal dimension depends on the resolution scale in a way that can be attributed to geometrical resolution effects and dynamical effects, such as the π 0 Dalitz decay. The LUND 7.2 hadronization model provides an excellent description of the data. There is no indication of unexplained multiplicity fluctuations in small phase space regions.

Abstract: We have studied the properties of pion production in the reaction γ→3π+3π− in the energy range 1.6⩽Wγγ⩽7.5 GeV with the CELLO detector at PETRA. We present the topological cross section both for Q2≈0 (anti-tag) and Q2≈0 (single-tag). The Q2 dependence of the cross section is flatter than the GVDM prediction. The distribution of the production angle of the pions in the CMS peaks at small angles, indicating a peripheral process. In accordance with the VDM picture the pT distribution of the pions manifests an exponential fall-off. Like sign pion pairs were found to be Bose-Einstein correlated. We use this correlation to estimate the spatial dimensions of the interaction region.

Abstract: A measurement of the mass of the W boson is presented which is based on a sample of 5982 W → eνv decays observed in pp collisions at √s=1.8 TeV with the D∅ detector during the 1992-1993 run. From a fit to the transverse mass spectrum, combined with measurements of the Z boson mass, the W boson mass is measured to be MW=80.350±0.140(stat)±0.165(syst)±0.160(scale) GeV/c 2 . Detailed discussions of the determination of the absolute energy scale, the measured efficiencies, and all systematic uncertainties are presented.

Abstract: The gauge boson pair production processes Wg, WW, WZ, and Zg were studied using pbarp collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of ~14 pb-1 at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV. Analysis of Wg prod with subsequent W boson decay to lv (l=e,mu) is reported, including a fit to the pT spectrum of the photons which leads to limits on anomalous WWg couplings. A search for WW prod with subsequent decay to l-lbar-v-vbar (l=e,mu) is presented leading to an upper limit on the WW prod cross section and limits on anomalous WWg and WWZ couplings. A search for high pT W bosons in WW and WZ prod is described, where one W boson decays to an ev and the second W boson or the Z boson decays to two jets. A maximum likelihood fit to the pT spectrum of W bosons resulted in limits on anomalous WWg and WWZ couplings. A combined fit to the three data sets which provided the tightest limits on anomalous WWg and WWZ couplings is also described. Limits on anomalous ZZg and Zgg couplings are presented from an analysis of the photon ET spectrum in Zg events in the decay channels (ee, mu-mu, and v-vbar) of the Z boson., 77 Pages including 40 Figures. Abstract: The DØ detector is a large general purpose detector for the study of short-distance phenomena in high energy antiproton-proton collisions, now in operation at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The detector focusses upon the detection of electrons, muons, jets and missing transverse momentum. We describe the design and performance of the major elements of the detector, including the tracking chambers, transition radiation detector, liquid argon calorimetry and muon detection. The associated electronics, triggering systems and data acquisition systems are presented. The global mechanical, high voltage, and experiment monitoring and control systems which support the detector are described. We also discuss the design and implementation of software and software support systems that are specific to DØ. © 1994.

Abstract: The reactions e + e − →γγγ and e + e − →γγγγ have been studied at center-of-mass energies between 35 and 46.8 GeV with an integrated luninosity of about 130 pb −1 accumulated with the CELLO detector at PETRA. The measurements are compared to QED calculations up to third and fourth orders of perturbation theory. Excellent agreement is observed.

Abstract: A search for multihadronic events produced with two energetic leptons has been performed at PETRA using 130 pb−1 accumulated by the CELLO detector at 35 GeV ⩽ √s ⩽46.8 GeV. Three μ+μ−, eleven e+e− and three eμ events were observed. The mesured yields an dthe event characteristics are in good agreement with the expectation for the α4 QED processes e + e − → l + l − q q and from semileptonic decays of pairs of heavy quarks.

Abstract: The semi-hadronic decay of the τ→ηπν has been studied in the reaction e + e − →τ + τ − at center-of-mass energies between 14.0 and 46.8 GeV with the CELLO detector at PETRA. No evidence for the decay has been found with an upper limit of 1.4% at 90% CL for the branching ratio τ→ηπν. This is in contradiction to a recent measurement of this final state at the 5% level. In the standard model this decay is strongly suppressed.

Abstract: Using the t -expansion to order t 7 the mass of the axial glueball in lattice QCD is investigated. The Pade approximants display a minimum around 2 GeV but have no extended scaling region. This result is consistent with the lack of scaling observed in Monte Carlo calculations in this channel. It also explains why hamiltonian strong-coupling calculations lead to non-trivial results. If scalling should set in at higher orders of the t -expansion, the minimum at 2 GeV could be indicative of the resulting mass-scale.

Abstract: The reaction e + e − → τ + τ − has been studied at centre of mass energies between 14.0 and 46.8 GeV with the CELLO detector at the PETRA e + e − collider. We present results for the cross section σ τ and the charge asymmetry A τ . The results are in good agreement with the standard model. We have also measured the topological decay rates BR 1 , BR 3 and BR 5 for the inclusive decay of the τ lepton into one, three and five charge particles. The results confirm and improve earlier CELLO measurements at other energies. We find for the combined values at all energies BR 1 = (84.9 ± 0.4 ± 0.3)%, BR 3 = (15.0 ± 0.4 ± 0.3)% and BR 5 = (0.16 ± 0.13 ± 0.04)%.

Abstract: This report describes the first search for top squark pair production in the channel stop_1 stopbar_1 -> b bbar chargino_1 chargino_1 -> ee+jets+MEt using 74.9 +- 8.9 pb^-1 of data collected using the D0 detector. A 95% confidence level upper limit on sigma*B is presented. The limit is above the theoretical expectation for sigma*B for this process, but does show the sensitivity of the current D0 data set to a particular topology for new physics., Five pages, including three figures, submitted to PRD Brief Reports

Abstract: We report on a study of color coherence effects in pp- collisions at a center of mass energy √s = 1.8 TeV. The data were collected with the DØ detector during the 1992-1993 run of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We observe the presence of initial-to-final state color interference with the spatial correlations between soft and hard jets in multijet events in the central and in forward pseudorapidity regions. The results are compared to Monte Carlo simulations with different color coherence implementations and to the predictions of script O sign(α3s) QCD calculations. © 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract: We determine the top quark mass m{sub t} using t{bar t} pairs produced in the DO/ detector by {radical} (s) =1.8thinspTeV p{bar p} collisions in a 125thinsppb{sup {minus}1} exposure at the Fermilab Tevatron. We make a two constraint fit to m{sub t} in t{bar t}{r_arrow}bW{sup +}{bar b}W{sup {minus}} final states with one {ital W} boson decaying to q{bar q} and the other to e{nu} or {mu}{nu}. Likelihood fits to the data yield m{sub t}(l+jets)=173.3{plus_minus}5.6thinsp(stat)thinsp{plus_minus}thinsp5.5thinsp(s st) GeV/c{sup 2}. When this result is combined with an analysis of events in which both {ital W} bosons decay into leptons, we obtain m{sub t}=172.1{plus_minus}5.2thinsp(stat)thinsp{plus_minus}thinsp4.9thinsp(syst) GeV/c{sup 2}. An alternate analysis, using three constraint fits to fixed top quark masses, gives m{sub t}(l+jets)=176.0{plus_minus}7.9thinsp(stat){plus_minus}thinsp4.8thinsp(syst) GeV/c{sup 2}, consistent with the above result. Abstract: We have searched for a heavy neutral gauge boson, Z ′, using the decay channel Z ′ → ee . The data were collected with the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron during the 1992–1993 p p collider run at s =1.8 TeV from an integrated luminosity of 15±1 pb −1 . Limits are set on the cross section times brancing ratio for the process p p → Z′ → ee as a function of the Z ′ mass. We exclude the existence of a Z ′ of mass less than 490 GeV/c 2 , assuming a Z ′ with the same coupling strengths to quarks and leptons as the standard model Z boson.
