Abstract: AGATA Collaboration, New physics opportunities are opening up by the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array, AGATA, as it evolves to the full 4π instrument. AGATA is a high-resolution γ-ray spectrometer, solely built from highly segmented high-purity Ge detectors, capable of measuring γ rays from a few tens of keV to beyond 10 MeV, with unprecedented efficiency, excellent position resolution for individual γ-ray interactions, and very high count-rate capability. Abstract: The structure of 71Zn was investigated by one-neutron transfer and heavy-ion induced complex (deep-inelastic) reactions using the GRETINA-CHICO2 and the Gammasphere setups, respectively. The observed inversion between the 9/2+ and 1/2− states is explained in terms of the role of neutron pairing correlations. Non-collective sequences of levels were delineated above the 9/2+ isomeric state. These are interpreted as being associated with a modest oblate deformation in the framework of Monte-Carlo shell-model calculations carried out with the A3DA-m Hamiltonian in the p f g 9 / 2 d 5 / 2 valence space. Similarities with the structure of Ni 40 28 68 were observed and the shape-coexistence mechanism in the N = 40 region of neutron-rich nuclei is discussed in terms of the so-called Type-II shell evolution, with an emphasis on proton–neutron correlations between valence nucleons, especially those involving the shape-driving g 9 / 2 neutron orbital.

Abstract: The MUGAST-AGATA-VAMOS set-up at GANIL combines the MUGAST highly-segmented silicon array with the state-of-the-art AGATA array and the large acceptance VAMOS spectrometer. The mechanical and electronics integration copes with the constraints of maximum efficiency for each device, in particular {\gamma}-ray transparency for the silicon array. This complete set-up offers a unique opportunity to perform exclusive measurements of direct reactions with the radioactive beams from the SPIRAL1 facility. The performance of the set-up is described through its commissioning and two examples of transfer reactions measured during the campaign. High accuracy spectroscopy of the nuclei of interest, including cross-sections and angular distributions, is achieved through the triple-coincidence measurement. In addition, the correction from Doppler effect of the {\gamma}-ray energies is improved by the detection of the light particles and the use of two-body kinematics and a full rejection of the background contributions is obtained through the identification of heavy residues. Moreover, the system can handle high intensity beams (up to 108 pps). The particle identification based on the measurement of the time-of-flight between MUGAST and VAMOS and the reconstruction of the trajectories is investigated., Comment: 13 pages, 18 figures

Abstract: International audience; The AGATA (Advanced GAmma Tracking Array) tracking detector is being designed to far surpass the performance of the previous generation, Compton-suppressed arrays. In this paper, a characterization of AGATA is provided based on data from the second GSI campaign. Emphasis is placed on the proper corrections required to extract the absolute photopeak efficiency and peak-to-total ratio. The performance after tracking is extracted and GEANT4 simulations are used both to understand the results and to scale the measurements up to predicted values for the full 4π implementation of the device.

Abstract: A lifetime measurement of the 19/2 state in Pb has been performed using the Recoil Distance Doppler-Shift (RDDS) method. The nuclei of interest were produced in multi-nucleon transfer reactions induced by a Pb beam impinging on a Mo enriched target. The beam-like nuclei were detected and identified in terms of their atomic mass number in the VAMOS++ spectrometer while the prompt γ rays were detected by the AGATA tracking array. The measured large reduced transition probability B(E3,19/2→13/2)=40(8) W.u. is the first indication of the octupole phonon at high spin in Pb. An analysis in terms of a particle-octupole-vibration coupling model indicates that the measured B(E3) value in Pb is compatible with the contributions from single-phonon and single particle E3 as well as E3 strength arising from the double-octupole-phonon 6 state, all adding coherently. A crucial aspect of the coupling model, namely the strong mixing between single-hole and the phonon-hole states, is confirmed in a realistic shell-model calculation.

Abstract: International audience; The AGATA and GRETINA/GRETA tracking spectrometers allow for the highest sensitivity $ \gamma$ -ray spectroscopy achievable today. Central to these instruments is the task of tracking $ \gamma$ rays, the process by which the interaction points observed in a tracking array are assembled into actual $ \gamma$ rays. Furthermore, the process evaluates the confidence with which individual photons are assembled, i.e., whether the track reconstruction results in a full-energy $ \gamma$ ray or rather in an event associated with Compton scattering, absorption in dead layers or other effects requiring rejection in order to produce spectra with a good peak-to-total ratio. The physics capabilities provided by these spectrometers as well as the different methods of tracking that have been developed are reviewed. The methods used to determine the interaction points from the charge collection signals obtained from the central contact and the segments of HPGe detectors, are presented as well. The performances of the existing tracking arrays, together with possible improvements, are summarized and discussed.

Abstract: 20 pags., 12 figs., 14 tabs., A Coulomb-excitation experiment to study electromagnetic properties of Ca42 was performed using a 170-MeV calcium beam from the TANDEM XPU facility at INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. γ rays from excited states in Ca42 were measured with the AGATA spectrometer. The magnitudes and relative signs of ten E2 matrix elements coupling six low-lying states in Ca42, including the diagonal E2 matrix elements of 21+ and 22+ states, were determined using the least-squares code gosia. The obtained set of reduced E2 matrix elements was analyzed using the quadrupole sum rule method and yielded overall quadrupole deformation for 01,2+ and 21,2+ states, as well as triaxiality for 01,2+ states, establishing the coexistence of a weakly deformed ground-state band and highly deformed slightly triaxial sideband in Ca42. The experimental results were compared with the state-of-the-art large-scale shell-model and beyond-mean-field calculations, which reproduce well the general picture of shape coexistence in Ca42., K.H.-K. acknowledges support from the Research Council of Norway under Grant No. 213442. Abstract: The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) has been installed at the GANIL facility, Caen-France. This setup exploits the stable and radioactive heavy-ions beams delivered by the cyclotron accelerator complex of GANIL. Additionally, it benefits from a large palette of ancillary detectors and spectrometers to address in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy of exotic nuclei. The set-up has been designed to couple AGATA with a magnetic spectrometer, charged-particle and neutron detectors, scintillators for the detection of high-energy γ rays and other devices such as a plunger to measure nuclear lifetimes. In this paper, the design and the mechanical characteristics of the set-up are described. Based on simulations, expected performances of the AGATA l π array are presented. Abstract: WOS: 000300864200005, The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) is a European project to develop and operate the next generation gamma-ray spectrometer. AGATA is based on the technique of gamma-ray energy tracking in electrically segmented high-purity germanium crystals. This technique requires the accurate determination of the energy, time and position of every interaction as a gamma ray deposits its energy within the detector volume. Reconstruction of the full interaction path results in a detector with very high efficiency and excellent spectral response. The realisation of gamma-ray tracking and AGATA is a result of many technical advances. These include the development of encapsulated highly segmented germanium detectors assembled in a triple cluster detector cryostat, an electronics system with fast digital sampling and a data acquisition system to process the data at a high rate. The full characterisation of the crystals was measured and compared with detector-response simulations. This enabled pulse-shape analysis algorithms, to extract energy, time and position, to be employed. In addition, tracking algorithms for event reconstruction were developed. The first phase of AGATA is now complete and operational in its first physics campaign. In the future AGATA will be moved between laboratories in Europe and operated in a series of campaigns to take advantage of the different beams and facilities available to maximise its science output. Abstract: © 2016 American Physical Society. The distribution of single-particle strength in Ni67,69 was characterized with one-neutron knockout reactions from intermediate-energy Ni68,70 secondary beams, selectively populating neutron-hole configurations at N=39 and 41, respectively. The spectroscopic strengths deduced from the measured partial cross sections to the individual final states, as tagged by their γ-ray decays, are used to identify and quantify neutron configurations in the wave functions. While Ni69 compares well with shell-model predictions, the results for Ni67 challenge the validity of current effective shell-model Hamiltonians by revealing discrepancies that cannot be explained so far. These results suggest that our understanding of the low-lying states in the neutron-rich, semimagic Ni isotopes may be incomplete and requires further investigation on both the experimental and theoretical sides.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we provide a formalism for the characterization of tracking arrays with emphasis on the proper corrections required to extract their photopeak efficiencies and peak-to-total ratios. The methods are first applied to Gammasphere, a well characterized 4π array based on the principle of Compton suppression, and subsequently to GRETINA. The tracking efficiencies are then discussed and some guidelines as to what clustering angle to use in the tracking algorithm are presented. It was possible, using GEANT4 simulations, to scale the measured efficiencies up to the expected values for the full 4π implementation of GRETA.

Abstract: The quadrupole collectivity of low-lying states and the anomalous behavior of the $0^+_2$ and $2^+_3$ levels in $^{72}$Ge are investigated via projectile multi-step Coulomb excitation with GRETINA and CHICO-2. A total of forty six $E2$ and $M1$ matrix elements connecting fourteen low-lying levels were determined using the least-squares search code, gosia. Evidence for triaxiality and shape coexistence, based on the model-independent shape invariants deduced from the Kumar-Cline sum rule, is presented. These are interpreted using a simple two-state mixing model as well as multistate mixing calculations carried out within the framework of the triaxial rotor model. The results represent a significant milestone towards the understanding of the unusual structure of this nucleus., Comment: 7 pages and 7 figures

Abstract: International audience; In contemporary nuclear physics, the European Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) represents a crucial detection system for cutting-edge nuclear structure studies. AGATA consists of highly segmented high-purity germanium crystals and uses the pulse-shape analysis technique to determine both the position and the energy of the γ-ray interaction points in the crystals. It is the tracking algorithms that deploy this information and enable insight into the sequence of interactions, providing information on the full or partial absorption of the γ ray. A series of dedicated performance measurements for an AGATA set-up comprising 21 crystals is described. This set-up was used within the recent PreSPEC–AGATA experimental campaign at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung. Using the radioactive sources 56Co, 60Co and 152Eu, absolute and normalized efficiencies and the peak-to-total of the array were measured. These quantities are discussed using different data analysis procedures. The quality of the pulse-shape analysis and the tracking algorithm are evaluated. The agreement between the experimental data and the Geant4 simulations is also investigated.

Abstract: 6 pages; International audience; Isomeric states in 253No have been investigated by conversion-electron and gamma-ray spectroscopy with the GABRIELA detection system. The 31 micro second isomer reported more than 30 years ago is found to decay to the ground state of 253No by the emission of a 167 keV M2 transition. The spin and parity of this low-lying isomeric state are established to be 5/2+. The presence of another longer-lived isomeric state is also discussed.

Abstract: The structure of semi-magic Ni-70(28)42 was investigated following complementary multinucleon-transfer and secondary fragmentation reactions. Changes to the higher-spin, presumed negative-parity states based on observed gamma-ray coincidence relationships result in better agreement with shell-model calculations using effective interactions in the neutron f(5/2)pg(9/2) model space. The second 2(+) and (4(+)) states, however, can only be successfully described when proton excitations across the Z = 28 shell gap are included. Monte Carlo shell-model calculations suggest that the latter two states are part of a prolate-deformed intruder sequence, establishing an instance of shape coexistence at low excitation energies similar to that observed recently in neighboring Ni-68.

Abstract: The high-spin states in Nd-141 were investigated using the Zr-96(Ca-48, 3n) reaction and the EU-ROBALL array. The level scheme has been extended up to an excitation energy of around 16MeV and spin 81/2. Two new bands of dipole transitions and three bands presumably of quadrupole transitions were identified and their connections to low-lying states were established. Cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky and tilted axis cranking calculations are combined in the interpretation of the observed dipole bands. The high-spin bands with assigned quadrupole transitions are interpreted as triaxial bands, while the dipole bands appear in the calculations to exhibit a shape evolution from low-deformation triaxial to spherical shape. They can be classified as magnetic rotation, with transition probabilities that show the characteristic decrease with angular momentum caused by the shears mechanism.

Abstract: The PreSPEC setup for high-resolution 'gamma-ray spectroscopy using radioactive ion beams was employed for experimental campaigns in 2012 and 2014. The setup consisted of the state of the art Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) and the High Energy gamma cleteCTOR (HECTOR+) positioned around a secondary target at the final focal plane of the GSI FRagment Separator (FRS) to perform in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy of exotic nuclei. The Lund York Cologne CAlorimeter (LYCCA) was used to identify the reaction products. In this paper we report on the trigger scheme used during the campaigns. The dataflow coupling between the Multi-Branch System (MBS) based Data AcQuisition (DAQ) used for FRS-LYCCA and the "Nouvelle Acquisition temps Reel Version 1.2 Avec Linux" (NARVAL) based acquisition system used for AGATA are also described. Abstract: Submitted to European Physical Journal A - Expérience GANIL; The odd-Z isotope 255Lr, its daughter 251Md and grand-daughter 247Es were studied in two experiments performed at GANIL and the University of Jyväskylä. The 255Lr nuclei were produced using the cold fusion-evaporation reaction 209Bi(48Ca, 2n)255Lr at a bombarding energy of 217MeV. The single-particle structure and decay properties were investigated using α, γ and electron spectroscopy. The ground-state spin and parity could be assigned for 255Lr (1/2-) and 251Md (7/2-). States corresponding to the 7/2+[633], 7/2-[514] and 1/2-[521] Nilsson orbitals were observed. Results are compared to experimental data obtained in neighbouring isotopes and to Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations using the Skyrme interaction SLy4 and a density-dependent pairing interaction. The position of the 1/2-[521] orbital from the spherical 2f5/2 shell is discussed.

Abstract: Matière Nucléaire; International audience; The gamma decay of the nuclei 124,125Ba has been investigated with the EUROBALL array, using the reaction 64Ni+64 Ni at E_{beam} = 255 and 261 MeV. Six new E1 transitions have been found in the nucleus 125Ba, suggesting a significant role of octupole correlations in the origin of its parity doublets. The pi = 3-level of the nucleus 124Ba has been identified for the first time. Its excitation energy is in very good agreement with a prediction based on a microscopic model including octupole interactions.

Abstract: In the context of the development of a new multi-detector for γ-ray spectroscopy such as AGATA, we discuss the performances of 2 different γ-ray tracking algorithms: back-tracking and forward-tracking. The same Monte Carlo simulated data is used to compare the capacity of each algorithm to reconstruct the trajectories of a given number of photons emitted into a 4π germanium shell.

Abstract: We report on four recent results concerning the population and the decay of superdeformed states, namely the structure of excited superdeformed states in 194Hg, the search for fine structure of the last superdeformed transitions in 194Pb, the primary decay-out strength analysis in 194Hg and, as a consequence of this, the possibility of using the decay-out as a tool to study order-to-chaos properties of normally deformed states.

Abstract: Following mass measurements in the region N = 20 and N = 28, we have studied inelastic nuclear scattering for the nuclei 34Si, 33Al and 32Mg. No evidence for a low-lying shape isomeric 0+ state was found in 34Si, and an upper limit for the population cross-section could be established, rendering its existence very unlikely. A new transition was found in 33Al, that is a good candidate for a 2p–2h state and therefore a determination of the 2p–2h gap at N = 20. Inelastic nuclear scattering strongly excites 3− states, as seen in 34Si. A strong transition was found in 32Mg that should correspond to the first 3− in this nucleus, lying very low as compared to theory and systematics in this region.

Abstract: High-spin states of 194 Pb have been populated by the reaction 184 W( 16 O, 6n) at 113 MeV beam energy and studied using the EUROGAM-1 array. The level scheme has been extended up to spin of 33 ℏ and excitation energy of 11.1 MeV. The high-spin part of the level scheme is dominated by bands of dipole transitions. New dipole bands have been observed and the configurations of their band heads are discussed. Besides the well-known coupling of the K π =11 − two-proton state to several νi 13/2 rotation-aligned neutron states, the K π =8 + two-proton state is also involved. Such a coupling is identified for the first time in a lead isotope. Moreover, the K π =11 − two-proton state is coupled to the rotation-aligned proton pair ( πh 11/2 ) 2 . Thus many multiparticle configurations involving all the high- j subshells located around the proton and neutron Fermi levels, πh 11/2 , πh 9/2 , πi 13/2 , and νi 13/2 have been identified in this nucleus.

Abstract: International audience; The level scheme of the nucleus Te-120, populated in the reaction Se-80(Ca-48, alpha 4n), was reinvestigated using gamma-ray coincidence data measured with the Gammasphere spectrometer. Previously, five high-spin rotational bands were discovered in this nucleus. The present reinvestigation revealed that the decay of band b1 is more complex than suggested in the earlier work and that it cannot be uniquely determined. Furthermore, a number of new transitions are added to the level scheme. The implications for the spin assignments and excitation energies of the five bands and for comparisons with cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations are discussed.

Abstract: The shape transition in the neutron-rich Os isotopes is studied by investigating the neutron-rich 196Os nucleus through in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy using a two-proton transfer reaction from a 198Pt target to a 82Se beam. The beam-like recoils were detected and identified with the large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, and the coincident γ rays were measured with the advanced gamma tracking array (AGATA) demonstrator. The de-excitation of the low-lying levels of the yrast-band of 196Os were identified for the first time. The results are compared with state-of-the-art beyond-mean-field calculations, performed for the even-even 188-198Os isotopes. The new results suggest a smooth transition in the Os isotopes from a more axial rotational behavior towards predominately vibrational nuclei through triaxial configurations. An almost perfect γ-unstable/triaxial rotor yrast band is predicted for 196Os which is in agreement with the experimentally measured excited states

Abstract: New positive-parity states, having a bandlike structure, were observed in $^{105}\mathrm{Ru}$. The nucleus was produced in an induced fission reaction, and the prompt $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-rays, emitted from the fragments, were detected by the EUROBALL III multidetector array. The partial scheme of excited $^{105}\mathrm{Ru}$ levels is analyzed within the triaxial-rotor-plus-particle approach.

Abstract: An experiment aimed at studying high-spin states in 190 Hg was performed with the Eurogam II array. The data have revealed the presence of cascades of magnetic dipole transitions with some unexpected properties. Unlike the M1 bands previously observed in the heavier Hg isotopes, these structures have extremely large B(M1)/B(E2) ratios. The observation of a third dipole band with much lower B(M1)/B(E2) values in the same spin/excitation energy regime suggests that the bands may represent configurations occurring in different minima in the potential energy surface. Configuration-dependent Cranked Nilsson–Strutinsky calculations predict the presence of a minimum in the nuclear potential energy surface at a deformation of e≈0.2, γ≈−90°, occurring when a proton is excited across the Z=82 shell-gap into an h9/2 orbital. It is suggested that the bands exhibiting anomalously large B(M1)/B(E2) ratios may be associated with this minimum.

30. Superdeformation in Pb: Observation of three additional excited bands

Abstract: The superdeformed nucleus 193 Pb has been studied following a heavy-ion fusion-evaporation reaction with the Gammasphere spectrometer array. Three new superdeformed bands, two of them probably signature partners, have been observed, bringing the total number of superdeformed bands known in this nucleus to nine. An estimate of the g -factor associated with one of the previously known pairs of strongly coupled excited bands has been made, confirming their configuration. The properties of the bands are compared with the results of cranked shell model calculations; good agreement is found and configurations are assigned to each band. The two new signature partner bands are suggested to be based on the two signatures of the [512]5/2 neutron orbital. The third new band is probably based on the 7 3 intruder orbital. In addition, the high-energy region of the spectrum in coincidence with the yrast superdeformed bands has been carefully studied. The current data provide no evidence for the previously reported transitions linking the superdeformed and normal-deformed states with energies around 2.2 – 2.4 MeV.

Abstract: The strength distribution of the primary γ rays in the decay from superdeformed (SD) states is investigated by applying the maximum likelihood method. For the 194 Hg nucleus, 41 primary transitions are identified above 2600 keV. It is concluded that they represent the strongest 10% of the transitions selected stochastically from a Porter-Thomas distribution. This would support the scenario of a statistical decay of SD states via coupling to a compound state at normal deformation. However, the occurrence of several very strong “one-step linking” transitions is found to have a very small probability. Based on the absence of strong primary transitions from SD states in adjacent nuclei, the situation in 194 Hg is viewed as a very lucky incidence.

Abstract: The strength distribution of the γ rays in the decay-out from superdeformed (SD) states is investigated by applying the maximum likelihood method, with special emphasis on the influence of the lower threshold given by experimental conditions. Clear graphical solutions are found, and a careful estimation of the dispersion in the values of the number of degrees of freedom and of the average strength of the most likely χ 2 distribution is carried out. For the 194 Hg nucleus, 41 primary transitions from the decay-out of SD states are identified above 2600 keV. It is concluded that they represent the strongest 10% of the transitions selected stochastically from a Porter-Thomas distribution. This would support the scenario of a statistical decay of SD states via coupling to a compound state at normal deformation. However, the occurrence of several very strong direct one-step transitions as previously observed in 194 Hg has a very small probability of the order of 10 −4 . Abstract: Quadrupole moments of the six known superdeformed (SD) bands of {sup 193}Hg and the yrast SD band of {sup 192}Hg have been determined by a Doppler-shift-attenuation-method measurement utilizing the gammasphere array. The quadrupole moments of all {sup 193}Hg SD bands were found to be similar, suggesting the active single-particle orbitals in the mass-190 region exhibit only small shape-driving effects. Abstract: The g factors of three high spin isomers in 187,189,191Au have been measured, using the time differential perturbed angular distributions. The reactions used and the results obtained for the g factors and the lifetimes are: 172Yb(19F, 4nγ) 187Au, g (31/2- or 35/2-) = 0.25 (3), T1/2 = 102 (5) ns; 181Ta ( 12C, 4nγ) 189Au, g (31/2+) = 0.42 (2), T1/2 = 242 (10) ns; and 176Yb(19F, 4nγ) 191Au, g (31/2+) = 0.42 (3) T1/2 = 402 (20) ns. These results show that the structure of these isomers is consistent with a 1 proton, 2 neutrons structure. The experimental set-up was cheked by measuring the g factor of the Coulomb excited 197 keV, T1/2 = 89.3 ns level of the 19F beam stopped in the lead backing.

Abstract: One-step decay transitions linking the superdeformed (SD) bands 1 and 3 in194Hg to yrast levels are discussed. Inter-band transitions between bands 1 and 3 have also been identified. For the first time, the spin, parity and excitation energy have been determined for two SD bands in the same nucleus. The low excitation energy of the excited band supports the view that it is based on an octupole excitation. It is believed that Porter-Thomas fluctuations play a major role in determining the strength of the one-step transitions as suggested by the fact that only one other SD band has been linked in theA=190 mass region (194Pb) at the present time. When Porter-Thomas fluctuations prevent the observation of one-step or two-step linking transitions, as e.g. in the case of192Hg, the analysis of the quasi-continuous part of the decay-out spectrum provides an alternative method for the determination of the excitation energy and spin of an SD band. This method is discussed in detail.

Abstract: Three superdeformed bands have been observed in ${}^{191}$Au using the EUROGAM II multidetector array. The previously known yrast superdeformed band has been extended up to very high rotational frequencies and two new excited bands have been assigned to this nucleus. These bands behave as signature partners and display characteristics which suggest they could be based either on the $\ensuremath{\pi}$ [532]3/2 orbital alone or on that orbital plus the $\ensuremath{\pi}$ [530]1/2 orbital, which become the $[\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{431}]$3/2,1/2 doublet in the pseudospin formalism.

Abstract: High-precision lifetime measurements have been performed in superdeformed (SD) bands of {sup 192,194}Hg with the Doppler-shift attenuation method. Intrinsic quadrupole moments Q{sub 0} were extracted for three SD bands in {sup 194}Hg and for the yrast SD band in {sup 192}Hg. Within experimental uncertainties, all four SD bands have equal Q{sub 0} values. Abstract: Excited states in {sup 182}Pt have been studied via the heavy-ion reactions {sup 170}Yb({sup 16}O,4n), {sup 162}Dy({sup 24}Mg,4n), and {sup 163}Dy({sup 24}Mg,5n). {gamma}-ray coincidence measurements were performed with arrays of HPGe detectors at the McMaster University Tandem Accelerator Laboratory ({sup 16}O-induced reaction) and the Institut de Physique Nucl{acute e}aire, Orsay ({sup 24}Mg-induced reactions). The ground-state rotational band has been extended to I=26{h_bar}, and six new band structures have been identified and assigned quasiparticle configurations. The {gamma}-vibrational band and the band built upon the first excited 0{sup +} state have also been extended. Properties of the rotational bands are compared with cranked-shell-model and total-Routhian-surface calculations. Abstract: The population of the high-spin isomers in ${}^{139}$Nd and ${}^{140}$Nd was investigated using the ${}^{96}$Zr(${}^{48}$Ca,$xn$) reaction and the JUROGAM + RITU + GREAT setup employing the recoil decay tagging technique. Three transitions feeding the 23/2${}^{+}$ isomer in ${}^{139}$Nd and two transitions feeding the 20${}^{+}$ isomer in ${}^{140}$Nd were identified. The newly observed transitions allowed the excitation energy of the isomer to be established in ${}^{139}$Nd and to assign configurations to the states and bands deexcited by the observed transitions in both nuclei.

Abstract: Knowledge of the exact microscopic structure of the 0${}_{1}$${}^{+}$ ground state and first excited 0${}_{2}$${}^{+}$ state in ${}^{150}$Sm is required to understand the branching of double \ensuremath{\beta} decay to these states from ${}^{150}$Nd. The detailed spectroscopy of ${}^{150}$Sm and ${}^{152}$Gd has been studied using (\ensuremath{\alpha},xn) reactions and the \ensuremath{\gamma}-ray arrays AFRODITE and JUROGAM II. Consistently strong $E$1 transitions are observed between the excited ${K}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}$ $=$ 0${}_{2}$${}^{+}$ bands and the lowest negative parity bands in both nuclei. These results are discussed in terms of the possible permanent octupole deformation in the first excited ${K}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}$ $=$ 0${}_{2}$${}^{+}$ band and also in terms of the ``tidal wave'' model of Frauendorf.

Abstract: The population of the high-spin states in Nd-140 was investigated using the reaction Zr-96(Ca-48,4n). The results from two experiments, one with the EUROBALL array and one with the JUROGAM II + RITU + GREAT setup employing the recoil decay tagging technique, have been combined to develop a very detailed level scheme for Nd-140. Twelve bands of quadrupole transitions and eleven bands of dipole transitions were identified and their connections to low-lying states were established. Calculations using the cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky and the tilted axis cranking models were used to interpret the observed structures. The overall good agreement between the experimental results and the calculations assuming a triaxial shape of the nucleus strongly support the existence of a stable triaxial shape at high spins in this mass region. Abstract: The low-spin level scheme of ${}^{68}$Ni was investigated following two-neutron-knockout and multinucleon-transfer reactions. The energy of the first excited state was determined to be ${E}_{x}({0}_{2}^{+})=1603.5(3)$ keV. Relative $B(E2)$ transition probabilities were deduced and compared with shell-model calculations using several modern effective interactions. Theory reproduces the data well, but indicates substantial mixing of multi-particle, multi-hole configurations for the lowest observed ${0}^{+}$ and ${2}^{+}$ states.

Abstract: The nucleus195Pb has been populated with the184W+16O reaction at 113 MeV. Two dipole γ-ray cascades have been observed using the EUROGAM spectrometer. A comprehensive level scheme related to these structures has been established. Multiparticle configurations are attributed to these high-spin structures from detailed comparison with the neighbouring nuclei,193Hg,194Pb and195Tl. Band crossings due to i13/2 neutron pair breaking are observed in195Pb at about the same frequencies as in the isotone193Hg.

Abstract: Superdeformed (SD) states of {sup 190}Hg have been studied with the Eurogam Phase 2 {gamma}-ray spectrometer using the {sup 160}Gd({sup 34}S,4{ital n}) reaction. Two new excited SD bands have been found and identified as belonging to this nucleus, bringing the total number of SD bands in {sup 190}Hg to 4. One of the new bands has a dynamic moment of inertia that is very similar to that of the yrast SD band of {sup 190}Hg and most other SD bands in the {ital A}{approximately}190 region. In contrast, the other band has a dynamic moment of inertia which is mainly constant as a function of rotational frequency and exhibits a dramatic increase at the lowest frequencies. The observed dynamic moments of inertia are compared with the results of random phase approximation calculations based on the cranked shell model. Finally, the known excited SD band has been extended towards lower frequencies and new transitions have been found linking this band to the yrast SD band. The extracted {ital B}({ital E}1) values of the new linking transitions give further support for the possible octupole vibrational character of this band. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}

Abstract: The six superdeformed bands in {sup 193}Pb have been studied with the EUROGAM 2 {gamma}-ray spectrometer using the {sup 168}Er({sup 30}Si,5{ital n}){sup 193}Pb reaction. The results are discussed in terms of cranked-Hartree-Fock-Bogolioubov-Lipkin-Nogami calculations. From the @FF {sup (2)} moment of inertia behavior as function of the rotational frequency and the {ital M}1 and {ital E}2 decay competition of the superdeformed states, the bands are interpreted as three pairs of signature partners based on quasineutron excitations. Dipole transitions linking two signature partner superdeformed bands have been observed and, for the first time in lead isotopes, the branching ratio {ital B}({ital M}1)/{ital B}({ital E}2)=0.15{plus_minus}0.04 {mu}{sup 2}{sub {ital N}}/{ital e}{sup 2}b{sup 2} has been extracted. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}

Abstract: Excited states in the doubly-odd{sup 184}Au nucleus have been studied by in-beam {gamma}-ray spectroscopy. This nucleus was produced through the fusion-evaporation reactions {sup 165}Ho({sup 24}Mg, 5{ital n}), {sup 170}Yb({sup 19}F, 5{ital n}), and {sup 161}Dy({sup 27}Al, 4{ital n}). Abstract: From the observed competition between $M1$ and $E2$ $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ transitions deexciting the states of the two signature partner yrast superdeformed bands in $^{193}\mathrm{Tl}$, the ${i}_{\frac{13}{2}}$ ($\ensuremath{\Omega}=\frac{5}{2}$) intruder proton orbital is found to have $\frac{({g}_{K}\ensuremath{-}{g}_{R})K}{{Q}_{0}}=0.138\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.008$. A model dependent value of ${g}_{s}^{\mathrm{eff}}=(0.7\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.2){g}_{s}^{\mathrm{free}}$ is deduced. A saturation of the ${\mathcal{T}}^{2}$ moments of inertia, at rotational frequency $\ensuremath{\hbar}\ensuremath{\omega}g0.32$ MeV, is observed for the two bands. This feature is discussed in terms of exhausted quasineutron alignment in the presence of substantially reduced quasiproton alignment due to Pauli blocking.

Abstract: High-spin states in I-123 were populated in the reaction Se-80(Ca-48,p4n)I-123 at a beam energy of 207 MeV and gamma-ray coincidence events were measured using the Gammasphere spectrometer. Three weakly populated, high-spin rotational bands have been discovered with characteristics similar to those of the long collective bands recently observed in other nuclei of this mass region. Abstract: Lifetimes of states within the two strongest shears bands in 199 Pb have been measured using Doppler-shift techniques. The deduced B (M1) values confirm the proposed proton-particle neutron-hole structure of these bands. They show a decrease with increasing spin as expected within the tilted-axis cranking model. The B (E2) values confirm the low quadrupole collectivity and small deformation predicted by the calculations. The results give further support to the interpretation of the dipole bands in terms of the shears mechanism.
