Introduction: Due to the well-knownrelationship between inflammatory processes and carcinogenesis, the diagnosticand prognostic value of systemic inflammatory markers are at the focus ofresearch. This study aimed to investigate the predictive value of inflammatorycell data obtained from complete blood count in incidentally detected thyroidpapillary carcinoma.Methods: A total of 100 cases wereincluded in the study, consisting of histopathologically diagnosed multinodularhyperplasia (MNH) (N = 20), lymphocytic thyroiditis (LT) (n = 20), incidentalthyroid papillary carcinoma (ITPC) (n = 20), incidental papillary carcinoma andlymphocytic thyroiditis (ITPCLT) (n = 20), and thyroid papillary carcinoma(TPC) (n = 20). Neutrophil / lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/ lymphocyte ratio(PLR), platelet/neutrophil ratio (PNR), lymphocyte/ monocyte ratio (LMR) andlymphocyte/ eosinophil ratio (LER) values were compared between the groups.Results: No significant differencewas detected between the groups concerning the mean inflammatory cell andplatelet values. However, statistical significance was observed between theITPC and ITPCLT groups regarding the mean LMR and LER values (p=0.009 andp=0.037, respectively). Higher LMR was found in the ITPC group, while higherLER was seen in the ITPCLT group.Conclusions: We suggest that besidesratios such as NLR and PLR used as systemic inflammatory markers in carcinogeneticprocesses, the evaluation of LER and LMR might be imperative as well.Therefore, these potential markers should be studied in bigger series oftumors, especially where inflammatory processes are involved in the etiology.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate factors associated with emergency department (ED) admission and re-hospitalization within 1 year following a baseline asthma attack requiring hospitalization, and to investigate the role of complete blood count (CBC) parameters in these attacks. Methods: This was a retrospective, observational study of patients hospitalized due to an asthma attack between September 2015 and September 2017. The number of ED admissions and re-hospitalizations due to an asthma attack within a year of the original admission was investigated and predictive factors related to frequent ED admissions (=2) and re-hospitalization were analyzed. Results: Among the 59 study patients, the mean age was 58±16 years and 9 (15%) were male. Follow-up data revealed that 15 (25%) patients had frequent ED admissions and 20 (34%) patients were re-hospitalized within a year. Demographic details, additional diseases, and the baseline C-reactive protein level were not found to be predictive of subsequent asthma attacks. A baseline higher count of leukocytes (p=0.003) and neutrophils (p=0.001) and the ratio of neutrophils to lymphocytes (NLR) (p=0.017) were found to be statistically significant in patients with frequent ED admissions. The risk of re-hospitalization was found to increase with a higher baseline NLR (p=0.022) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) (p=0.024). Conclusion: CBC analysis can provide important clues for prognosis in asthma attacks. The NLR should be considered as a possible indicator of frequent ED admissions, and the NLR and PLR should be taken into account as potential signs of re-hospitalization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The prevalence of allergic asthma are increasing, and the clinical outcome and risk factors of immunotherapy in the treatment of allergy have not been well established. Especially, the impact of viral infection on cytokines in allergic inflammation has yet to be established. This study aimed to determine serum IL-3, IL-11 and IgE levels and blood eosinophil and neutrophil counts during a one-year follow up in patients with allergic asthma on immunotherapy and those on anti-asthmatic drugs only, in the presence of influenza-like illness. Materials and Methods: Sixty patients with allergic asthma were included in the prospective and comparative clinical study with randomization into two treatment groups. Each patient in the immunotherapy group was treated with subcutaneous specific immunotherapy. After patient recruitment, the serum IL-3, IL-11 and IgE levels and blood eosinophil and neutrophil counts and the frequency of influenza-like symptoms were recorded during a one-year follow up. Results: A large percentage of patients in the control group had flu symptoms compared to those in the immunotherapy group. The median serum IL-3 and the IL-11 levels were significantly higher in the immunotherapy group of patients compared to the control group. The median serum IgE level was significantly higher in the immunotherapy group of patients compared to the control group during second quarter of follow-up. Conclusion: The presence of influenza-like symptoms during allergen specific immunotherapy did not significantly change IL-3, IL-11 levels, neutrophil and eosinophil counts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
