1. Information Services in Triangle Area Charter Schools.

Abstract

Charter schools are defined by North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (DPI) as "a public school operated by a group of parents, teachers, and/or community members as a semi-autonomous school of choice within a school district, operating under a 'charter' with the State Board of Education." Since most charter schools do not have the space, funds, or experienced staff to start a library, the logical choice for charter schools to make is to form a partnership with the public library. This study was conducted with charter schools in four counties, in which surveys were sent to four public libraries (50% return) and 10 charter schools (70% return). Five schools reported offering an information skills curriculum and six reported that they possess a collection of books apart from what students use in the classroom. Six schools reported that their students use a public library; two schools have a formal agreement with the library. Four schools reported that their students use the public library during school hours. Only two schools reported that the library had developed programming for them. Schools had varying reasons for difficulties in using academic library resources. Both public libraries reported that a charter school had contacted them about library services available to students; collection development plans were not affected by the schools. Several possible solutions for charter school/library relationships are suggested. (AEF)

Abstract

To learn first hand how the libraries of North Carolina, especially public libraries, function in spite of budget cuts, a hearing was held in Lumberton (North Carolina) to hear the testimony of interested parties from the state and national levels and specifically from the congressional district of southeastern North Carolina. While library budgets are being drastically cut, costs continue to rise, as the witnesses attest. At this hearing, the Library of Congress introduced "American Memory," a project that will use compact discs and laser video disks to make important collections from the Library of Congress available to researchers, teachers, students, and the public at local libraries and schools. American Memory, which will eventually exist as an online resource, is the library of the future. A demonstration of the technology and search strategies of American Memory was presented. Twenty-three other witnesses addressed the hearing, including representatives of the American Library Association; representatives of state, academic, public, and depository libraries; and patrons and users of the local county library. 3. Paging Materials to Maintain Quality Library Service during a Two-Year Renovation

Abstract

Beginning in July 2002, the Health Sciences Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill underwent an 11 million dollar renovation. During three phases of the renovation, parts of the collection were inaccessible to patrons. In order to continue to make the library's collection available, library staff created a paging system. Patrons submitted requests for needed library materials using paper and electronic forms and library staff retrieved the requested items. The paging service was modified three times based on prior experience. Patrons were generally satisfied with the service. The renovation ended in December 2004. (Contains 1 figure and 7 notes.)

4. Information Needs and Bibliographic Problems of the Anthropology Departments at U. N. C. and Duke University.

Abstract

Research was conducted on information needs and bibliographic problems of anthropologists at Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Sixty-four faculty members and graduate students were surveyed, and twenty faculty members were interviewed. Many areas of information retrieval problems and the different ways anthropologists use their literature and libraries were explored, and results showed that differences between the various sub-groups of the study population were relatively unimportant. Forty percent of the faculty members did not often use libraries. Few anthropologists made use of abstracting and indexing services, but most were relatively satisfied with available library collections, although they found them to be inadequately organized and too scattered. Major retrieval problems were not finding enough multiple copies and difficulties in obtaining unpublished material. Eighty percent of the faculty members felt library research would be more important in the future. (Author/WH)
