In this paper, we propose a novel detector for single-channel long-haul coherent optical communications, termed stochastic digital backpropagation (SDBP), which takes into account noise from the optical amplifiers in addition to handling deterministic linear and nonlinear impairments. We discuss the design approach behind this detector, which is based on the maximum a posteriori (MAP) principle. As closed-form expressions of the MAP detector are not tractable for coherent optical transmission, we employ the framework of Bayesian graphical models, which allows a numerical evaluation of the proposed detector. Through simulations, we observe that by accounting for nonlinear signal—noise interactions, we achieve a significant improvement in system reach with SDBP over digital backpropagation (DBP) for systems with periodic inline optical dispersion compensation. In uncompensated links with high symbol rates, the performance difference in terms of system reach for SDBP over DBP is small. Abstract: We investigated the transient and steady-state processes of a probe field in an optical fiber. It is found that the nonlinear processes can be easily controlled via the coherent field and incoherent pumping field. The underlying mechanisms are much more practical than those in atomic systems, which may provide some possibilities for technological applications in optical-fiber communication. Abstract: A multi-fiber architecture is proposed to mitigate the nonlinear impairments in fiber-optic systems. The power launched to each fiber is reduced in multi-fiber architecture as compared to the case of single fiber leading to reduction in nonlinear impairments. The optical pulses propagating in the fibers undergo different amount of phase shifts and timing delays. Optical and electrical equalization techniques to compensate for these channel effects are discussed. Our numerical simulation results show that for unrepeatered systems, the performance (Q factor) is improved by 6.2dB using 8-fiber configuration as compared to single-fiber system. In addition, for multi-span system, the transmission reach at a bit error rate (BER) of 2.1×10−3 is quadrupled in 8-fiber configuration. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Simultaneous all-optical multi-channel regeneration based on second-order four-wave mixing (FWM) in a single highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) is studied. Interchannel crosstalk, especially cross gain saturation and generation of interchannel FWM, is avoided by properly time-interleaved channels. Preliminary experiment of 2ch×10Gbit/s operation shows simultaneous noise reduction of the two channels and good agreement with numerical analysis. Numerical investigation on 2ch×40Gbit/s operation using the same parameters as the experiment shows that the regeneration can improve qualities of both channels. For more number of channels and higher speed of operation, several parameters need to be adjusted to avoid interchannel crosstalks. Abstract: This paper presents a simple index-guiding square photonic crystal fiber (SPCF) where the core is surrounded by air holes with two different diameters. The proposed design is simulated through an efficient full-vector modal solver based on the finite difference method with anisotropic perfectly matched layers absorbing boundary condition. The nearly zero ultra-flattened dispersion SPCF with low confinement loss, small effective area as well as broadband supercontinuum (SC) spectra is targeted. Numerical results show that the designed SPCF has been achieved at a nearly zero ultra-flattened dispersion of 0±0.25ps/(nm·km) in a wavelength range of 1.38μm to 1.89μm (510nm band) which covers E, S, C, L and U communication bands, a low confinement loss of less than 10−7 dB/m in a wavelength range of 1.3μm to 2.0μm and a wide SC spectrum (FWHM=450nm) by using picosecond pulses at a center wavelength of 1.55μm. We then analyze the sensitivity of chromatic dispersion to small variations from the optimum value of specific structural parameters. The proposed index-guiding SPCF can be applicable in supercontinuum generation (SCG) covering such diverse fields as spectroscopy applications and telecommunication dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) sources. We experimentally demonstrate an all-optical bit error monitoring scheme based on the self-phase modulation occurring during the propagation in a highly nonlinear fiber followed by an optical bandpass filter. Abstract: This paper reports a detailed numerical study of soliton switching in a high as well as low birefringent nonlinear coupler. It is shown that by controlling the polarization angle one can have nearly 100% transmission with excellent switching characteristics. It is shown that soliton remains stable during its propagation inside the coupler. However it is observed that high birefringent coupler exhibits relatively better soliton stability. We show that the coupler could be used as a soliton switch even at an input peak power less than the critical power, the power at which 50–50 power sharing takes place between the two cores, just by a judicious choice of the polarization angle. Abstract: The comprehensive characters of delay time and delay bandwidth with distortion, signal wavelength dependence and delay bandwidth product in fiber optical parametric amplifier are investigated theoretically when the pump locates at anomalous dispersion region. The delay character of single pulse, data stream with certain bit pattern and pseudo random data stream are analyzed comprehensively. In this category of fiber optical parametric amplifier, the delay time and delay bandwidth product vary from signal wavelengths and bit rates. For the same nonlinear coefficient, pump power and fiber length, the diverse dependences of bit pattern in different signal wavelengths are found by numerical simulation. The impacts of pump power and fiber length on the delay character and distortion are also discussed. Abstract: I present new method of phase modulation to amplitude modulation conversion (PM/AM conversion) that utilizes integrating capabilities of fiber Bragg grating (FBG). I found that the wavelength converter based on fiber cross-phase modulation (XPM) and new method of PM/AM conversion have an order of magnitude higher conversion efficiency then the wavelength converter based on sideband filtration method and up to 6dB higher conversion efficiency then the converter based on the nonlinear optical loop mirror. Abstract: In this work, optical wavelet de-noising with several different types of wavelets such as db4, coif4 and dmey wavelet was applied at the end of the 40Gbit/s multi-span intensity-modulated fiber communication systems. The results of numerical simulations carried out in different fiber links demonstrated that the optical wavelet de-noising method could remove the random amplitude fluctuation induced by the interaction of EDFA’s ASE noise and optical fiber’s dispersion and nonlinearity. The SNR and BER curves of the optical bit sequence without and with optical wavelet de-noising in dispersion compensation fiber link were plotted to show the effectiveness of the wavelet de-noising in the fiber-optic communication systems and wavelet de-noising with demy wavelet can achieve better result than with other type wavelet. Abstract: Four-wave mixing process with a large group index difference of the signal and idler pulses in a nonlinear optical fiber is theoretically investigated when the pump is continuous light. We prove that in the four-wave mixing process, the signal and idler waves would finally propagate in a common group velocity in spite of their different group indices. When the effective phase mismatch in four-wave mixing is not zero, their carrier frequencies shift in different directions. The asymptotic result of the signal and idler shape and carrier frequency shift are obtained. The theoretical prediction is validated by the numerical simulation. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: We investigate analytically and numerically the modulational instability (MI) in optical fiber, where the effect of noninstantaneous nonlinear response as well as stochastic coefficients are taken into account. Applying the linear stability analysis and stochastic calculus, we show that the MI gain spectrum reads as the maximal eigenvalue of a constant matrix. In the limiting cases of small fluctuations, we give explicit expressions for the MI gain spectra. In the general configurations, we derive an explicit form of the effective matrix and compute numerically the maximal eigenvalue. The moment MI peak is enhanced and the delayed Raman response reduces the maximum MI gain caused by stochasticity both in anomalous and normal dispersion regimes. Numerical simulations of the full stochastic nonlinear Schródinger equation show that, the phenomenon of MI gives rise to periodic pulse arrays of waves train, as well as to a chain of peaks with continuously growing amplitudes. Abstract: It is experimentally shown that six-channel C+L-band 80-GHz short pulse trains are generated based on parametric process in highly-nonlinear fiber (HNLF). By launching a pulsed pump and three-channel continuous wave (CW) lights into 1-km HNLF, three-channel signals are amplified and three-channel idlers are generated. The waveforms of the generated 80-GHz short pulses are measured by an auto-correlator. The bit-error-rate (BER) of each channel is analyzed numerically. Abstract: In this paper, a novel all-optical bit-error indicating scheme is numerically studied. The bit-error indicating function is achieved by two all-optical processing stages. Firstly, the amplified original bit stream propagates through a high-nonlinear fiber and experiences self-phase modulation which causes intensity-dependent spectrum broadening and split. And then, the bit stream output from the high-nonlinear fiber is filtered by a band-pass filter with the same central wavelength as the original bit stream to generate an error bit indicating signal. The error bit indicating signal, in which only the “Error” bits have the highest peak power, is synchronous with the delayed original bit stream. Therefore, the position of the “Error” bits in the original bit stream can be identified by setting only one judge threshold in the error bit indicating signal. The scheme is demonstrated for an 80Gb/s bit stream with return-to-zero format by simulation. The results show that the scheme can be used for the all-optical bit-error indicating of the super high bit-rate systems using the return-to-zero format which is favored in the optical time division multiplexing transmission systems. We propose and demonstrate a novel approach to identify linear and nonlinear propagation regimes of an optical signal in an optical fiber link by using chaos analysis. We show that the chaotic characteristics of a propagating optical signal are affected by both the chromatic dispersion and the nonlinear effects in the optical fiber. Linear or nonlinear behavior is detected by determining the maximum Lyapunov exponent of the signal and the use of the recurrence plot technique. An experimental demonstration is performed using 10-Gbpssignal propagation in a 100-kmfiber link with different launched optical powers. Chaos analysis shows a clear identification of the linear and nonlinear optical propagation regimes by using a classification scheme based on a multilayer neural network.
