Laminated insulating glass units (IGUs), commonly used in modern buildings, are prone to shattering from explosive loads, causing significant damage and loss. Existing research on IGUs is constrained by a lack of experimental validation and comprehensive numerical analyses, as large-scale explosion tests are rarely reported due to safety and cost concerns. Furthermore, previous modeling efforts often oversimplify critical factors such as the supporting structure, component interactions, strain rate effects, hourglass energy, and failure criteria, leading to an inadequate representation of glass behavior under explosive loads. This paper addresses these gaps by conducting large-scale explosive test on glass system and utilizing sophisticated nonlinear dynamic analysis with LS-DYNA for simulation. The research considers the influence of the support system and incorporates detailed considerations of component interactions, constitutive relationships, and strain rate effects in the numerical simulations. The results confirm that the proposed model successfully replicates the crack patterns and damage observed in experimental test. Also, it accurately predicts the trajectory, quantity, and size distribution of glass fragments. Conventional co-rotational formulations for geometrically nonlinear analysis are based on the assumption that the finite element is only subjected to nodal loads and as a result, they are not accurate for the elements under distributed member loads. The magnitude and direction of member loads are treated as constant in the global coordinate system, but they are essentially varying in the local coordinate system for the element undergoing a large rigid body rotation, leading to the change of nodal moments at element ends. Thus, there is a need to improve the co-rotational formulations to allow for the effect. This paper proposes a new consistent co-rotational formulation for both Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko two-dimensional beam-column elements subjected to distributed member loads. It is found that the equivalent nodal moments are affected by the element geometric change and consequently contribute to a part of geometric stiffness matrix. From this study, the results of both eigenvalue buckling and second-order direct analyses will be significantly improved. Several examples are used to verify the proposed formulation with comparison of the traditional method, which demonstrate the accuracy and reliability of the proposed method in buckling analysis of frame structures under distributed member loads using a single element per member. The main objective of this paper is to validate a finite-element (FE) modeling protocol to simulate thin-walled members for static and dynamic analyses. Arbitrary-shaped cross-sections, including open, closed, and multicellular sections can be efficiently modeled for further advanced study. The framework is thoroughly validated and verified using the existing analytical and closed-form solutions, as well as experimental results available in literature. This work is motivated by the higher accuracy of the shell FE-based modeling to capture the local and global complex behaviors of thin-walled members with asymmetric sections. Higher computational expenses, however, are required for such sophisticated shell finite element models (SFEM). Accordingly, a framework hosted in MATLAB and implementing the python scripting technique in ABAQUS, is developed, which includes eigen buckling, static nonlinear, modal frequency and dynamic time-history analyses. For a more modeling convenience, various parameters are incorporated such as imperfections, residual stresses, material definitions, element choice, meshing control, and boundary conditions. Several examples are provided to illustrate the application of the proposed framework, and to prove the robustness and accuracy of the generated FE models. This paper concludes with the efficiency of implementing SFEMs for simulating thin-walled members; thereby, establishing a more accurate and advanced structural analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
