Abstract

Jalal Al-e Ahmad was a leading Iranian writer and critic, best known for his long essay, Gharbzadegi or Weststruckness, which many critics controversially regard as a harbinger of the Islamic revolution. There is no doubt that, willy-nilly, what was believed to be his rejection of western civilization was posthumously very influential in shaping public opinion. Dabashi's largely uncritical biography is useful in its description of Al-e Ahmad's life but is flawed in its interpretation and analysis of his works. In particular, it ignores Al-e Ahmad's extensive resort to conspiratorial theories and his cavalier treatment of not just Iranian but world history to prove his case. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This edited volume presents the results of a large comparative survey in 39 European countries about the role of political science and political scientists in diverse policy advisory systems. It delivers a fascinating view about the differently institutionalized networks between governmental, societal, and scientific actors of policy advice, documenting amongst other the different scope, content, and channels of advice, and offering, finally, a typology of advisors, distinguishing pure academics, experts, opinionated scholars, and public intellectuals. The book contains very useful introductions to theoretical approaches to policy advice, and the theoretical and empirical essentials of the survey, as well as 12 chapters about different European countries from Albania to the UK, and a final comparative view of different patterns in Europe. This volume, however, does not provide answers to all our theoretical and empirical queries, but it is an immensely valuable and readable contribution to the ongoing debates about the characteristics of policy advice, the professionalization of political science, and its social and political impact, as well as a very good foundation to further research. Abstract

Following the coup d'etat of 1953 and the trauma caused by it gradually in the 60s and 70s in Iran a new subjectivity, a new vision for the Iranian subject of modernity emerged. Iranians were called by their intellectuals to overcome the trauma, which was called "occidentosis", a state in which everything that they try to create and produce is "stilborn". They were asked to no longer accept predestination and quietism, developing courage instead, becoming militant and finding their own, authentic way of encountering technologies and the West. This paper systematically demonstrates that the new subjectivity, which can be seen in the Iranian prose and non-fiction in the 60s and 70s is heavily influenced by European intellectual ideas.
