The book offers shrewd insights into the underlying technological structures of European integration. Its analysis commences in the 1850s rather than the 1950s; this offers a new perspective that shows how a new elite of experts which grew out of industrialization carried out plans for closer European collaboration. InLabour-Intensive Industrialization in Global History, 11 leading economic historians explore whether East Asia's pathway into modern economic growth can be meaningfully characterized as a trajectory of ‘labour-intensive industrialization’, a route distinct from the North Atlantic capital-intensive path as well as the more diffuse paths of industrialization in the labour scarce regions of the Southern hemisphere. This review essay situates this collective volume in the wider literature on modern economic growth to stake out its main arguments. It proceeds with an integrated overview of the main chapters to discuss some of the shared conclusions as well as some of the internal disagreements. It concludes with some critical reflections on the viability of the concept of labour-intensive industrialization, as well as the possible implications for areas such as Sub-Saharan Africa, which have largely remained outside the global diffusion of modern manufacturing. The article reviews the book "The Dragon in the Room: China and the Future of Latin American Industrialization," by Kevin Gallagher and Roberto Porzecanski.

This article presents a review of “The Origin of Modern Industry,” written by Professor Zhang Weiliang, which discusses British industrialization. Zhang is also the author of “The History of the Commercialization of British Society: 1500-1700.” Zhang argues that a country’s modernization process can be categorized as occurring either as a “modernization from within” or as a “modernization from without.” The advent of British industrialization was a typical example of “modernization from within.” Zhang explains the concept of proto-industrialization, which was characterized by the increasing involvement of farmers in market-oriented production. The transfer from proto-industrialization to industrialization was pushed by British agricultural and social changes, increased consumer needs, the liberalization of merchant activities, and technological modernization.

The reviewed book examines the development of a regionally important city in Western Hungary. Industrial development and new modes of transportation and communication were accompanied by population growth and social restructuring during the 19th century. The study analyzes the causes and effects of these changes, and places them in the national context.
