1. The African American Sermon As an Exemplar of Culturally Relevant Adult Education.

Abstract

Historically, the Black Church was culturally responsive to the needs of their community. In order to meet the needs of African American adult learners, the church had to assume many roles one of which was that of educator. Like many informal institutions of learning, the Black Church has been overlooked as a site for adult education research. Ten sermons of African-American preachers were analyzed to identify culturally relevant themes and their applicability for use in adult education classrooms. These five themes that relate to different aspects of African American life were revealed: (1) self-ethnic personalities/experiences; (2) self-ethnic social experiences; (3) self-ethnic psycho-cultural; (4) Africentric affirmations; and (5) self-ethnic metaphors. These conclusions were drawn from the thematic analyses: (1) African American sermons can provide adult educators with culturally relevant names that reflect self-ethnic personalities with which learners can identify; (2) negative self-ethnic social and psycho-cultural experiences of learners can be mitigated by educators made more aware; and (3) the polyrhythmic cadence of African-American sermons grow out of an oral tradition; and (4) affirmation themes are one way to mitigate against negative self-image. Abstract

The rapid increase in the number of books published in the United States, especially during the past decade, has been the subject of much comment. Statistics are collected regularly by the trade papers, and these figures give the number of books for each year in each of several well-defined classes. The charts included in this bulletin exhibit a block for each year from 1890 to 1916, both inclusive, and the figures in the middle of each block indicate the actual number of books published during the year. The figures in the upper part of each block give the number of reprints or new editions, and those in the lower part of the block indicate the number of books by foreign authors. 3. Vietnam through a Different Lens: Fiction, Memoirs, and History.

Abstract

Literary accounts help society gain a better understanding of the Vietnam War by providing coverage missing from historical accounts of this period. Literature on the Vietnam War has focused on a number of issues: America's initial involvement in Southeast Asia, the American perspective on the war, the experience of the American soldier, and the experience of people at home. Major themes are the moral implications, violence, racism, and personal consequences of participation in the war. Much of the importance of fiction and memoirs lies in their ability to depict the world of the combat soldier and to present the moral dilemma posed by this particular war. The most recent works on the war indicate that the basic question involved in interpreting the Vietnam experience--deciding whether the war was a war like any other or a unique experience in American history--is still unresolved. None of the literary works on Vietnam provide an overview of the war as a whole. While literature does not answer the fundamental historical questions that historians have raised concerning the Vietnam War, it does provide a vital human dimension of the war which complements historical treatments. Abstract

In 1990, the American Library Association published its Guidelines on Subject Access to Individual Works of Fiction, Drama, Etc. Neither the 1990 Guidelines nor the work's subsequent 2000 edition is terribly concerned with explaining why increased subject access to works of imaginative literature has come to be needed now more than in the baker's century after Cutter first allowed for such access. Inherent to the 1990 Guidelines is the notion that works of imagination have a value such that they deserve to be accessed in more or less the same manner that nonfiction works are accessed, through aboutness as well as whatness. The paper purports that the origins of this change in cataloging policy are far from humble, that they can in fact be located in a broad swath of social historiography and literary criticism. Abstract

Iterations of Law is a valuable resource on the legal history of colonial India. The essays in this edited volume uncover the lived experience of law in the tradition of social history. The contributors discuss and rework ideas of legal pluralism, law's violence, and the legacy of colonial law. Their embrace of legal archives other than the judgment, such as the stamp paper, and political and bureaucratic speeches is a welcome methodological intervention in the field. This review examines the volume's contribution to two persistent debates in legal history: the perceived continuity of the colonial law and legal system, and the agency of the colonial subject vis-à-vis law. Read this way, the contributions emphasise several points of contact between subject and government that allowed the consolidation and legitimisation of colonial rule. Though greater engagement with law and a South Asian emphasis would have added much value, the review concludes that the volume is essential reading for legal historians as well as scholars analysing the conditions of authority and legitimacy of law. Abstract

There are few sociology texts that acquire truly seminal status. This brief paper, however, reflects on one of the most celebrated and often cited works in British urban sociology. It seeks to explain: (1) the book's initial impact on debates and research in the field of ‘race and ethnic relations’; (2) the key controversies sparked by its theoretical positioning; and (3) why, and in what ways, it remains of relevance almost half a century after it was written. It concludes that there are two reasons for its continued appeal and significance. First, it placed housing firmly at the centre of debates about the position of Britain's migrant communities; second, it illustrates the potential of sociological research. At a time when controversies rage about ‘impact’, here is a work that not only contributed to our theoretical understanding of contemporary society, but also illustrated the value of ‘public sociology’ by engaging with the polity to bring about social change. Talbot Collection finding aid. Description by Wade Lola The author of this physical charter is unknown, but it was most likely drafted by the imperial wizard or his assistants. The charter was signed on October 24, 1925 but the actual production date is also unknown. The charter seems to be a basic outline that was given to chapters of the KKK, to fill out at their discretion. The purpose of the charter, is to introduce this chapter, of Auburn, Maine into the "Invisible Empire”, and to verify their right to operate under the conditions of the “Imperial Palace.” Throughout history, it has been a requirement of small-town chapters of the KKK, to hold such meetings, in which they sign their names and swear to serve the imperial Wizard. During this time, droves of men were flocking to join the KKK in any way they could. This charter is encased in a glass frame. The charter was printed on cream-colored paper, and filled in with bold black ink. The title “Knights of the Ku Klux Klan” is darkly bolded and expressed with very ornate script. The text has blanks where the men would fill in their names and the contextual information that would align with the Auburn chapter KKK. In the middle of the paper, there is an orange stamp that is superimposed over the text depicting two men, ornamented in KKK garb, atop horseback. Within the stamp, are the words “Without Fear and Without Reproach” which was a common phrase used by the KKK on medallions and coins in the era. The charter is signed and validated by the Imperial Wizard, Exalted Cyclops, and a witness. Description by Jasper DeMoranville The ‘second coming’ of the Ku Klux Klan is a hate group that began in Atlanta, Georgia in October 1915. It existed in Maine from 1920 to 1931. It pandered to ‘plain people’, ‘hicks’, and ‘small-town dwellers’, hoping to recruit others into their cause, and be assured of local support. The group retained its white-supremacy beliefs, but also became anti-Catholic, attacking what was, at the time, another minority. They were also anti-semitic, and generally against foreigners, or ‘aliens’. The KKK was founded in Pulaski, Tennessee by a group of confederate veterans. They met as a social get together and ‘accidentally discovered that their strange uniforms ‘had a great influence over the lawless but superstitious blacks.’’ They titled themselves the ‘Invisible Empire of the South’. During this early period is when the violence against African Americans really began. During the time that black people were finally gaining positions of power in politics, the KKK made it their mission to hurt any republican, black or white, leaders or voters, just to make sure their views remained dominant. 44. Democratic Decline and the Politics of the Upswing: How the United States May Have Come Together a Century Ago but Can It Do It Again?

Abstract

Robert Putman's The Upswing (written with Shaylyn Romney Garrett) provides a powerful meta-analysis of American social, political, economic and cultural change throughout the twentieth century. What this analysis reveals is the existence of an almost perfect arc of social progress which begins from a low position around the Gilded Age at the beginning of the twentieth century and then climbs across all variables until reaching a highpoint around 1960. The Progressive Era, Putnam argues, engineered an 'upswing' against inequality, polarisation, social disarray and a culture of self-centredness. Since then, however, the data suggest that a severe downswing has occurred which explains the existence of deep divisions and polarised politics in the United States. Putnam's core argument is simple: The United States has pulled itself out of a trough before and it can do it again. In a post-Trump context, this argument could hardly be more welcome which may explain the rave reviews this book has generally received. Nevertheless, the core weakness of The Upswing is that it arguably tells us far more about how the United States 'came together a century ago' but far less about how it 'can do it again' in the future.
