Satellite communication is crucial for 6 G industrial wireless networks due to its comprehensive communication services, but traditional methods face challenges such as high latency, limited bandwidth, high cost, and integration with terrestrial networks. This highlights the need for innovative communication methods to boost satellite communication efficiency, reliability, and coverage within the context of 6 G industrial applications, which is attempted to address by this research. RISs (Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces) are thin sheets with tiny antennas that are programmed to manipulate radio signals. The RIS has the potential to revolutionize industrial wireless communication by providing greater dynamic and goal-oriented control over radio signals. From there, the wireless environment is being transformed into a service. Besides, the NOMA (Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access) mechanism is a highly effective radio access method in advanced wireless communications that optimizes spectrum utilization and offers improved spectrum efficiency, lower latency, more reliability, and increased connectivity. The current industrial communication network faces limitations such as limited capacity, signal interference overload, complex and expensive infrastructure, and latency issues. The fusion of RIS and NOMA is seen as promising strategy to meet the stringent demands of next-generation networks for immense connectivity. It is particularly innovative for the demanding environment of smart factories by enabling efficient resource sharing, dynamic signal control, ultra-reliable, low-latency communication, cost-effective network, overcoming the signal interference and simplifying the network infrastructure. In this article, we propose a novel approach for device-to-device satellite communication in industrial networks. This approach leverages a RIS (Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface) -assisted cooperative network with NOMA (Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access) and NL-PDDRL (Nonlinear Partial Differential Deep Reinforced Learning) termed AONPDDR (Alternating Optimized and Nonlinear Partial Differential Deep Reinforced) communication. This article focuses on important aspects related to industrial communication networks such as power consumption, energy efficiency, data delivery rate, data loss rate, throughput, latency, coverage, false alarm rate, and bit error rate. The Alternating Optimization-based RIS configuration algorithm optimizes reflecting elements in RIS by maximizing channel vectors and providing a sophisticated upper bound on the highest number of reflective elements. Next, The NL-PDDRL algorithm is designed to function effectively despite environmental uncertainties and constraints. The results indicate that the proposed AONPDDR method outperforms previous benchmark methods in system-achievable aspects.

Vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication facilitates seamless interaction between vehicles and the surrounding infrastructure. Recently, there has been a notable surge in research interest in ambient backscatter communications (AmBC), primarily due to its ability to enable battery-free communication. Concurrently, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have garnered attention as a promising technology, particularly for the advancement of cellular systems beyond 5G. Additionally, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) assumes a pivotal role in enhancing spectrum utilization. This paper proposes a new RIS-enhanced NOMA-AmBC system where all channels are characterized by Nakagami-m fading and with the main objective of assessing the performance of such system. To this end, new closed-form expressions for the outage probabilities (OPs) were derived under the practical assumption of imperfect successive interference cancellation (SIC). In addition, to gain a deep insight into the system’s performance, we derived asymptotic, upper-bound, and lower-bound expressions for the OPs. Furthermore, we proposed a power allocation optimization problem to achieve an outage-optimal performance. To validate the analytical results, we conducted extensive investigations using Monte Carlo simulations, which indicates a high degree of consistency. Moreover, our results underscore the remarkable performance improvements achieved by the RIS-assisted AmBC-NOMA system when compared to both the traditional benchmark AmBC-NOMA system and the RIS-assisted orthogonal multiple access (AmBCOMA) counterparts.

In the context of "beyond 5 G" (B5G) mobile communication, a better quality of service (QoS) with a minimum power budget is one of the prime requirements. To improve QoS or sum rate, utilizing reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) in a non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) network is an effective approach. This paper focuses on a RIS-assisted backscatter-enabled NOMA network where the base station (BS) has to serve a backscatter device (BD) and dead-zone users simultaneously by achieving the maximum possible sum rate in a given power budget. With the help of joint optimization at BS, RIS, and BD, the beamforming vectors, RIS phase shift matrix (PSM), and power splitting (PS) ratio, respectively, are optimized such that the user's QoS and BD's energy harvesting constraints can be achieved for a given power constraint while increasing the sum rate for dead zone users. Particularly, the beamforming vectors and the phases of the RIS elements are alternately optimized using a lower bound, semidefinite relaxation (SDR), and Gaussian randomization techniques until they reach convergence. According to simulation results, the proposed scheme (RIS-BD-NOMA) always performs better than the baseline schemes, RIS-NOMA with random phases, and RIS-NOMA with optimized phases. Simultaneous transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (STAR-RISs) can reflect signals and transmissive signals simultaneously and can extend the coverage of signals. A conventional RIS mainly focuses on the case where the signal source and the target are on the same side. In this paper, a STAR-RIS-assisted non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) downlink communication system is considered to maximize the achievable rate for users by jointly optimizing the power-allocation coefficients, active beamforming, and STAR-RIS beamforming under the mode-switching (MS) protocol. The critical information of the channel is first extracted using the Uniform Manifold Approximation and Projection (UMAP) method. Based on the key extracted channel features, STAR-RIS elements and users are clustered individually using the fuzzy C-mean clustering (FCM) method. The alternating optimization method decomposes the original optimization problem into three sub-optimization problems. Finally, the sub-problems are converted to unconstrained optimization methods using penalty functions for the solution. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has recently been envisioned to provide an adaptable channel for futuristic wireless communication networks. This work characterized the impact of hardware impairments in the downlink RIS-aided non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) wireless networks. We considered the hardware impairments in the transceivers of the base station (BS) and users, phase error at the RIS and the imperfect successive interference cancellation (SIC) for the NOMA users. Specifically, the performance is evaluated by deriving the closed-form expressions for the outage probability (OP), spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE). Additionally, the performance of the orthogonal multiple access (OMA) system is also evaluated and compared with its NOMA counterpart. The RIS-aided NOMA outperforms OMA for the ideal hardware scenario. However, the hardware impairments significantly deteriorate RIS-aided NOMA's performance compared to RIS-aided OMA. Further, we have also compared the proposed RIS-aided NOMA with the baseline full-duplex relaying (FDR) based NOMA. The results show that the gains are more significant for a RIS-aided system than FDR.

Abstract The future sixth generation (6G) is going to face the significant challenges of massive connections and green communication. Recently, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) have been proposed as two key technologies to solve the above problems. Motivated by this fact, we consider a downlink RIS-aided NOMA system, where the source aims to communicate with the two NOMA users via RIS. Considering future network supporting real-time service, we investigate the system performance with the view of effective capacity (EC), which is an important evaluation metric of delay sensitive systems. Specifically, we derive the analytical expressions of the EC of the near and far users. To obtain more useful insights, we deduce the analytical approximation expressions of the EC in the low signal-to-noise-ratio approximation by utilizing Taylor expansion. Moreover, we provide the results of orthogonal multiple access (OMA) for the purpose of comparison. It is found that (1) The number of RIS components and the transmission power of the source have important effects on the performance of the considered system; (2) Compared with OMA, NOMA system has higher EC due to the short transmission time.

The evolution of Internet of Things (IoT) networks has been studied owing to the associated benefits in useful applications. Although the evolution is highly helpful, the increasing day-to-day demands of mobile users have led to immense requirements for further performance improvements such as efficient spectrum utilization, massive device connectivity, and high data rates. Fortunately, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) techniques have recently been introduced as two possible current-generation emerging technologies with immense potential of addressing the above-mentioned issues. In this paper, we propose the integration of RIS to the existing techniques (i.e., NOMA and relaying) to further enhance the performance for mobile users. We focus on a performance analysis of two-user group by exploiting two main performance metrics including outage probability and ergodic capacity. We provide closed-form expressions for both performance metrics to highlight how NOMA-aided RIS systems provide more benefits compared with the benchmark based on traditional orthogonal multiple access (OMA). Monte-Carlo simulations are performed to validate the correctness of obtained expressions. The simulations show that power allocation factors assigned to two users play a major role in the formation of a performance gap among two users rather than the setting of RIS. Compared with the conventional reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), simultaneous transmitting and reflecting intelligent omini-surfaces (STAR-IOSs) are able to achieve 360° coverage “smart radio environments”. By splitting the energy or altering the active number of STAR-IOS elements, STAR-IOSs provide high flexibility of successive interference cancellation (SIC) orders for non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems. Based on the aforementioned advantages, this paper investigates a STAR-IOS-aided downlink NOMA network with randomly deployed users. We first propose three tractable channel models for different application scenarios, namely the central limit model, the curve fitting model, and the M-fold convolution model. More specifically, the central limit model fits the scenarios with large-size STAR-IOSs while the curve fitting model is extended to evaluate multi-cell networks. However, these two models cannot obtain accurate diversity orders. Hence, we figure out the M-fold convolution model to derive accurate diversity orders. We consider three protocols for STAR-IOSs, namely, the energy splitting (ES) protocol, the time switching (TS) protocol, and the mode switching (MS) protocol. Based on the ES protocol, we derive closed-form analytical expressions of outage probabilities for the paired NOMA users by the central limit model and the curve fitting model. Based on three STAR-IOS protocols, we derive the diversity gains of NOMA users by the M-fold convolution model. The analytical results reveal that the diversity gain of NOMA users is equal to the active number of STAR-IOS elements. Numerical results indicate that 1) in high signal-to-noise ratio regions, the central limit model performs as an upper bound of the simulation results, while a lower bound is obtained by the curve fitting model; 2) the TS protocol has the best performance but requesting more time blocks than other protocols; 3) the ES protocol outperforms the MS protocol as the ES protocol has higher diversity gains. In this work, we study the outage performance of a reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS)-aided wireless systems in the presence of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). In particular, different power factors are allocated to users which belong a dedicated group. We derive exact outage probability of two users in a group. Specifically, it is assumed that the RIS is placed between the source and the users and far user has better performance under assistance of RIS. We also provide comparison analysis to investigate the effect of the main parameters on the outage performance of our proposed system, such as the number of tunable elements of the RIS, power allocation factors, target rates and the average signal-to-noise ratio at the base station. If we set small tunable elements for RIS, we can obtain the best performance. By using Monte-Carlo simulation, we verify our analytical results via simulations. The future of wireless communications looks exciting with the potential new use cases and challenging requirements of future 6th generation (6G) wireless networks. Since the traditional wireless communications, the propagation medium has been perceived as a randomly behaving entity between the transmitter and the receiver, which degrades the quality of the received signal due to the uncontrollable interactions of the transmitted radio waves with the surrounding objects. The recent advent of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) in wireless communications enables, on the other hand, network operators to control the radio waves (the scattering, reflection, and refraction characteristics) to eliminate the negative effects of natural wireless propagation. Recent results have revealed that non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) benefits from RIS mechanism which can effectively provide effective transmissions. Motivated by the potential of these emerging technologies, we study the impact of hardware impairment in RIS-aided NOMA system in term of performance metrics. We then derive analytical expressions of outage probability and throughput as main performance metrics. Simulations are conducted to validate the analytical expressions. We find that the number of meta-surfaces in RIS, transmit power at the base station, power allocation factors play important role to demonstrate improvement in system performance of RIS relying on NOMA compared with orthogonal multiple access (OMA). Numerical results are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed RIS-aided NOMA transmission strategies.

A novel framework is proposed for integrating reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) enabled wireless networks, where an RIS is deployed for enhancing the service quality of the UAV. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique is invoked to further improve the spectrum efficiency of the network, while mobile users (MUs) are considered as roaming continuously. The energy consumption minimizing problem is formulated by jointly designing the movement of the UAV, phase shifts of the RIS, power allocation policy from the UAV to MUs, as well as determining the dynamic decoding order. A decaying deep Q-network (D-DQN) based algorithm is proposed for tackling this pertinent problem. In the proposed D-DQN based algorithm, the central controller is selected as an agent for periodically observing the state of UAV-enabled wireless network and for carrying out actions to adapt to the dynamic environment. In contrast to the conventional DQN algorithm, the decaying learning rate is leveraged in the proposed D-DQN based algorithm for attaining a tradeoff between accelerating training speed and converging to the local optimal. Numerical results demonstrate that: 1) In contrast to the conventional Q-learning algorithm, which cannot converge when being adopted for solving the formulated problem, the proposed D-DQN based algorithm is capable of converging with minor constraints; 2) The energy dissipation of the UAV can be significantly reduced by integrating RISs in UAV-enabled wireless networks; 3) By designing the dynamic decoding order and power allocation policy, the RIS-NOMA case consumes 11.7% less energy than the RIS-OMA case. Power-domain non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has become a promising technology to exploit the new dimension of the power domain to enhance the spectral efficiency of wireless networks. However, most existing NOMA schemes rely on the strong assumption that users’ channel gains are quite different, which may be invalid in practice. To unleash the potential of power-domain NOMA, we propose a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-empowered NOMA scheme to introduce desirable channel gain differences among the users by adjusting the phase shifts at the RIS. Our goal is to minimize the total transmit power by jointly optimizing the beamforming vectors at the base station, the phase-shift matrix at the RIS, and user ordering. To address challenge due to the highly coupled optimization variables, we present an alternating optimization framework to decompose the non-convex bi-quadratically constrained quadratic problem under a specific user ordering into two rank-one constrained matrices optimization problems via matrix lifting. To accurately detect the feasibility of the non-convex rank-one constraints and improve performance by avoiding early stopping in the alternating optimization procedure, we equivalently represent the rank-one constraint as the difference between nuclear norm and spectral norm. A difference-of-convex (DC) algorithm is further developed to solve the resulting DC programs via successive convex relaxation, followed by establishing the convergence of the proposed DC-based alternating optimization method. We further propose an efficient user ordering scheme with closed-form expressions, considering both the channel conditions and users’ target data rates. Simulation results validate the ability of an RIS in enlarging the channel-gain difference when the users’ original channel conditions are similar and the superiority of the proposed DC-based alternating optimization method in reducing the total transmit power. A novel framework is proposed for the deployment and passive beamforming design of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) with the aid of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technology. The problem of joint deployment, phase shift design, as well as power allocation in the multiple-input-single-output (MISO) NOMA network is formulated for maximizing the energy efficiency with considering users particular data requirements. To tackle this pertinent problem, machine learning approaches are adopted in two steps. Firstly, a novel long short-term memory (LSTM) based echo state network (ESN) algorithm is proposed to predict users’ tele-traffic demand by leveraging a real dataset. Secondly, a decaying double deep Q-network (D3QN) based position-acquisition and phase-control algorithm is proposed to solve the joint problem of deployment and design of the RIS. In the proposed algorithm, the base station, which controls the RIS by a controller, acts as an agent. The agent periodically observes the state of the RIS-enhanced system for attaining the optimal deployment and design policies of the RIS by learning from its mistakes and the feedback of users. Additionally, it is proved that the proposed D3QN based deployment and design algorithm is capable of converging within mild conditions. Simulation results are provided for illustrating that the proposed LSTM-based ESN algorithm is capable of striking a tradeoff between the prediction accuracy and computational complexity. Finally, it is demonstrated that the proposed D3QN based algorithm outperforms the benchmarks, while the NOMA-enhanced RIS system is capable of achieving higher energy efficiency than orthogonal multiple access (OMA) enabled RIS system. In this paper, we investigate the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) empowered D2D communications system, where multiple reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are deployed to enhance the service quality for mobile D2D groups. Meanwhile, the RISs can further improve the NOMA gains with artificially controlled channel conditions. Although multiple distributed deployment RISs can enhance the coverage for the multiple mobile D2D groups. However, the joint reflective capabilities of multiple RISs require a more complex phase shift design. Therefore, to maximize the average sum data rate of all D2D groups, a multi-agent multi-pass deep Q-network (MAMP-DQN) based framework is invoked to optimize the sub-channel assignment and power allocation of mobile D2D groups, as well as the phase shifts adjustment policy. Specifically, the actions in the formulated Markov game (MG) are modeled in the hybrid discrete–continuous structure, and the MP-DQN algorithm is invoked to deal with the hybrid action. Our simulation results indicate that the multiple RISs can significantly improve the average sum data rate of D2D groups. Moreover, the NOMA-empowered D2D groups are capable of achieving a gain of 27% in contrast with the OMA scheme in terms of the sum data rate.
