Abstract

International audience; Microbial electrochemical snorkel (MES) is a short-circuited microbial fuel cell applicable to water treatment that does not produce energy but requires lower cost for its implementation. Few reports have already described its water treatment capabilities but no deeper electrochemical analysis were yet performed. We tested various materials (iron, stainless steel and porous graphite) and configurations of snorkel in order to better understand the rules that will control in a wetland the mixed potential of this self-powered system. We designed a model snorkel that was studied in laboratory and on the field. We confirmed the development of MES by identifying anodic and cathodic parts, by measuring the current between them and by analyzing microbial ecology in laboratory and field experiments. An important application is denitrification of surface water. Here we discuss the influence of nitrate on its electrochemical response and denitrification performances. Introducing nitrate caused the increase of the mixed potential of MES and of current at a potential value relatively more positive than for nitrate-reducing biocathodes described in the literature. The major criteria for promoting application of MES in artificial wetland dedicated to mitigation of non-point source nitrate pollution from agricultural water are considered.

Abstract

The water quality of the Alsacian aquifer degrades principally because of nitrates. This pollution originates partly from the vineyard situated in the Piemont area of the Vosges massif which is a preferential zone of aquifer recharge. The main objective of the Enherbement du Vignoble Alsacien (EVA) project is to quantify the impact of an agri-environmental technique : to put grass in one out of two vine inter rows. The methodology of this work is based on the association of two approaches : field experiment and physical modelling. Two vine plots were chosen at Rouffach (Haut-Rhin, France). Both were instrumented and monitored from May 1998 to October 2000. One represents a witness plot, with chemical weeding in the inter row and the other one has a grass cover on one out of two inter rows. The field approach tried to assess the main terms of water and nitrogen balances. Furthermore the water and nitrate uptakes of the different covers (grass and vine) were simulated by using Riou et al (1989) evapotranspiration algorithm and the agricultural model STICS (Brisson et al, 1998). Then the modelling approach consisted in adapting the SWMS_3D model (Simunek et al, 1995), that simulates the water flow and solute transport in three dimension): It was necessary to introduce a second uptake algorithm (grass cover), and the kinetic reaction equation linked to nitrate transformations were modified. The field and model results show that the grass cover technique reduces nitrate leachate five times. This reduction is the consequence of a water drainage decrease by 30% and of a nitrates concentration decrease in water soil solution under grass cover. The grass cover also influences the rainfall redistribution in soil, which could cause some water stress to vine., La nappe alluviale d'Alsace voit la qualité de son eau se dégrader, notamment du fait de l'accroissement des concentrations en nitrates. Cette pollution provient en partie du vignoble situé en zone de piémont des Vosges, zone privilégiée de recharge de la nappe. Le projet Enherbement du Vignoble Alsacien (EVA) a pour principal objectif d'évaluer quantitativement et qualitativement l'impact d'une technique agri-environnementale qui consiste à enherber de façon maîtrisée un inter rang non cultivé sur deux de vigne. Pour répondre à cette question, une approche de terrain et une démarche de modélisation mécaniste ont été associées dans le cadre de cette thèse. Deux parcelles, l'une témoin, l'autre expérimentale, situées à Rouffach (Haut-Rhin, France) ont été instrumentées et suivies de mai 1998 à octobre 2000, pour évaluer les principaux termes des bilans hydriques et azotés. Afin de compléter cette approche, les termes d'évapotranspiration et de prélèvement azoté des différents couverts ont été obtenus par simulation par le modèle de Riou et al (1989) et par paramétrage pour la culture de la vigne du logiciel STICS (Brisson et al, 1998), modèle agro-environnemental. Ceci a permis de comparer une parcelle désherbée chimiquement et une parcelle enherbée un inter rang sur deux, toute chose étant égale par ailleurs. L'approche par modélisation a consisté en l'adaptation du modèle SWMS_3D (Simunek et al, 1995, simulant les transferts d'eau et de soluté dans la zone non saturée) en intégrant le deuxième couvert herbacé ainsi que les cinétiques de réactions liées au nitrate. Les résultats expérimentaux et la modélisation montrent que la pratique de l'enherbement diminue de 80% le lessivage des nitrates. Cette réduction est liée à la baisse de 30% des quantités d'eau naturellement drainées et d'une diminution de la concentration en nitrates sous parcelle enherbée un rang sur deux. Nous soulignons que la présence du couvert herbacé influe sur la redistribution des précipitations, ce qui peut générer des risques de stress hydrique pour la vigne.

Abstract

In a great number of scientific articles on water quality improvement using constructed wetlands (CW) and riparian buffers zones (RBZ) at catchment scale, contradictory results are found. In most cases this is due to underestimating or even ignoring the role of the hydrological factor for water quality improvement. It has often resulted in biased estimates of buffering systems’ efficiency at catchment scale and, consequently, has caused planning and establishment failures, mistakes and inconsistencies in legislative acts and finally, it has influenced stakeholder’s willingness to support these eco-technological measures. In this paper we present a short but critical overview of the potential of CWs and RBZs in water quality improvement at catchment scale and highlight the most important aspects to be considered when planning, establishing and managing these systems. 8. Carbon availability limits potential denitrification in watercress farm sediment

Abstract

Abstract: Wetlands are widely used to improve water quality, in particular for removal of nutrients such as nitrates. Watercress farms are artificial wetlands that could potentially reduce transfers of nitrate to rivers; however, little is known about denitrification occurring in these particular wetlands. Watercress farming is a declining activity, which could have effects on nitrate removal in these wetlands. Therefore, we investigated the potential for denitrification in sediments from cultivated and abandoned watercress farms using flow-through reactors in the laboratory. Nitrate reduction rates ranged from 1.03 to 7.51μmol NO3 − cm−3 day−1 (mean±SD: 3.2±2.1μmol NO3 − cm−3 day−1). In general, sediments downstream of watercress beds exhibited higher nitrate reduction rates and contained more organic carbon than upstream sediments. The highest potential nitrate reduction rates were reached by sediments from cultivated watercress beds. As carbon was hypothesized to be a key factor in controlling nitrate reduction rates, the effects of different carbon sources on these rates were investigated by adding carbon to the sediment. Carbon was added either as labile organic acids (acetate or a mixture of lactate, fumarate, and succinate) or in the form of site-specific macrophytes (watercress [Nasturtium officinale] and reed [Phragmites australis]). Nitrate reduction rates increased significantly upon supply of organic acids or macrophytes. The addition of watercress resulted in the highest potential nitrate reduction rates. This study shows that denitrification in watercress farms is carbon-limited and suggests that the abandonment of watercress farms, with declines in macrophyte production and shifting macrophyte dominance, is likely to decrease the ability of these wetlands to remove nitrate by denitrification. Nitrate removal in watercress farms could be improved by supplying easily available organic C or by management of the vegetation, in particular in the upstream part of the beds. Abstract

• Efficient denitrifying biocathodes in sediment from constructed wetland are reported. • Denitrification increased by 45% after 1 month of polarization at −0.5 V vs. SCE. • 16S rRNA gene sequencing of the biofilms and sediment are reported. • Genera Azoarcus and Pontibacter dominate the denitrifying cathodic mixed biofilms. To limit the nitrate contamination of ground and surface water, stimulation of denitrification by electrochemical approach is an innovative way to be explored. Two nitrate reducing bio-cathodes were developed under constant polarization (-0.5 V vs SCE) using sediments and water from a constructed wetland (Rampillon, Seine-et-Marne, France). The bio-cathodes responded to nitrate addition on chronoamperometry through an increase of the reductive current. The denitrification efficiency of the pilots increased by 47% compared to the negative controls without electrodes after polarization. 16S rRNA gene sequencing of the biofilms and sediments evidenced the significant and discriminating presence of the Azoarcus and Pontibacter genera in the biofilms from biocathodes active for nitrate reduction. Our study shows the possibility to promote the development of efficient Azoarcus -dominated biocathodes from freshwater sediment to enhance nitrate removal from surface waters.
