England's two largest raised peat bogs, Thorne Moors and Hatfield Moor near Doncaster, Yorkshire, England, support at least 6,000 species of plants and animals and contain a record of more than 5,000 years of human and natural history, yet England's chief nature conservation agency, English Nature, appears less than committed to their preservation. English Nature's predecessor, the Nature Conservancy Council, had the two peat bogs declared sites of special scientific interest (SSSI). However English Nature has proposed taking 5% of Thorne Moors and 35% of Hatfield Moor out of the SSSI.
