Recently, analysis of the optical counterpart AT2017gfo to the gravitational wave-detected neutron star merger GW170817 has suggested a promising resolution of a long-standing debate on neutron star mergers as a source of some of the heaviest elements. However, making quantitative progress in these areas requires an accounting of the uncertainties in different aspects of physics, which is input into simulations of merging compact objects and their associated phenomena, remarkably rapid neutron capture nucleosynthesis. We investigate the uncertainties from the nuclear inputs to rapid neutron capture nucleosynthesis calculations combining different theoretical nuclear mass models, spontaneous fission rates, and fission daughter product distributions on top of the experimental nuclear data. We report that such nuclear physics uncertainties typically generate at least one order of magnitude uncertainty in the nuclear heating, which leads to uncertainties in the bolometric luminosity and the inferred mass of r-process material from the kilonova light curve. The nuclear data team at Los Alamos National Laboratory has undertaken a campaign to construct new fission yield evaluation. Significant advances have been made on a number of fronts. Nuclear potential energy surfaces can now be generated with the newly developed MicMac code based off the Finite Range Liquid-Drop Model (FRLDM). This model can be incorporated into the Los Alamos de-excitation framework codes BeOH and CGMF to perform modeling of prompt, independent (IFY) and cumulative (CFY) fission yields that take into account prompt and beta-delayed neutrons and photons consistent with decay data. This is in stark contrast to what exists in evaluated nuclear data libraries today, where only a few incident energy points are used with limited physical insights and no consistency between IFY, CFY and decay data. The astrophysical process by which the heaviest elements are formed in the universe is known as the rapid neutron capture process, or r process, of nucleosynthesis. The r process is characterized by the neutron capture and β− decay of short-lived, neutron-rich atomic nuclei; in suitably extreme environments, nuclear fission can also play a major role in determining the ensuing nucleosynthesis. In this work, we present the application of our recently developed nucleosynthesis tracing framework to precisely quantify the impact that neutron-induced and β− -delayed fission processes have in r-process environments that produce fissioning nuclei. Rapid neutron capture or 'r-process' nucleosynthesis may be responsible for half the production of heavy elements above iron on the periodic table. Masses are one of the most important nuclear physics ingredients that go into calculations of r-process nucleosynthesis as they enter into the calculations of reaction rates, decay rates, branching ratios and Q-values. We explore the impact of uncertainties in three nuclear mass models on r-process abundances by performing global monte carlo simulations. We show that root-mean-square (rms) errors of current mass models are large so that current r-process predictions are insufficient in predicting features found in solar residuals and in r-process enhanced metal poor stars. We conclude that the reduction of global rms errors below 100 keV will allow for more robust r-process predictions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A pronounced spike at low energy in the strength function for magnetic radiation (LEMAR) is found by means of Shell Model calculations, which explains the experimentally observed enhancement of the dipole strength. LEMAR originates from statistical low-energy M1-transitions between many excited complex states. Re-coupling of the proton and neutron high-j orbitals generates the strong magnetic radiation. LEMAR is predicted for nuclides with A ≈ 132 participating in the r-process of element synthesis. It increases the reaction rates by a factor of 2.5. The spectral function of LEMAR follows Planck's Law. A power law for the size distribution of the B(M1) values is found. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
