The dynamics of hydration water (HW) in 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine (DMPE) was investigated by means of quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) and compared with those observed in 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC). The headgroup dynamics of DMPE was investigated using a mixture of tail-deuterated DMPE and D2O, and the QENS profiles were interpreted as consisting of three modes. The fast mode comprised the rotation of hydrogen atoms in –NH3+ and –CH2– groups in the headgroup of DMPE, the medium-speed mode comprised fluctuations in the entire DMPE molecule, and the slow mode comprised fluctuations in the membrane. These interpretations were confirmed using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The HW dynamics analysis was performed on a tail-deuterated DMPE and H2O mixture. The QENS profiles were analyzed in terms of three modes: (1) a slow mode, identified as loosely bound HW in the DMPC membrane; (2) a medium-speed mode similar to free HW in the DMPC membrane; and (3) a fast mode, identified as rotational motion. The relaxation time for the fast mode was approximately six times shorter than that of rotational water in DMPC, consistent with the results of terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. The activation energy of medium-speed HW in DMPE differed from that of free HW in DMPC, suggesting the presence of different hydration states or hydrogen-bonded networks around the phosphocholine and phosphoethanolamine headgroups. In times where research focuses on the use of organic polymers as a base for complex organic electronic applications and improving device efficiencies, degradation is still less intensively addressed in fundamental studies. Hence, advanced neutron scattering methods are applied to investigate a model system for organic electronics composed of the widely used conductive polymer blend poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) together with nanocellulose as flexible reinforcing template material. In particular, the impact of relative humidity (RH) on the nanostructure evolution is studied in detail. The implications are discussed from a device performance point of view and the changing nanostructure is correlated with macroscale physical properties such as conductivity. The first humidification (95% RH) leads to an irreversible decrease of conductivity. After the first humidification cycle, however, the conductivity can be reversibly regained when returning to low humidity values (5% RH), which is important for device manufacturing. The structure changes and lithium intercalation properties in the surface region of Li4Ti5O12 were investigated using epitaxial Li4Ti5O12(111) film model electrodes. The discharge–charge measurements, which were conducted with 1 mol/dm3 LiPF6-containing propylene carbonate, revealed that a 23.8 nm-thick film exhibited a small capacity of 115 mA h/g compared to the theoretical value of 175 mA h/g. In situ neutron reflectometry and ex situ x-ray diffractometry and reflectometry indicated that an irreversible phase change had occurred in the 10-nm surface region of Li4Ti5O12 during the initial reaction processes. The level of deterioration of the surface structure was significantly reduced by decreasing the LiPF6 concentration; in addition, side reactions of the cell components with the electrolyte species, and their products, may be associated with the deterioration of the Li4Ti5O12 surface. The surface reactions have a significant impact on the capacity of lithium intercalation in nano-sized Li4Ti5O12. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract: ISSP-NSE instrument previously installed at the C2-2 port of the guide hall of JRR-3M, the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAERI), was relocated to the C2-3-1 port at the end of the C2 cold guide and renamed as “iNSE”. The instrument is now equipped with a neutron velocity selector capable of changing the neutron wavelength in the range of 4– with the wavelength resolution from 10% to 20%. The scattering angle was extended up to . A new set of polarizer and analyzer consisting of the remanent supermirrors derives about 87% of polarized neutrons with the wavelength of . The neutron flux at the sample position was increased by a factor of 2 to 3. Abstract: Gold nanorods have been actively studied for new nanotechnological materials and industrial applications. It is well known that gold nanorods grow spontaneously in surfactant solutions, and a number of procedures for their preparation have been reported; however, the factors that determine the morphology have not been well understood. In this study, we observed the time series of the growth process of gold nanorods in gelled surfactant solutions by completely stopping the growth reaction. This growth process was compared to that in solution without gelation. The comparison indicates that the self-assembly of surfactant molecules affected the resulting shape, especially the short-axis length, of the nanorods. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments revealed that the gelled solutions form lamellar structures, whereas nongelled systems form spherical micelles. On the bases of these results, we present a model showing that the short-axis length of gold nanorods is affected by a decrease in the spontaneous curvature of the outer surfactant layer and/or an increase in the bending modulus of the surfactant membrane neighboring the gold surface. Abstract: We are developing a high-resolution small angle neutron scattering instrument for very cold neutrons (VCN). Our concept includes a magnetic lens for focusing of the beam at the detector plane. The lens consists of one permanent-magnet sextupole array rotating outside another stationary sextupole array, to focus a pulsed white beam of neutrons. Thus the instrument operates in time of flight mode. The prototype magnetic lens has a bore of 15mm diameter and length of 66mm, producing a magnetic field gradient oscillating from 1.5×104 to 5.9×104 T/m2, with frequency ≤25Hz. A torque-canceling magnet around the lens suppresses the torque of rotation from the outer array to 1/3. We have demonstrated the performance of the lens, over wavelength range from 30 to 48Å, on the PF2-VCN beam line at the Institut Laue-Langevin, France. The focused beam image was the same size as the source, without chromatic aberration, with focal length of 1.14m. We also studied the performance of this configuration for high-resolution SANS, in a compact geometry (just 5m long). The measurable q range of this system was 0.009Å−1≤q≤0.3Å−1 or 0.004Å−1≤q≤0.08Å−1 for sample to detector distances of 100 and 465mm, respectively. Here, we present the results of our lens characterization study along with the SANS results on a tri-block copolymer (F127 Pluronic) and on a stretched polymer blend (with the Shish-Kebab structure).
