Abstract

We report the result from a search for charged-current coherent pion production induced by muon neutrinos with a mean energy of 1.3 GeV. The data are collected with a fully active scintillator detector in the K2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. No evidence for coherent pion production is observed and an upper limit of $0.60 \times 10^{-2}$ is set on the cross section ratio of coherent pion production to the total charged-current interaction at 90% confidence level. This is the first experimental limit for coherent charged pion production in the energy region of a few GeV., 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Super-Kamiokande is the world's largest water Cherenkov detector, with net mass 50,000 tons. During the period April, 1996 to July, 2001, Super-Kamiokande I collected 1678 live-days of data, observing neutrinos from the Sun, Earth's atmosphere, and the K2K long-baseline neutrino beam with high efficiency. These data provided crucial information for our current understanding of neutrino oscillations, as well as setting stringent limits on nucleon decay. In this paper, we describe the detector in detail, including its site, configuration, data acquisition equipment, online and offline software, and calibration systems which were used during Super-Kamiokande I.

Abstract

The K2K experiment observes indications of neutrino oscillation: a reduction of $\nu_\mu$ flux together with a distortion of the energy spectrum. Fifty-six beam neutrino events are observed in Super-Kamiokande (SK), 250 km from the neutrino production point, with an expectation of $80.1^{+6.2}_{-5.4}$. Twenty-nine one ring $\mu$-like events are used to reconstruct the neutrino energy spectrum, which is better matched to the expected spectrum with neutrino oscillation than without. Abstract

A number of different fits to solar neutrino mixing and mass square difference were performed using 1496 days of Super-Kamiokande-I's solar neutrino data. These data select two allowed areas at large neutrino mixing when combined with either the solar $^8$B flux prediction of the standard solar model or the SNO interaction rate measurements. A global fit combining SK data with the solar neutrino interaction rates measured by Homestake, SNO, Gallex/GNO and SAGE prefers a single allowed area, the Large Mixing Angle solution, at the 98.9% confidence level. The mass square difference $\Delta m^2$ between the two mass eigenstates ranges from about 3 to $19\times10^{-5}$eV$^2$, while the mixing angle $\theta$ is in the range of $\tan^2\theta\approx$0.25--0.65., Comment: 10 Pages, 4 figures, submitted to Physics Letters B

Abstract

Solar neutrino measurements from 1258days of data from the Super-Kamiokande detector are presented. The measurements are based on recoil electrons in the energy range 5.0{endash}20.0MeV. The measured solar neutrino flux is 2.32{+-}0.03(stat){sup +0.08}{sub {minus}0.07}(syst){times}10{sup 6} cm{sup {minus}2}s{sup {minus}1} , which is 45.1{+-}0.5(stat ){sup +1.6}{sub {minus}1.4}(syst) % of that predicted by the BP2000 SSM. The day vs night flux asymmetry ({Phi}{sub n}{minus}{Phi}{sub d})/ {Phi}{sub average} is 0.033{+-}0.022(stat){sup +0.013}{sub {minus}0.012}(syst) . The recoil electron energy spectrum is consistent with no spectral distortion. For the hep neutrino flux, we set a 90% C.L.upper limit of 40{times}10{sup 3} cm{sup {minus}2}s{sup {minus}1} , which is 4.3times the BP2000 SSM prediction.

Abstract

We report the result of a search for neutrino oscillations using precise measurements of the recoil electron energy spectrum and zenith angle variations of the solar neutrino flux from 1258 days of neutrino-electron scattering data in Super-Kamiokande. The absence of significant zenith angle variation and spectrum distortion places strong constraints on neutrino mixing and mass difference in a flux-independent way. Abstract

The T2K neutrino experiment at J-PARC uses a set of near detectors to measure the properties of an unoscillated neutrino beam and neutrino interaction cross-sections. One of the sub-detectors of the near-detector complex, the side muon range detector (SMRD), is described in the paper. The detector is designed to help measure the neutrino energy spectrum, to identify background and to calibrate the other detectors. The active elements of the SMRD consist of 0.7 cm thick extruded scintillator slabs inserted into air gaps of the UA1 magnet yokes. The readout of each scintillator slab is provided through a single WLS fiber embedded into a serpentine shaped groove. Two Hamamatsu multi-pixel avalanche photodiodes (MPPC's) are coupled to both ends of the WLS fiber. This design allows us to achieve a high MIP detection efficiency of greater than 99%. A light yield of 25-50 p.e./MIP, a time resolution of about 1 ns and a spatial resolution along the slab better than 10 cm were obtained for the SMRD counters., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures; talk at TIPP09, March 12-17, Tsukuba, Japan; to be published in the conference proceedings

Abstract

The previously published atmospheric neutrino data did not distinguish whether muon neutrinos were oscillating into tau neutrinos or sterile neutrinos, as both hypotheses fit the data. Using data recorded in 1100 live-days of the Super-Kamiokande detector, we use three complementary data samples to study the difference in zenith angle distribution due to neutral currents and matter effects. We find no evidence favoring sterile neutrinos, and reject the hypothesis at the 99% confidence level. On the other hand, we find that oscillation between muon and tau neutrinos suffices to explain all the results in hand., Comment: 9 pages with 2 figures, submitted to PRL

Abstract

We carried out an experimental test of various characteristics of a water Cerenkov detector, especially the particle identification capability, using the 12-GeV proton synchrotron at KEK, Japan. The detector characteristics so far studied are well reproduced by the Monte Carlo simulation. Especially it is able to identify electrons and muons with mis-identification probabilities less than a few percent in the momentum range of 250–1000 MeV/c except the particle positions in the extreme edge of the detector volume. Based on the present results, the deficiency of μ-neutrinos in the atmospheric neutrinos is not an artifact caused by some peculiar detector characteristics.

Abstract

Data from the Kamiokande detector were used to study the atmospheric (v μ + v μ ) (v e + v e ) ratio in the multi-GeV energy range. The observed ratio of μ-like to e-like events relative to the calculated ratio, ( μ /e) data /( μ /e) MC = 0.57 -0.07 +0.08 ± 0.07, suggests that the atmospheric (v μ + v μ ) (v e + v e ) ratio is smaller than expected for these neutrino energies. Also studied was the zenith-angle dependence of the above ratio. Results of an analysis of neutrino oscillations are presented.

Abstract

In this paper we report on the measurement of the rate of inclusive $\pi^0$ production induced by charged-current neutrino interactions in a C$_8$H$_8$ target at a mean energy of 1.3 GeV in the K2K near detector. Out of a sample of 11,606 charged current neutrino interactions, we select 479 $\pi^0$ events with two reconstructed photons. We find that the cross section for the inclusive $\pi^0$ production relative to the charged-current quasi-elastic cross section is $$\frac{\sigma_{CC\pi^0}}{\sigma_{CCQE}}=0.426\pm0.032(stat.)\pm0.035(syst.)$$ The energy dependent cross section ratio is also measured. Abstract

We present a search for non-zero theta_{13} and deviations of sin^2 theta_{23} from 0.5 in the oscillations of atmospheric neutrino data from Super-Kamiokande -I, -II, and -III. No distortions of the neutrino flux consistent with non-zero theta_{13} are found and both neutrino mass hierarchy hypotheses are in agreement with the data. The data are best fit at Delta m^2 = 2.1 x 10^-3 eV^2, sin^2 theta_{13} = 0.0, and sin^2 theta_{23} =0.5. In the normal (inverted) hierarchy theta_{13} and Delta m^2 are constrained at the one-dimensional 90% C.L. to sin^2 theta_{13} < 0.04 (0.09) and 1.9 (1.7) x 10^-3 < Delta m^2 < 2.6 (2.7) x 10^-3 eV^2. Abstract

The atmospheric neutrino background for proton decay via p→e + π 0 in ring imaging water Cherenkov detectors is studied with an artificial accelerator neutrino beam for the first time. In total, 3.14 × 10 5 neutrino events corresponding to about 10 megaton-years of atmospheric neutrino interactions were collected by a 1000 ton water Cherenkov detector (KT). The KT charged-current single π 0 production data are well reproduced by simulation programs of neutrino and secondary hadronic interactions used in the Super-Kamiokande (SK) proton decay search. The obtained p→ e + π 0 background rate by the KT data for SK from the atmospheric neutrinos whose energies are below 3 GeV is 1.63 +0.42 -0.33 (stat) +0.45 -0.51 (syst)(megaton-year) -1 . This result is also relevant to possible future, megaton-scale water Cherenkov detectors.

Abstract

A search for the appearance of tau neutrinos from \mutau oscillations in the atmospheric neutrinos has been performed using 1489.2 days of atmospheric neutrino data from the Super-Kamiokande-I experiment. A best fit tau neutrino appearance signal of 138 $\pm$ 48 (stat.) $^{+15}_{-32}$ (sys.) events is obtained with an expectation of 78 $\pm$ 26 (sys.). Abstract

We report on the results of a three-flavor oscillation analysis using Super-Kamiokande~I atmospheric neutrino data, with the assumption of one mass scale dominance ($\Delta m_{12}^2$$=$0). No significant flux change due to matter effect, which occurs when neutrinos propagate inside the Earth for $\theta_{13}$$\neq$0, has been seen either in a multi-GeV $\nu_e$-rich sample or in a $\nu_\mu$-rich sample. Both normal and inverted mass hierarchy hypotheses are tested and both are consistent with observation. Using Super-Kamiokande data only, 2-dimensional 90 % confidence allowed regions are obtained: mixing angles are constrained to $\sin^2\theta_{13} < 0.14$ and $0.37 < \sin^2\theta_{23} < 0.65$ for the normal mass hierarchy. Weaker constraints, $\sin^2\theta_{13} < 0.27$ and $0.37 < \sin^2\theta_{23} < 0.69$, are obtained for the inverted mass hierarchy case., Comment: 7 figures, 3 tables

Abstract

We present a combined analysis of fully-contained, partially-contained and upward-going muon atmospheric neutrino data from a 1489 day exposure of the Super--Kamiokande detector. The data samples span roughly five decades in neutrino energy, from 100 MeV to 10 TeV. A detailed Monte Carlo comparison is described and presented. The data is fit to the Monte Carlo expectation, and is found to be consistent with neutrino oscillations of $\nu_\mu \leftrightarrow \nu_\tau$ with $\sin^22\theta > 0.92$ and $1.5\times 10^{-3} < \Delta m^2 < 3.4\times 10^{-3}{\rm eV}^2$ at 90% confidence level., Comment: 32 pages, 44 figures. Abstract

A new near detector for the K2K long baseline neutrino experiment, the SciBar, was constructed and started data taking to study neutrino interactions. In K2K, neutrino oscillation is studied by comparing the number of neutrino interactions and energy spectrum between near and far detectors. In order to study neutrino oscillations more precisely, it is necessary to improve the measurement of neutrino spectrum and interactions below 1 GeV, where the latest K2K results suggest maximum oscillation. For that purpose, SciBar is designed to be fully active with fine segmentation. We present the design and basic performance. All detector components have been working as expected. Also presented are the measurements of charged current interactions which are used in the latest K2K oscillation analysis

Abstract

We present a search for electron neutrino appearance from accelerator produced muon neutrinos in the K2K long baseline neutrino experiment. One candidate event is found in the data corresponding to an exposure of 4.8*10^19 protons on target. The expected background in the absence of neutrino oscillations is estimated to be 2.4+-0.6 events and is dominated by mis-identification of events from neutral current pi^0 production. We exclude the \nu_\mu to \nu_e oscillations at 90% C.L. for the effective mixing angle in 2-flavor approximation of sin^2(2theta_\mu_e) (~= 1/2 sin^2 2 th_13) > 0.15 at Delta m^2_\mu_e = 2.8*10^{-3} eV^2, the best fit value of the \nu_\mu disappearance analysis in K2K. The most stringent limit of sin^2(2theta_\mu_e) < 0.09 is obtained at Delta m^2_\mu_e = 6*10^{-3} eV^2., Comment: 5 pages with 2 figures embeded in two column revtex4 style. Abstract

A search for a non-zero neutrino magnetic moment has been conducted using 1496 live days of solar neutrino data from {\SK}. Specifically, we searched for distortions to the energy spectrum of recoil electrons arising from magnetic scattering due to a non-zero neutrino magnetic moment. In the absence of clear signal, we found $\mu_{\nu} \leq 3.6 \times 10^{-10}$ $\mu_{B}$ at 90% C.L. by fitting to the Super-Kamiokande day/night spectra. The fitting took into account the effect of neutrino oscillation on the shapes of energy spectra. With additional information from other solar neutrino and KamLAND experiments constraining the oscillation region, a limit of $\mu_{\nu} \leq 1.1 \times 10^{-10}$ $\mu_{B}$ at 90% C.L. was obtained., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Muon neutrino disappearance probability as a function of neutrino flight length L over neutrino energy E was studied. A dip in the L/E distribution was observed in the data, as predicted from the sinusoidal flavor transition probability of neutrino oscillation. Abstract

We present the results of indirect searches for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) with 1679.6 live days of data from the Super-Kamiokande detector using neutrino-induced upward through-going muons. The search is performed by looking for an excess of high energy muon neutrinos from WIMP annihilations in the Sun, the core of the Earth, and the Galactic Center, as compared to the number expected from the atmospheric neutrino background. No statistically significant excess was seen. We calculate flux limits in various angular cones around each of the above celestial objects. We obtain conservative model-independent upper limits on WIMP-nucleon cross-section as a function of WIMP mass and compare these results with the corresponding results from direct dark matter detection experiments., 10 pages, 14 figures, Submitted to Phys. Abstract

The east-west anisotropy, caused by the deflection of primary cosmic rays in the Earth's magnetic field, is observed for the first time in the flux of atmospheric neutrinos. Using a 45 kt-year exposure of the Super-Kamiokande detector, 552 e-like and 633 mu-like horizontally-going events are selected in the momentum range between 400 and 3000 MeV/c. Abstract

High-energy neutrinos could be emitted from the center of the Sun as annihilation products of heavy galactic dark-matter particles. We analyze neutrino events observed by the Kamiokande detector to search for such neutrinos. The observed upper limits on solar high-energy neutrinos from these data set limits on the mass and density of certain galactic dark matter. The particles analyzed are heavy Dirac neutrinos ({nu}{sub {ital D}}), heavy Majorana neutrinos ({nu}{sub {ital M}}), Higgsinos ({ital {tilde h}}), neutrinos ({tilde {nu}}) with three flavors, and photinos ({tilde {gamma}}) as the lightest supersymmetric particles. Excluded mass regions are obtained for each dark-matter candidate: 3 GeV{lt}{ital m}{sub {nu}{ital D}}{lt}100 GeV, 3 GeV{lt}{ital m}{sub n{tilde u}}{ital e}{lt}90 GeV, 3 GeV{lt}{ital m}{sub n}{tilde u}{mu}{lt}90 GeV, and 4 GeV{lt}{ital m}{sub n}{tilde u}{tau}{lt}90 GeV. No limits are obtained on the masses of {nu}{sub {ital M}}, {ital {tilde h}}, and {tilde {gamma}} yet.

Abstract

Searches for possible day-night and semiannual variations of the {sup 8}B solar neutrino flux are reported based on 1040 days of Kamiokande-II data. Within statistical error, no such short-time variations were observed. The limit on the day-night difference sets a constraint on neutrino-oscillation parameters. A region defined by sin{sup 2}2{theta}{gt}0.02 and 2{times}10{sup {minus}6}{approx lt}{Delta}{ital m}{sup 2}{approx lt}10{sup {minus}5} eV{sup 2} is excluded at 90% C.L. without any assumption on the absolute value of the expected solar neutrino flux.

Abstract

An analysis of the Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein effect using 1040 days of Kamiokande-II data is reported, which provides constraints on neutrino-oscillation parameters. The measured recoil-electron energy spectrum alone leads to the conclusion that the adiabatic region, 7.2{times}10{sup {minus}4}{lt}sin{sup 2}2{theta}{lt}6.3{times}10{sup {minus}3}, {Delta}{ital m}{sup 2}{similar to}1.3{times}10{sup {minus}4} (eV){sup 2}, is disfavored at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract

A data sample of 1040 days from the Kamiokande II detector, consisting of subsamples of 450 days at electron-energy threshold ${\mathit{E}}_{\mathit{e}}$\ensuremath{\ge}9.3 MeV and 590 days at ${\mathit{E}}_{\mathit{e}}$\ensuremath{\ge}7.5 MeV, yields a clear directional correlation of the solar-neutrino-induced electron events with respect to the Sun and a measurement of the differential electron-energy distribution. These provide unequivocal evidence for the production of $^{8}\mathrm{B}$ by fusion in the Sun. The measured flux of $^{8}\mathrm{B}$ solar neutrinos from the two subsamples relative to a prediction of the standard solar model is 0.46\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05(stat)\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.06(syst). The total data sample is tested for short-term time variation; within the statistical error, no significant variation is observed.

Abstract

The weak nucleon axial-vector form factor for quasielastic interactions is determined using neutrino interaction data from the K2K Scintillating Fiber detector in the neutrino beam at KEK. More than 12 000 events are analyzed, of which half are charged-current quasielastic interactions ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}n\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}p$ occurring primarily in oxygen nuclei. We use a relativistic Fermi gas model for oxygen and assume the form factor is approximately a dipole with one parameter, the axial-vector mass ${M}_{A}$, and fit to the shape of the distribution of the square of the momentum transfer from the nucleon to the nucleus. Our best fit result for ${M}_{A}=1.20\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.12\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{GeV}$. Furthermore, this analysis includes updated vector form factors from recent electron scattering experiments and a discussion of the effects of the nucleon momentum on the shape of the fitted distributions.

Abstract

We report the results for nucleon decay searches via modes favored by supersymmetric grand unified models in Super-Kamiokande. Using 1489 days of full Super-Kamiokande-I data, we searched for $p \to \bar{\nu} K^+$, $n \to \bar{\nu} K^0$, $p \to \mu^+ K^0$ and $p \to e^+ K^0$ modes. We found no evidence for nucleon decay in any of these modes. We set lower limits of partial nucleon lifetime 2.3$\times10^{33}$, 1.3$\times10^{32}$, 1.3$\times10^{33}$ and 1.0$\times10^{33}$ years at 90% confidence level for $p \to \bar{\nu} K^+$, $n \to \bar{\nu} K^0$, $p \to \mu^+ K^0$ and $p \to e^+ K^0$ modes, respectively. These results give a strong constraint on supersymmetric grand unification models., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

Neutrinos from the decay of /sup 8/B in the Sun have been observed in the Kamiokande-II detector. Based on 450 days of data in the time period January 1987 through May 1988; the measured flux obtained from data with /ital E//sub /ital e///ge/9.3 MeV is 0.46/plus minus/0.13(stat)/plus minus/0.08(sys) of the value predicted by the standard solar model. Within experimental errors, the Kamiokande-II value is in agreement with the corresponding value obtained in the /sup 37/Cl radiochemical detector in essentially the same time period.

Abstract

Upward-going muons produced in the surrounding rock by high-energy neutrinos from astronomical objects have been searched for using the large underground water Cherenkov detector, Kamiokande. During a total of 1255 days observation, no significant signal was observed from the direction of eight astronomical objects. The 90%-confidence-level (-C.L.) upper limits on upward-going muon fluxes with energy greater than 1.7 GeV are 9.9\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}14}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}2}$${\mathrm{s}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ for Cygnus X-3 and 2.6\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}14}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}2}$${\mathrm{s}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ for LMC X-4. Our observed upward-going muon flux is compared with the calculation of the upward-going muon flux produced by the atmospheric neutrinos to examine the neutrino-oscillation hypothesis. The experimental average upward-going muon flux with energy greater than 1.7 GeV, (2.05\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.18)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}13}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}2}$${\mathrm{s}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$${\mathrm{sr}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$, is consistent with the theoretical expectation. If ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}$\ensuremath{\leftrightarrows}${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}}$ vacuum oscillations and large mixing angle are assumed, \ensuremath{\Delta}${m}^{2}$\ensuremath{\gtrsim}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}2}$ ${\mathrm{eV}}^{2}$ is newly rejected. The 90%-C.L. upper limit on the \ensuremath{\Delta}${m}^{2}$ for the maximum mixing is found to be \ensuremath{\Delta}${m}^{2}$=0.03 ${\mathrm{eV}}^{2}$ and \ensuremath{\Delta}${m}^{2}$=0.0055 ${\mathrm{eV}}^{2}$, depending on assumptions.

Abstract

We report the result of a search in the Kamiokande II detector for the interactions of electron-type antineutrinos in the energy interval 19 to 35 MeV. We measure directly a 90%-confidence-level upper limit of 226 cm/sup -2/ sec/sup -1/ on the flux of electron antineutrinos with energies in that interval. An upper limit on the total flux of relic antineutrinos from past supernovae is obtained as a function of the effective equilibrium temperature of the relic antineutrino sea.
