Seawater contains radionuclides at environmental levels; some are naturally present and others come from anthropogenic nuclear activity. In this report, the molecular speciation in seawater of uranium(VI) and neptunium(V) at a concentration of 5 × 10(-5) M has been investigated for the first time using a combination of two spectroscopic techniques: Time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence (TRLIF) for U and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) for U and Np at the LIII edge. In parallel, the theoretical speciation of uranium and neptunium in seawater at the same concentration is also discussed and compared to spectroscopic data. The uranium complex was identified as the neutral carbonato calcic complex UO2(CO3)3Ca2, which has been previously described in other natural systems. In the case of neptunium, the complex identified is mainly a carbonato complex whose exact stoichiometry is more difficult to assess. The knowledge of the actinide molecular speciation and reactivity in seawater is of fundamental interest in the particular case of uranium recovery and more generally regarding the actinide life cycle within the biosphere in the case of accidental release. This is the first report of actinide direct speciation in seawater medium that can complement inventory data.

Direct determination of the stability constants of some pentavalent actinides (Np and Pu) with carbonate ligands was investigated by CE-ICP-sector field MS (SFMS). The high sensitivity of ICP-SFMS coupled with the high separation power of CE makes it possible to determine the mobility of each species as well as the stability constants with good accuracy. A procedure for preparing pentavalent plutonium at trace level has been successfully tested enabling the study of Pu(V) complexation by CE-ICP-SFMS. Stability constants beta1, beta2 and beta3 have been obtained at 25 +/- 1 degrees C at a constant ionic strength of 0.37 M in NaClO4 for K1 and NaCl for beta2 and beta3. The results were extrapolated to zero ionic strength and compared with data available in the literature for Np(V). The following stability constants were obtained for a Pu(V)/CO3 system: logbeta(1)(0) = 4.95 +/- 0.10, logbeta(2)(0) = 6.34 +/- 0.10, and logbeta(3)(0) = 5.61 +/- 0.16.

Although of major impact in terms of biological and environmental hazards, interactions of actinide cations with biological molecules are only partially understood. Human serum transferrin (Tf) is one of the major iron carriers in charge of iron regulation in the cell cycle and consequently contamination by actinide cations is a critical issue of nuclear toxicology. Combined X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and near infrared absorption spectrometry were used to characterize a new complex between Tf and Np (IV) with the synergistic nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) anion. Description of the neptunium polyhedron within the iron coordination site is given.

A spectroelectrochemical setup has been developed to investigate radioactive elements in small volumes (0.7 to 2 ml) under oxidation–reduction (redox) controlled conditions by X‐ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The cell design is presented together with in situ XAS measurements performed during neptunium redox reactions. Cycling experiments on the NpO22+/NpO2+ redox couple were applied to qualify the cell electrodynamics using XANES measurements and its ability to probe modifications in the neptunyl hydration shell in a 1 mol l−1 HNO3 solution. The XAS results are in agreement with previous structural studies and the NpO22+/NpO2+ standard potential, determined using Nernst methods, is consistent with measurements based on other techniques. Subsequently, the NpO2+, NpO22+ and Np4+ ion structures in solution were stabilized and measured using EXAFS. The resulting fit parameters are again compared with other results from the literature and with theoretical models in order to evaluate how this spectroelectrochemistry experiment succeeds or fails to stabilize the oxidation states of actinides. The experiment succeeded in: (i) implementing a robust and safe XAS device to investigate unstable radioactive species, (ii) evaluate in a reproducible manner the NpO22+/NpO2+ standard potential under dilute conditions and (iii) clarify mechanistic aspects of the actinyl hydration sphere in solution. In contrast, a detailed comparison of EXAFS fit parameters shows that this method is less appropriate than the majority of the previously reported chemical methods for the stabilization of the Np4+ ion. The MARS beamline at the SOLEIL synchrotron is dedicated to the characterization of radioactive material samples. One great advantage of the beamline is the possibility to characterize about 380 radionuclides by different X-ray techniques in the same place. This facility is unique in Europe. A wide energy range from around 3.5 keV to 36 keV K-edges from K to Cs, and L3 edges from Cd to Am and beyond can be used. The MARS beamline is optimized for X-ray absorption spectroscopy techniques (XANES/EXAFS), powder diffraction (XRD) but x-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis, High Energy Resolution Fluorescence Detected -XAS (HERFD-XAS), X-ray Emission (XES) and μ-XAS/XRD are also possible. A description of the beamline as well as its performances are given in a first part. Then some scientific examples of XAS studies from users are presented which cover a wide variety of topics in radiochemistry and nuclear materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although transition metal cyano bimetallic compounds have been well known for decades for their interesting optical and magnetic properties, reports on actinide hexacyanoferrate compounds are scarce. For instance, a thorough structural description is still lacking. Another question is the possible covalency or charge transfer effects in these materials that are known to foster electron delocalization with a large variety of transition metal cations. In this paper, new members of the actinide(iv) hexacyanoferrates have been synthesized with Th, Np and Pu. This is the first review of thorium to plutonium hexacyanoferrate compounds since the early investigations during the Manhattan Project some 70 years ago. We have carried out an extensive structural characterization using powder X-ray Diffraction (XRD), X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray microscopy for the plutonium adduct. The crystallographic space group of microcrystalline Th, Np and Pu hexacyanoferrate compounds appears to be very similar to that of the early lanthanide adducts, suggesting that the tetravalent actinides are arranged in a tricapped trigonal prismatic polyhedron of coordination number 9, in which the actinide atom is bonded to six nitrogen atoms and to three water molecules. Further combined analysis of the iron K-edge and actinide LIII-edge EXAFS data and XRD data provided the basis for a three-dimensional molecular model. Structural data in terms of actinide–ligand bond lengths have been compared to those reported for the parent lanthanide(iii) compounds, confirming the structural similarities. In addition, two new structures with the thorium cation have been obtained and described using single-crystal XRD: (H5O2)[Th(DMF)5(H2O)]2[Fe(CN)6]3 and [Th(DMF)4(H2O)3][Fe(CN)6](NO3)·2H2O. This structural description of the Th, Np and Pu hexacyanoferrate system will be followed by a semi-quantitative electronic description of the actinide–cyano bond using NEXAFS data analysis in a coming paper. Abstract: Ultrasonic irradiation with the frequency of 20–22 kHz and absorbed acoustic power about 0.4 W ml–1 causes degradation of An(IV) tetrakis-β-diketonates, AnL4, where An(IV) is Th(IV), Np(IV), and Pu(IV), and HL is hexafluoroacetylacetone (HFAA) and dibenzoylmethane (HDBM), in hexadecane solutions in the presence of argon. The rate of the sonochemical process corresponds to a first-order kinetic law with respect to metal β-diketonate concentrations. The first-order rate constant of sonolysis increases with the increase in the volatility of the metal complexes. Solid sonication products consisted of a mixture of actinide carbides and partial degradation products, PDP, of initial metal β-diketonates. It is assumed that metal carbides are formed within the cavitating bubbles as a result of high-temperature process with participation of actinide(IV) β-diketonates and solvent vapours. Abstract: Visible/NIR spectrophotometry, solid-state NMR and spectroscopy reveal the hydrolysis of the PF6 − anion in the room-temperature ionic liquid [BuMeIm]PF6, where BuMeIm+ is 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium, in the presence of water and AnCl6 2−, where An(IV) is Th(IV), Np(IV), and Pu(IV). Slow absorption spectra evolution of AnCl6 2− solutions is finished by solid products'' precipitation. Solids are attributed to the mixture of An(IV) phosphates and fluorophosphates. A new mixed valent neptunium compound [BuMeIm]5[Np(NpO2)3(H2O)6Cl12] was synthesized by evaporation of an ethyl acetate-acetone mixture where the salt [BuMeIm]2[NpCl6] was dissolved. The crystal structure was determined using single crystal X-ray diffraction; it consists of four crystallographically unique Np centers with two different coordination environments in two different oxidation states. In addition, five crystallographically independent dialkylimidazolium cations stabilize the crystal through C-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds. [Np(NpO2)3(H2O)6Cl12] unit presents a highly symmetric structure with the formation of three Np(IV)-Np(V)O2+ bonds. According to the crystal structure and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the stability of the three Np4+-NpO2+ interactions is due to the presence of chloride ions around NpO2+ which brings electronic charge into the system and also to the presence of water molecules which create hydrogen bond with chloride ions.
