With the improvement in survival of patients with tumors, and continuous advancement of diagnostic technology and treatment modalities, instances of multiple primary malignancies (MPMs) are becoming an increasingly common phenomenon. The occurrence of esophageal-relevant MPMs increases the difficulty of diagnosis and treatment, and the overall prognosis is poor. Esophageal cancer related-MPMs tend to occur in areas such as the head, neck, stomach, and lungs. “Field cancerization” is one theoretical basis for the disease, and chemoradiotherapy, environmental life factors, and gene polymorphism are etiological factors. However, the influence of new therapeutic methods on MPM is still unclear, and the relationship between gene polymorphism and MPMs related to esophageal cancer needs further elucidation. Additionally, there is a lack of unified standards for diagnosis and treatment. Therefore, this study aimed to review the causes, clinical features, and prognostic factors of MPMs related to esophageal cancer.

Background: Long noncoding RNAs have been demonstrated to play important roles in different kinds of human malignancy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic value of long intergenic non-protein coding RNA 1232 (LINC01232) in patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PAAD) and further explore the clinical significance of the potential miRNAs that might be sponged by LINC01232. Methods: The potential target miRNAs that might be sponged by LINC01232 were analyzed using bioinformatics analysis. The Real-Time quantitative PCR was adopted to measure the relative expression of LINC01232 and target miRNAs in PAAD serum and tissue samples. The diagnostic and prognostic value of LINC01232 was evaluated using the receiver operating characteristic analysis and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, respectively. Results: LINC01232 expression was upregulated in PAAD serum and tissues and associated with patients’ TNM stage. Serum LINC01232 expression had diagnostic value, and the high levels of LINC01232 could predict unfavorable prognosis in PAAD patients. miR-204-5p, miR-370-5p and miR-654-3p were proposed as 3 targets of LINC01232 in PAAD, and their decreased expression levels in PAAD patients showed certain clinical significance in diagnosis and prognosis. Conclusion: The data of this study revealed that LINC01232 expression is upregulated in PAAD serum and tissue samples with considerable diagnostic and prognostic significance. In addition, miR-204-5p, miR-370-5p and miR-654-3p may be sponged by LINC01232 in PAAD, which also show potencies in PAAD diagnosis and prognosis.

Background: Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) hold huge potential for both clinical applications and basic research into the management of cancer, but the relationship between CTC count and cervical cancer prognosis remains unclear. Therefore, research on this topic is urgently required. Objective: This study investigated whether CTCs were detectable in patients with cervical cancer and whether CTC count was an indicator of prognosis. Methods: We enrolled 107 patients with pathologically confirmed cervical cancer. CTCs were detected after radiotherapy or concurrent cisplatin-containing chemotherapy in all patients. We evaluated all medical records and imaging data as well as follow-up information to calculate progression-free survival (PFS). PFS was defined as the time until first diagnosis of tumor progression or death. We also analyzed the relationship between CTC count and patient age, disease stage, histological differentiation, tumor size, and pathological type. Results: CTCs were identified in 86 of 107 patients (80%), and the CTC count ranged from 0 to 27 cells in 3.2 mL blood. The median progression-free survival (PFS) was 43.1 months. Patients in which CTCs were detected had a significantly shorter PFS than CTC-negative patients (P = 0.018). Multivariate analysis indicated that CTC count was an independent negative prognostic factor for survival. However, no correlation was observed between CTC count and patient age, disease stage, histological differentiation, tumor size, and pathological type. Conclusion: CTC count is an independent negative prognostic factor for cervical cancer.
