Fekalno onečišćenje važan je ekološki problem priobalnih područja koji utječe na ekosustav i ugrožava ljudsko zdravlje. Akumulacija i postojanost fekalnoga onečišćenja istraženi su u vodenom stupcu i sedimentu tri rovinjske uvale izložene različitim vrstama i količinama otpadnih voda. Razina fekalnog onečišćenja kvantificirana je pomoću bakterijskih indikatora i fekalnih sterola. Raspodjela otpadnih voda oko glavnog kanalizacijskog ispusta u uvali Cuvi ovisila je o udaljenosti od ispusta, volumenu ispuštenih voda, trenutnom strujanju i prisutnosti termokline. Bakterijski indikatori i fekalni steroli bili su značajno korelirani iako se njihov odnos mijenjao sezonski. Fekalna kontaminacija je registrirana u radiusu od 300 m oko ispusta. Sezonske promjene brojnosti heterotrofnih bakterija i produkcije bile su vrlo slične kao i na neonečišćenom području, uz blago povećanje brojnosti i brzine dijeljenja na ispustu. U uvali Valdibora izloženoj utjecaju ispusta tvornice za preradu ribe, unatoč deset puta manjem volumenu u odnosu na ispust u uvali Cuvi razine onečišćenja bile su usporedive. Brojnost heterotrofnih bakterija je bila najveća oko industrijskog ispusta, dok je brzina dijeljenja bakterijskih stanica bila izrazito niska. Granulometrijski sastav površinskih sedimenata (0-5 cm) bio je izmijenjen u odnosu na dublje sedimente (5-10 cm) u krugu od 300 m oko glavnog kanalizacijskog ispusta. U blizini ispusta koprostanol je najvećim dijelom bio vezan za frakciju vrlo sitnog pijeska. Otpadne vode iz tvornice za preradu ribe stvorile su izražene anoksične uvjete u sedimentu koji su pogodovali dijagenetskom procesu nastanka koprostanola. U sedimentima južne luke, izloženim ispuštanju sa brodova i jahti razina fekalnog onečišćenja je bila niska. Fecal contamination represents an important problem for coastal areas that affects the ecosystem and poses a threat to human health. The accumulation and persistence of fecal pollution was analyzed in the sediments and waters along the coast of Rovinj from 3 bays exposed to different types and amounts of sewage effluents. The level of sewage contamination was quantified using fecal indicator bacteria and fecal sterols. The distribution of waste waters around the main sewage outfall in Cuvi bay depended on the distance from the outfall, the volume discharged, the momentary currents and the presence of the thermocline. Fecal indicator bacteria and sterols were strongly correlated but their relation changed from season to season. Fecal contamination was detected in a radius of 300 m from the outfall. Seasonal changes of the abundance and production of heterotrophic bacteria were very similar in the contaminated and uncontaminated areas with a limited increase in the abundance and production close to the outfall. In the bay of Valdibora, influenced by a fish cannery effluent around 10 times smaller than the outfall in Cuvi bay the levels of contamination were comparable. The abundance of heterotrophic bacteria was the largest around the industrial outfall, while the specific rate of replication was very low. The grainsize composition of surface sediment (0-5cm) was altered in comparison to the less contaminated deeper sediment (5-10 cm) in a radius of 300 m around the main sewage outfall. At the sewage disposal site, coprostanol was predominantly associated with very fine sand. The fish cannery effluent, created highly anoxic conditions in the sediment that favored the diagenetic formation of coprostanol. The sediments from the southern harbor, exposed only to boat and yacht effluents displayed very low levels of fecal contamination.

Kroz godinu dana obavljena je studija stanja okoliša u Pješčanoj uvali, naselju u blizini Pule u južnoj Istri. Pješčana uvala ima problem sa otpadnim vodama zbog naglog rasta i razvoja naselja koje je doveo do diskutabilnih zahvata u gradnji poput spajanja odvoda kišnice i kanalizacije u određenim kućama. Tokom jakih kiša je pritom moguće da se prihvatni kapacitet sustava odvodnje prepuni te da dođe do izljeva mješavine otpadnih i oborinskih voda u uvalu. Stoga su istraženi hidrografski i mikrobiološki parametri uvale. Od hidrografskih parametara istraženi su temperatura, salinitet, pH i saturacija vode kisikom. Od mikrobioloških parametara istražene su koncentracije fekalnih indikatora vrste Escherichia coli, fekalnih streptokoka i ukupnih koliforma te morsku autohtonu mikrobiološku zajednicu gdje su izmjerene koncentracije autotrofnih cijanobakterija i heterotrofnih prokariota i nanoflagelata. Istraživanja su pokazala sezonske oscilacije u sanitarnom stanju uvale. Moguće je pretpostaviti da je uzrok neuravnoteženi kišni režim na području i neadekvatna infrastruktura za prihvat i odvod oborinskih voda. Najviše povišene koncentracije fekalnih indikatora su registrirane za jesensko uzorkovanje, kada su oborine u južnoj Istri najobilnije. Osim za jesen također je za zimu i ljeto bila barem jedna postaja sa povišenim koncentracijama. Plaže za kupanje imale su najniže vrijednosti FI što znači da kupači nisu pri opasnosti. Morska mikrobiološka zajednica imala je povećanu heterotrofnu komponentu, koja je imala raspored u uvali poput fekalnih indikatora. Zaključak je da su se heterotrofi hranili organskom tvari koja je ušla u uvalu s fekalnim indikatorima. Međutim, autotrofna komponenta je pak pokazivala snižene koncentracije, vrlo vjerojatno jer autotrofnim organizmima smetaju promjene hidrografskih uvjeta uzrokovane unosom mješavine voda. Over the course of a year, a study of the state of the environment was carried out in Pješčana uvala, a settlement near Pula in southern Istria. Pješčana uvala has a problem with wastewater due to the rapid growth and development of the settlement, which has led to debatable interventions in construction, such as the connection of rainwater drains and sewage in certain houses. During heavy rains, it is possible for the reception capacity of the drainage system to overflow and for a mixture of waste and rainwater to flow into the bay. Therefore, the hydrographic and microbiological parameters of the bay were investigated. Of the hydrographic parameters, temperature, salinity, pH and water saturation with oxygen were investigated. Among the microbiological parameters, the concentrations of fecal indicators of Escherichia coli, fecal streptococci and total coliforms and marine autochthonous microbiological indicators were investigated, where the concentrations of autotrophic cyanobacteria and heterotrophic prokaryotes and nanoflagellates were measured. Research has shown seasonal oscillations in the sanitary condition of the bay. It is possible to assume that the cause is an unbalanced rain regime in the area and inadequate infrastructure for receiving and draining rainwater. The highest concentrations of fecal indicators were registered for autumn sampling, when the precipitation in southern Istria is the most abundant. Except for autumn, there was also at least one station with elevated concentrations for winter and summer. The bathing beaches had the lowest FI values, which means that bathers are not at risk. The marine microbiological community had an increased heterotrophic component, which was distributed in the bay like faecal indicators. It can be concluded that heterotrophs fed on organic matter that entered the value with fecal indicators. However, the autotrophic component showed reduced concentrations, most likely because autotrophic organisms interfere with the changes in hydrographic conditions caused by the intake of the water mixture.

Obalna staništa su zbog svoje produktivnosti, sekvestracije ugljika, raspršivanja energije valova, zaštite obale od erozije i kruženja nutrijenata priznata kao jedna od najvrjednijih ekosustava na Zemlji. Kako bi se utjecalo na smanjenje pritiska velikog stanovništva i turizma, te potaknulo investitore na odgovorno postupanje prema prirodi, doneseni su brojni zakonski i podzakonski akti kako bi se što bolje reguliralo to područje. Cilj ovog istraživanja bilo je procijeniti utjecaj ski-lifta i pripadajuće infrastrukture na stanje priobalnih zajednica tri godine nakon njegove uspostave i usporediti sa staništima koja su utvrđena prije izgradnje ski-lifta. Uvala Valovine otvorena je prema jugozapadu, ukupne površine oko 0,12 km² i dio je Natura 2000 područja nazvanog „Akvatorij zapadne Istre“. Biocenoze koje su utvrđene u infralitoralu su: Biocenoza sitnih površinskih pijesaka, Biocenoza zamuljenih pijesaka zaštićenih obala, Biocenoza infralitoralnih algi i Biocenoza naselja vrste Posidonia oceanica koja je zbog svoje rijetkosti u Sjevernom Jadranu, vrlo važna i značajna za cjelovitost ekosustava pulskog akvatorija. Za potrebe analize stanja pridnenih staništa u ovom radu u dva navrata korištena je metoda vizualnog cenzusa. Za vrijeme ronjenja unutar cjelovitog zahvata ski-lifta korištena je oprema za autonomno ronjenje i podvodni fotoaparat, te podvodni dron. Prikupljene su direktne informacije s terena o prisutnim staništima i vrstama koje su ondje zatečene. Sve vrste koje nije bilo moguće determinirati in situ, determinirane su u prostorima Fakulteta prirodnih znanosti u Puli uz pomoć ključeva za determinaciju vrsta. Rezultati su pokazali dva vrlo pozitivna učinka ski-lifta u uvali Valovine, od kojih je jedan uporaba infrastrukture ski-lifta kao umjetno stanište sesilnim organizmima, a drugi je onemogućeno sidrenje brodica čime je omogućen oporavak biocenoza u uvali Valovine. Negativan učinak ski-lifta je otpad koji je primijećen u većoj količini u užem obuhvatu ski-lifta. Uzevši u obzir sve navedeno, predlaže se nastavak provođenja monitoring oporavka staništa i praćenje biocenoze, flore i faune ovog područja. Coastal habitats are recognized as one of the most valuable ecosystems on Earth due to their productivity, carbon sequestration, wave energy dissipation, coastal erosion protection and nutrient cycling. In order to reduce the pressures large populations and tourism and to encourage investors to act responsibly towards nature, numerous laws and by-laws were adopted to improve the regulation of coastal area. The aim of this research was to assess the impact of the ski-lift and its associated infrastructure on the state of coastal communities three years after its establishment and to compare it with the habitats that were established before the construction of the ski-lift. Valovine Bay is open to the southwest, with a total area of about 0.12 km² and is part of a Natura 2000 area called "Aquatoria of Western Istria". The biocenoses that have been established in the infralittoral are: Biocenose of fine surface sands, Biocenose of silty sands of protected shores, Biocenose of infralittoral algae and Biocenose of Posidonia oceanica, which, due to its rarity in the Northern Adriatic, is very important and significant for the integrity of the ecosystem of the Pula sea area. For the purpose of analyzing the state of habitats in this work, the visual census method was used on two occasions. During the diving within the complete ski-lift infrastructure, equipment for SCUBA diving, an underwater camera and an underwater drone were used. Direct information was collected from the field about the habitats present and the species found there. All species that could not be determined in situ were determined in the premises of the Faculty of Natural Sciences with the help of keys for species determination. The results showed two very positive effects of the ski-lift in Valovina bay, one of which is the use of the ski-lift infrastructure as an artificial habitat for sessile organisms, the second is the inability to anchor boats, thereby enabling the recovery of the biocenosis in Valovina bay. The negative effect of the ski-lift is the increased amount of waste in the narrower scope of the ski-lift. Considering all of the above, it is suggested to continue the monitoring of habitat recovery and monitor the biocenoses, flora and fauna of this area.

Područja estuarija od velikog su ekološkog, estetskog, ekonomskog i kulturološkog značaja te kao takvi spadaju među najproduktivnije i najdinamičnije ekosustave na Zemlji. Zbog specifičnih uvjeta kao što su miješanja vodenih masa različitog saliniteta i obilja hranjivih tvari prisutnih na tom području, estuariji se smatraju vrlo važnim staništima za mnoge vrste kopnenih i vodenih organizama što ih čini staništima s izrazito visokom biološkom raznolikošću. Primjer takvog područja nalazi se na zapadnoj obali Istre, poznato pod nazivom Limski zaljev. Unutrašnje područje Limskog zaljeva pod jakim je utjecajem vrulja što ga čini izrazito biološki produktivnim područjem. U ovom istraživanju pratili su se hidrografski parametri – temperatura, salinitet, pH vrijednost i saturacija kisikom i mikrobiološki pokazatelji poput brojnosti morske mikrobne zajednice, te je provedena sanitarna kontrola mora kroz četiri godišnja doba. Postavljena hipoteza o značajnom utjecaju vrulja na hidrografske parametre i brojnost mikrobne zajednice u površinskom dijelu zaljeva, te hipoteza da obalne vrulje u Limskom zaljevu predstavljaju potencijalni izvor fekalnih bakterija potvrđene su dobivenim rezultatima. Temeljem provedenog istraživanja može se zaključiti da u obalnom dijelu Limskog zaljeva dotok slatkih i hladnih voda putem vrulja dovodi do promjena hidrografskih uvjeta čime nastaju specifični uvjeti ekosustava koji su pogodni heterotrofnoj komponenti mikrobne zajednice. Uz to, povremena prisutnost većih koncentracija fekalnih indikatora u slatkoj vodi iz vrulja negativno utječe na sanitarnu kvalitetu mora u zaljevu. Potrebno je provoditi redovne sanitarne kontrole mora i precizno identificirati i sanirati izvore fekalnog onečišćenja u svrhu očuvanja od antorpogenog onečišćenja ovog posebnog rezervata u moru. Estuary areas are of great ecological, aesthetic, economic and cultural importance and as such are among the most productive and dynamic ecosystems on Earth. Due to specific conditions such as the mixing of water masses of different salinity and the abundance of nutrients present in the area, estuaries are considered very important habitats for many types of terrestrial and aquatic organisms, which makes them habitats with an extremely high biological diversity. An example of such an area is located on the west coast of Istria, known as the Lim Bay. The inner area of the Lim Bay is strongly influenced by underwater freshwater springs, which makes it an extremely biologically productive area. In this research, hydrographic parameters were monitored - temperature, salinity, pH value and oxygen saturation, and microbiological indicators such as the abundance of the marine microbial community, and sanitary control of the sea was carried out through four seasons. The hypothesis about the significant influence of underwater freshwater springs on hydrographic parameters and the abundance of the microbial community in the surface part of the bay, and the hypothesis that coastal underwater freshwater springs in the Lim Bay represent a potential source of fecal bacteria, were confirmed by the obtained results. Based on the conducted research, it can be concluded that in the coastal part of the Lim Bay, the inflow of fresh and cold water through underwater freshwater springs leads to changes in hydrographic conditions, which creates specific ecosystem conditions that are suitable for the heterotrophic component of the microbial community. In addition, the occasional presence of higher concentrations of fecal indicators in fresh water from underwater freshwater springs negatively affects the sanitary quality of the sea in the bay. It is necessary to carry out regular sanitary controls of the sea and precisely identify and remediate the sources of fecal pollution in order to protect this special reserve in the sea from anthropogenic pollution.

Istarski poluotok je zahvaljujući svojem reljefu i klimatskim uvjetima od davnina obilježen močvarnim područjima kao i stalnim i privremenim lokvama koje predstavljaju žarišta bioraznolikosti. Sediment močvara i lokvi predstavlja jedan od temeljnih staništa koji bilježi dugoročne uvijete i promjene u takvim sustavima. Stoga, proučavanje mikrobne zajednice u sedimentima, koja je najbrojnija komponenta bentosa lokvi, može doprinijeti boljoj interpretaciji ukupnog ekološkog stanja spomenutih vodenih tijela a uz kvantifikaciju fekalnih bakterija moguće je prepoznati i kvantificirati razinu određenih potencijalnih antropogenih pritisaka za ekosustave i predlaganje daljnjih mjera za zaštitu ovih područja. Istraživanje je provedeno kroz zimu i ljeto na šest različitih lokacija jugozapadne Istre. Brojnost heterotrofnih prokariota u sedimetima određena je pomoću epifluorescentntnog mikroskopa dok je sanitarna kvaliteta sedimenta odrađena metodom najvjerojatnijeg broja. Na temelju prikupljenih podataka može se zaključiti da je ekološko stanje analiziranih sedimenata umjerene kvalitete, pogotovo kod vodenih tijela u neposrednoj blizini ljudskih naselja. Dakle, potrebno je poduzeti odgovarajuće mjere kako bi se spriječio dodatni unos hranjivih soli, organske tvari ili zagađivala s prometnica, kako bi se stabilnost spomenutih vodenih tijela mogla dugoročno očuvati. Thanks to its landscape and climatic conditions, the Istrian peninsula has long been characterized by wetlands as well as permanent and temporary ponds that represent hotspots of biodiversity. The sediment of swamps and ponds represents one of the fundamental habitats which records long-term conditions and changes in such systems. Therefore, the study of the microbial community in sediments, which is the most numerous component of the benthos of ponds, can contribute to a better interpretation of the overall ecological state of the aforementioned water bodies, and with the quantification of fecal bacteria, it is possible to recognize and quantify the level of certain potential anthropogenic pressures on the ecosystems and propose further measures for the protection of these areas. The research was conducted during winter and summer at six different locations in southwestern Istria. The number of heterotrophic prokaryotes in the sediments was determined using an epifluorescence microscope, while the sanitary quality of the sediment was determined using the most probable number method. Based on the collected data, it can be concluded that the ecological condition of the analyzed sediments is of moderate quality, especially in water bodies in the immediate vicinity of human settlements. Thus, it is necessary to take appropriate measures to prevent the additional intake of nutrient salts, organic matter or pollutants from roads, so that the stability of the mentioned water bodies can be preserved in the long term.

Alohtoni rebraš Mnemiopsis leidyi je želatinozni, invazivni organizam koji se odnedavno redovito pojavljuje u sjevernom Jadranu. U europskim morima se prvi puta pojavio u Crnom moru gdje je unesen balastnim vodama iz Atlantika i gdje je ubrzo stekao reputaciju izrazito nepoželjnog morskog organizma. Naime, uslijed masovnih pojava rebraša istrijebljen je gotovo čitav fond zooplanktona, što je, na tom području u konačnici, dovelo do kolapsa ribarstva. Kako bi se ustanovila prostorno-vremenska dinamika populacije M. leidyi i kakve utjecaje ostvaruju na planktonsku zajednicu i inćune (kao predstavnike planktivorne ribe) u sjevernom Jadranu, analizirani su brojni kemijski, biološki i fizikalni parametri. Rezultati pokazuju da pojave ovog zooplanktonskog organizma uvelike ovise o geostrofičkim strujanjima, dok širenje i opstanak populacije značajno ograničava dostupnost hrane i temperatura mora. Pojave M. leidyi uz istočnu obalu vezuju se uz topliji dio godine i rezultat su sekundarnog širenja iz zimskih utočišta na zapadnom dijelu sjevernog Jadrana, dok su maksimumi brojnosti krajem ljeta povezani s povoljnim morskim strujanjima. Nadalje, M. leidyi istovremeno podržavaju niže i oslabljuju više trofičke razine organizama. Duga razdoblja visoke brojnosti M. leidyi dovode do akumulacije labilne organske tvari koja je pogodna za mikrobnu razgradnju, te ujedno i izvor hranjivih soli. Takav disbalans u sustavu utječe na rast brojnosti pikoplanktona i njihovih predatora, heterotrofnih nanoflagelata, čime se podržava mikrobna petlja, dok visoko-efikasna i neselektivna prehrana ovog rebraša, u sprezi s drugim pritiscima na riblji fond, mijenja prostorne obrasce populacije inćuna za vrijeme mrijesta, ali i zooplanktonsku zajednicu. Kako je u cilju sprječavanja posljedica pojava M. leidyi važno ograničiti širenje populacije rebraša, u posljednjem je dijelu ovog rada predložena prikladna obrada balastnih voda. Alien comb jelly Mnemiopsis leidyi is a gelatinous, invasive organism that is since recently is regularly appearing in the northern Adriatic. Its first appearance in the European seas was in the Black Sea, where it arrived in ballast tanks from the Atlantic and soon gained a reputation as a notorious marine invader. Large M. leidyi swarms depleted the entire zooplankton pool, leading to the collapse of fisheries. To depict the spatiotemporal dynamics of the M. leidyi populations and identify their impacts on the plankton community and anchovies (as representatives of planktivore fish) in the northern Adriatic, different chemical, biological and physical parameters were analysed. The results show that the appearance of this zooplankton organism is largely dependent on the geostrophic flow, while its spread and survival limit food availability and water column temperature. Occurrence along the eastern coast is associated with warmer seasons as a result of secondary dispersion from M. leidyi winter refuges in the northwest and maxima abundances in late summer with favourable sea currents. Moreover, M. leidyi simultaneously supports lower trophic levels while interfering with transport to the higher levels. Especially long high-abundance periods provide a large amount of organic matter, in most part labile and, thus, suitable for microbial digestion that, as follows, the release of nutrients. Furthermore, such an imbalance in the system leads to an increased abundance of picoplankton and their predator heterotrophic nanoflagellate, stimulating the microbial loop. Besides, a highly efficient and non-selective comb jelly diet, combined with other stressors on fish stocks, affects the spatial patterns of anchovy spawning areas and the zooplankton community. It is most important to limit M. leidyi spread to prevent adverse consequences; thus, ballast water treatments are proposed in the last part of this thesis.

Livade morskih cvjetnica su važni ekosustavi za mnoge druge vrste. U današnje vrijeme prijete im razni čimbenici poput invazivnih vrsta i antropogenog utjecaja. U svrhu izrade ovog rada praćene su tri lokacije na području zapadne Istre u 2020. godini, a to su: uvala Ribnjak, uvala Funtana i uvala Veštar. Na ovim lokacijama su ukupno pronađene četiri livade morskih cvjetnica. Flora na livadama se sastojala od vrsta Cymodocea nodosa i Zostera noltii, a uz cvjetnice su pronađene i određene alge. U uvali Funtana na livadi cvjetnice Cymodocea nodosa uočena je velika kolićina alge Caulerpa cylindracea koja se smatra invazivnom vrstom u Jadranskom moru. Ova se alga smatra invazivnom vrstom jer nije autohtona za naše područje te je otkriveno da je u kompeticijoi za prostor, svjetlost i nutrijente sa našim autohtonim vrstama te da ih polako potiskuje. Upravo ovo se događa sa livadom Cvjetnice Cymodocea nodosa u uvali Funtana koja je radi invazivne alge Caulerpa cylindracea prorijeđena. Osim invazivne vrste, prijetnju predstavljaju i antropogeni čimbenici poput izgradnje i nasipavanja obale, turizma, otpadnih voda itd. Seagrass meadows are important ecosystems for many other species. Nowadays, they are threatened by various factors such as invasive species and anthropogenic impact. For the purpose of preparing this paper, three locations in the area of ​​western Istria in 2020 were monitored, namely: Ribnjak Bay, Funtana Bay and Veštar Bay. A total of four seagrass meadows were found at these locations. The flora in the meadows consisted of the species Cymodocea nodosa and Zostera noltii, and certain algae were found along with the seagrass plants. In the bay of Funtana on the meadow of seagrass Cymodocea nodosa, a large amount of algae Caulerpa cylindracea was observed, which is considered an invasive species in the Adriatic Sea. This algae is considered an invasive species because it is not indigenous to our area and has been found to compete for the space, light and nutrients with our indigenous species and is slowly suppressing them. This is exactly what is happening with the Cymodocea nodosa meadow in Funtana Bay, which has been thinned due to the invasive algae Caulerpa cylindracea. In addition to the invasive species, anthropogenic factors such as coastal construction and embankment, tourism, wastewater, etc. are also a threat.

Na istarskom se poluotoku nalazi više od tisuću kraških lokvi i nekoliko močvara. Zajedno s četiri male rijeke i akumulacijskim bazenom, one čine jedine površinske slatke vode u regiji. Ta malena vodna tijela općenito su umjetna ili djelomično modificirana od strane ljudi koji su se na njih oslanjali kroz povijest, uglavnom za poljoprivredne i stočarske djelatnosti. Lokve i močvare u prošlosti su također predstavljale problem za ljudsko zdravlje pogodujući razmnožavanju komaraca i difuziji malarije te su stoga početkom 20. stoljeća masovno tretirane insekticidima ili umjetno povezane s morem. U današnje vrijeme lokve su često napuštene i sklone degradaciji zbog neodržavanja i rasta vegetacije. Štoviše, u njima se često nakupljaju poljoprivredne i urbane vode, a s time i mikrobiološka i kemijska onečišćenja. Površinska vodna tijela na području Sredozemlja ključna su za opstanak okolne kopnene flore i faune. Uz to, djeluju kao žarišta vodene biološke raznolikosti koja pružaju jedino utočište raznim endemskim vrstama i veoma su bitna za ptice selice koje imaju ključnu ulogu u umrežavanju ekosustava te se tako doprinosi očuvanju biološke raznolikosti južne Europe. Cilj ovoga istraživanja bio je ispitati karakteristike staništa, mikrobiološke i sanitarne uvjete te tragove anorganskih zagađivala u vodama pet lokvi i jedne bočate močvare na jugozapadnom dijelu istarskog poluotoka. Ovim su se istraživanjem pružili prvi podaci o statusu tih osjetljivih i dragocjenih okoliša, koji će biti temelj za provedbu njihovih budućih programa očuvanja i održivog upravljanja. There are more than a thousand karst ponds and several wetlands on the Istrian peninsula. Together with four small rivers and a reservoir, they form the only surface freshwater in the region. These small water bodies are generally artificial or partially modified by people who have relied on them throughout history, mainly for agricultural and livestock activities. Puddles and wetlands have also been a problem for human health in the past, favoring mosquito breeding and malaria diffusion, and were therefore massively treated with insecticides or artificially linked to the sea in the early 20th century. Nowadays, ponds are often abandoned and prone to degradation due to lack of maintenance and vegetation growth. Moreover, they often accumulate agricultural and urban water, and with it microbiological and chemical contaminants. Surface water bodies in the Mediterranean area are crucial for the survival of the surrounding terrestrial flora and fauna. In addition, they act as foci of aquatic biodiversity that provide the only refuge for various endemic species and are very important for migratory birds that play a key role in ecosystem networking and thus contribute to the conservation of southern European biodiversity. The aim of this study was to examine habitat characteristics, microbiological and sanitary conditions and traces of inorganic pollutants in the waters of five ponds and one brackish wetland in the southwestern part of the Istrian peninsula. This research provided the first data on the status of these sensitive and valuable environments, which will be the basis for the implementation of their future conservation and sustainable management programs.

U ovom istraživanju analizirane su određene komponente morske mikrobne zajednice zimi i ljeti, dviju uvala smještenih na južnoj strani istarskog poluotoka (Uvala Ribnjak i Luka Pomer) koje se intenzivno koriste za turističke aktivnosti. Na taj se način želio dobiti preliminarni uvid generalnog stanja mikrobne zajednice i utvrditi postoje li neki značajni izvori fekalnog onečišćenja na tim lokacijama. Rezultati su pokazali da istraženo područje ima izvrsnu kvalitetu mora i da je mikrobna zajednica imala povećane brojnosti na pojedinim lokacijama što upućuje na visok stu-panj produktivnosti, dijelom zbog prisutnosti morske cvjetnice Cymodocea nodosa, ali i uslijed ispiranja okolnog tla. In this research, certain components of the marine microbial community in winter and summer were analyzed, two bays located on the southern side of the Istrian peninsula (Ribnjak bay and Pomer harbor) which are intensively used for tourist activities. In this way, we wanted to get a preliminary insight into the general condition of the microbial community and determine whether there are any significant sources of fecal contamination in these locations. The results showed that the investigated area has excellent sea quality and that the microbial community had increased numbers in some locations, which indicates a high level of productivity, partly due to the presence of Cymodocea nodosa, but also due to leaching of the surrounding soil.

U ovom završnom radu su analizirani podaci dobiveni monitoringom rađenom u rujnu 2019.godine na šest postaja u usporedbi s podacima dobivenih s ortofoto snimki tih postaja iz 2011., 2014., te 2018. godine. Postaje na kojima se vršilo uzorkovanje i ronilački monitoring su uvala Cisterne (Rovinj), uvala Veštar (Rovinj), uvala Saline (Rovinj), uvala Faborso (Rovinj), Vrsarska luka te uvala Funtana. Na terenu se radilo uzorkovanje metodom probnih kvadrata. Na svakoj postaji su uzeta tri uzorka. Nakon uzorkovanja uzorci su obrađeni u laboratoriju, te su dobiveni biometrijski podaci o morskim cvjetnicama sa svih postaja. Biometrijski podaci podrazumijevaju prosječan broj listova po jedinici površine, prosječnu dužinu listova po jedinici površine, te prosječnu mokru i suhu masu listova po jedinici površine, kao i prosječnu mokru i suhu masu korijenja i rizoma po jedinici površine. Pomoću ortofoto snimka s Geoportala Državne geodetske uprave Republike Hrvatske je izračunata površina rasprostranjenosti livada u 2011., 2014., te 2018. godini. Ronilačkim monitoringom je određena površina rasprostranjenosti morskih cvjetnica u 2019. na svim postajama. Na svim postajama je pronađena cvjetnica vrste Cymodocea nodosa, a na postajama Veštar i Funtana i vrsta Zostera noltii. Na postaji Funtana je pronađena i invazivna alga vrste Caulerpa cylindracea. Stanje rasprostranjenosti i biometrije cvjetnica je bilo zabrinjavajuće na postajama Funtana, Vrsar, slijede postaje Veštar, Saline, te Faborso, a na postaji Cisterne stanje rasprostranjenosti i biometrije je bilo najbolje. In this bachelor thesis it has been made an analysis between the data obtained with ortophotography pictures from the years of 2011., 2014., and 2018. and with diving monitoring in September of 2019 on six sampling stations. The sampling stations include the following places in Rovinj: Cisterne bay, Veštar bay, Saline bay, faborso bay, then the port of Vrsar and Funtana bay. The sampling was done with the quadrat method. Three samples were taken at each station. After sampling, the samples were processed in the laboratory, and after that the biometric data were obtained. Biometric data include the average number of leaves per unit area, the average leaf length per unit area, the average wet and dry leaf mass per unit area, as well the average wet and dry roots and rhizome mass per unit area. Then by using the state Geodetic Administration Geoportal of Republic Croatia the area of meadow distribution is calculated for the years of 2011, 2014 and 2018. The area of meadow distribution in the year of 2019 is calculated by direct diving monitoring of the stations. The species Cymodocea nodosa was found on all the stations, and the species Zostera noltii was found in Veštar and Funtana bay. In the Funtana bay an invasive algae species, Caulerpa cylindracea was found. The condition of the distribution area and as well the biometric data was the worst in the stations of Funtana and Vrsar bay, the stations of Veštar, Saline and Faborso showed intermediate concern, and then the station of Cisterne bay was the least concerning in the term of biometric and distribution area stability.

U ovom je radu analizirano sanitarno i mikrobiološko stanje mora u luci Valbandon te salinitet i temperatura na šest lokacija unutar luke. Rezultati sanitarne kakvoće mora u zimskom periodu ukazali su na blago onečišćenje vjerojatno povezano sa unosom slatke vode koji dotječe u slanu močvaru umjetno nastalu u produžetku luke. Koncentracija indikatora (FK, FS, E.coli) sanitarne kakvoće mora upravo na području oborinskog kanala je blago povišena, no usprkos tome kvaliteta mora prema standardima za ocjenu kakvoće mora je ocijenjena kao izvrsna. S druge strane u ljetnom je periodu koncentracija indikatora bila generalno vrlo niska, s blagim povećanjem opet upravo uz oborinski kanal koji dovodi slatku vodu i čiji je donos s obzirom na puno veći salinitet u ljetnim mjesecima smanjen, pa se da zaključiti da je izvor blagog onečišćenja bio upravo dotok slatke vode. Omjer fekalnih koliforma i fekalnih streptokoka ukazuje na to da je na većini postaja fekalno onečišćenje ljudskog porijekla, što može biti povezano sa obližnjim kanalizacijskim ispustima, s ispiranjem tla okolnog naselja i kampa dok u ljetnom periodu su većinski životinjska fekalna onečišćenja. Brojnost mikrobne zajednice bila je na nekim lokacijama umjereno iznad normalnih granica ukazujući na viši stupanj eutrofnosti unutar luke i močvare. Heterotrofne bakterije imale su najvišu koncentraciju uz dotok slatke vode u oba perioda uzorkovanja zbog vjerojatnog dotoka organske tvari u slatkoj vodi koja im služi kao hrana, što onda dovodi i heterotrofne nanoflagelate do porasta brojnosti obzirom da se oni hrane heterotrofnim bakterijama. Generalno stanje istraženog područja može se karakterizirati kao dobro, no zbog blizine potencijalnih izvora onečišćenja, ograničene cirkulacije vode unutar luke i njene pličine postoji rizik o pogoršanju sanitarnog i mikrobiološkog stanja i zbog toga se predlaže redovito praćenje mikrobioloških parametara kako bi se očuvalo zdravlje korisnika luke, kupača i okoliša. In this paper, the sanitary and microbiological condition of the sea in the port of Valbandon is analyzed salinity and temperature at six locations within the port. The results of the sanitary quality of the sea in the winter period indicated mild pollution probably related to the intake of fresh water flowing into the artificially created salt marsh in the extension of the port. Concentration of indicators (FK, FS, E.coli) of sanitary quality of the sea precisely in the area of ​​the precipitation channel it is slightly elevated, but nevertheless the quality of the sea according to the standards for assessing the quality of the sea it was rated as excellent. On the other hand, in the summer the concentration of indicators was generally very low, with a slight increase again right next to the precipitation channel that brings in fresh water and whose yield given the much higher salinity in the summer months reduced, so it can be concluded that the source of mild pollution was precisely the inflow of fresh water. The ratio of fecal coliforms to fecal streptococci indicates that it is present at most stations fecal contamination of human origin, which may be related to nearby sewer drains, with soil leaching of the surrounding settlement and camp while in the summer are mostly animal fecal contaminants. The number of microbial communities was moderately above normal in some locations border indicating a higher degree of eutrophication within the port and wetland. Heterotrophic bacteria had the highest concentration with fresh water inflow in both sampling periods due to the probable influx of organic matter into the fresh water that serves them as food, which then leads to and heterotrophic nanoflagellates to an increase in numbers since they feed on heterotrophic bacteria. The general condition of the study area can be characterized as good, but due to the proximity potential sources of pollution, limited water circulation within the port and its shoals there is a risk of deterioration of the sanitary and microbiological condition and is therefore suggested regular monitoring of microbiological parameters in order to preserve the health of port users, bathers and the environment.

U radu je istraženo onečišćenje otpadnim vodama oko ispusta tvornice za preradu ribe u sjevernoj luci grada Rovinja, te su rezultati uspoređeni s prethodnim studijama. Otpadne vode sadrže izrazito visoke koncentracije fekalnih bakterija, pa se područje ne može smatrati sigurnim za kupanje i rekreaciju. Dio suspendiranog masnog partikulata koji pluta na površini putem vjetra može dospjeti i na druge lokacije te sa sobom nosi potencijalne patogene bakterije koje mogu ugroziti ljudsko zdravlje. Ugradnjom uređaja za pročišćavanje otpadnih voda tvornice za preradu ribe smanjile bi se količina masnoća i ostataka ribe u području oko ispusta tvornice. Poboljšala bi se sanitarna kakvoća mora i smanjio antropogeni učinak na ekosustav. Istraživanjem je dokazano kako bi se u kratkom roku poboljšala kvaliteta. Uz takav pozitivan učinak bonus bi bio i estetski izgled te smanjen neugodan miris koji dočeka svakog posjetitelja Rovinja. The paper investigates wastewater pollution around the outlet of a fish processing factory in the northern port of Rovinj, and compares the results with previous studies. Wastewater contains extremely high concentrations of fecal bacteria, so the area cannot be considered safe for swimming and recreation. Part of the suspended fatty particulate matter that floats on the surface through the wind can reach other locations and carry with it potential pathogenic bacteria that can endanger human health. The installation of a wastewater treatment plant for the fish processing plant would reduce the amount of fat and fish residues in the area around the factory outlet. The sanitary quality of the sea would be improved and the anthropogenic impact on the ecosystem would be reduced. Research has proven to improve quality in the short term. With such a positive effect, the bonus would be the aesthetic appearance and reduced unpleasant odor that greets every visitor to Rovinj.

Estuarij (lat. aestuarium, „nisko riječno ušće“) je naziv za riječno ušće oblikovano poput lijevka. Estuariji su rjeđi od ušća u obliku delte. Takav oblik ušća imaju na primjer rijeke: Temza, Laba, Ob, Jenisej. U Hrvatskoj prevladavaju jako stratificirani estuarij. To znači da površinski sloj niskog saliniteta je jasno odvojen od pridnenoga sloja visoka saliniteta. Primjeri takvih rijeka u Hrvatskoj su rijeke Krka i Zrmanja. Pritchard je 1967. godine prvi put definirao estuarije kao područja gdje slatkovodna riječna masa ima trajnu vezu sa morskom masom, unutar kojeg je voda mjerljivo slabijeg saliniteta. Estuarij su donji dijelovi riječnih dolina koji su izloženi utjecaju plime i oseke. Razlikuju se od plitkih uvala i zaljeva zbog izrazitog utjecaja slatke vode. Miješanje slatke i slane vode, te smanjeno strujanje na nekim mjestima u estuariju uzrokuju taloženje sedimenta: pijeska i mulja. Deponirani sedimenti mogu formirati deltu na ušću, primjer takve delte u Hrvatskoj ima rijeka Neretva. Podtip estuarija karakterističan za Hrvatsku jest tip estuarija krških rijeka koji je nastao nakon otapanja ledenjaka i dizanja morske razine nakon zadnjeg ledenoga doba. Estuary (lat. Aestuarium, "low estuary") is the name for a estuary shaped like a funnel. Estuaries are rarer than delta-shaped estuaries. Such forms of estuaries have, for example, the rivers: Thames, Elbe, Ob, Yenisei. Highly stratified estuaries predominate in Croatia. This means that the surface layer of low salinity is clearly separated from the bottom layer of high salinity. Examples of such rivers in Croatia are the Krka and Zrmanja rivers. In 1967, Pritchard first defined estuaries as areas where freshwater river mass has a permanent connection with sea mass, within which water is of measurably lower salinity. Estuaries are the lower parts of river valleys that are exposed to the influence of tides. They differ from shallow bays and coves due to the distinct influence of fresh water. Mixing fresh and salt water, and reduced flow in some places in the estuary cause sediment deposition: sand and silt. Deposited sediments can form a delta at the mouth, an example of such a delta in Croatia is the river Neretva. The subtype of estuaries characteristic of Croatia is the type of estuaries of karst rivers that formed after the melting of glaciers and rising sea levels after the last ice age.

Ekološka mreža Natura 2000 najveća je mreža zaštićenih područja u svijetu. Pravni okvir za njezino očuvanje sadržano je u Direktivi o pticama i Direktivi o staništima, koje provode sve države članice EU. Natura 2000 područja se dijele na Područja značajna za ptice (POP) i područja značajna za vrste i stanišne tipove (POVS). Ovim radom dan je uvid i pregled Natura 2000 područja u Istarskoj županiji temeljem analize podataka s Bioportala. Prikazane su sve ciljne vrste unutar ciljnih staništa te su sistematizirane prijetnje i pritisci. Dodatno, podaci Natura 2000 područja u Istri uspoređeni su s područjima Ekološke mreže na poluotoku Pelješcu u cilju komparacije njihovih Natura 2000 područja (POVS i POP). Podaci s Bioportala obrađeni su u programu Excel, gdje se radila usporedba postotne prostorne zastupljenosti tipova područja (POP i POVS), na dva najveća hrvatska poluotoka. Istra ima vrlo bogatu biološku raznolikost s izraženijim pritiscima i prijetnjama, u odnosu na Pelješac. The Natura 2000 ecological network is the largest network of protected areas in the world. The legal framework for its conservation is contained in the Birds Directive and the Habitats Directive, which are implemented by all EU Member States. Natura 2000 sites are divided into Areas of Importance for Birds (POP) and Areas of Importance for Species and Habitat Types (POVS). This paper provides an insight and overview of Natura 2000 sites in the County of Istria based on the analysis of data from the Bioportal. All target species within the target habitats are presented and threats and pressures are systematized. In addition, data from Natura 2000 sites in Istria were compared with the areas of the Ecological Network on the Pelješac Peninsula in order to compare their Natura 2000 sites (POVS and POP). Data from the Bioportal were processed in Excel, where a comparison of the percentage of spatial representation of area types (POP and POVS) was made on the two largest Croatian peninsulas. Istria has a very rich biological diversity with more pronounced pressures and threats, compared to Peljesac.

Estuariji naših krških rijeka zbog svog oblika i zbog toga što se nalaze u područjima malih morskih mijena imaju posebna oceanografska svojstva: stalnu stratificiranost vodenoga stupca zbog nagloga povećanja slanosti po dubini, potpovršinski temperaturni maksimum i vrlo dugo zadržavanje morske vode u estuariju. Tu su zato razvijene drugačije životne zajednice nego u okolnom moru. Živi svijet katkad je toliko bogat, a izmjena vode toliko spora da na nekim mjestima, čak i bez čovjekova utjecaja, može nestati otopljeni kisik u vodi, što će prouzročiti masovno ugibanje organizama. Važno je što potpunije opisati takva kompleksna područja s multidisciplinarnim pristupom (kemija, fizika i biologija) kako bi se što bolje shvatilo njihovo funkcioniranje, uzroci ugroženosti i predložile što efikasnije mjere zaštite. Neke od mjera zaštita su nadziranje kakvoće morske vode, ali i slatke vode koja u tom području ima znatan utjecaj; uspostavljanje sustavnog praćenja kvalitete različitih staništa, naročito ako dio područja služi marikulturi; potrebno je regulirati ribolov te uspostaviti zaštićena područja na mjestima gdje stanište još nije degradirano.
