Herein we report a room temperature Fe‐catalyzed coupling reaction of various bromophenols with aryl Grignard reagents, which exhibits a wide substrate scope and high functional group tolerance. For the first time, the combination of simple Fe(acac)3/PBu3/Ti(OEt)4 has been used as an effective catalyst for the biaryl couplings of bromophenols or their Na or K salts with debromination and etherification side reactions being well suppressed. Various biphenols including natural product garcibiphenyl C as well as pharmaceutical diflunisal and its ethyl ester were facilely synthesized using the present protocol. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An environmentallyfriendly one-pot synthesis of 2-arylbenzofurans under ambient temperature has been developed. It features an ortho-hydroxyl group assisted Wittig reaction of substituted salicylaldehyde followed by an in situ oxidative cyclization. Its advantages include readily available and non-hazardous materials, benign reaction conditions (room temperature, green solvent and one-pot manner), easy work-up and high overall yields. A novel and convenient two-step synthesis of 2-arylbenzofurans is described which proceeds via a selective cross-pinacol-type coupling between a salicylaldehyde and an aromatic aldehyde, followed by an acid-promoted cyclization. One advantage of this method is that separation of the three possible pinacol products that can form during the cross-coupling is not necessary.
