The paper examines the relationships between instrument epistemology, failure, and textual authority with reference to the place of scientific instruments in published narratives of 19th‐century exploration. The paper draws on Baird's work on instrument epistemology and "semantic ascent" and Gooday's work on failure and on the morality of measurement. Its empirical focus comes from examination of RGS manuscript AP 52, a list of instruments provided by the RGS for 31 explorers in the period c.1877 to c.1883. Instruments are shown to (do) work in the field, even as explorers admitted to failure, in the devices and in themselves. Narrative accounts, often compiled elsewhere, obscure the contingent nature of instruments' use. The findings have implications for assessing the agency of instruments in exploration, instrument epistemology, and narrative inscription, and for understanding failure in geographical work. The paper examines the work of instruments in 19th‐century exploration with reference to RGS MS AP 52, a list of 31 explorers at work between c.1877 and c.1883. Analysis shows that instruments failed to do the work expected and the paper explains why this was so and what authors did about it in producing printed narratives of exploration. The author presents a history of his efforts to design sustainable and economical circuit construction on paper, which he finds more akin to craft than industry. He focuses on a collection of modules called Rollz-5, which creates organic rhythms out of geometrical forms. This commentary expands on the problem of culturally imposed trauma described by Dorothy Evans Holmes. The focus on cultural trauma is both timely and necessary. I applaud Holmes’s attention to this important issue, and her clear articulation of its effects on intrapsychic and interpersonal life and the reluctance of psychoanalysis to engage with cultural trauma. My commentary explores two primary areas in an effort to further elaborate this issue: (a) The problem of defining cultural trauma as a legitimate type of trauma, and recognizing resistance to cultural trauma in psychology and psychoanalysis, and (b) the role of cultural context and narrative in addressing cultural trauma within psychoanalytic work. Aim To present a discussion on theoretical frameworks in infection prevention and control. Background Infection prevention and control programmes have been in place for several years in response to the incidence of healthcare-associated infections and their associated morbidity and mortality. Theoretical frameworks play an important role in formalizing the understanding of infection prevention activities. Design Discussion paper. Data sources A literature search using electronic databases was conducted for published articles in English addressing theoretical frameworks in infection prevention and control between 1980-2012. Results Nineteen papers that included a reference to frameworks were identified in the review. A narrative analysis of these papers was completed. Two models were identified and neither included the role of surveillance. Discussion To reduce the risk of acquiring a healthcare-associated infection, a multifaceted approach to infection prevention is required. One key component in this approach is surveillance. The review identified two infection prevention and control frameworks, yet these are rarely applied in infection prevention and control programmes. Only one framework considered the multifaceted approach required for infection prevention. It did not, however, incorporate the role of surveillance. We present a framework that incorporates the role of surveillance into a biopsychosocial approach to infection prevention and control. Conclusion Infection prevention and control programmes and associated research are led primarily by nurses. There is a need for an explicit infection prevention and control framework incorporating the important role that surveillance has in infection prevention activities. This paper develops the concept of 'imagined temporalities' to explore multiple temporal subjectivities, time cultures, 'myths', and realities evident in interviews with resettlement workers who were part of the Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme (VPRS) in Merseyside, United Kingdom (UK). Conducted in 2019, the interviews took place as the triggering of Article 50 signalled the withdrawal of the UK from the European Union (EU). This period of unprecedented social, economic, and political changes formed a crucial backdrop framing our interviewees' narratives. The views of resettlement workers have been little explored and are employed here to complement the insights provided by work undertaken by others with refugees and asylum seekers. This research provides important insights into their perceptions of the interplay of factors that affect belonging and access to supports for refugees and asylum seekers, revealing wider, largely underreported, concerns.1 These include, their own personal experiences working in support services and system changes, driven by growing socio-political pressures that impact on community-building among refugees during their resettlement. Significantly, debates about "Brexit" and the UK's political future, as well as heated public discussions of the historical legacies of colonialism which underpin the present treatment of migrants, are reflected in these resettlement workers' views as well. Subsequently, this paper employs the concept of 'imagined temporalities' to explore how support workers understand the treatment of migrants by social and political systems—and their own personal struggles and hopes,—against this wider, divisive post-Brexit backdrop. Overall, the paper underlines the highly politicised space the resettlement workers operate in, where they balance the needs of service users in the midst of constraints imposed by overly rigid time regimes. While contrary-to-fact conditions in Homeric narrative have already received considerable attention, those that occur in character speech, which potentially share some of the important and even metapoetic qualities as narrative conditions, have been understudied. This paper begins by offering a new classification of different kinds of counterfactuals that occur in direct speech, incorporating some of the methods of pragmatic linguistics. In the last decades, narrative theory has collaborated with sociology and anthropology of health to account for the importance that illness narratives hold for those who are or have been sick, for those who live with them, for the organizations where they work – if they do, and for public administration. The reason for the link between the two disciplines is that the way in which one explains one's illness to him or herself, as well as to others, has a crucial impact on one's experience of being ill as well as on others' reactions. This paper focuses on the work of one the most influential sociologists who has combined both disciplines: Frank's The Wounded Storyteller. To our mind, Frank's lucid account misses the importance of the biocapitalistic forces in his otherwise compelling reflection on illness narratives and proposal of three narrative types. In this paper, we suggest how the logic of the messianic narratives of Benjamin and Derrida can help identify the biocapitalistic forces that inform one of the illness narratives Frank studies and criticizes – the restitution narrative- and can help complement the narrative type Frank most praises – the quest narrative. The article presents an overview of narratives which college students wrote to discuss their experiences of locating, evaluating, and using information in the context of academic research and to discuss the challenges of writing research papers. A discussion of an analysis which was conducted on the narratives to demonstrate how they enhance the understanding of the college research experience and enable students to raise relevant questions in the classroom is presented.

Melanie Suchet's frank and engaging paper exemplifies a narrative-based discourse that is gaining prominence in the analytic literature. Eschewing any definition of terms, this discourse appropriates a wide array of analytic concepts to support a narration of co-creation of meaning and self-restoration in the clinical encounter. I examine a portion of the clinical case material to highlight some perceived pitfalls that arise from an uncritical and unsystematic use of theory. A particular pitfall is revealed in the way the author, while jettisoning the constraints of orthodox clinical theories, ends up overvaluing a singular explanatory model, thus unwittingly imposing a top-heavy, over-saturated interpretation on the clinical material. This unexamined theoretical bias leaves it unclear what should constitute the data of analytic observation: While ascribing crucial explanatory significance to socio-political narratives, which lead the analyst to feel that historical guilt over intercommunal conflicts must actually be redressed in the patient-analyst relationship, the author nevertheless pays little attention in the report to guilt dynamics arising from actual conflict in the here-and-now of the therapeutic encounter. Conceptual disarray is particularly noticeable in the confusion between identity and identification—that is, between a relatively fixed and consciously symbolized identity narrative, and something unconsciously taken on as a transient identification. Innovations are the product of entrepreneurs' imaginations. To turn imaginations into realized innovations, entrepreneurs must attract the resources necessary to create the innovations they envision. Resource acquisition involves crafting and communicating compelling narratives that persuade stakeholders to provide resources. However, there is not a clearly articulated theory linking entrepreneurial imagination, narratives, and the production of innovations. To construct such a theory, this paper extends work on narratives in literary theory and, specifically, Tolkien's theory of narrative fantasy. It is proposed that entrepreneurs' narratives about innovations are, initially, "fantasies" because they describe possible worlds in which the imagined innovations exist. As fantasies, the characteristics of persuasive fantasy narratives, such as the degree to which narratives achieve an inner consistency of reality and suspend audiences' disbelief, influence entrepreneurs' ability to convince stakeholders about the viability of imagined innovations. The proposed theory contributes to entrepreneurship scholarship by developing a process model that articulates how entrepreneurs' imaginations manifest in their narratives, which, in turn, influence the realization of innovations. The theory generates concrete implications for entrepreneurs and suggests that as the novelty of an imagined innovation increases, it becomes more critical for entrepreneurs to construct compelling narratives to describe the innovation. Thus, entrepreneurs and scholars should be attentive to the role narratives play in moving beyond the idea phase of entrepreneurship and bridging imagination and innovation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article argues that the Victorian novel is governed by the logic of storage: the accumulation of data and the deferral of action. Focusing on Mary Elizabeth Braddon's Lady Audley's Secret (1862), I demonstrate that the sensation novel is caught between the winnowing directive of the detection plot and the capaciousness of Victorian literary form. The novel's many objects register information and delay narrative, but they never quite get activated as clues. I track three kinds of paper objects—files, memoranda, and keepsakes—all of which linger in storage, declining in value and awaiting an opportunity for transmission that might never arrive. Disposable yet persistent, paper evokes the cultural confusion over how to save and what, if anything, to discard. I contextualize the novel with government records and journalism from the period, all of which express similar archival anxieties. Braddon's novel ultimately muddles the distinction between clue and litter, keepsake and junk, archive and hoard, as well as between significant and insignificant narrative information.
