Microplastics (MPs), as emerging pollutants, have attracted the attention of environmentalists, statespersons, and the scientific community over the last few decades. To address the spread of MPs in the environment, it is imperative to develop various removal techniques and materials that are effective, scalable, and ecologically benign. However, to the best of our knowledge, no review has systematically examined the removal of MPs using adsorption or provided an in-depth discussion on various adsorbents. Adsorption is an inexpensive and effective technology for wastewater treatment. Recently, many researchers have conducted studies on MP remediation using diverse adsorbent materials, such as biochar, activated carbon, sponges, carbon nanotubes, metal-layered oxides, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and zeolites. Each adsorbent has advantages and disadvantages. To overcome their disadvantages, researchers have been designing and developing hybrid adsorbents for MP remediation. This review provides insights into these individual adsorbents and also discusses hybrid adsorbents for MP removal. Finally, the review elaborates on future possibilities and ways to enable more efficient, scalable, and environmentally friendly MP cleanup. Microcystins with leucine arginine (MC-LR) is a virulent hepatotoxin, which is commonly present in polluted water with its demethylated derivatives [Dha 7 ] MC-LR. This study reported a low-cost molecularly imprinted polymer network-based electrochemical sensor for detecting MC-LR. The sensor was based on a three-dimensional conductive network composed of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), graphene quantum dots (GQDs), and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The molecularly imprinted polymer was engineered by quantum chemical computation utilizing p-aminothiophenol (p-ATP) and methacrylic acid (MAA) as dual functional monomers and L-arginine as a segment template. The electrochemical reaction mechanism of MC-LR on the sensor was studied for the first time, which is an irreversible electrochemical oxidation reaction involving an electron and two protons, and is controlled by a mixed adsorption-diffusion mechanism. The sensor exhibited a great detection response to MC-LR in the linear range of 0.08-2 μg/L, and the limit of detection (LOD) is 0.0027 μg/L (S/N = 3). In addition, the recoveries of the total amount of MC-LR and [Dha 7 ] MC-LR in the actual sample by the obtained sensor were in the range from 91.4 to 116.7%, which indicated its great potential for environmental detection.

Novel phase change materials composed of polyethylene glycol (PEG), cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were developed by an efficient and environment friendly strategy. The CNFs were modified and cross-linked by chitosan to form three-dimensional network structure, which provides strong support for the resulting CNF/CNT/PEG composites. The structure and properties of CNF/CNT/PEG composites were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, spectrums, and differential scanning calorimeter. They exhibit high latent heat (158.3 J/g), low heat loss (0.75%) and excellent photo-thermal conversion (energy storage efficiency 85.6%), electro-thermal conversion (energy storage efficiency 92.3%) properties. In this study, we developed a humidity sensor with high sensitivity based on cellulose nanofiber/carbon nanotube (CNF/CNT) hybrid foam. The porous structure of the foam not only provides more contact interface for water molecules adsorption, but also tunes the conductivity of the CCF closed to the point where the sensor is most sensitive to the change in humidity. With this porous structural design, the obtained foam sensor shows a high humidity sensitivity of 87.3% (ΔI/I 0 , and the response limit is 100%), excellent linearity (R 2  = 0.996) within the humidity range from 29 to 95% relative humidity (RH), and good long-time stability (more than two months). Furthermore, the water vapor adsorption behavior of the CNF/CNT foam sensor can be well described by the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. Finally, a simple humidity measuring device based on the CNF/CNT foam is presented, which can find good applications for human breath and fingertip humidity monitoring., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Solar-driven steam generation for desalination is a facile, sustainable, and energy-saving approach to produce clean freshwater. However, the complicated fabrication process, high cost, potential environmental impact, and salt crystallization of conventional evaporators limit their large-scale application. Herein, we present a sustainable Janus evaporator based on a biopolymer sponge from the water hyacinth petiole (WHP) for high-performance solar steam generation. The freeze-dried WHP maintained its original porous structure and aligned channels well, and therefore holds the capability for rapid water transport due to strong capillary action. The WHP coated with carbon nanotubes/ethyl cellulose paste on its surface (WHP-C) gains a good photothermal property, thus achieving an efficient solar steam generation with a rate of 1.50 kg m -2 h -1 under 1 sun irradiation. Moreover, the WHP-C after hydrophobic modification by fluorocarbon (WHP-CH) is endowed with high water repellency and exhibits good salt resistance during long-term solar desalination. Additionally, we demonstrate that a stable wet surface that enables efficient water supply and vapor escape is also significant to the successive desalination of a solar evaporator. Our work provides new insights into the high-value utilization of biomass waste, i.e., water hyacinth, and the development of sustainable interfacial solar evaporators for the environmentally friendly production of freshwater.

For practical energy storage devices, a bottleneck is to retain decent integrated performances while increasing the mass loading of active materials to the commercial level, which highlights an urgent need for novel electrode structure design strategies. Here, an active nitrogen-doped carbon interface with "high conductivity, high porosity, and high electrolyte affinity" on a flexible cellulose electrode surface is engineered to accommodate 1D active materials. The high conductivity of interface favors fast electron transport, while its high porosity and high electrolyte affinity properties benefit ion migration. As a result, the flexible anode accommodated by carbon nanotubes achieves an ultrahigh capacitance of 9501 mF cm -2 (315.6 F g -1 ) at a high mass loading of 30.1 mg cm -2 , and the flexible cathode accommodated by polypyrrole nanotubes realizes a remarkably high capacitance of 6212 mF cm -2 (248 F g -1 , 25 mg cm -2 ). The assembled flexible quasi-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor delivers a maximum energy density of 1.42 mWh cm -2 (2.2 V, 2105 mF cm -2 ), representing the highest value among all reported flexible supercapacitors. Flexible paper-based sensors may be applied in numerous fields, but this requires addressing their limitations related to poor thermal and water resistance, which results in low service life. Herein, we report a paper-based composite sensor composed of carboxylic carbon nanotubes (CCNTs) and poly- m -phenyleneisophthalamide (PMIA), fabricated by a facile papermaking process. The CCNT/PMIA composite sensor exhibits an ability to detect pressures generated by various human movements, attributed to the sensor's conductive network and the characteristic "mud-brick" microstructure. The sensor exhibits the capability to monitor human motions, such as bending of finger joints and elbow joints, speaking, blinking, and smiling, as well as temperature variations in the range of 30-90 °C. Such a capability to sensitively detect pressure can be realized at different applied frequencies, gradient sagittas, and multiple twists with a short response time (104 ms) even after being soaked in water, acid, and alkali solutions. Moreover, the sensor demonstrates excellent mechanical properties and hence can be folded up to 6000 times without failure, can bear 5 kg of load without breaking, and can be cycled 2000 times without energy loss, providing a great possibility for a long sensing life. Additionally, the composite sensor shows exceptional Joule heating performance, which can reach 242 °C in less than 15 s even when powered by a low input voltage (25 V). From the perspective of industrialization, low-cost and large-scale roll-to-roll production of the paper-based sensor can be achieved, with a formed length of thousands of meters, showing great potential for future industrial applications as a wearable smart sensor for detecting pressure and temperature, with the capability of electric heating.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the expression profile of genes involved in signaling, intracellular and extracellular Ca +2 concentration and apoptosis pathways of osteoblasts in contact with a scaffold made of a composite of BCN/MWCNTs. Osteoblasts were cultivated on BCN, MWCNTs and their mixtures. Osteoblast RNA was extracted for sintering cDNA to amplify genes of interest by PCR; intra- and extracellular calcium (Ca 2+) was also quantified. Regarding the genes that participate in the regulation paths (MAPK and NF-KB), it was found that only the expression of NF-KB was affected in all treatments. The expression of VEGFA increased, except in the treatment of high concentration of MWCNTs, where remained unchanged. The expression of genes Apaf-1 and Bcl-2/Bax and TP53 increased as compared to the control (except for TP53 in BC and C1/MWCNTs) indicating that cells are responding to the presence of BCN-MWCNTs composites scaffolds. The results suggest that osteoblast developed a modification in the expression profile of genes that actively participate in cellular processes such as proliferation, vasculogenesis and apoptosis, which may be modulated by the increase of intra- and extracellular Ca 2+ concentration., (Copyright © 2020. The present work deals with using thermal aggregation of spray drying to achieve uniform structuring of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) with carbon nanotubes (CNT), for obtaining rough annular microparticles with hierarchical dual dimensions. The structure and characteristics of CNC are crucial to microparticle assembly and superhydrophobic modification. The polyurethane (PU) was used to enhance the firmness of microparticles, during thermal aggregation. The investigated CNC/CNT/PU microparticles showed excellent separation ability for water-in-oil emulsions. Moreover, an abrasion-resistant superhydrophobic coating that combined fast and intelligent water-removing, electrical-conductive and antibacterial functions was manufactured through simple spray coating, which profited from effective role of CNT in excellent conversion of light to heat, as well as its thermal, electrical conductivity and antibacterial properties., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Ltd. In recent years, carbon aerogels have attracted much attention in basic research and as potential applications in many fields. Herein, the authors report a novel approach using bamboo powder as raw material to fabricate cellulose nanofibers (CNFs)/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) carbon aerogels by a simple dipping and carbonisation process. The developed material exhibits many exciting properties including low density (0.056 g cm -3 ), high porosity (95%), efficient capability for separation of oily droplets from water, and high adsorption capacity for a variety of oils and organic solvents by up to 110 times its own weight. Furthermore, the CNF/MWCNT carbon aerogels (CMCA) can be recycled many times by distillation and combustion, satisfying the requirements of practical oil-water separation. Taken together with its economical, environmentally benign manufacturing process, sustainability of the precursor and versatility of material, the CMCA developed in this study will be a promising candidate for addressing the problems arising from the spills of oily compounds.

In this paper we explore the use of native bacterial cellulose (BC) in combination with functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) as an original biomaterial, suitable three-dimensional (3D) scaffold for osteoblastic cell culture. Functionalized MWNTs were mixed with native BC (secreted by Gluconacetobacter xylinus) with the aim of reinforcing the mechanical properties of BC. The results indicate that BC-MWNTs scaffolds support osteoblast viability, adhesion and proliferation at higher levels as compared to traditional culture substrates. Chemically functionalized MWNTs are also an excellent material to be used as scaffold because these did not affect cell viability and showed an enhanced osteoblast adhesion.
