Charge separation in photosynthetic light reactions has gained much interest in an attempt to fabricate biological photovoltaic devices through integration of photosynthetic material and conducting electrodes. Direct interaction between thylakoids, as representatives of photosynthetic materials, and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) is expected to increase charge transfer. Thylakoids are isolated from spinach leaf chloroplasts and pristine MWCNTs are dispersed in Triton X-100 (TX-100) as a surfactant to retain their electronic properties through non-covalent interactions. The Raman and UV-Vis spectra suggest close interactions between the thylakoids and the MWCNTs. Stable thylakoids including the embedded protein subunits and light harvesting antennas can be detected from the non-shifted 680 nm absorbance peak. The 50% fluorescence quenching in the MWCNTs-thylakoids preparation as compared to thylakoids alone using single wavelength excitation suggests charge transfer between the thylakoids and the MWCNTs.

Electrochemical electrodes based on dense and vertically aligned arrays of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were produced. The open tips of individual hollow nanotubes are exposed as active sites while the entangled nanotube stems encapsulated in epoxy collectively provide multiplexed and highly conductive pathways for charge transport. This unique structure together with the extraordinary electrical and electrochemical properties of MWCNTs offers a high signal-to-noise ratio (thus high sensitivity) and a large detection range, compared with other carbon-based electrodes. Our electrodes can detect K(3)FeCN(6) and dopamine at concentrations as low as 5 nM and 10 nM, respectively, and are responsive in a large dynamic range that spans almost 5 orders of magnitude.

We present a simple solution surface dip coating method for fabricating transparent and conductive carbon nanotube/polyvinyl butyral (CNT/PVB) composite films. This fabrication process is simple to scale production and requires only ethanol and water as solvents, which is green and environment friendly.

Pure metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes (m-SWCNTs) are very desirable for many electrode and interconnecting applications. However, the lack of reliable processing techniques to sort m-SWCNTs from the as-synthesized SWCNT samples is an obstacle to these applications. The effects of carbene-based covalent functionalization on the electrical properties of an isolated m-SWCNT, a semiconducting (s)-SWCNT, and a mixture network of both m- and s-SWCNTs are reported. For the first time, a semiconducting-to-metallic SWCNT transition upon dichlorocarbene functionalization is observed. Interestingly, the transition is reversible upon thermal annealing under ambient conditions. The electrical properties of m-SWCNTs remain largely unaffected whereas the on-state conductivity of s-SWCNTs is greatly reduced by this process, in agreement with the relevant theoretical predictions. Current as-grown single-walled carbon nanotubes vary in diameter and chirality, which results in variations in their electronic and optical properties. Two approaches have been intensively studied to obtain chirality-pure nanotube structures and thus uniform properties for advanced applications. The first approach involves the post-synthesis separation according to the nanotubes' chiral vectors (n, m), and the second one involves direct synthes of carbon nanotubes with the same (n, m). This paper reviews the efforts along these two directions, with emphasis on the most recent progress of post-synthesis separation and the perspectives of controllable synthesis.
