Different from traditional colloidal particles based on Brownian motion, micro/nanomotors are micro/nanoscale devices capable of performing complex tasks in liquid media via transforming various energy sources into mechanical motion or actuation. Such unique self-propulsion endows motors with fantastic capabilities to access and enter the deep layer of targeted diseased tissue, which in turn breaks through the limitation of the poor permeability of traditional pharmaceutical preparations, thus providing giant prospects for active therapy. It is noteworthy that recently several studies, which utilized the byproducts generated in situ by micro/nanomotors to achieve active therapy, in a truly green zero-waste manner, have been carried out. In this minireview, we highlight the recent efforts with respect to active therapy based on the byproducts of micro/nanomotors, expecting to motivate readers to expand the practical biomedical application scope of micro/nanomotors in a broader horizon. Accompanied by ever booming enthusiasm and persevering exploration, micro/nanomotors are on their way to revolutionize conventional fields.

Since their naissance in the 2000s, various micro or nanomotors with powerful functions have been proposed. Among them, polymer-based micro or nanomotors stand out for the easy processing and facile functionalization, holding immense potential for bioapplications. In this review, fabrication of polymer-based micro or nanomotors and their applications in biomedical areas are covered. Classic manufacturing approaches as well as cutting-edge techniques are discussed with representative works highlighted. Micro/nanomotors (MNMs) are miniature machines that can convert chemical or external energy into their own mechanical motions. In previous decades, significant efforts have been made to improve the performance of MNMs. For practical applications, the biodegradability of MNMs is an important aspect that must be considered, particularly in the biomedical field. In this review, recent progress in the biodegradability of MNMs and their potential applications are summarized. Different biodegradable materials, including metals and polymers, or other strategies for the fabrication of MNMs, are presented. Mobile micro- and nano-motors (MNMs) emerge as revolutionary platforms for biomedical applications, including drug delivery, biosensing, non-invasive surgery, and cancer therapy. While for applications in biomedical fields and practical clinical translation, the interactions of these untethered tiny machines with the immune system is an essential issue to be considered. This review highlights the recent approaches of surpassing immune barriers to prevent foreign motors from triggering immune responses. In addition to trials focusing on the function preservation of MNMs, examples of versatile MNMs working with the immune components (immune molecules, immune cells and the whole system) to achieve cancer immunotherapy, immunoassay, and detoxification are outlined. The immune interference part provides researchers an idea about what is the limit presented by the immune components. The coworking part suggests ways to bypass or even utilize the limit. Carbon monoxide (CO), an important gas signaling molecule, demonstrated various physiological and pathological functions by regulating the ion flux of biological channels. Herein, inspired by the CO-regulated K + channel in vivo, we propose a smart CO-responsive nanosensor through the redox reaction strategy. Such nanosensor demonstrated an outstanding CO specificity and selectivity with high ion rectification (∼9) as well as excellent stability and recyclability. Therefore, these results will provide a new direction for the design of nanochannel-based sensors for future practical and biological applications.

Inspired by the highly versatile natural motors, artificial micro-/nanomotors that can convert surrounding energies into mechanical motion and accomplish multiple tasks are devised. In the past few years, micro-/nanomotors have demonstrated significant potential in biomedicine. However, the practical biomedical applications of these small-scale devices are still at an infant stage. For successful bench-to-bed translation, biocompatibility of micro-/nanomotor systems is the central issue to be considered. Herein, the recent progress in micro-/nanomotors in biocompatibility is reviewed, with a special focus on their biomedical applications. As a new type of micro-/nanomachines, self-propelled micro-/nanomotors (MNMs) can convert chemical or external energies from the surrounding environment into mechanical forces to produce autonomous motion. The ability of autonomous movement allows these MNMs to move actively to the targeted locations, and thus confers great potentials on the MNMs for applications in biomedicine, especially in drug delivery. MNMs have been shown to effectively load therapeutic payloads for active delivery to the disease site, which greatly improves the therapeutic efficacy and reduces side effects compared with the traditional nanodrugs. In this review, we provide an overview of different propulsion mechanisms of MNMs, including chemical propulsion based on redox reaction and external field propulsion driven by external energy such as light, magnetic field, electric field and ultrasound, followed by a review of the recent progress in active drug delivery based on MNMs in the past decade. We also discuss the current challenges and future perspectives of the application of the MNMs.

Nanocomposites of chitosan and graphene oxide are prepared by simple self-assembly of both components in aqueous media. It is observed that graphene oxide is dispersed on a molecular scale in the chitosan matrix and some interactions occur between chitosan matrix and graphene oxide sheets. These are responsible for efficient load transfer between the nanofiller graphene and chitosan matrix. Compared with the pure chitosan, the tensile strength, and Young's modulus of the graphene-based materials are significantly improved by about 122 and 64%, respectively, with incorporation of 1 wt % graphene oxide. At the same time, the elongation at the break point increases remarkably. The experimental results indicate that graphene oxide sheets prefer to disperse well within the nanocomposites.

Recently, multimodality molecular imaging has evolved into a fast-growing research field with goals of detecting and measuring biological processes in vivo non-invasively. Researchers have come to realize that the complementary abilities of different imaging modalities over single modality could provide more precisely information for the diagnosis of diseases. At present, nanoparticles-based multimodal imaging probes have received significant attention because of their ease of preparation and straightforward integration of each modality into one entity. More importantly, nanotechnology has an increasing impact on multimodality molecular imaging of cardiovascular diseases, such as atherosclerosis and vulnerable plaque, myocardial infarction, angiogenesis, apoptosis and so on. In this review, we briefly summarize that various nanoprobes are exploited for targeted molecular imaging of cardiovascular diseases, as well as associated multimodality imaging approaches and their applications in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
