Cytochrome c (Cyt c) release and cellular pH change are two important mediators of apoptosis. Effective methods to regulate or monitor such two events are therefore highly desired for apoptosis research and cancer cell therapy. Herein, we exploited electrostimulation to regulate cellular Cyt c release and apoptosis process, and by designing and preparing a smart and efficient plasmonic nanorobot (with surface-modified Cyt c-specific aptamer and 4-mercaptobenzoic acid) that is capable of Cyt c capture and self-sensing, we achieved real-time SERS monitoring of dynamic Cyt c release and simultaneous cell acidification in apoptosis during electrostimulation. Distinctly different molecular stress responses in the two events for cancerous MCF-7 and HeLa cells and normal L929 cells were identified and revealed. The method and results are valuable and promising for apoptosis and Cyt c-mediated biology studies.

Diameter is a major concern for nanopore based sensing. However, directly pulling glass capillary nanopore with diameter down to sub-10 nm is very difficult. So, post treatment is sometimes necessary. Herein, we demonstrate a facile and effective wet-chemical method to shrink the diameter of glass capillary nanopore from several tens of nanometers to sub-10 nm by disodium silicate hydrolysis. Its benefits for DNA translocation are investigated. The shrinking of glass capillary nanopore not only slows down DNA translocation, but also enhances DNA translocation signal and signal-to-noise ratio significantly (102.9 for 6.4 nm glass nanopore, superior than 15 for a 3 nm silicon nitride nanopore). It also affects DNA translocation behaviors, making the approach and glass capillary nanopore platform promising for DNA translocation studies.

Shell‐isolated nanostructures, consisting of an inert shell and a plasmonic core, have recently been intensively explored for biosensing, catalysis, and nanoelectronics applications owing to their functional shells and unique plasmonic properties. Such designer shell‐isolated plasmonic nanostructures possess the potential to improve the detectability of biosensors and provide powerful platforms to explore in‐depth plasmon enhancement principles and finally boost significantly their photo(electro)catalytic efficiency. In addition, such structural optimization and interface nanoengineering promote solid developments of advanced nanoelectronics toward real applications, revealing new electron transport mechanisms and enabling exploration of new functional and integrated optoelectronic devices. In this overview, the state‐of‐the‐art progresses of shell‐isolated plasmonic nanostructures (SHIPNSs) in the field of biosensing, photo(electro)catalysis, and nanoelectronics is summarized, focusing on the superiority of the core–shell materials in exploration of biosensing, catalytic enhancement mechanisms, and electron transport principles. A brief overview of synthetic methods is introduced, and then the significant importance of shell‐isolated nanomaterials in fabrication and promising direction for future development and challenges are discussed.
