A great number of butterfly species in the warmer climate have evolved to exhibit fascinating optical properties on their wing scales which can both regulate the wing temperature and exhibit structural coloring in order to increase their chances of survival. In particular, the Archaeoprepona demophon dorsal wing demonstrates notable radiative cooling performance and iridescent colors based on the nanostructure of the wing scale that can be characterized by the nanoporous matrix with the periodic nanograting structure on the top matrix surface. Inspired by the natural species, we demonstrate a multifunctional biomimetic film that reconstructs the nanostructure of the Archaeoprepona demophon wing scales to replicate the radiative cooling and structural coloring functionalities. We resorted to the SiO 2 sacrificial template-based solution process to mimic the random porous structure and laser-interference lithography to reproduce the nanograting architecture of the butterfly wing scale. As a result, the biomimetic structure of the nanograted surface on top of the porous film demonstrated desirable heat transfer and optical properties for outstanding radiative cooling performance and iridescent structural coloring. In this regard, the film is capable of inducing the maximum temperature drop of 8.45 °C, and the color gamut of the biomimetic film can cover 91.8% of the standardized color profile (sRGB).

Many natural surfaces, including the wings of cicada insects, have shown to display bactericidal properties as a result of surface topography. Moreover, the size and distribution of the surface features (on the nano- and microscale) are known to influence the efficacy of the surface at inhibiting bacterial cell growth. While these types of natural surfaces illustrate the effect of structure on the bactericidal activity, a deeper understanding can be achieved by creating surfaces of different feature sizes. This is essential in order to understand the effects of changes of surface topography on bacteria-surface interactions. To this end, we have performed a series of replica molding processes of the wings of the Megapomponia Intermedia cicada to prepare wing replicas in polyethylene glycol (PEG), which possess the topographical features of the wing surface, with a minimum loss of feature resolution. Atomic force microscopy characterization of these patterned surfaces in both air and aqueous environments shows that by controlling the swelling characteristics of the PEG, we can control the ultimate swollen dimensions of the nanopillar structures on the surface of PEG. As a result, by using a single wing with an average nanopillar height of 220 nm, different patterned PEG samples with nanopillar heights ranging from 180 to 307 nm were produced.

Nature features a plethora of extraordinary photonic architectures that have been optimized through natural evolution in order to more efficiently reflect, absorb or scatter light. While numerical optimization is increasingly and successfully used in photonics, it has yet to replicate any of these complex naturally occurring structures. Using evolutionary algorithms inspired by natural evolution and performing particular optimizations (maximize reflection for a given wavelength, for a broad range of wavelength or maximize the scattering of light), we have retrieved the most stereotypical natural photonic structures. Whether those structures are Bragg mirrors, chirped dielectric mirrors or the gratings on top of Morpho butterfly wings, our results indicate how such regular structures might have spontaneously emerged in nature and to which precise optical or fabrication constraints they respond. Comparing algorithms show that recombination between individuals, inspired by sexual reproduction, confers a clear advantage that can be linked to the fact that photonic structures are fundamentally modular: each part of the structure has a role which can be understood almost independently from the rest. Such an in silico evolution also suggests original and elegant solutions to practical problems, as illustrated by the design of counter-intuitive anti-reflective coatings for solar cells.

With the function of mediating intercellular communication between cells, extracellular vesicles (EVs) have been intently studied for their physiopathology and clinical application values. However, efficient EV isolation from biological fluids remains a significant challenge. To address this, this work constructs a new microvortex chip that can isolate EVs efficiently by integrating the lipid nanoprobe modified Morpho Menelaus (M. Menelaus) butterfly wing into microfluidic chip. M. Menelaus wing is well known for its orderly arranged periodic nanostructures and can generate microvortex when liquid passes through it, leading to increased interaction between EVs and M. Menelaus wing. In addition, the nanoprobe containing lipid tails can be inserted into EVs through their lipid bilayer membrane structure. Based on the described properties, high-throughput enrichment of EVs with over 70% isolation efficiency was realized. Moreover, it was demonstrated that the nanoprobe system based on M. Menelaus wing enabled downstream biological analysis of nucleic acids and proteins in EVs. Cicada wings, covered with arranged nanostructures, were widely studied owing to their high transparency and low reflection. However, limited by technologies, their exquisite surface structures and multifunctional features were not inherited and applied by most artificial materials adequately. Here, the excellent optical properties of the cicada wing were investigated in detail experimentally and theoretically. Besides, a flexible self-cleaning broadband antireflective film inspired by the cicada wing has been successfully fabricated by a well-designed biological template method and sol-gel process. The cicada wing ( Megapomponia intermedia) was selected as the original template directly, and a SiO 2 negative replica was obtained by a sol-gel process. Then, chemical corrosion was used to remove the original template, retaining the pure negative replica. Subsequently, the polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) positive replica could be rebuilt after another sol-gel process. Compared with a flat PMMA film, the average reflectivity of the structured PMMA film over the visible region was reduced from 10 to 2%. Besides, the bio-inspired film with a thickness of 0.18 mm exhibited satisfactory comprehensive performances with low reflectance (≤2%) in most of the visible region, as well as superhydrophobic property and perfect flexibility. Our results offered a quick and simple method to rebuild the nanostructured functional materials, promoting the practical applications of the bionic nanostructured materials. Meanwhile, the modified biomimetic fabrication method provides a solution for rebuilding exquisite biological materials and designing multifunctional surfaces. Moreover, the multifunctional antireflective film with wider universality will exhibit an enormous potential application value in optical communications, photoelectric devices, flexible display screens, and antidazzle glasses.

The waxy epicuticle of dragonfly wings contains a unique nanostructured pattern that exhibits bactericidal properties. In light of emerging concerns of antibiotic resistance, these mechano-bactericidal surfaces represent a particularly novel solution by which bacterial colonization and the formation of biofilms on biomedical devices can be prevented. Pathogenic bacterial biofilms on medical implant surfaces cause a significant number of human deaths every year. The proposed mechanism of bactericidal activity is through mechanical cell rupture; however, this is not yet well understood and has not been well characterized. In this study, we used giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs) as a simplified cell membrane model to investigate the nature of their interaction with the surface of the wings of two dragonfly species, Austrothemis nigrescens and Trithemis annulata, sourced from Victoria, Australia, and the Baix Ebre and Terra Alta regions of Catalonia, Spain. Confocal laser scanning microscopy and cryo-scanning electron microscopy techniques were used to visualize the interactions between the GUVs and the wing surfaces. When exposed to both natural and gold-coated wing surfaces, the GUVs were adsorbed on the surface, exhibiting significant deformation, in the process of membrane rupture. Differences between the tensile rupture limit of GUVs composed of 1,2-dioleoyl- sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine and the isotropic tension generated from the internal osmotic pressure were used to indirectly determine the membrane tensions, generated by the nanostructures present on the wing surfaces. These were estimated as being in excess of 6.8 mN m -1 , the first experimental estimate of such mechano-bactericidal surfaces. This simple model provides a convenient bottom-up approach toward understanding and characterizing the bactericidal properties of nanostructured surfaces.

A characteristic feature of the giant owl butterfly, i.e. Caligo memnon , is its big wing eyespot. This feature could serve as deceiving functionality for the butterfly against predators. As evidenced by scanning electron microscope (SEM) image on black part of eyespot, the scales on wing eyespot contain nanostructured ridges and cross-ribs. Applying direct measurement, statistical method, and Fourier analysis, the authors evidence that these nanostructures display order-disorder in their shape and position. The autocorrelation of SEM image provides average values of characteristic periods of the order-disorder nanostructures together with an estimation of corresponding correlation lengths. Linecuts obtained from the Fourier transform of SEM image were also analysed with the Hosemann function to extract similar information. These analyses indicate that the nanostructured order-disorder may contribute to blackness on wing eyespot. The authors thus conclude that the blackness on wing eyespot of C. memnon could be attributed to contributions from both the nanostructured order-disorder and melanin pigment.

Using optical two-beam lithography with improved resolution and enhanced mechanical strength, we demonstrate the replication of gyroid photonic nanostructures found in the butterfly Callophrys rubi. These artificial structures are shown to have size, controllability, and uniformity that are superior to those of their biological counterparts. In particular, the elastic Young's modulus of fabricated nanowires is enhanced by up to 20%. As such, the circular dichroism enabled by the gyroid nanostructures can operate in the near-ultraviolet wavelength region, shorter than that supported by the natural butterfly wings of C. rubi. This fabrication technique provides a unique tool for extracting three-dimensional photonic designs from nature and will aid the investigation of biomimetic nanostructures.

Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a powerful tool with great potential to provide improved bio-sensing capabilities. The current 'gold-standard' method for diagnosis of malaria involves visual inspection of blood smears using light microscopy, which is time consuming and can prevent early diagnosis of the disease. We present a novel surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy substrate based on gold-coated butterfly wings, which enabled detection of malarial hemozoin pigment within lysed blood samples containing 0.005% and 0.0005% infected red blood cells.

In search of new solutions to complex challenges, researchers are turning to living nature for inspiration. For example, special surface characteristics of rice leaves and butterfly wings combine the shark skin (anisotropic flow leading to low drag) and lotus leaf (superhydrophobic and self-cleaning) effects, producing the so-called rice and butterfly wing effect. In this paper, we study four microstructured surfaces inspired by rice leaves and fabricated with photolithography techniques. We also present a method of creating such surfaces using a hot embossing procedure for scaled-up manufacturing. Fluid drag, self-cleaning, contact angle, and contact angle hysteresis data are presented to understand the role of sample geometrical dimensions. Conceptual modeling provides design guidance when developing novel low drag, self-cleaning, and potentially antifouling surfaces for medical, marine, and industrial applications.

The nanopattern on the surface of Clanger cicada (Psaltoda claripennis) wings represents the first example of a new class of biomaterials that can kill bacteria on contact based solely on their physical surface structure. The wings provide a model for the development of novel functional surfaces that possess an increased resistance to bacterial contamination and infection. We propose a biophysical model of the interactions between bacterial cells and cicada wing surface structures, and show that mechanical properties, in particular cell rigidity, are key factors in determining bacterial resistance/sensitivity to the bactericidal nature of the wing surface. We confirmed this experimentally by decreasing the rigidity of surface-resistant strains through microwave irradiation of the cells, which renders them susceptible to the wing effects. The dependence of optical reflectivity and wettability on the surface topography of 32 species of cicada wing membranes has been investigated using UV-visible spectrophotometry, contact angle measurements and environmental scanning electron microscopy. The nanoscale hexagonally close packed protrusions have been shown to exhibit an anti-reflection and in some cases an anti-wetting function. The parameters of the structures were measured to be 77-148 nm in diameter, 44-117 nm in spacing and 159-481 nm in height. The transmittance spectrum and static contact angles were measured. At a wavelength range of 500-2500 nm, only minor differences in the anti-reflection performance were observed for each cicada species ascribed to the mechanism of impedance matching between cuticle and air. The transmittance properties of cicada wings were altered successfully through the scanning probe microscope-based manipulation by reducing the protrusion height via the contact mode. A near linear dependence was found between a decrease in protuberance height and a resulting increase in reflectance intensity. A diversity of wettability was observed with contact angles varying from 56.5° to 146.0°. Both effects of anti-reflection and wettability are dependent on the height of protrusions. The anti-reflection is insensitive when the wavelength is larger than the lateral feature size of the nanostructure. The stronger hydrophobic properties are generally associated with a larger diameter, closer spacing and greater height of protrusions when the wing membrane is intact.

The fine structure of the wing scale of a Morpho Peleides butterfly was examined carefully, and the entire configuration was completely replicated by a uniform Al(2)O(3) coating through a low-temperature ALD process. An inverted structure was achieved by removing the butterfly wing template at high temperature, forming a polycrystalline Al(2)O(3) shell structure with precisely controlled thickness. Other than the copy of the morphology of the structure, the optical property, such as the existence of PBG, was also inherited by the alumina replica. Reflection peaks at the violet/blue range were detected on both original wings and their replica, while a simple alumina coating shifted the reflection peak to longer wavelength because of the change of periodicity and refraction index. The alumina replicas also exhibited similar functional structures as waveguide and beam splitter, which may be used as the building blocks for photonic ICs with high reproducibility and lower fabrication cost compared to traditional lithography techniques.

The present study demonstrates a surface structure that mimics the water harvesting wing surface of the Namib Desert beetle. Hydrophilic patterns on superhydrophobic surfaces were created with water/2-propanol solutions of a polyelectrolyte to produce surfaces with extreme hydrophobic contrast. Selective deposition of multilayer films onto the hydrophilic patterns introduces different properties to the area including superhydrophilicity. Potential applications of such surfaces include water harvesting surfaces, controlled drug release coatings, open-air microchannel devices, and lab-on-chip devices.

In this paper we showed a new approach for the fabrication of a photonic crystal with a three-dimensional structure. By replicating biomaterials such as the wing of Mopho butterfly with TiO2 nanoparticles using the nanoparticles infiltration method, we can derive photonic crystals with unique structures, which is difficult to fabricate by other approaches. New optical properties are anticipated.

Biomimetic research indicates that many phenomena regarding wettability in nature, such as the self-cleaning effect on a lotus leaf and cicada wing, the anisotropic dewetting behavior on a rice leaf, and striking superhydrophobic force provided by a water strider's leg, are all related to the unique micro- and nanostructures on the surfaces. It gives us much inspiration to realize special wettability on functional surfaces through the cooperation between the chemical composition and the surface micro- and nanostructures, which may bring great advantages in a wide variety of applications in daily life, industry, and agriculture. This Account reviews recent progress in these aspects.
