In order to alleviate the energy crisis and propel a low-carbon economy, hydrogen (H2) plays an important role as a renewable cleaning resource. To break the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) bottleneck, we need high-efficiency electrocatalysts. Based on the synergistic effect between bimetallic oxides, hierarchical mesoporous CoNiO2 nanosheets can be fabricated. Combining physical representations with electrochemical measurements, the resultant CoNiO2 catalysts present the hierarchical microflowers morphology assembled by mesoporous nanosheets. The ultrathin two-dimensional nanosheets and porous surface characteristics provide the vast channels for electrolyte injection, thus endowing CoNiO2 the outstanding HER performance. The excellent performance with a fewer onset potential of 94 mV, a smaller overpotential at 10 mA cm−2, a lower Tafel slope of 109 mV dec−1 and better stability after 1000 cycles makes CoNiO2 better than that of metallic Co and metallic Ni. Formation of Mg(OH)2nanowires and their assemblies with sphere-shaped, echinus-shaped and nest-like micro-structures on a Mg-Li alloy surface was successfully demonstrated. Mg(OH)2nanowires were formed on the alloy surface via a self-growth process, after the alloy was electrooxidised in NaCl solution and the oxidation products were removed. The nanowires were characterised by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Infrared spectroscopy. The nanowires have hexagonal rod-like or brush-like morphology and are poorly crystallised. Pre-anodisation and the presence of Li in the alloy are key factors for the nanowire growth, which likely proceeds via a dissolution–precipitation mechanism. The roles of Li can be attributed to the prohibition of the formation of passivation film on the alloy surface and the acceleration of the formation of OH−anions through hydrogen-evolution reaction. Abstract: Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) replaced oxygen (O2) as oxidant has been widely investigated due to its faster reduction kinetics, easier storage and handling than gaseous oxygen. The main challenge of using H2O2 as oxidant is the chemical decomposition. In this article, by using different C2H5OH/H2O volume ratio as the solvent, Co3O4 with different morphologies (nanosheet, nanowire, ultrafine nanowire net, nanobelts, and honeycomb-like) direct growth on Ni foam are synthesized via a simple solvothermal method for the first time. Results show that the introduction of ethanol could obviously improve the catalytic performance toward H2O2 electroreduction. The sample prepared in the solution with the C2H5OH/H2O volume ratio of 1:2 shows the best catalytic performance among the five samples and a current density of 0.214 A cm−2 is observed in 3.0 mol L−1 KOH + 0.5 mol L−1 H2O2 at −0.4 V (vs. Ag/AgCl KCl), which is much larger than that on the other metal oxides reported previously, almost comparable with the precious metals. This electrode of Co3O4 directly grown on Ni foam has superior mass transport property, which combining with its low-cost and facile preparation, make it a promising electrode for fuel cell using H2O2 as the oxidant. Abstract: Nanostructured Co x Ni1−x (OH)2 (x = 0, 0.053, 0.068, 0.116, 0.192) composites are synthesized via a simple template-free growth process onto nickel foam by using a mixed aqueous solution of nickel nitrate, cobalt nitrate and ammonia. Their structure and surface morphology are characterized by X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The SEM images show changes in the microstructure of β-Ni(OH)2 by the doping of cobalt. The effects of cobalt content on the electrochemical behaviors of β-Ni(OH)2 are investigated by cyclic voltammetries, galvanostatic charge/discharge and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results show that the Co0.116Ni0.884(OH)2 composite electrode exhibits a drastic improvement in the capacitive characteristics of β-Ni(OH)2 with a specific capacitance increase from 386.4 to 1082.6 F g−1 at a high discharging current density of 6 A g−1. This work suggests that the as-prepared Co0.116Ni0.884(OH)2 composite electrode has a promising future as higher charging/discharging rate materials for pseudo-supercapacitors. Abstract: Al-doped β-Ni(OH)2 nanosheets are prepared by a simple hydrothermal process onto nickel foam by using a mixed aqueous solution of nickel nitrate, aluminum nitrate and ammonia. Their structure and surface morphology are studied by using X-ray diffraction analysis, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The SEM images show changes in the microstructure of β-Ni(OH)2 by the addition of Al. The XRD results show that the α-phase Ni(OH)2 appeared by the addition of Al. The effects of Al content on the electrochemical behaviors of β-Ni(OH)2 are investigated by cyclic voltammetrys, galvanostatic charge/discharge and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results show a drastic improvement in the capacitive characteristics of β-Ni(OH)2 with a specific capacitance increase from 941.7 to 2122.6 F g−1 by the addition of just 3.4 mol% Al. Abstract: Carbon fiber cloth supported micro- and nano-structured Co electrode is prepared by a facile and fast square-wave electrodeposition method. The electrode is characterized by scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffractometer. Its electrocatalytic performance for hydrazine oxidation in alkaline media is investigated by means of cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Co is uniformly deposited on the carbon fiber surface and presents as nano-sheets and micro-particles intersected mutually. The nano-sheets have a thickness of around 250nm and the size of the micro-particles is up to around 10μm. Hydrazine electrooxidation on the electrode occurs via both direct and indirect pathways. The activation energy of the direct electrooxidation of hydrazine is 16.6kJmol−1 which is higher than that of the electrooxidation of hydrogen in the indirect pathway (9.9kJmol−1). Abstract: Nanostructured CuO with diverse morphology was directly grown on copper foam. Their supercapacitance performance was investigated and correlated with the morphology. CuO nanowires, nanosheets, and flower-like nanostructures were formed on copper foam which acts as both the substrate of CuO formation and the current collector of the electrode. Their morphology was examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy and their phase structure was analyzed by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy. The supercapacitance of the nanostructured CuO on copper foam was investigated by cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge/discharge measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Results showed that the specific capacitance of the nanostructured CuO strongly depends on its morphology and dimension. CuO nanosheets exhibited higher specific capacitance than nanowires and flower-like nanostructure. The specific capacitance of the CuO nanosheets reached 212Fg−1 at a current density of 0.41mAmg−1 in 6.0moldm−3 KOH electrolyte. The capacitance loss is around 15% after 850 charge/discharge cycles at 0.41mAmg−1 and the majority of capacitance loss occurred in the initial 50 cycles (8.1%). [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The growth of CuO nanosheet arrays on Cu foil was demonstrated. The morphology and structure of the CuO were examined by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy. The catalytic performance of the obtained CuO/Cu electrode for hydrogen peroxide electroreduction in 3.0moldm−3 KOH was evaluated by means of cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The CuO/Cu electrode shows an onset potential for H2O2 electroreduction comparable to Co3O4 nanowire arrays grown on Ni foam and around 100mV more negative than precious metal catalysts, such as Pt and Pd, demonstrating its good catalytic activity for H2O2 electroreduction. The stabilized mass current density for H2O2 electroreduction on the CuO/Cu electrode at −0.3V reached about 57% of that on Co3O4 nanowire arrays grown on nickel foam. Compared to conventional fuel cell electrodes fabricated by mixing active materials with conducting agents and polymer binders, this electrode of CuO nanosheet arrays directly grown on Cu has superior mass transport property, which combining with its low-cost and facile preparation, make it a promising electrode for fuel cell using H2O2 as the oxidant. Abstract: Co3O4 nanowire arrays freely standing on nickel foam are prepared via template-free growth followed by thermal treatment at 300°C in air. Their morphology is examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The electrochemical capacitance behavior of the self-supported binderless nanowire array electrode is investigated by cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge–discharge test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results show that nanowires are formed by nanoplatelets packed roughly layer by layer. They densely cover the nickel foam substrate and have diameters around 250nm and the lengths up to around 15μm. The Co3O4 nanowires display a specific capacitance of 746Fg−1 at a current density of 5mAcm−2. The capacitance loss is less than 15% after 500 charge–discharge cycles.
