Single‐atom catalysts (SACs) supported on inorganic materials have attracted much attention in numerous research fields for their high catalytic performance. However, such SACs have been limited by the low metal loading, especially on different types of inorganic supports. Herein, a general approach is presented for preparing SACs on metallic, metal oxide, and perovskite nanosheet (NS) supports to reach a high metal loading of up to 3.94 wt%, by utilizing N‐doped graphene as a sacrificial template that spatially confines the single atoms (SAs). Specifically, the target support material precursors are adsorbed onto the SAs‐stabilized sacrificial template, followed by subsequent heat treatment to transfer the SAs to the support material and to remove the graphene layer. Pt SAs on oxide support exhibits little to no aggregation throughout >10 000 min of annealing at 275 °C, demonstrating high thermal stability, as also supported by ex situ post‐anneal electron microscopy and X‐ray absorption fine structure studies. As a proof‐of‐concept, Pt SACs on SnO2 NSs exhibit high catalytic activity toward chemiresistive sensing of acetone gas (response = 95.4 at 10 ppm, 7.6‐fold enhancement compared with pristine SnO2 NSs) and unprecedented stability under highly humid conditions (27.4% response deterioration at 95% relative humidity). Nanostructuring has significantly contributed to alleviating the huge volume expansion problem of the Ge anodes. However, the practical use of nanostructured Ge anodes has been hindered due to several problems including a low tap density, poor scalability, and severe side reactions. Therefore, micrometer-sized Ge is desirable for practical use of Ge-based anode materials. Here, micronized Ge3N4 with a high tap density of 1.1 mg cm−2 has been successfully developed via a scalable wet oxidation and a subsequent nitridation process of commercially available micrometer-sized Ge as the starting material. The micronized Ge3N4 shows much-suppressed volume expansion compared to micrometer-sized Ge. After the carbon coating process, a thin carbon layer (≈3 nm) is uniformly coated on the micronized Ge3N4, which significantly improves electrical conductivity. As a result, micronized Ge3N4@C shows high reversible capacity of 924 mAh g−1 (2.1 mAh cm−2) with high mass loading of 3.5 mg cm−2 and retains 91% of initial capacity after 300 cycles at a rate of 0.5 C. Additionally, the effectiveness of Ge3N4@C as practical anodes is comprehensively demonstrated for the full cell, showing stable cycle retention and especially excellent rate capability, retaining 47% of its initial capacity at 0.2 C for 12 min discharge/charge condition. Abstract: Lithium–oxygen (Li–O2) batteries are considered as the most promising candidates owing to their higher theoretical energy density than other energy storage devices. However, the unfavorable structure of the air cathode has become a major cause of low performance for Li–O2 batteries, limiting their use in practical applications. To deal with this issue, the rational construction of porous air electrodes, where crucial reactions take place, is in high demand. Among the various dimensional materials, 1D nanomaterials have been frequently applied for air electrodes in several different forms, owing to their fascinating morphologies and unique characteristics. We present a focus review on the recent research relating to 1D nanomaterials adopted as air electrodes in Li–O2 cells. This paper gives the current issues surrounding Li–O2 cells, which are analyzed in terms of the efforts to apply the advantages of 1D nanomaterial electrodes for enhancing the electrochemical performance of the given cells. Collecting real-time breath humidity data is important for calibrating gas sensors from interfering signals in breath components, ultimately for accurately monitoring a patient's physiological information for applications in non-invasive and point-of-care diagnostics. In this work, atomically thin 2D metal oxide nanosheets (NSs) were synthesized by a liquid phase exfoliation process and their humidity sensing properties were investigated. Interestingly, Opposite humidity sensing responses (R D /R H) were observed between semiconducting oxide and metallic oxide NSs. For the semiconducting manganese (Mn) oxide NSs, decreasing resistance transitions were obtained with the response of 24.01 at 44.5% RH at low humidity levels (i.e., 6.1–45% RH), which was governed by proton (H+) conduction. On the other hand, the metallic ruthenium (Ru) oxide NSs exhibited increasing resistance transitions with the response of 0.28 at 96.3% RH at a high humidity range (i.e., 50–99.9% RH) as a result of proton trapping by accepting electrons upon the exposure to excess water molecules. Ru oxide NSs exhibited the response and recovery times of 68 sec and 8 sec, respectively, at 96.3% RH. Real-time breath humidity monitoring is demonstrated by integrating Ru oxide NSs with a wristband-type wireless sensing module, which can transmit the sensing data to a mobile device. Nanoscale structure engineering is in high demand for various applications of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). An edge‐exposed 2D polycrystalline MoS2 nanomesh thin film is demonstrated via block copolymer (BCP) nanopatterning. Molybdenum nanomesh structure is formed by direct metal deposition of hexagonal cylinder BCP nanotemplate and the following lift‐off process. Subsequent sulfurization of the molybdenum nanomesh creates MoS2 nanomesh thin films without any degradative etching step. The approach is applicable to not only other metal sulfides and oxides but also other nanoscale structures of TMD thin films including nanodot and nanowire array by means of various BCP nanotemplate shapes. As the edge site of MoS2 is highly active for NO2 sensing, the edge‐exposed MoS2 nanomesh demonstrates sevenfold enhancement of sensitivity for NO2 molecules compared to uniform thin film as well as superior reversibility even under 80% relative humidity environment. This structure engineering method could greatly strengthen the potential application of 2D TMD materials with the optimal customized nanoscale structures. Nanopatterning of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) is presented. By exploiting block copolymer nanotemplate, desired metal nanopattern, including nanomesh, nanodot, and nanowire arrays, can be readily obtained with large area. The post sulfurization process gives rise to nanopattered TMD. Silicon-coated molybdenum sulfide nanosheets were prepared in a thin-film shape (Si–MoS 2 TFs) through metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) and radio frequency (RF) sputtering. By using MOCVD, the MoS 2 thin films composed of nanosheets were vertically grown on stainless steel substrates. To address the problem of polysulfide dissolution and shuttling effect of MoS 2 during discharge and charge reactions in thin-film Li-ion batteries, the entire surfaces of MoS 2 TFs were covered with silicon layers using RF sputtering. Compared with pristine MoS 2 TFs without protection, the Si–MoS 2 TFs showed excellent reversibility with a high capacity of ∼2000 mAh g−1 for 500 cycles in thin-film Li-ion batteries. Both materials – MoS 2 and Si – were synergistically taken into account to enhance the ability to store Li ions in the host structures and complement each other during repeated conversion and alloying reactions. For the last two decades, nanostructured carbon materials have attracted significant attention, as they exhibit unusual physicochemical properties different from their bulk counterpart. Nevertheless, agglomeration and re-stacking of carbon nanostructures have always limited optimal performance, with larger loading amount. To solve this issue, porous and compressible carbon-based sponges have been researched, but most of the previously suggested carbon foams were either not very porous, synthesized at high temperature heat treatment, and/or not applicable for carbon nanoparticles. In this work, we have successfully fabricated ultra-porous (porosity about 98–99%), polyimide-carbon nanoparticle (PI–C) composites by combining Ketjen black nanoparticles with PI short fibers, by simple freeze-drying and subsequent heat treatments at low temperature (240 °C). Based on the analysis, it has been discovered that the fabricated PI-C sponges not only exhibit highly robust mechanical properties but also retain low thermal conductivity even in comparison with pristine PI sponges. This work provides a milestone in fabricating a number of C-electrospun polymeric sponges by freeze drying and subsequent heat treatments, which are expected to be utilized in various fields of research. Semiconducting metal oxides (SMOs) based gas sensors are inherently hampered by requirement of high working temperature because of their wide bandgaps. Consequently, there are remain challenges to utilize SMOs based gas sensors with regard to continuous gas monitoring platform with low power consumption. To address the inherent limitation, nitridation (i.e., N doping) of WO 3 NFs to WO x N y NFs was herein introduced for realization of low-temperature NO 2 sensing. Importantly, nitridation was conducted at intervals of 50 °C from 400 to 600 °C to adjust the degree of phase transition from semiconducting WO 3 to conductive WON phases. To further optimize the conductivity and improve the sensing characteristics, i.e., reduction of optimal operating temperature and enhancement of sensitivity, WO x N y NFs were functionalized with platinum (Pt) catalytic nanoparticles (NPs) by physical mixing. Pt NPs functionalized WO x N y NFs nitrided at 550 °C exhibited improved normalized resistance change and superior selectivity against C 2 H 5 OH, C 7 H 8 , CH 4 , CO, NH 3 , and NO at 50 °C. Abstract Increasing the specific capacity and cycle life of graphitic carbon anodes is crucial for realizing high-performance lithium ion batteries. Herein, we introduce a new class of graphitic carbon anodes comprising highly ordered three-dimensional nanostructures decorated with SnO 2 nanoparticles. The inch-scale, nanostructured graphitic carbon matrices are prepared by supported pyrolysis of epoxy templates patterned by advanced optical lithography. During the subsequent decoration process, the SnO 2 nanoparticles are densely formed on the matrix without agglomeration since the periodic nanostructured matrix provides a homogeneous site for nucleation and growth. The surface coverage of the decorated SnO 2 nanoparticles and the mass relative to the graphitic carbon are >80% and ∼50 wt%, respectively. The resulting nanostructured C/SnO 2 composite monoliths can be assembled solely into LIB coin cells without the aid of binders and conducting agents. The achieved specific capacity and retention are 692 mAh g−1 and 87.31% (at 70th cycle), respectively, which is superior to those of nanostructured carbon anodes prepared in a similar way. Lightweight and ultrathin materials with superior electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance are highly desirable for next-generation electronic devices. Herein, we fabricate a lightweight, thin, and flexible composite film, composed of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene and nanoparticles of Galinstan liquid metal, by simple vacuum-assisted filtration as a promising candidate for EMI shielding. The resultant composite film with highly conductive liquid metal between the MXene nano sheets exhibits enhanced electrical conductivity (4955 S cm−1), superior EMI shielding effectiveness (66.28 dB), and an absolute shielding effectiveness (15,029 dB cm2 g−1) at a thickness of 15 μm in the X-band (8.2–12.4 GHz) frequency range that is one of the highest among those of MXenes hybrid composites. In this work, highly porous WO 3 nanotubes (NTs) were synthesized by facile layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly on polymeric nanofiber (NF) templates followed by calcination. Polymeric NFs using poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were prepared by electrospinning as sacrificial templates. Then, ionic polymers were coated on PMMA to modify the surface charge of PMMA NFs. Catalyst-loaded WO 3 NTs were synthesized by self-assembly of tungsten precursor and catalytic precursor on the surface of the polymeric PMMA NFs followed by calcination at 500 °C for 1 h. Gas sensing performances were evaluated in highly humid atmosphere (90% RH) using pristine WO 3 NTs, Pt-loaded WO 3 NTs (Pt-WO 3 NTs), and Pd-loaded WO 3 NTs (Pd-WO 3 NTs). Pristine WO 3 NTs exhibited a high NO response ( R gas / R air = 63.59 at 5 ppm) at 350 °C and cross-selectivity toward toluene ( R air / R gas = 1.05 at 5 ppm). On the other hand, Pt-WO 3 NTs and Pd-WO 3 NTs exhibited a high toluene response ( R air / R gas = 2.24 for the Pt-WO 3 NTs and R air / R gas = 2.35 for the Pd-WO 3 NTs at 5 ppm) at 400 °C and a negligible NO response ( R gas / R air = 1.25 for the Pt-WO 3 NTs and R gas / R air = 1.04 for the Pd-WO 3 NTs at 5 ppm) at 400 °C. These results demonstrated that LbL synthesis is a highly promising method for producing hollow semiconductor metal oxide NTs functionalized with various catalysts, which leads to potential application in exhaled breath analysis for asthma and lung cancer diagnosis. Abstract: This work presents a simple and versatile route to produce macroporous p-type metal oxide thin films. Two-dimensional arrays of p-type NiO films with a hollow hemisphere structure were fabricated by colloidal templating and RF-sputtering followed by a subsequent heat treatment. The diameter and shell thickness of the NiO hemisphere were 800nm and 20nm, respectively. X-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy analysis indicate that the pure NiO phase with grain size of 10nm was obtained at calcination temperatures that exceeded 450°C. Close-packed arrays of hollow NiO hemispheres were found to exhibit p-type gas sensing properties against (CO, H2, C3H8, CH4, NO2, and C2H5OH), leading to significantly enhanced responses to C2H5OH (R gas /R air =5.0 at 200ppm). Carbon nanosheets (CNSs) have been used in various applications, ranging from energy storage to drug delivery. CNSs are conventionally synthesized by chemical vapor deposition, but their high cost and non-scalability prompted the development of alternative synthesis routes. More scalable methods such as the sol-gel process still suffer from its complicated synthetic steps with delicate conditions. Here, we demonstrate for the first time a unique top-down synthesis of CNSs from aronia fruit powder, which is simple, scalable, and cost-effective. Aronia-derived CNS can be fabricated at various heating temperatures (500, 700, and 900 °C) and under different atmospheres (N 2 /H 2 and NH 3), which can easily tune the overall physicochemical properties of the CNS. We evaluated the electrochemical performance of the CNS for potential applications in Li- and K-ion batteries, in which the CNS showed stable electrochemical performance even at a high current density (1000 mA g−1). Because of the high-throughput nature of this synthetic approach, the aronia-derived CNSs could be very useful in developing novel applications at an industrial scale.
