Locating distinct objects within a thick scattering medium remains a long-standing challenge in the fields of materials science, health, and engineering. Transmission Raman spectroscopy (TRS) with the use of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) nanoparticles has proven to be an effective approach to detect deep-seated lesions inside thick biological tissues. However, it has not yet been proven to spatially locate deep lesions in three dimensions using optical modalities. Herein, we present the concept of tomographic TRS and report its successful use for accurately locating SERS nanoparticles in elongated rod-like thick tissues. Our work starts with theoretical simulations of Raman photon propagation in tissues. We discovered a linear relationship between the Raman spectral peak ratio and propagation distance of Raman photons in tissues, allowing us to predict the location of lesions tagged by SERS NPs. Based on this, we propose a two-step tomographic TRS strategy, which includes axial scanning and ring scanning. We demonstrate the robustness of our approach using ex vivo thick tissue (4.5 cm in thickness) and locate an embedded SERS phantom lesion, with a ring scanning step of 10-30°. We successfully locate multiple SERS phantom lesions in the ex vivo porcine muscle stack with high accuracy (absolute error of <2 mm). Our method is rapid, efficient, and of low cost compared to current tomographic medical imaging techniques. This work advances Raman techniques for three-dimensional positioning and offers new insights toward practical diagnosis applications.

Patients with ALI (acute lung injury)/ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome) are often septic and with poor prognosis, which leads to a high mortality rate of 25-40%. Despite the advances in medicine, there are no effective pharmacological therapies for ALI/ARDS due to the short systemic circulation and poor specificity in the lungs. To address this problem, we prepared TP-loaded nanoparticles (TP-NPs) through the emulsification-and-evaporation method, and then the platelet membrane vesicles were extracted and coated onto the surface of the NPs to constitute the biomimetic PM@TP-NPs. In a LPS-induced ALI mouse model, PM@TP-NPs showed good biocompatibility and biosafety, which was evidenced by no significant toxic effect on cell viability and no hemolysis of red blood cells. In ALI mice, the PM@TP-NPs showed favorable anti-inflammation and enhanced therapeutic activity of TPs compared to the free drug. Administration of PM@TP-NPs effectively inhibited lung vascular injury, evidenced by the decreased lung vascular permeability, reduced pro-inflammatory cytokine burden, evidenced by decreased inflammatory cell (macrophages, neutrophils, etc .) infiltration in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and lung tissues, and inhibited the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines and NLRP3 inflammasome activation. ALI/ARDS is defined by damage to the alveolar epithelium and endothelium; thus, effective intervention targeting pulmonary vascular endothelial cells (VECs) is crucial for the treatment of respiratory diseases. For further determination of the targeting of PM cloaked NPs, healthy mice were also administered with the same NPs. Interestingly, the PM cloaked NPs only showed highly efficient targeting to the inflamed lungs and VECs, but no accumulation in healthy lungs and VECs. The data demonstrated that this biomimetic nanoplatform could be used as a potential strategy for personalized therapies in the treatment of inflammatory diseases, such as ALI/ARDS, and even COVID-19-associated pneumonia.

Non-invasive detection and precise localization of deep lesions have attracted significant attention for both fundamental and clinical studies. Optical modality techniques are promising with high sensitivity and molecular specificity, but are limited by shallow tissue penetration and the failure to accurately determine lesion depth. Here the authors report in vivo ratiometric surface-enhanced transmission Raman spectroscopy (SETRS) for non-invasive localization and perioperative surgery navigation of deep sentinel lymph nodes in live rats. The SETRS system uses ultrabright surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) nanoparticles with a low detection limit of 10 pM and a home-built photosafe transmission Raman spectroscopy setup. The ratiometric SETRS strategy is proposed based on the ratio of multiple Raman spectral peaks for obtaining lesion depth. Via this strategy, the depth of the phantom lesions in ex vivo rat tissues is precisely determined with a mean-absolute-percentage-error of 11.8%, and the accurate localization of a 6-mm-deep rat popliteal lymph node is achieved. The feasibility of ratiometric SETRS allows the successful perioperative navigation of in vivo lymph node biopsy surgery in live rats under clinically safe laser irradiance. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has attracted much attention in cancer treatment due to its tumor selectivity and noninvasive nature. Recent studies have demonstrated that PDT mediated reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in tumor microenvironment (TME) synergistically improves the efficacy of immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) therapy. However, the instability and short half-life of the ROS generated by PDT limit its clinical applications. Herein, a coassembled peptide hydrogel comprising two short peptides that contained the same assembly unit, Ce6-KKFKFEFEF (KEF-Ce6) and RRRRRRRR-KFKFEFEF (KEF-R8) is developed. When exposed to 635 nm laser irradiation, KEF-Ce6 released ROS, while KEF-R8 plays as nitric oxide (NO) donor. Subsequently, ROS reacts with NO to produce reactive nitrogen species (RNS). Both in vitro and in vivo experiments prove that converting ROS into more cytotoxic RNS caused intense cell death. Importantly, it is observed that tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) are polarized to proinflammatory types (M1-type) by the RNS-based PDT. The increase of M1 macrophages relieves the immunosuppressive situation in TME. Thus, when combined with αPD-L1 treatment, the survival time of tumor-bearing mice is prolonged. Radiotherapy suffers from its high-dose radiation-induced systemic toxicity and radioresistance caused by the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment. Immunotherapy using checkpoint blocking in solid tumors shows limited anticancer efficacy due to insufficient T-cell infiltration and inadequate systemic immune responses. Activation and guiding of irradiation by X-ray (AGuIX) nanoparticles with sizes below 5 nm have entered a phase III clinical trial as efficient radiosensitizers. This study aimed to develop a unique synergistic strategy based on AGuIX-mediated radiotherapy and immune checkpoint blockade to further improve the efficiency for B16 tumor therapy. AGuIX exacerbated radiation-induced DNA damage, cell cycle arrest, and apoptosis on B16 cells. More importantly, it could efficiently induce the immunogenic cell death of irradiated B16 tumor cells, and consequently trigger the maturation of dendritic cells and activation of systemic T-cell responses. Combining AGuIX-mediated radiotherapy with programmed cell death protein 1 blockade demonstrated excellent synergistic therapeutic effects in both bilateral and metastatic B16 tumor models, as indicated by a significant increase in the infiltration of effector CD8 + T cells and effective alleviation of the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment. Our findings indicate that the synergy between radiosensitization and immunomodulation provides a new and powerful therapy regimen to achieve durable antitumor T-cell responses, which is promising for cancer treatment.

Bacterial infection is a serious clinical threat. The misuse of antibiotics has already resulted in the emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains of pathogenic bacteria. Efficient membrane-destructive antibacterial agents are considered as an alternative, promising solution against bacterial infection. Herein, we prepared a new type of comb-like cationic, polyethylene glycol (PEG) block polycarbonates with polyquaternium arms (G-CgQAs). The amphiphilic G-CgQAs could self-assemble into about 60 nm sized nanoparticles (NPs) with positive charges (20~30 mV). G-CgQA-3 NPs with an appropriate hydrophobic-hydrophilic balance in the polyquaternium arms showed antibacterial activity against Gram-negative, Gram-positive, and drug-resistant strains at low concentrations (MIC 64-128 μg mL-1) and low hemolysis (HC50 > 2000 μg mL-1). In vivo anti-infection tests indicated G-CgQA-3 NPs could highly inhibit the growth of vancomycin-resistant bacteria by spraying on wounds. Collectively, G-CgQA NPs hold great promise for the prevention of infection, serving as new antibacterial agents. This study also highlights the significance of a hydrophobic block in positive polyquaternium arms to facilitate the antibacterial activity of cationic, quaternized polymers. The design of comb-like amphiphilic cationic polycarbonates provides a new method for manufacturing antibacterial nano-agents.

Conventional antimicrobials are becoming increasingly ineffective for treating bacterial infection due to the emergence of multi-drug resistant (MDR) pathogens. In addition, the biofilm-mode-of-growth of infecting bacteria impedes antimicrobial penetration in biofilms. Here, we report on poly(ethylene)glycol-poly(β-amino esters) (PEG-PAE) micelles with conjugated antimicrobials, that can uniquely penetrate biofilms, target themselves to bacterial cell surfaces once inside the low-pH environment of a biofilm and release conjugated antimicrobials through degradation of their ester-linkage with PAE by bacterial lipases. In vitro, PEG-PAE micelles with conjugated Triclosan (PEG-PAE-Triclosan) yielded no inadvertent leakage of their antimicrobial cargo and better killing of MDR Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and oral streptococcal biofilms than Triclosan in solution. In mice, PEG-PAE-Triclosan micelles with conjugated Triclosan yielded better eradication efficacy towards a MDR S. aureus-infection compared with Triclosan in solution and Triclosan-loaded micelles at equal Triclosan-equivalent concentrations. Ex vivo exposure of multi-species oral biofilms collected from orthodontic patients to PEG-PAE-Triclosan micelles, demonstrated effective bacterial killing at 30-40 fold lower Triclosan-equivalent concentrations than achieved by Triclosan in solution. Importantly, Streptococcus mutans, the main causative organism of dental caries, was preferentially killed by PEG-PAE-Triclosan micelles. Thus PEG-PAE-Triclosan micelles present a promising addendum to the decreasing armamentarium available to combat infection in diverse sites of the body. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: pH-adaptive polymeric micelles with conjugated antimicrobials can efficiently eradicate infectious biofilms from diverse body sites in mice and men. An antimicrobial was conjugated through an ester-linkage to a poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)/poly(β-amino ester) block copolymer to create micellar nanocarriers. Stable micelle structures were formed by the hydrophobic poly(β-amino ester) inner core and a hydrophilic PEG outer shell. Thus formed PEG-PAE-Triclosan micelles do not lose their antimicrobial cargo underway to an infection site through the blood circulation, but penetrate and accumulate in biofilms to release antimicrobials once inside a biofilm through degradation of its ester-linkage by bacterial lipases, to kill biofilm-embedded bacteria at lower antimicrobial concentrations than when applied in solution. PEG-PAE-Triclosan micelles effectively eradicate biofilms of multi-drug-resistant pathogens and oral bacteria, most notably highly cariogenic Streptococcus mutans, in mice and men respectively, and possess excellent clinical translation possibilities., (Copyright © 2018 Acta Materialia Inc. Recently, zwitterionic materials have been developed as alternatives to PEG for prolonging the circulation time of nanoparticles without triggering immune responses. However, zwitterionic coatings also hindered the interactions between nanoparticles and tumor cells, leading to less efficient uptake of nanoparticles by cancer cells. Such effect significantly limited the applications of zwitterionic materials for the purposes of drug delivery and the development to novel therapeutic agents. To overcome these issues, surface-adaptive mixed-shell micelles (MSMs) with poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) (PMPC)/poly(β-amino ester) (PAE) heterogeneous surfaces were constructed. Owing to the synergistic effect of zwitterionic coatings and micro-phase-separated surfaces, PMPC mixed-shell micelles exhibited the improved blood circulation time compared to single-PEG-shell micelles (PEGSMs) and single-PMPC-shell micelles (PMPCSMs). Moreover, such MSMs can convert their surface to positively charged ones in response to the acidic tumor microenvironment, leading to a significant enhancement in cellular uptake of MSMs by tumor cells. This strategy demonstrated a general approach to enhance the cellular uptake of zwitterionic nanoparticles without compromising their long circulating capability, providing a practical method for improving the tumor-targeting efficiency of particulate drug delivery systems., Statement of Significance: Herein we demonstrate a general strategy to integrate non-fouling zwitterionic surface on the nanoparticles without compromising their capability of tumor accumulation, by constructing a surface-adaptive mixed-shell micelles (MSMs) with poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) (PMPC)/poly(β-amino ester) (PAE) heterogeneous surfaces. At the blood pH (7.4), PAE chains collapsed to the inner of the shell due to the deprotonation, and the forming micro-phase separation structure was synergistic with zwitterionic surface to prolong the circulation time of MSMs in the blood. While at the tumor sites, PAE was protonated, and the positively charged surface of MSMs enhanced cellular uptake. Thermosensitive "micellar hydrogel" is prepared based on poly(ε-caprolactone-co- 1,4,8-trioxa[4.6]spiro-9-undecanone)-b-poly(ethylene glycol)- b-poly(ε-caprolactone- co-1,4,8-trioxa[4.6]spiro-9-undecanone) (PECT) triblock copolymer. Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) is adopted to explore its assembly (formation) and disassembly (degradation) mechanism within the range of 10 nm. Results prove that the thermosensitive non-covalent aggregation of micelles facilitates the hydrogel formation and the sustained shedding of cognate micelles induces the hydrogel degradation, during which polymers are steadily incorporated in micelles without any micelle disassembly or reassembly. It is confirmed that using multiple-tags based imaging technology, such as FRET imaging, the fate of macro biodegradable materials in vitro and in vivo can be followed at a precise nano even molecular level. Such an unique hydrogel composed of nothing more than PECT micelles can act as not only an injectable nanomedicine reservoir by subcutaneous or peri-tissue administration, but also an advanced "combo" macroscale platform for co-delivery of multi-modal therapeutic agents. Our findings also indicate that biological stimuli (e.g., temperature, enzymes)-induced non-covalent micelle self-assembly may provide us an effective strategy to prepare a macroscale device from nanoscale subunits., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Chemo-photodynamic combination therapy has been received widespread attention in cancer treatment due to its excellent characteristics, such as reducing the adverse side effects of chemo-drugs and improving the therapeutic effects for various cancers. In this study, RGD and DOX was conjugated to PEG by thiol-ene addition and Schiff's base reaction, respectively, to prepare the targeted and pH-sensitive antitumor prodrug nanoparticles (RGD-PEG-DOX NPs, RGD-NPs). Subsequently, the photosensitizer chlorin e6 (Ce6) was encapsulated into RGD-NPs, thus obtaining a simple and efficient chemo-photodynamic combination platform (RGD-PEG-DOX/Ce6 NPs, RGD-NPs/Ce6). This nanoparticle possessed high drug loading property of both the chemo-drug and photosensitizer and could simultaneously release them under the mild acidic microenvironment of cancer cells, which was expected to realize the synchronization therapy of chemotherapy and photodynamic therapy (PDT). Compared with free DOX and Ce6, RGD-NPs/Ce6 could significantly improve the cellular uptake capacities of DOX and Ce6, resulting in the increased contents of ROS in cancer cells and effective cytotoxicity for tumor cells (MDA-MB-231 cells and MCF-7 cells) upon a laser radiation. The in vivo experiment showed that RGD-NPs/Ce6 displayed superior tumor targeting, accumulation, and retention ability than the other groups (free DOX, free Ce6 and NPs/Ce6), and thus significantly enhancing the antitumor effect in vivo with a laser radiation. In addition, the cardiotoxicity induced by DOX was thoroughly wiped out after being loaded and delivered by the nanoparticles according to the pathological analysis. Therefore, the targeted chemo-photodynamic combination therapeutic platform may be a promising candidate for enhanced cancer therapy.

Unlabelled: Nanomedicines have emerged as indispensable platforms for cancer theranostics, however, the therapeutic outcomes were often compromised not only by the multiple biological barriers during the itinerary from the initial injection site to the intracellular action site but also the insufficient drug release at the pathological site. Herein, novel bioreducible double head agent, combining reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer agent and ring opening polymerization initiator through disulfide linkage, was firstly prepared. Well-defined cRGDfK-polycarboxybetaine methacrylate-SS-polycaprolactone block copolymers (termed as cRGD-PCSSL) were facilely synthesized using this initiator. Subsequently, shell sheddable and drug-encapsulated zwitterionic nanoparticles were constructed by one-step self-assembly with doxorubicin (DOX) (termed as cRGD-PCSSL/DOX NPs). The reduction-responsive shedding of PCB shells resulted in the rapid loss of cRGD-PCSSL/DOX NPs stability in the presence of glutathione, facilitating the rapid DOX release. Results of flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy demonstrated that cRGD-PCSSL/DOX NPs could be internalized by HepG2 cells via receptor-mediated endocytosis with fast intracellular drug release, leading to considerable cytotoxicity in comparison with free DOX. Importantly, the low protein adsorption and excellent serum stability properties of cRGD-PCSSL/DOX NPs translated into prolonged systemic circulation and enhanced tumor accumulation. Furthermore, intravenous injection of cRGD-PCSSL/DOX NPs in tumor-bearing mice exhibited significantly higher antitumor efficiency and lower systemic toxicity compared to free DOX. Consequently, the novel zwitterionic NPs, which facilely overcome the dilemma between multifunctionality and complexity by programmatically circumventing the multiple biological barriers, would represent a promising platform for enhanced anticancer drug delivery., Statement of Significance: Herein, novel bioreducible RAFT and ROP double-head agent was first reported for the synthesis of cRGDfK-polycarboxybetaine methacrylate-SS-polycaprolactone zwitterionic block copolymers (cRGD-PCB-SS-PCL, termed as cRGD-PCSSL) through controllable polymerization methods. Firstly, this synthetic route surmounted the major disadvantage of most current used methods, which required thiol exchange reaction between active disulfide bond and free thiol groups at the chain ends. Secondly, the prepared cRGD-PCSSL/DOX NPs reasonably integrated cRGD for active tumor targeting and receptor-mediated endocytosis, zwitterionic PCB with nonfouling property for prolonged systemic circulation, disulfide linkage for reduction-responsive drug release, biodegradable PCL for hydrophobic anticancer drug loading. Ample attention has focused on cancer drug delivery via prodrug nanoparticles due to their high drug loading property and comparatively lower side effects. In this study, we designed a PEG-DOX-Cur prodrug nanoparticle for simultaneous delivery of doxorubicin (DOX) and curcumin (Cur) as a combination therapy to treat cancer. DOX was conjugated to PEG by Schiff's base reaction. The obtained prodrug conjugate could self-assemble in water at pH 7.4 into nanoparticles (PEG-DOX NPs) and encapsulate Cur into the core through hydrophobic interaction (PEG-DOX-Cur NPs). When the PEG-DOX-Cur NPs are internalized by tumor cells, the Schiff's base linker between PEG and DOX would break in the acidic environment that is often observed in tumors, causing disassembling of the PEG-DOX-Cur NPs and releasing both DOX and Cur into the nuclei and cytoplasma of the tumor cells, respectively. Compared with free DOX, free Cur, free DOX-Cur combination, or PEG-DOX NPs, PEG-DOX-Cur NPs exhibited higher anti-tumor activity in vitro. In addition, the PEG-DOX-Cur NPs also showed prolonged blood circulation time, elevated local drug accumulation and increased tumor penetration. Enhanced anti-tumor activity was also observed from the PEG-DOX-Cur-treated animals, demonstrating better tumor inhibitory property of the NPs. Thus, the PEG-DOX-Cur prodrug nanoparticle system provides a simple yet efficient approach of drug delivery for chemotherapy.

Self-assembled prodrug nanoparticles have demonstrated great promise in cancer chemotherapy. In the present study, we developed a new kind of prodrug nanoparticles for targeted drug delivery. PEGylated doxorubicin conjugate with an acid-cleavable cis-aconityl spacer was prepared. Then it was functionalized with a tumor-penetrating peptide, Cys-Arg-Gly-Asp-Lys (CRGDK), providing the prodrug nanoparticles with the specific binding ability to neurophilin-1 receptor. In acid mediums, doxorubicin could be released from the prodrug nanoparticles with an accumulative release around 60% through the acid-triggered hydrolysis of cis-aconityl bond and nanoparticle disassembly. Whereas, drug release was slow under a neutral pH and the accumulative drug release was less than 16%. In the cell culture tests, our prodrug nanoparticles showed enhanced endocytosis and cytotoxicity in cancer cells including HepG2, MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells, but lower cytotoxicity in human cardiomyocyte H2C9. In the animal experiments, the prodrug nanoparticles were intravenously injected into Balb/c nude mice bearing MDA-MB-231 tumors. Enhanced drug penetration and accumulation in tumors, accompanying with a rapid early tumor-binding behavior, was observed after intravenous injection of the peptide modified prodrug nanoparticles. The optimal structure design of nanocarriers to inhibit premature release of anticancer drugs from nanocarriers during blood circulation and improve drug release inside tumor cells is still a significant issue for polymer micelles applied to antitumor drug delivery. Herein, in order to balance the contradiction between polymer micellar stability and drug release, dual-sensitive cleavable cross-linkages of benzoic imine conjugated disulfide bonds were introduced into the core of the amphiphilic copolymer micelles to form core-cross-linked micelles. First, biodegradable poly(ethylene glycol)-b-(polycaprolactone-g-poly(methacrylic acid-p-hydroxy benzaldehyde-cystamine)), i.e. mPEG-b-(PCL-g-P(MAA-Hy-Cys)) (PECMHC) copolymers were synthesized and assembled into PECMHC micelles (PECMHC Ms). Then, simply by introducing H2O2 to the PECMHC Ms dispersions to oxidate the thiol groups of cystamine moieties in the core, core-cross-linked PECMHC micelles (cc-PECMHC Ms) ∼100 nm in size were readily obtained in water. In vitro studies of doxorubicin (DOX)-loaded cc-PECMHC Ms show that the cross-linked core impeded the drug release in the physical conditions, owing to the high stability of the micelles against both extensive dilution and salt concentration, while it greatly accelerated DOX release in mildly acidic (pH ∼5.0-6.0) medium with glutathione, owing to the coordination of the pH-sensitive cleaving of benzoic imine bonds and the reduction-sensitive cleaving of disulfide bonds. The in vivo tissue distribution and tumor accumulation of the DOX-loaded cc-PECMHC Ms were monitored via fluorescence images of DOX. DOX-loaded cc-PECMHC Ms exhibited enhanced tumor accumulation because of their high stability in blood circulation and less DOX premature release. Therefore, the cc-PECMHC Ms with dual-sensitive cleavable bonds in the cross-linked core were of excellent biocompatibility, high extracellular stability and had intelligent intracellular drug release properties, indicating promise as candidates for anticancer drug delivery., (Copyright © 2014 Acta Materialia Inc. Exploring ideal nanocarriers for drug delivery systems has encountered unavoidable hurdles, especially the conflict between enhanced cellular uptake and prolonged blood circulation, which have determined the final efficacy of cancer therapy. Here, based on controlled self-assembly, surface structure variation in response to external environment was constructed toward overcoming the conflict. A novel micelle with mixed shell of hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) PEG and pH responsive hydrophobic poly(β-amino ester) (PAE) was designed through the self-assembly of diblock amphiphilic copolymers. To avoid the accelerated clearance from blood circulation caused by the surface exposed targeting group c(RGDfK), here c(RGDfK) was conjugated to the hydrophobic PAE and hidden in the shell of PEG at pH 7.4. At tumor pH, charge conversion occurred, and c(RGDfK) stretched out of the shell, leading to facilitated cellular internalization according to the HepG2 cell uptake experiments. Meanwhile, the heterogeneous surface structure endowed the micelle with prolonged blood circulation. With the self-regulated multifunctional collaborated properties of enhanced cellular uptake and prolonged blood circulation, successful inhibition of tumor growth was achieved from the demonstration in a tumor-bearing mice model. This novel nanocarrier could be a promising candidate in future clinical experiments.

Formaldehyde (HCHO) is the main source of indoor air pollutant. HCHO sensors are therefore of paramount importance for timely detection in daily life. However, existing sensors do not meet the stringent performance targets, while deactivation due to sensing detection at room temperature, for example, at extremely low concentration of formaldehyde (especially lower than 0.08 ppm), is a widely unsolved problem. Herein, we present the Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) sensitized dispersed In2O3 nanograin via a low-fabrication-cost hydrothermal strategy, where the Ag NPs reduces the apparent activation energy for HCHO transporting into and out of the In2O3 nanoparticles, while low concentrations detection at low working temperature is realized. The pristine In2O3 exhibits a sluggish response (Ra/Rg = 4.14 to 10 ppm) with incomplete recovery to HCHO gas. After Ag functionalization, the 5%Ag-In2O3 sensor shows a dramatically enhanced response (135) with a short response time (102 s) and recovery time (157 s) to 1 ppm HCHO gas at 30 °C, which benefits from the Ag NPs that electronically and chemically sensitize the crystal In2O3 nanograin, greatly enhancing the selectivity and sensitivity. In our contemporary society, addressing the increasingly pressing global resource shortage, particularly the scarcity of vital water resources and energy, is critical for human survival. This paper presents a strategy that integrates PAA grafting, ion exchange, and in-situ chemical reactions to synthesize photothermal materials for enhanced solar-driven interfacial evaporation and gradient materials for electricity generation, respectively. The obtained photothermal material demonstrates exceptional light absorption and photothermal conversion performance. By employing a unique combination of unidirectional flow and suspension mode for water evaporation, remarkable evaporation rates are achieved, with all samples exceeding 2.03 kg m-2h−1. The hybrid mode is also applied to saltwater treatment, where it is found that the evaporation rate is not significantly affected, regardless of the salt concentration. No change in the evaporation rate is observed even after 12 h of continuous treatment with 10 % brine, indicating the robustness and stable performance of the evaporative materials. For the synthesized gradient materials, the flowing fluid can establish a potential difference at both ends of the gradient fabric. The magnitude of open circuit voltage and short circuit current can be controlled by adjusting the measurement distance, the deposited nanoparticles with different polarity and the amount of charge carried. We acquire a maximum output of 209.7 mV using the gradient Cu-S/PAA-cotton fabric, which can be connected in series to power small electronic devices like a digital watch. This research not only advances the design and practical application of high-performance solar evaporators but also illuminates a novel pathway for developing electricity-generating materials. In this work, a series of molecular imprinted Ag-LaFeO 3 nanoparticles (IAL NPs) were synthesized in a microwave-assisted colloidal route. Especially, the one prepared with optimal amount of imprint molecules (IAL-2 NPs) have a response of 24.0 to 5 ppm toluene at the optimum working temperature of 215 °C with negligible responses to the other test gases, exhibiting enhanced gas sensing properties for toluene gas at a relatively low working temperature. • In 2 O 3 hollow porous nanospheres were synthesized by a convenient method which can be extended to other gas sensor materials. • 5wt%Ag-In 2 O 3 HPNSs sensor can detect triethylamine gas down to 0.1 ppm. • The gas sensing mechanism of 5wt%Ag-In 2 O 3 HPNSs is discussed. Triethylamine (TEA) is a volatile organic compound (VOC) that is detrimental to production safety, environment , and human health. It is necessary to prepare a gas sensor with high sensitivity and selectivity for real-time monitoring of TEA. Here, In 2 O 3 hollow porous nanospheres (HPNSs) loaded with Ag nanoparticles were prepared and the sensing properties to TEA were researched. The 5wt%Ag-In 2 O 3 gas sensor exhibited high sensitivity (20,059 to 100 ppm), low concentration detection (6.11 to 0.1 ppm), extremely good selectivity , and stability to TEA at 350 °C. Our work highlights the potential of using metal-organic frameworks as a precursor to prepare In 2 O 3 hollow porous nanospheres combined with the catalysis of Ag for TEA gas detection. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are promising for catalysis, adsorption, separation, etc. owing to unprecedented combination of the large surface area, high crystallinity, tunable pore size, and unique molecular architecture of COFs. Just because of the above-mentioned merits, COFs can be ideal support for quite a few kinds of small materials with unstable nature, such as nanoparticles, ions, quantum dots, single atoms and so on. With COF support, those species can not only exist stably, but also readily be applied in various fields. Herein, the recent advances in the design and synthesis of COF-support hybrids for various applications are presented. Also, future research directions and perspectives are discussed for the development of efficient COF-support hybrid materials. [Display omitted] • One-step synthesis of rice grains Sm 2 O 3 /SmFeO 3 nanoparticles by precipitation. • Excellent selectivity for HCHO. • The gas sensing performance of Sm 2 O 3 /SmFeO 3 to formaldehyde was investigated for the first time. • The rice grains Sm 2 O 3 /SmFeO 3 nanoparticles sensor is well suited for detecting low concentration formaldehyde. In this study, rice-grain Sm 2 O 3 /SmFeO 3 nanoparticles were fabricated by a convenient precipitation method. In addition, the structure and morphology of the Sm 2 O 3 /SmFeO 3 nanoparticles were characterized by XRD, BET, SEM, and TEM. The XRD patterns reveal that diffraction peaks of Sm 2 O 3 /SmFeO 3 nanoparticles are in excellent agreement with those of SmFeO 3 and Sm 2 O 3. By using the Debye–Scherrer equation, the average grain size of the rice-grain particles of the sample was calculated to be 23.4 nm. BET showed that the material has a larger specific surface area. SEM and TEM results indicate that the material comprises millet rice-grains. The resulting Sm 2 O 3 /SmFeO 3 -based sensor exhibited good sensitivity performance, with excellent selectivity for formaldehyde gas. At the optimum work temperature (190 °C), the response value, response time, and recovery time for 10 ppm formaldehyde were 44, 111 s, and 102 s, respectively. These results reveal that rice-grain Sm 2 O 3 /SmFeO 3 material demonstrates promise as a formaldehyde-gas-sensitive material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
