Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) spectroscopy of metallic nanoparticles is a powerful technique for chemical and biological sensing experiments. Moreover, the LSPR is responsible for the electromagnetic-field enhancement that leads to surface-enhanced Ranian scattering (SERS) and other surface-enhanced spectroscopic processes. This review describes recent fundamental spectroscopic studies that reveal key relationships governing the LSPR spectral location and its sensitivity to the local environment, including nanoparticle shape and size. We also describe studies on the distance dependence of the enhanced electromagnetic field and the relationship between the plasmon resonance and the Raman excitation energy. Lastly, we introduce a new form of LSPR spectroscopy, involving the coupling between nanoparticle plasmon resonances and adsorbate molecular resonances. The results from these fundamental studies guide the design of new sensing experiments, illustrated through applications in which researchers use both LSPR wavelength-shift sensing and SERS to detect molecules of chemical and biological relevance. Surface-enhanced spatially offset Raman spectroscopy (SESORS) is a label-free vibrational spectroscopy that has the potential for in vivo imaging. Previous SESORS experiments have been limited to acquiring spectra using SERS substrates implanted under the skin or from nanoparticles embedded in tissue. Here we present SESORS measurements of SERS active nanoparticles coated with a Raman reporter molecule (nanotags) acquired, for the first time, through bone. We demonstrate the ability of SESORS to measure spectra through various thicknesses (3-8 mm) of bone. We also show that diluted nanotag samples (~2 × 1012 particles) can be detected through the bone. We apply a least-squares support vector machine analysis to demonstrate quantitative detection. It is anticipated that these through-bone SESORS measurements will enable real-time, non-invasive spectroscopic measurement of neurochemicals through the skull, as well as other biomedical applications. Single-particle tracking experiments were carried out with gold nanoparticle-labeled solid supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) containing increasing concentrations of ganglioside (GM1). The negatively charged nanoparticles electrostatically associate with a small percentage of positively charged lipids (ethyl phosphatidylcholine) in the bilayers. The samples containing no GM1 show random diffusion in 92% of the particles examined with a diffusion constant of 4.3(±4.5) × 10-9 cm2/s. In contrast, samples containing 14% GM1 showed a mixture of particles displaying both random and confined diffusion, with the majority of particles, 62%, showing confined diffusion. Control experiments support the notion that the nanoparticles are not associating with the GM1 moieties but instead most likely confined to regions in between the GM1 clusters. Analysis of the root-mean-squared displacement plots for all of the data reveals decreasing trends in the confined diffusion constant and diameter of the confining region versus increasing GM1 concentration. In addition, a linearly decreasing trend is observed for the percentage of randomly diffusing particles versus GM1 concentration, which offers a simple, direct way to measure the percolation threshold for this system, which has not previously been measured. The percolation threshold is found to be 22% GM1 and the confining diameter at the percolation threshold only ~50 nm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Electron emission from single, supported Ag nanocubes excited with ultrafast laser pulses (λ = 800 nm) is studied via spatial and polarization correlated (i) dark field scattering microscopy (DFM), (ii) scanning photoionization microscopy (SPIM), and (iii) high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Laser-induced electron emission is found to peak for laser polarization aligned with cube diagonals, suggesting the critical influence of plasmonic near-field enhancement of the incident electric field on the overall electron yield. For laser pulses with photon energy below the metal work function, coherent multiphoton photoelectron emission (MPPE) is identified as the most probable mechanism responsible for electron emission from Ag nanocubes and likely metal nanoparticles/surfaces in general. This work characterizes the adsorption, structure, and binding mechanism of oxygenated organic species from cyclohexane solution at the liquid/solid interface of optically flat alumina-supported palladium nanoparticle surfaces prepared by atomic layer deposition (ALD). The surface-specific nonlinear optical vibrational spectroscopy, sum-frequency generation (SFG), was used as a probe for adsorption and interfacial molecular structure. 1-Hexanoic acid is an overoxidation product and possible catalyst poison for the aerobic heterogeneous oxidation of 1-hexanol at the liquid/solid interface of Pd/Al2O3 catalysts. Single component and competitive adsorption experiments show that 1-hexanoic acid adsorbs to both ALD-prepared alumina surfaces and alumina surfaces with palladium nanoparticles, that were also prepared by ALD, more strongly than does 1-hexanol. Furthermore, 1-hexanoic acid adsorbs with conformational order on ALD-prepared alumina surfaces, but on surfaces with palladium particles the adsorbates exhibit relative disorder at low surface coverage and become more ordered, on average, at higher surface coverage. Although significant differences in binding constant were not observed between surfaces with and without palladium nanoparticles, the palladium particles play an apparent role in controlling adsorbate structures. The disordered adsorption of 1-hexanoic acid most likely occurs on the alumina support, and probably results from modification of binding sites on the alumina, adjacent to the particles. In addition to providing insight on the possibility of catalyst poisoning by the overoxidation product and characterizing changes in its structure that result in only small adsorption energy changes, this work represents a step toward using surface science techniques that bridge the complexity gap between fundamental studies and realistic catalyst models. Understanding the detailed relationship between nanoparticle structure and activity remains a significant challenge for the field of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. To this end, the structural and optical properties of individual plasmonic nanoantennas comprised of Au nanoparticle assemblies that are coated with organic reporter molecules and encapsulated by a Si02 shell have been determined using correlated transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dark-field Rayleigh scattering microscopy, surfaceenhanced Raman scattering (SERS) microscopy, and finite element method (FEM) calculations. The distribution of SERS enhancement factors (EFs) for a structurally and optically diverse set of nanoantennas is remarkably narrow. For a collection of 30 individual nanoantennas ranging from dimers to heptamers, the EFs vary by less than 2 orders of magnitude. Furthermore, the EFs for the hot-spot-containing nanoparticles are uncorrelated to aggregation state and localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) wavelength but are crucially dependent on the size of the interparticle gap. This study demonstrates that the creation of hot spots, where two particles are in subnanometer proximity or have coalesced to form crevices, is paramount to achieving maximum SERS enhancements. Finite element method calculations were carried out to determine extinction spectra and the electromagnetic (EM) contributions to surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) for 90-nm Au nanoparticle dimers modeled after experimental nanotags. The calculations revealed that the EM properties depend significantly on the junction region, specifically the distance between the nanoparticles for spacings of less than 1 nm. For extinction spectra, spacings below 1 nm lead to maxima that are strongly red-shifted from the 600-nm plasmon maximum associated with an isolated nanoparticle. This result agrees qualitatively well with experimental transmission electron microscopy images and localized surface plasmon resonance spectra that are also presented. The calculations further revealed that spacings below 0.5 nm, and especially a slight fusing of the nanoparticles to give tiny crevices, leads to EM enhancements of 1010 or greater. Assuming a uniform coating of SERS molecules around both nanoparticles, we determined that regardless of the separation, the highest EM fields always dominate the SERS signal. Recent developments have greatly improved the sensitivity of optical sensors based on metal nanoparticle arrays and single nanoparticles. We introduce the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) sensor and describe how its exquisite sensitivity to size, shape and environment can be harnessed to detect molecular binding events and changes in molecular conformation. We then describe recent progress in three areas representing the most significant challenges: pushing sensitivity towards the single-molecule detection limit, combining LSPR with complementary molecular identification techniques such as surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, and practical development of sensors and instrumentation for routine use and high-throughput detection. This review highlights several exceptionally promising research directions and discusses how diverse applications of plasmonic nanoparticles can be integrated in the near future. The existence of single-molecule surface-enhanced Rarnan spectroscopy (SMSERS) is proven by employing a frequency-domain approach. This is demonstrated using two isotopologues of Rhodamine 6G that offer unique vibrational signatures. When an average of one molecule was adsorbed per silver nanoparticle, only one isotopologue was typically observed under dry N2 environment. Additionally, the distribution of vibrational frequencies hidden under the ensemble average is revealed by examining the single-molecule spectra. Correlation with transmission electron microscopy reveals that SMSERS active aggregates are composed of multiple randomly sized and shaped nanoparticles. At higher coverage and in a humid environment, adsorbate interchange was detected. Using 2D cross correlation, vibrational modes from different isotopologues were anti-correlated, indicating that the dynamic behavior was from multiple molecules competing for a single hot spot. The peak location of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of noble metal nanoparticles is highly dependent upon the refractive index of the nanoparticles' surrounding environment. In this study, new phenomena are revealed by exploring the influence of interacting molecular resonances and nanoparticle resonances. The LSPR peak shift and line shape induced by a resonant molecule vary with wavelength. In most instances, the oscillatory dependence of the peak shift on wavelength tracks with the wavelength dependence of the real part of the refractive index, as determined by a Kramers-Kronig transformation of the molecular resonance absorption spectrum. A quantitative assessment of this shift based on discrete dipole approximation calculations shows that the Kramers-Kronig index must be scaled in order to match experiment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
