Monolithic aerogels composed of crystalline nanoparticles enable photocatalysis in three dimensions, but they suffer from low mechanical stability and it is difficult to produce them with complex geometries. Here, an approach to control the geometry of the photocatalysts to optimize their photocatalytic performance by introducing carefully designed 3D printed polymeric scaffolds into the aerogel monoliths is reported. This allows to systematically study and improve fundamental parameters in gas phase photocatalysis, such as the gas flow through and the ultraviolet light penetration into the aerogel and to customize its geometric shape to a continuous gas flow reactor. Using photocatalytic methanol reforming as a model reaction, it is shown that the optimization of these parameters leads to an increase of the hydrogen production rate by a factor of three from 400 to 1200 µmol g -1 h -1 . The rigid scaffolds also enhance the mechanical stability of the aerogels, lowering the number of rejects during synthesis and facilitating handling during operation. The combination of nanoparticle-based aerogels with 3D printed polymeric scaffolds opens up new opportunities to tailor the geometry of the photocatalysts for the photocatalytic reaction and for the reactor to maximize overall performance without necessarily changing the material composition., (© 2021 The Authors. Luminescent nanoparticles are researched for their potential impact in medical science, but no materials approved for parenteral use have been available so far. To overcome this issue, we demonstrate that Eu3+-doped hafnium dioxide nanocrystals can be used as non-toxic, highly stable probes for cellular optical imaging and as radiosensitive materials for clinical treatment. Furthermore, viability and biocompatibility tests on artificially stressed cell cultures reveal their ability to buffer reactive oxygen species, proposing an anti-cytotoxic feature interesting for biomedical applications.

A detailed study is presented on the formation of MoO(2) nanoparticles from the dissolution of the precursor to the final rodlike product, with a focus on the exploration of the inorganic reaction occurring ahead of the nucleation step, and interplay between size and crystal structure of MoO(2). In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy experiments show that the crystallization and the growth process of MoO(2) nanorods is initiated by rapid reduction of the MoO(2) Cl(2) precursor in benzyl alcohol and acetophenone. This reaction triggers the nucleation of 2 nm MoO(2) particles with spherical shape and hexagonal crystal structure. The transformation from spheres into rods emerges as a complex process driven by oriented attachment. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction results provide evidence that the 2 nm particles first aggregate into 5-20 nm-large oriented assemblies. The increase in particle size induces the phase transition from hexagonal to the less symmetrical monoclinic crystal structure, and finally the transformation into rods. Is it shown that electrodes for lithium-ion batteries based on MoO(2) nanorods have a long-term cycling life. Hard and brittle monolithic tungsten oxide-polybenzylene nanohybrids can be obtained in one step by reacting tungsten iso-propoxide with benzyl alcohol. In a first step, crystalline tungsten oxide W(18)O(49) nanowires with a diameter of about 1.5 nm form via ether elimination reaction. Subsequently, the large residue of the benzyl alcohol is transformed to dibenzyl ether, which then polymerizes to polybenzylene, incorporating the nanoparticles into the forming polymer. The catalytic effect of the tungsten oxide nanowires on the quantitative formation of polybenzylene is proven by reacting them in different concentrations and at varying temperatures either with benzyl alcohol or with dibenzyl ether. Complete polymerization of benzyl alcohol is achieved within just 30 min by using a particle-to-monomer molar ratio of 1:115 at 160 degrees C. Lower reaction temperatures (100-130 degrees C) or higher ratios (1:340 and 1:680) prolong the reaction time to several hours. Further studies show that the tungsten oxide nanoparticles are able to completely polymerize various other alcohols with an aryl methanol group.

A successful strategy to obtain self-supporting (100 microm), UV-absorbing, and, in the visible region, highly transparent TiO2-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films was developed. The 15 nm large anatase TiO2 nanocrystals were prepared in a nonaqueous sol-gel approach involving the mixing of Ti(O(i)Pr)4 and benzyl alcohol. The surfaces of the resulting particles were modified with minute amounts of organic ligands in order to make the particles easily dispersible in nonpolar media like xylene and dichloromethane and compatible with PMMA, a polymer of high optical transparency and considerable technical importance. The empirical optimization process of composite fabrication was supplemented by fundamental studies of the crystallization and growth mechanism of anatase particles in a nonaqueous medium. After the preparation of corresponding nanocomposites, the materials were investigated with respect to their UV absorption capability, optical transparency in the visible-wavelength region, and photodegradation.

A general nonaqueous route for the synthesis of phase-pure transition-metal niobate (InNbO(4), MnNb(2)O(6), and YNbO(4)) nanocrystals was developed based on the one-pot solvothermal reaction of niobium chloride and the corresponding transition-metal acetylacetonates in benzyl alcohol at 200 degrees C. All samples were carefully characterized by XRD, TEM, HRTEM, and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. The crystallization mechanism of these niobate nanocrystals points to a two-step pathway. First, metal hydroxide crystals and amorphous niobium oxide are formed. Second, metal niobate nanocrystals are generated from the intermediates by a dissolution-recrystallization mechanism. The reaction mechanisms, that is, the processes responsible for the oxygen supply for oxide formation, were found to be rather complex and involve niobium-mediated ether elimination as the main pathway, accompanied by solvolysis of the acetylacetonate ligands and benzylation reactions.

Highly crystalline metal oxide nanoparticles such as CoO, ZnO, Fe(3)O(4), MnO, Mn(3)O(4), and BaTiO(3) were synthesized in just a few minutes by reacting metal alkoxides, acetates or acetylacetonates with benzyl alcohol under microwave heating.

Abstract: Fine powder of iron oxide has been required in the preparation of ferromagnetic α″-Fe16N2 powder in low temperature nitridation. Magnetite and maghemite mixture was obtained by the reaction of iron acetylacetonate Fe(acac)3 in benzyl alcohol. It was reduced to α-Fe in hydrogen at 400°C. Particle size of the α-Fe was 300nm in the reduction of iron oxides obtained from 2g of Fe(acac)3. It decreased to 100nm in the preparation using 8g of Fe(acac)3. After the successive nitridation under ammonia flow at 160°C, the highest yield of α″-Fe16N2 in 66wt.% was observed on the nitrided product from the latter α-Fe, because of the smallest α-Fe particle size after the reduction in the present study. The yield and reproducibility of α″-Fe16N2 formation in low temperature nitridation was improved using the iron oxide prepared in non-aqueous benzyl alcohol compared to the use of magnetite obtained from aqueous solution.
