Abstract: The surface of nanostructured silicon (porous silicon) was biofunctionalized by the deposition of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane from solution, leading to high density of amine groups covering the surface which would promote the further immobilization of biomolecules. In addition, porous silicon Bragg reflectors were developed for their use in the visible range. The optical behavior of these structures was previously designed by the use of a computational program, from which the optical constants and thickness of the individual porous silicon layers were determined. The possibility of using these structures as biosensors has been explored, based on the significant changes in the reflectance spectra before and after exposing the porous silicon optical structures to biomolecules. In particular, it is shown that there is a notable shift of the reflectance maximum associated to the Bragg reflector after immobilization of polyclonal mouse antibodies. Thus, the experimental results open the possibility of developing biosensors based on the variation of the position of the optical spectrum of porous silicon based devices. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The particular structure of porous silicon (PS), which can be described as an amorphous matrix in which silicon nanocrystals are embedded, makes this material very suitable for its use in many different fields, including optoelectronics and biological applications. In the present work, Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS) measurements and optical characterization are carried out on PS layers in order to determine their in-depth compositional profile, homogeneity, porosity, oxidation degree and overall optical behavior. The experimental results show quite good in-depth homogeneity of the PS layers since only slight porosity and oxidation degree gradients have been observed, further supported by optical measurements. Additionally, RBS measurements were used to confirm the existence of a layer of low porosity at the PS/silicon interface independently of the formation current density. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Nanostructures have played a key role in the development of different techniques to attack severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Some applications include masks, vaccines, and biosensors. The latter are of great interest for detecting diseases since some of their features allowed us to find specific markers in secretion samples such as saliva, blood, and even tears. Herein, we highlight how hierarchical nanoparticles integrated into two or more low-dimensional materials present outstanding advantages that are attractive for photonic biosensing using their nanoscale functions. The potential of nanohybrids with their superlative mechanical characteristics together with their optical and optoelectronic properties is discussed. The progress in the scientific research focused on using nanoparticles for biosensing a variety of viruses has become a medical milestone in recent years, and has laid the groundwork for future disease treatments. This perspective analyzes the crucial information about the use of hierarchical nanostructures in biosensing for the prevention, treatment, and mitigation of SARS-CoV-2 effects. Exposure to hydroquinone (HQ) can cause various health hazards and negative impacts on the environment. Therefore, we developed an efficient electrochemical sensor to detect and quantify HQ based on palladium nanoparticles deposited in a porous silicon-polypyrrole-carbon black nanocomposite (Pd@PSi−PPy−C)-fabricated glassy carbon electrode. The structural and morphological characteristics of the newly fabricated Pd@PSi−PPy−C nanocomposite were investigated utilizing FESEM, TEM, EDS, XPS, XRD, and FTIR spectroscopy. The exceptionally higher sensitivity of 3.0156 μAμM−1 cm−2 and a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.074 μM were achieved for this innovative electrochemical HQ sensor. Applying this novel modified electrode, we could detect wide-ranging HQ (1–450 μM) in neutral pH media. This newly fabricated HQ sensor showed satisfactory outcomes during the real sample investigations. During the analytical investigation, the Pd@PSi−PPy−C/GCE sensor demonstrated excellent reproducibility, repeatability, and stability. Over the last few years, the green synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs) using plant extracts has emerged as a promising methodology for the fabrication of metallic NPs (especially silver, copper, and gold NPs), as it involves an easy, fast, low-cost, and environmentally friendly bioprocess. However, many factors affect the sizes and morphologies of NPs biosynthesized by this method, including the nature of the plant extract, among others. Therefore, the green synthesis of metal NPs with defined stability, size, and morphology distribution remains under evaluation. In the present study, we propose aqueous extracts from the endemic-medicinal plantBudleja globosa(“Matico”) as an efficient bioproduct for the green synthesis of silver NPs (AgNPs). Experimental results indicate that room temperature, low concentrations of leaf extracts ofB. globosa, and silver nitrate salt were sufficient to biosynthesize AgNPs with uniform size (16 nm) and shape distribution (spherical). Chemical routes for the synthesis of nanostructures are fundamental in nanoscience. Among the different strategies for the production of nanostructures, this article reviews the fundamentals of the bottom-up approaches, focusing on wet chemistry synthesis. It offers a general view on the synthesis of different inorganic and hybrid organic–inorganic nanostructures such as ceramics, metal, and semiconductor nanoparticles, mesoporous structures, and metal–organic frameworks. This review article is especially written for a wide audience demanding a text focused on the basic concepts and ideas of the synthesis of inorganic and hybrid nanostructures. It is styled for both early researchers who are starting to work on this topic and also non-specialist readers with a basic background on chemistry. Updated references and texts that provide a deeper discussion and describing the different synthesis strategies in detail are given, as well as a section on the current perspectives and possible future evolution. The present work gives an overview of the developments in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) with metal-coated porous silicon used as an active substrate. We focused this review on the research referenced to SERS-active materials based on porous silicon, beginning from the patent application in 2002 and enclosing the studies of this year. Porous silicon and metal deposition technologies are discussed. Since the earliest studies, a number of fundamentally different plasmonic nanostructures including metallic dendrites, quasi-ordered arrays of metallic nanoparticles (NPs), and metallic nanovoids have been grown on porous silicon, defined by the morphology of this host material. SERS-active substrates based on porous silicon have been found to combine a high and well-reproducible signal level, storage stability, cost-effective technology and handy use. They make it possible to identify and study many compounds including biomolecules with a detection limit varying from milli- to femtomolar concentrations. The progress reviewed here demonstrates the great prospects for the extensive use of the metal-coated porous silicon for bioanalysis by SERS-spectroscopy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
