Photocatalysis has been recognized as a feasible method in water and wastewater treatment. Compared to other methods such as adsorption and chemical oxidation, the use of photocatalyst in the advanced oxidation processes gives benefits such as a longer lifetime of the catalyst and less consumable chemicals. Currently, explorations into low-cost, effective photocatalysts for organic contaminated water are being developed. Within this scheme, an easily separated photocatalyst with other functionality, such as high adsorption, is important. In this research, preparation of a magnetic nanocomposite photocatalyst based on agricultural waste, palm leaves biochar impregnated nickel nanoparticles (Ni/BC), was investigated. The nanocomposite was prepared by direct pyrolysis of palm leaves impregnated with nickel (II) chloride precursor. Furthermore, the physicochemical characterization of the material was performed by using an X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (SEM-EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), gas sorption analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The photocatalytic activity of Ni/BC was evaluated for methyl violet (MV) photocatalytic oxidation. The results from XRD, XPS and TEM analyses identified single nickel nanoparticles dispersed on the biochar structure ranging from 30-50 nm in size. The dispersed nickel nanoparticles increased the BET specific surface area of biochar from 3.92 m 2 /g to 74.12 m 2 /g oxidation. High photocatalytic activity of the Ni/BC was exhibited by complete MV removal in 30 min for the concentration ranging from 10-80 mg/L. In addition, the Ni/BC showed stability in the pH range of 4-10 and reusability without any activity change until fifth usage. The separable photocatalyst is related to magnetism of about 13.7 emu/g. The results highlighted the role of biochar as effective support for Ni as photoactive material.

Combination of magnetic nanomaterials with multifunctionality is an emerging class of materials that exhibit tremendous potential in advanced applications. Synthesizing such novel nanocomposites without compromising magnetic behavior and introducing added functional properties is proven challenging. In this study, an optically active quantum dot (QD) (core) encapsulated inside iron oxide (hollow shell) is prepared as the first electrochemical/fluorescence dual-modality probe. Presence of magnetic layer on the surface enables excellent magnetic property and the encapsulating of QDs on the hollow shell structure maintains the fluorescence with minimal quenching effect, endowing for potential application with fluorescence modality readout. We successfully demonstrate dual-modality sensing utilizing of QD-encapsulated magnetic hollow sphere nanoparticles (QD@MHS NPs) with magnetic separation ability and highly integrated multimodal sensing for the detection of various viruses including hepatitis E virus (HEV), HEV-like particles (HEV-LPs), norovirus-like particles (NoV-LPs), and norovirus (NoV) from clinical specimens. Most importantly, fecal samples of HEV-infected monkey are successfully diagnosed with sensitivity similar to gold standard real-time quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). This well-defined QD@MHS NPs-based nanoplatform intelligently integrates dual-modality sensing and magnetic bio-separation, which open a gateway to provide an efficient point-of care testing for virus diagnostics., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V. Despite aggregation's crucial role in controlling the environmental fate of nanoparticles (NP), the extent to which current models can describe the progressive stages of NP aggregation/sedimentation is still unclear. In this paper, 24 model combinations of two population-balance models and various collision frequency and settling velocity models are used to analyze spatiotemporal variations in the size and concentration of hydroxyapatite (HAp) NP. The impact of initial conditions and variability in attachment efficiency, α, with aggregate size are investigated. Although permeability models perform well in calculating collision frequencies, they are not appropriate for describing settling velocity because of their negative correlation or insensitivity in respect to fractal dimension. Considering both early and late stages of aggregation, both experimental and model data indicate overall mass removal peaks at an intermediate ionic strength (5 mM CaCl 2 ) even though the mean aggregate size continued to increase through higher ionic strengths (to 10 mM CaCl 2 ). This trend was consistent when different approaches to the initial particle size distribution were used and when a variable or constant α was used. These results point to the importance of accurately considering different stages of aggregation in modeling NP fate within various environmental conditions.

A process for the preparation of an abiotic protein affinity ligand is described. The affinity ligand, a synthetic polymer hydrogel nanoparticle (NP), is formulated with functional groups complementary to the surface presentation of the target protein. An iterative process is used to improve affinity by optimizing the composition and proportion of functional monomers. Since the polymer NPs are formed by a kinetically driven process, the sequence of functional monomers in the polymer chain is not controlled; only the average composition can be adjusted by the stoichiometry of the monomers in the feed. To compensate for this the hydrogel NP is lightly cross-linked resulting in chain flexibility that takes place on a submillisecond time scale allowing the polymer to "map" onto a protein surface with complementary functionality. In this study, we report a lightly cross-linked (2%) N-isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAm) synthetic polymer NP (50-65 nm) incorporating hydrophobic and carboxylate groups that binds with high affinity to the Fc fragment of IgG. The affinity and amount of NP bound to IgG is pH dependent. The hydrogel NP inhibits protein A binding to the Fc domain at pH 5.5, but not at pH 7.3. A computational analysis was used to identify potential NP-protein interaction sites. Candidates include a NP binding domain that overlaps with the protein A-Fc binding domain at pH 5.5. The computational analysis supports the inhibition experimental results and is attributed to the difference in the charged state of histidine residues. Affinity of the NP (3.5-8.5 nM) to the Fc domain at pH 5.5 is comparable to protein A at pH 7. These results establish that engineered synthetic polymer NPs can be formulated with an intrinsic affinity to a specific domain of a large biomacromolecule.

The highly reactive bimetallic Fe/Ni nanoparticles immobilized in nylon 66 and PVDF membranes were synthesized and characterized for dechlorination of trichloroethylene (TCE) under anoxic conditions. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) elemental maps showed that the distribution of Fe in nylon 66 membrane was uniform and the intensity of Ni layer was higher than that in PVDF membrane. The particle sizes of bimetallic Fe/Ni in PVDF and nylon 66 membranes were 81+/-12 and 55+/-14 nm with the Ni layers of 12+/-3 and 15+/-2 nm, respectively. Low agglomeration of immobilized Fe/Ni nanoparticles in nylon 66 membrane was observed, presumably attributed to the more multifunctional chelating groups in membrane. A rapid hydrodechlorination of TCE with ethane as the main end product was observed by the immobilized Fe/Ni nanoparticles. The pseudo-first-order rate constants for TCE dechlorination were 6.44+/-0.32 and 1.66+/-0.08 h(-1) for nylon 66 and PVDF membranes, respectively. In addition, the efficiency and rate of TCE dechlorination increased upon increasing the mass loading of Ni, ranging between 2.5 and 20 wt%, and then decreased when further increased the Ni loading to 25 wt%. In addition, the stability and longevity of the immobilized Fe/Ni nanoparticles was evaluated by repeatedly injecting TCE into the solutions. A rapid and complete dechlorination of TCE by trace amounts of Fe/Ni nanoparticles was observed after 16 cycles of injection within 10 days, indicating that the immobilization of Fe/Ni nanoparticles in the hydrophilic nylon 66 membrane can retain the longevity and high reactivity of nanoparticles towards TCE dechlorination.

The vanadium (V)-doped mesoporous titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) nanoparticles with V/Ti ratios from 0-2 wt% were prepared using sol-gel method in the presence of triblock polymers, Pluronic F127. SEM images showed that the V-doped TiO(2) nanoparticles were porous structures. The surface areas and pore sizes were in the range 85-107 m(2)/g and 12-14 nm, respectively. From XRPD, the V-doped mesoporous TiO(2) after calcination at 500 degrees C was mainly anatase phase, and the crystallite sizes were in the range 14-16 nm. TEM images showed that vanadia was doped both on the surface and in the lattice of anatase TiO(2). A slight red-shift in wavelength absorption was observed when V/Ti ratio increased from 0 to 2 wt%. Addition of vanadium ion slightly decreased the photocatalytic activity of TiO(2) toward the decolorization of MB under the illumination of UV light at 305 nm. However, a 1.6-1.8 times increase in rate constants for MB photodegradation was observed when 0.5-1.0 wt% V-doped TiO(2) was illumined by solar simulator at AM 1.5. These results demonstrated that the doping of low concentrations of V ion into mesoporous TiO(2) enhance the photocatalytic activity of mesoporous TiO(2) towards photodecomposition of azo dye in the visible range.

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) utilizing heterogeneous catalysts have attracted great attention in the last decade. The use of solid catalysts, including metal and metal oxide nanoparticle support materials, exhibited better performance compared with the use of homogeneous catalysts, which is mainly related to their stability in hostile environments and recyclability and reusability. Various solid supports have been reported to enhance the performance of metal and metal oxide catalysts for AOPs; undoubtedly, the utilization of clay as a support is the priority under consideration and has received intensive interest. This review provides up-to-date progress on the synthesis, features, and future perspectives of clay-supported metal and metal oxide for AOPs. The methods and characteristics of metal and metal oxide incorporated into the clay structure are strongly influenced by various factors in the synthesis, including the kind of clay mineral. In addition, the benefits of nanomaterials from a green chemistry perspective are key aspects for their further considerations in various applications. Special emphasis is given to the basic schemes for clay modifications and role of clay supports for the enhanced mechanism of AOPs. The continuing rapid expansion of industrial and consumer processes based on nanoparticles (NP) necessitates a robust model for delineating their fate and transport in groundwater. An ability to reliably specify the full parameter set for prediction of NP transport using continuum models is crucial. In this paper we report the reanalysis of a data set of 493 published column experiment outcomes together with their continuum modeling results. Experimental properties were parameterized into 20 factors which are commonly available. They were then used to predict five key continuum model parameters as well as the effluent concentration via artificial neural network (ANN)-based correlations. The Partial Derivatives (PaD) technique and Monte Carlo method were used for the analysis of sensitivities and model-produced uncertainties, respectively. Abstract: The photoassisted reduction of metal ions and organic dye by metal-deposited Degussa P25 TiO2 nanoparticles was investigated. Copper and silver ions were selected as the target metal ions to modify the surface properties of TiO2 and to enhance the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 towards methylene blue (MB) degradation. X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to characterize the crystallinity, chemical species and morphology of metal-deposited TiO2, respectively. Results showed that the particle size of metal-deposited TiO2 was larger than that of Degussa P25 TiO2. Based on XRPD patterns and XPS spectra, it was observed that the addition of formate promoted the photoreduction of metal ion by lowering its oxidation number, and subsequently enhancing the photodegradation efficiency and rate of MB. The pseudo-first-order rate constant (k obs) for MB photodegradation by Degussa P25 TiO2 was 3.94×10−2 min−1 and increased by 1.4–1.7 times in k obs with metal-deposited TiO2 for MB photodegradation compared to simple Degussa P25 TiO2. The increase in mass loading of metal ions significantly enhanced the photodegradation efficiency of MB; the k obs for MB degradation increased from 3.94×10−2 min−1 in the absence of metal ion to 4.64–7.28×10−2 min−1 for Ag/TiO2 and to 5.14–7.61×10−2 min−1 for Cu/TiO2. In addition, the electrons generated from TiO2 can effectively reduce metal ions and MB simultaneously under anoxic conditions. Abstract: The vanadium (V)-doped mesoporous titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles at low V/Ti ratios ranging from 0 to 2 wt% were prepared using hydrolytic sol–gel method in the presence of tri-block copolymer Pluronic F127. The microstructures of TiO2 in terms of morphology, crystallization, chemical states of species, surface area, and band gap were characterized by SEM, TEM, XRPD, XPS, surface area analyzer, and UV–Vis spectrophotometer, respectively. SEM images showed that the V-doped TiO2 nanoparticles were porous structures, and the surface areas and pore sizes ranged from 86±9 to 96±15m2/g and from 12±4 to 15±2nm, respectively. The XRPD patterns indicated that V-doped mesoporous TiO2 after calcination at 500°C was mainly anatase phase, and the crystallite sizes were in the range 14–16nm, which are consistent with the results obtained from SEM images. XPS spectra and HRTEM images showed that vanadia was doped both on the surface and in the lattice of anatase TiO2. A slight red-shift in wavelength absorption was observed when V/Ti ratio increased from 0 to 2 wt%. The present study reported biofabrication of flower-like SnO2 nanoparticles using Pometia pinnata leaf extract. The study focused on the physicochemical characteristics of the prepared SnO2 nanoparticles and its activity as photocatalyst and antibacterial agent. The characterization was performed by XRD, SEM, TEM, UV-DRS and XPS analyses. Photocatalytic activity of the nanoparticles was examined on bromophenol blue photooxidation; meanwhile, the antibacterial activity was evaluated against Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. XRD and XPS analyses confirmed the single tetragonal SnO2 phase. The result from SEM analysis indicates the flower like morphology of SnO2 nanoparticles, and by TEM analysis, the nanoparticles were seen to be in uniform spherical shapes with a diameter ranging from 8 to 20 nm. SnO2 nanoparticles showed significant photocatalytic activity in photooxidation of bromophenol blue as the degradation efficiency reached 99.93%, and the photocatalyst exhibited the reusability as the degradation efficiency values were insignificantly changed until the fifth cycle. Antibacterial assay indicated that the synthesized SnO2 nanoparticles exhibit an inhibition of tested bacteria and showed a potential to be applied for further environmental and medical applications. Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is a promising support for electrochemical and environmental applications. However, the role of rGO in dechlorination of chlorinated hydrocarbon by zerovalent iron-based nanoparticles remains unclear. Herein, the rGO-supported bimetallic Fe/Ni nanocomposites were fabricated by chemical reduction method and the microstructures as well as the electrochemical properties of rGO/Fe/Ni, were investigated to elucidate the dechlorination behaviors of trichloroethylene (TCE) under various environmental conditions. Results show that the 10–60 nm Fe/Ni nanoparticles with average particle size of 32 nm are homogeneously dispersed onto the rGO surface. The rGO/Fe/Ni exhibits excellent dechlorination efficiency and rate of TCE is 2.4 times higher than that of free Fe/Ni nanoparticles. Cyclic voltammetric curves and electrochemical impedance spectra indicate that the superior dechlorination activity is attributed to the strong interaction between Fe/Ni and rGO, low internal resistance and rapid diffusion rate of electrons and ions. In addition, the capacitive behavior of rGO can store and transfer 2.7–3.4 electrons produced from Fe 0 to the adsorbed TCE more readily, and then converts TCE to non-toxic ethane via hydrodechlorination in the presence of Ni nanoparticles. The rGO/Fe/Ni can be recycled for at least 8 times to effective dechlorinate TCE. Moreover, the reaction rate of TCE dechlorination can be enhanced 1.26–1.49 times when 5–10 mg L −1 humic acid are added. Results obtained in this study have clearly unveiled the role of rGO in hydrodechlorination of TCE and can provide a new insight into the development of rGO−supported bimetallic Fe/Ni nanoparticles for the enhanced removal of chlorinated pollutants in water and wastewater treatment. Aggregation as an essential mechanism impacting nanoparticle (NP) functionality, fate, and transport in the environment is currently modelled using population-balance equation (PBE) models which are computationally expensive when combined with other continuum-scale reactive transport models. We propose a new simple mass-concentration-based, chain-reaction modelling (CRM) framework to alleviate computational expenses of PBE and potentially to facilitate combination with other fate, transport, and reaction models. Model performance is compared with analytical PBE solution and a standard numerical PBE technique (fixed pivot, FP) by fitting against experimental data (i.e., hydrodynamic diameter and derived count rate of dynamic light scattering used as a representative of mass concentration) for early- and late-stage, aggregation of shattered graphene oxide (SGO) NP across a broad range of solution chemistries. In general, the CRM approach demonstrates a better match with the experimental data with a mean Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency (NSE) coefficient of 0.345 than the FP model with a mean NSE of 0.29. Comparing model parameters (aggregation rate constant and fractal dimension) obtained from fitting CRM and FP to the experimental data, similar trends or ranges are obtained between the two approaches. Computationally, the modified CRM is an order-of-magnitude faster than the FP technique, suggesting that it can be a promising modelling framework for efficient and accurate modelling of NP aggregation. However, in the scope of this study, reaction rate coefficients of the CRM have been linked to collision frequencies based on simplified and empirical relationships which need improvement in future studies.
