Composites composed of polyesters, poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) or poly[(butylene succinate)-co-(butylene adipate)] (PBSA), and 5 wt% of montmorillonite (CNa) or organo-modified montmorillonite (C30B) were melt-processed and transformed into films by either compression-molding or extrusion-calendering. XRD, rheological measurements and TEM images clearly indicated that films containing CNa are microcomposites, while nanocomposites were observed for those containing C30B. Using Flash DSC, it was possible, for the first time, not only to measure the heat capacity step at the glass transition of these two materials in their amorphous state, but also to investigate whether the preparation technique influenced the Rigid Amorphous Fraction (RAF) in our PBS- and PBSA-based nanocomposites. In this work, we have successfully shown the correlation between the microstructure of the films and their barrier properties, and especially the role played by the RAF. Indeed, the lowest permeabilities to gases and to water were determined in the films containing the highest RAF in both PBS- and PBSA-based materials.

Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB-co-4HB) films containing various contents of organo-modified montmorillonite C30B nanoclays were prepared by melt intercalation. Wide angle X-ray diffraction measurements and transmission electron microscopy observations evidenced aggregated and intercalated structures with individual nanoclay platelets in the nanocomposites and an orientation of nanoclays. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements showed that the nanoclay did not influence the crystalline structure of the matrix because it is mainly located in the polymer amorphous phase. The influence of the filler on the barrier properties of the film was evaluated by water diffusion, gas permeation (CO2, N2, O2) and liquid water sorption measurements. A decrease of the N2 permeability was measured due to the tortuosity effect of the filler associated with a decrease of the solubility within the matrix. The influence of the filler was more marked for O2 due to the larger decrease of O2 solubility. In contrast, the CO2 permeability increased whatever the filler content because of a facilitated transport mechanism due induced by the presence of quaternary ammonium cations on the C30B surface. The decrease of the water permeability with the filler was explained by a competition between the kinetic (diffusivity) and thermodynamic (solubility) contributions defining the permeability process.

The effect of injection molding parameters (screw rotational speed, back pressure, injec-tion flow rate and holding pressure) on the nanofiller dispersion of melt-mixed PP/clay nanocomposites was investigated. The nanocomposites containing 4 wt% clay were obtained by dilution of a PP/clay masterbatch into a PP matrix. The evaluation of the dispersion degree was obtained from dynamic rheological measurements. The storage modulus and complex viscosity exhibit significant dependence on the injection molding parameters. PP/clay nanocomposite molded using more severe injection parameters (high shear and long residence time) displays the highest storage modulus and complex viscosity, which illustrates the improved dispersion of clay platelets. This better dispersion leads to better mechanical properties particularly higher Young modulus, tensile strength and unnotched impact strength. A Taguchi analysis was used to identify the influence of individual process parameters. The major individual parameter is the injection flow rate, whose increase improves nanoclay dispersion. The combination of high back pressure and high screw rotational speed is also necessary to optimize the dispersion of clay nanoplatelets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses a study regarding the use water-injection as intercalating and exfoliating aid as an efficient one-step melt-compounding of copolyetheramide and pristine clay nanocomposites. The study examines the role of water injected into the melt in the filler dispersion and the prevention of the matrix from degradation during melt-extrusion. It also reveals the effects of the nanofiller dispersion on the mobility of the macromolecules.

Abstract: Polyamide 6 (PA6)/clay nanocomposites, based on organo-modified and pristine (i.e. purified but non-modified) montmorillonite, were prepared using a water-assisted extrusion process based on the injection of water during extrusion. The formation of a single PA6/water phase during extrusion (shown by High Pressure Differential Scanning Calorimetry (HPDSC)) improves the clay dispersion, decreases the PA6 melting temperature by 66°C (so-called cryoscopic effect), and thus prevents the polymer matrix degradation during processing. This process enables the compounding of pristine clay-based nanocomposites whose dispersion state, thermal and mechanical performances are close to what is generally reported for organo-modified montmorillonite-based nanocomposites. Advantage was taken of water-assisted extrusion to optimize the clay dispersion by increasing shear rate and of the cryoscopic effect to limit the degradation by decreasing the processing temperature. Using these conditions PA6/pristine clay nanocomposites properties are similar to those of more conventional PA6/organomodified clay nanocomposites. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
