Abstract A massive release of harmful substances especially heavy metal ions and dyes to the environment has been a major concern due to many people disregards the proper protocols in the waste management. The freshwater supplies are threatened and huge discharge of pollutants result from various anthropogenic activities may pose a major threat to the living organisms and negatively affect the ecosystem stability. This article reviews the development of magnetic iron oxide nanocomposites for removal of heavy metal ions and dyes from water. The highlight will be focused on current research activities for controlled size and dispersion of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles within solid matrices including zeolites, silica, clays, carbon, activated carbon, graphene and graphene oxide. The magnetic properties of the nanocomposites will be evaluated to determine whether they possessed sufficient magnetization for easy separation by an external magnet. The unique features of the synthesized materials will be investigated along with their application in the removal of heavy metal ions and dyes. The advantages and limitations of the magnetic nanocomposites will be highlighted to determine their adsorption ability. The effect of various parameters such as pH, contaminants concentration, adsorbent dosage, contact time and temperature will be summarized to identify the best condition for effective pollutants removal. This paper presents a green, facile and rapid method to prepare magnetite/zeolite-nanocomposites (NCs) in one step procedure at ambient temperature. The powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) pattern of iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) with the sole zeolite showed the broadening of zeolite peaks attributed to the incorporation of Fe 3 O 4 . Field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) analysis depicted that the Fe 3 O 4 ‒NPs were formed on the surface of porous zeolite framework. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis displayed the Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (NPs) were mostly in spherical shape with a mean diameter and standard deviation of 2.40 ± 0.41 nm. The selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) pattern confirmed the presence of cubic Fe 3 O 4 phase. The vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) results indicated the as-synthesized sample has a saturation magnetization of around 6.52 emu g −1 . The magnetite/zeolite-NCs can be considered as a low-cost alternative catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) process. The electrochemical measurement showed that the performance of magnetite/zeolite-NCs towards the ORR increased as the scan rate increased from 20 mV s −1 to 500 mV s −1 . The purpose of this study was to investigate the antibacterial effect of silver nanoparticles in chitosan-poly(ethylene glycol) suspension. The silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were prepared by use of an environmentally benign method from chitosan (Cts) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) at moderate temperature and with stirring for different times. Silver nitrate (AgNO) was used as the metal precursor and Cts and PEG were used as solid support and polymeric stabilizer, respectively. The antibacterial activity of silver-chitosan-poly(ethylene glycol) nanocomposites (Ag-Cts-PEG NCs) against Staphylococcus aureus, Micrococcus luteum, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli was tested by use of the Mueller-Hinton agar disk-diffusion method. Formation of AgNPs was determined by UV-visible spectroscopy; surface plasmon absorption maxima were observed at 415-430 nm in the UV-visible spectrum. The peaks in the XRD pattern confirmed that the AgNPs had a face-centered cubic structure; peaks of contaminated crystalline phases were not observed. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that the AgNPs synthesized were spherical. The optimum stirring time for synthesis of the smallest particle size (mean diameter 5.50 nm) was 12 h. The AgNPs in Cts-PEG were effective against all the bacteria tested. Higher antibacterial activity was observed for AgNPs with smaller size. These results suggest that AgNPs can be used as an effective inhibitor of bacteria and can be used in medical applications. Recent environmental problems and societal concerns associated with the disposal of petroleum based plastics throughout the world have triggered renewed efforts to develop new biodegradable products compatible with our environment. This article describes the preparation, characterization and biodegradation study of poly(lactic acid)/layered double hydroxide (PLA/LDH) nanocomposites from PLA and stearate-Zn3Al LDH. A solution casting method was used to prepare PLA/stearate-Zn3Al LDH nanocomposites. The anionic clay Zn3Al LDH was firstly prepared by co-precipitation method from a nitrate salt solution at pH 7.0 and then modified by stearate anions through an ion exchange reaction. This modification increased the basal spacing of the synthetic clay from 8.83 Å to 40.10 Å. The morphology and properties of the prepared PLA/stearate-Zn3Al LDH nanocomposites were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), tensile tests as well as biodegradation studies. From the XRD analysis and TEM observation, the stearate-Zn3Al LDH lost its ordered stacking-structure and was greatly exfoliated in the PLA matrix. Tensile test results of PLA/stearate-Zn3Al LDH nanocomposites showed that the presence of around 1.0-3.0 wt % of the stearate-Zn3Al LDH in the PLA drastically improved its elongation at break. The biodegradation studies demonstrated a significant biodegradation rate improvement of PLA in the presence of stearate-Zn3Al LDH nanolayers. This effect can be caused by the catalytic role of the stearate groups in the biodegradation mechanism leading to much faster disintegration of nanocomposites than pure PLA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of OH concentration on the size of Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4-NPs). Fe3O4-NPs with different cubic nanocrystal structure and percentage Fe3O4 content were successfully prepared, by use of the chemical co-precipitation method, on the exterior surface of talc, as solid substrate, by an environmentally friendly process. Ferric chloride, ferrous chloride, and sodium hydroxide were used as iron oxide precursors and reducing agent. The results showed that the morphology of the Fe3O4-NPs can be adjusted by changing the reaction conditions, for example volume of reducing agent and concentration of iron salts. Different size, dispersal, and the magnetic properties were obtained by changing the concentration of iron salts and NaOH. The products were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The reaction was conducted in a non-oxidizing, oxygen-free environment. Because the interlamellar spacing of the talc was almost unchanged (ds = 0.94-0.87 nm), the Fe3O4-NPs were formed on the exterior surface of the talc. The average diameter of the Fe3O4-NCs could be varied from 6.62-8.13 nm in adjusting the concentration of NaOH. The size of the nanoparticles decreased as the amount of reducing agent was increased. The goal of this study was to prepare nanocomposites of rice straw coated with different percentages of Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4-NPs) [1.0, 5.0, 10.0, and 20.0 wt. %]. In this process, the size of Fe3O4-NPs changed with varying volumes of NaOH (2M). The Fe3O4-NPs were precipitated with sodium hydroxide from a solution of Fe(II) and (III) chloride in water under ambient conditions and N2 gas by the quick precipitation method using urea as a stabilizer. The rice straw/Fe3O4 nanocomposites (NCs) prepared by this method had magnetic properties in percentages higher than ten (10 wt. %). When the volume of NaOH increased, Fe3O4-NPs with uniform size and better distribution could be prepared, which means that the size of the NPs decreased as the reducing agent was increased. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that Fe3O4-NPs in rice straw were spherical with diameters from 18.47 to 9.93 nm. The SEM results show that the structure of rice straw underwent no particular change. EDX indicated the presence of Fe3O4- NPs on the surface of rice straw. X-ray powder diffraction (PXRD) indicated that the magnetic Fe3O4-NPs were pure and that the particles were small. Anionic clay Mg-Al Layered double hydroxide (Mg-Al LDHs) of Mg/Al-NO3- with M2+:M3+ (3:1) ratio was synthesized by co-precipitation method from nitrate salt solutions were used with continuous agitation at constant pH 9. Beside, modification of nitrate anions by stearate anions between the LDH layers had carried out through ion exchange reaction. Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB)/Polycaprolactone (PCL)/stearate Mg-Al Layered Double Hydroxide (LDH) nanocomposites were prepared via solution casting intercalation method. FT-IR spectra showed the presence of carboxylic acid (COOH) group indicates that stearate anions were successfully replacing the nitrate anions in the interlayer Mg-Al LDH. The XRD results showed that increasing basal spacing from 8.66 to 32.97 Å in modified stearate Mg-Al LDH. Additional of 1.0 wt % stearate Mg-Al LDH resulting higher basal spacing where polymer chain intercalated into interlayer LDH and TEM results revealed that the 1.0 wt % stearate Mg-Al LDH layers are homogeneously distributed in the PHB/PCL polymer blends matrix. TGA characterization proven that 80PHB/20PCL/1stearate Mg-Al LDH has lower weight loss and higher thermal stability. Enhancement in 300% elongation at break and 66% tensile strength in the presence of 1.0 wt % of the stearate Mg-Al LDH as compare with PHB/PCL blends. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) proved that clay improves compatibility between polymer matrix and the best ratio 80PHB/20PCL/1stearate Mg-Al LDH surface was well dispersed and stretched before it breaks. Poly-3-hydroxybutyrate/Poly(butyleneadipate-co-terephthalate)/layered double hydroxide (PHB/PBAT/LDH) nanocomposites were prepared from PHB/PBAT blend and stearate Zn3Al LDH via a solution casting method in this study. By using co-precipitation method, the pristine Zn3Al LDH was prepared from nitrate salts solution at pH 7 and then modified by stearate anions through an ion exchange reaction. This modification increased the basal spacing of the LDH from 8.77 to 24.94 Å. The stearate Zn3Al LDH infrared spectrum showed the presence of stearate ions in the synthesized Zn3Al LDH. Mechanical properties of the nanocomposites with 2 wt% stearate Zn3Al LDH content show 56 wt% improvements in elongation at break compared to those of the blend. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Small sized magnetite iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4-NPs) with were successfully synthesized on the surface of rice straw using the quick precipitation method in the absence of any heat treatment. Ferric chloride (FeCl3.6H2O), ferrous chloride (FeCl2.4H2O), sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and urea (CH4N2O) were used as Fe3O4-NPs precursors, reducing agent and stabilizer, respectively. The rice straw fibers were dispersed in deionized water, and then urea was added to the suspension, after that ferric and ferrous chloride were added to this mixture and stirred. After the absorption of iron ions on the surface layer of the fibers, the ions were reduced with NaOH by a quick precipitation method. The reaction was carried out under N2 gas. The mean diameter and standard deviation of metal oxide NPs synthesized in rice straw/Fe3O4 nanocomposites (NCs) were 9.93 ± 2.42 nm. The prepared rice straw/Fe3O4-NCS were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXF) and Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Abstract: We have successfully developed a simple method for preparing silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) using UV irradiation of AgNO3 in the interlamellar space of a montmorillonite (MMT) without any reducing agent or heat treatment. The properties of Ag/MMT nanocomposites were studied as a function of the UV irradiation period. UV irradiation disintegrated the Ag NPs into smaller size until a relatively stable size and size distribution were achieved. The results from UV–vis spectroscopy show that particles size of Ag NPs decrease with the increase of irradiation period. A green quick precipitation method was successfully used for synthesis of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4-NPs) on the surface of sodium/potassium type zeolite. Ferric chloride, ferrous chloride and sodium hydroxide aqueous solutions were used in the synthesis and coating of the Fe3O4-NPs on the surface of the zeolite to produce the zeolite/magnetic iron oxide nanocomposite (zeolite/Fe3O4 -NCs). The reaction was performed in aqueous suspension phase under the ambient condition as green chemistry method. Characterization with Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXF) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed the formation of Fe3O4-NPs with mean particle sizes of 3.55±1.02 nm on the surface of the zeolite. In this paper, Polyimide/Montmorillonite Nanocomposites (PI/MMT NCs), based on aromatic diamine (4-Aminophenyl sulfone) (APS) and aromatic dianhydride (3,3',4,4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride) (BTDA) were prepared using in situ polymerization and solution-dispersion techniques. The prepared PI/MMT NCs films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The XRD results showed that at the content of 1.0 wt % Organo Montmorillonite (OMMT) for two techniques and 3.0 wt % OMMT for the in situ polymerization technique, the OMMT was well-intercalated, exfoliated and dispersed into polyimide matrix. The OMMT agglomerated when its amount exceeded 10 wt % and 3.0 wt % for solution-dispersion and in situ polymerization techniques respectively. These results were confirmed by the TEM images of the prepared PI/MMT NCs. The TGA thermograms indicated that thermal stability of prepared PI/MMT NCs were increased with the increase of loading that, the effect is higher for the samples prepared by in situ polymerization technique.
