The quick-release technique to estimate musculotendinous (MT) stiffness has been extensively used over the last years, in both animals and humans, to gain insights in the adaptive process of the series elastic component (SEC). Recently, MT stiffness quantification, i.e., SEC behavior, has been revisited for subjects not able to fully activate their muscles (effects of long-term spaceflight or non-mature muscles). Such a phenomenon can also be encountered in stunted children. So, the aim of the present study was to analyze the effect of stunting on MT stiffness taking into account possible defect in muscle activation. For this study, 20 eutrophic children (EU) with an average age of 9years±4months were compared to 11age matched stunted children (S) evaluated by the height-to-age index. The MT stiffness index was obtained with regard to stiffness-torque and stiffness-soleus EMG relationships. The children of the S group presented a significantly lower Maximal Voluntary Contraction (MVC) in plantar flexion in comparison with children of the EU group (-37.8%). The significantly lower MT stiffness index for S children (-42.6%) was evidenced only when quantified with regard to the stiffness-soleus EMG relationship (66.5±42.8 vs. 38.2±19.9 Nmrad(-1)%(-1)). Possible delay in fiber type differentiation or tendinous structure maturation can account for the lower MT stiffness index in S children. In conclusion, stunting during early childhood delays the differentiation and maturation processes of musculotendinous structures as shown by the lower MT stiffness quantified with regards to muscle activity, also altered for stunted prepubertal children., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. In a previous study, Achilles tendon vibrations were enough to improve the triceps surae (TS) activation capacities and also to slightly increase TS Hoffmann reflex (H-reflex) obtained by summing up soleus (Sol) and gastrocnemii (GM and GL) EMGs. The purpose of the present study was to analyze separately Sol and GM or GL reflexes to account for different effects of the vibrations on the reflex excitability of the slow soleus and of the gastrocnemii muscles. A control group (n = 13) and a vibration group (n = 16) were tested in pre-test and post-test conditions. The Achilles tendon vibration program consisted of 1 h of daily vibration (frequency: 50 Hz) applied during 14 days. Maximal Sol, GM and GL H-reflexes, and M-waves were recorded, and their H(max)/M(max) ratios gave the index of reflex excitability. After the vibration protocol, only Sol H(max)/M(max) was enhanced (p < 0.001). The enhanced Sol reflex excitability after vibration is in favor of a decrease in the pre-synaptic inhibition due to the repeated vibrations and the high solicitation of the reflex pathway. Those results of a short period of vibration applied at rest may be limited to the soleus because of its high density in muscle spindles and slow motor units, both structures being very sensitive to vibrations.

The activation capacities and neuromuscular efficiency (NME) of the triceps surae (TS) of prepubescent children (7-11 years) and adults were evaluated during submaximal and maximal (MVC) isometric plantarflexion to determine whether they varied with age. TS-EMG were obtained by summing-up the rectified electromyograms of the soleus and gastrocnemii muscles; these data were quantified using a sliding average method and normalized with reference to the TS maximal compound action potential (TS-M-wave). The maximal EMG increased significantly with age in the children, but less than MVC, what led to a significant increase in NME(Max) (MVC/TS-EMG(max) ratio). The EMG-torque relationship indicated an age-related overactivation of TS at low torque, what led to a lower NME(Sub-max) (inverse of the slope of the EMG-torque relationship) for the youngest children. The overactivation of TS was accompanied by contraction of the TA, which decreased with age. The youngest children were also less able to maintain a target torque and muscle activation. Finally, the twitch interpolated method revealed an age-dependant activation deficit. We conclude that central mechanisms are the main cause of the lower torques developed by children and they appear to vary with age in prepubertal children.

Musculo-articular stiffness of the triceps surae (TS) increases with age in prepubescent children, under both passive and active conditions. This study investigates whether these changes in muscle stiffness influence the amplitude of the reflex response to muscle stretch. TS stiffness and reflex activities were measured in 46 children (7-11 yr old) and in 9 adults. The TS Hoffmann reflex (H reflex) and T reflex (tendon jerk) in response to taping the Achilles tendon were evaluated at rest and normalized to the maximal motor response (Mmax). Sinusoidal perturbations of passive or activated muscles were used to evoke stretch reflexes and to measure passive and active musculoarticular stiffness. The children's Hmax-to-Mmax ratio did not change with age and did not differ from adult values. The T-to-Mmax ratio increased with age but remained significantly lower than in adults. Passive stiffness also increased with age and was correlated with the T-to-Mmax ratio. Similarly, the children's stretch reflex and active musculoarticular stiffness were significantly correlated and increased with age. We conclude that prepubescent children have smaller T reflexes and stretch reflexes than adults, and the lower musculoarticular stiffness is mainly responsible for these smaller reflexes, as indicated by the parallel increases in reflex and stiffness.

Background: Although numerous studies revealed that isokinetic dynamometers were valuable tools for assessing spastic hypertonia, no standard methodology using such devices is currently widespread in clinical setting. The aim of this study was to standardize a protocol to assess spastic hypertonia in the triceps surae., Methods: The passive resistance during dorsiflexions imposed from 10 to 300 degrees /s with an isokinetic dynamometer was measured at the neutral position in 15 patients with spastic hypertonia and 12 healthy subjects. The normalized passive resistance was obtained by expressing raw passive resistance as a percent of the values measured at the lowest velocity (10 degrees /s). EMG signals from plantar and dorsiflexors were also recorded., Findings: While no significant difference between spastic patients and control subjects was observed in raw passive resistance values, the difference was significant for each tested velocity when considering the normalized values. Furthermore, the Ashworth score was significantly correlated with the normalized passive resistance for each velocity whereas no correlation was observed with the raw passive resistance. For the patients, except at the highest velocity, the normalized passive resistance was not affected by the fact that reflex responses in the triceps surae were elicited or not., Interpretation: The normalized passive resistance, expressed with respect to the initial one, i.e., measured at very low velocity, seems a very effective parameter to quantify the velocity-dependent increase in resistance to passive stretch in spastic plantarflexors. However, while the simplicity of the isokinetic tests and the reduced time of data treatment seems to support the clinical use of this methodology, further investigations are required to definitely standardize the protocol.

Variations in force and electromyographic (EMG) activities of skeletal muscles with the time-of-day have been previously described, but not for a postural muscle, submitted to daily postural and locomotor tasks. In this article, mechanical performances, EMGs, and the ratio between these parameters, i.e., the neuromuscular efficiency (NME), were measured on the triceps surae (TS) of eight subjects, two times each day, at 6:00 and 18:00 h. NME was evaluated under different experimental conditions (electrically induced contractions, reflex contractions, maximal and submaximal voluntary isometric contractions, and during a natural movement, a drop jump) to determine whether mechanisms, peripheral or central in origin, were responsible for the eventual changes in NME with time-of-day. To calculate NME in induced conditions (NMEind), a supramaximal electrical stimulus was applied to the tibial nerve, and the maximal M wave of TS (TS Mmax) and the amplitude of the twitch tension (PtMmax) in response to this electrical stimulation were quantified. TS Mmax was significantly lower in the evening (mean gain value -10.7 +/- 5.5%, p < 0.05), whereas PtMmax was not significantly modified. NMEind (PtMmax/TS Mmax) was significantly higher in the evening (mean gain of 17.6 +/- 5.8%, p < 0.05), and this increase was necessarily peripheral in origin. Secondly, maximal tendon taps were applied to the Achilles tendon in order to quantify at the two times-of-day the reflexes in response to a mechanical stimulus. The maximal reflex, TS Tmax/Mmax (%), the peak amplitude of the twitch tension associated to this tendon jerk (PtTmax), and the corresponding NME (NMEreflex = PtTmax/TS Tmax/Mmax) were not affected by time-of-day, indicating that reflex excitability did not present daytime variations when tested under these conditions. Voluntary isometric contractions were required under maximal (MVC) and submaximal (25% MVC) conditions, and the corresponding torques and TS EMG were measured. MVC was higher in the evening (mean gain: 8.6 +/- 2.7%, p < 0.05) and TS EMGmax (normalized with regard to TS Mmax) also increased in the evening but not significantly; thus, NMEMvc was not modified. At 25% of MVC, TS EMG was significantly higher in the evening (mean gain of 23 +/- 13.9%, p <0.05) and a trend for a lower NME25%MVC in the evening was observed, a result probably representative of a higher muscle fatigue state in the evening. Finally, to test the muscle capacities during a natural task, a NME index was calculated during a drop jump (DJ). The NMEDJ was defined as the ratio between jump height and mean amplitude of TS EMG (% of TS Mmax) between the drop and the jump. Both jump height and NMEDJ were significantly higher in the evening (mean gains of 10.9 +/- 4.5% and 15.7 +/- 7.4%, respectively, p <0.05). In conclusion, daytime changes in the efficiency of postural muscles seem to depend on both peripheral and central mechanisms. According to the experimental conditions, NME of the postural muscle could increase, remain constant, or even decrease in the evening, and this result may reflect reverse effects of better contractile capacities and higher fatigue state.

Stretch reflexes were evoked in the submaximally activated ankle extensors during sinusoidal length perturbations. A mean stretch reflex (SR) amplitude ((-)SRA), i.e., SR area/SR duration was quantified for the soleus muscle and for the gastrocnemii muscles. (-)SRA was also expressed in relative values ((-)SRA(rel)), i.e., SRA was related to the corresponding background electromyogram (EMG). Sinusoidal length perturbations were applied in two ways: (1) at a fixed frequency (16 Hz) and at different levels of voluntary contraction [10% to 70% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC)] and (2) at a constant activation level (50% MVC) and at frequencies ranging from 6 to 16 Hz. Then, new parameters are proposed to characterize muscle reflex excitability. The first parameter, SR(index), consisting in the slope of the (-)SRA-EMG relationship, was considered to be more representative of central influences on the reflex pathway. Secondly, the frequency distribution of the stretch reflex was analyzed and the area under the (-)SRA(rel)-frequency curve gave the second parameter (FD-(-)SRA(rel)). This parameter should account for both central and peripheral mechanisms on the reflex pathway. These parameters were found to be higher for the highly excitable soleus than for the less excitable gastrocnemii muscles. SR(index) and FD-(-)SRA(rel) can be proposed as a tool to analyze changes in reflex excitability, which can accompany a process of neuromuscular plasticity. In order to validate the procedure, the proposed parameters were quantified in a case study before and after a period of plyometric training.

Surface electromyograms (EMGs) were analysed on the short and long head of the biceps brachii (BBSH and BBLH) during single (F and S) or dual (F+S) flexion and supination tasks. It was confirmed, by the analysis of EMG root-mean-square (RMS) values, that the highest activations of BBSH and BBLH were obtained during a maximal dual task. This study was essentially concerned with the analysis of power spectra data obtained during progressive or ramp contractions (RCs). The shape of the power spectra established during the first second of the RCs differs between F, S and F+S tasks. Differences in mean power frequency (MPF) calculated during RCs would be representative of a recruitment of motor units (MUs) that is, at least partly, task-dependent. In order to compare MPF values calculated from RCs performed under different mechanical conditions (F, S and F+S), MPF-RMS(PSD) relationships have been established (RMS(PSD) being defined as the power spectrum density RMS). Both BBSH and BBLH exhibited initial MPF values higher in supination RC than in flexion RC. Because of plateau values reached at the same level of muscle activation whatever the task performed, the slope of the MPF-RMS(PSD) relationship was lower in S than in F. These results are in favour of MU recruitment that is, at least partly, different in F and in S conditions. Dual submaximal tasks seem to mix the activation of the F and S subpopulations of MUs as revealed by the spectral parameters obtained during F+S ramp contractions. This study could find some implication in the field of muscle rehabilitation or reinforcement.

Rat soleus muscles were overloaded with intent to induce a relative increase in fast fibres and modifications in muscular stiffness. The overloading technique was a training period consisting of an 11-week vertical jump programme. The method of controlled releases was used to obtain tension/extension curves characterizing the elastic behaviour of the soleus. Fibre typing was made by myofibrillar adenosine 5'-triphosphatase staining. With regard to a control group, training resulted in a relative decrease in type I fibres for the benefit of type II fibres. Training also induced a decrease in muscle stiffness as attested notably by significant differences in maximal extension. These results are interpreted in terms of modifications occurring in the active fraction of the so-called series elastic component.

The activation of antagonistic muscles is studied during isometric combined contractions of bifunctional muscles. It is established that the co-contraction mechanism observed in such situations limits unwanted movements. Furthermore, when a co-contraction appears between two biantagonistic muscles, the phenomenon underlies a conflicting situation and, consequently, the muscular patterns encountered are in most cases the reverse of those classically described. In these circumstances the inhibition usually present between antagonistic muscles could be masked, due to convergence on the motoneurones of both inhibitory and excitatory discharges coming from homonymous and antagonistic muscles of a given bifunctional muscle.

With reference to the concept that contraction of a muscle can be inhibited by contraction of its antagonists, the excitability of a bifunctional muscle, the soleus (plantarflexor and adductor) was studied during voluntary isometric contractions of the abductors in man. For this purpose, the soleus monosynaptic stretch reflex (MSR) was solicited by means of quick-release dorsiflexion movements which also induce inactivation of the tibialis anterior (unloading reflex). When different initial torques of dorsiflexion were developed (reference conditions) the amplitude of the soleus MSR was found to be related linearly to the maximal value of angular acceleration. When an abduction torque was superimposed (combined efforts), the soleus response was always depressed, but no significant reinforcement of this inhibition was observed when the abduction torque increased. From present results, and from classical data concerning reciprocal inhibition between soleus and tibialis anterior, it is concluded that the MSR of a bifunctional muscle is depressed when the antagonists of either one of its functions are voluntarily activated.
