Background: Not many large‐sample investigations are available that compare the potency of the relationship of remnant cholesterol (RC) and other lipid parameters with diabetes and prediabetes. The goals of our study are to discover the relationship between RC and prediabetes, diabetes, and insulin resistance (IR) and to investigate RC, high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL‐C), non‐HDL‐C, triglycerides (TG), low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL‐C), total cholesterol (TC), TC/HDL‐C, LDL‐C/HDL‐C, and TG/HDL‐C, which are the lipid parameters that are most positively related to diabetes, prediabetes, and IR. Methods: This research enrolled 36 684 subjects from China's eight provinces. We employed multiple logistic regression analysis for testing the relationship between lipid parameters and diabetes, prediabetes, and IR. Results: After adjusting for potential confounders, and comparing the results with other lipid parameters, the positive relationship between RC and diabetes (odds ratio [OR] 1.417, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.345–1.492), prediabetes (OR 1.555, 95% CI: 1.438–1.628), and IR (OR 1.488, 95% CI: 1.404–1.577) was highest. RC was still related to diabetes, prediabetes, and IR even when TG <2.3 mmol/L (diabetes: OR 1.256, 95% CI: 1.135–1.390; prediabetes: OR 1.503, 95% CI: 1.342–1.684; and IR: OR 1.278, 95% CI: 1.140–1.433), LDL‐C <2.6 mmol/L (diabetes: OR 1.306, 95% CI: 1.203–1.418; prediabetes: OR 1.597, 95% CI: 1.418–1.798; and IR: OR 1.552, 95% CI: 1.416–1.701), or HDL‐C ≥1 mmol/L (diabetes: OR 1.456, 95% CI: 1.366–1.550; prediabetes: OR 1.553, 95% CI: 1.421–1.697; and IR: OR 1.490, 95% CI: 1.389–1.598). Conclusion: RC is more positively related to diabetes, prediabetes, and IR than conventional lipids and lipid ratios in the general population, the relationships between RC and diabetes, prediabetes, and IR are stable, even if HDL‐C, LDL‐C, or TG are at appropriate levels. Aims: Visceral obesity is a major health issue and is a risk factor for an atherogenic state. Visceral obesity has been reported to be a crucial link between albuminuria and cardiovascular diseases (CVD). This study attempted to explore the association between visceral obesity and albuminuria in prediabetic individuals. Methods: This cross‐sectional study included 24871 prediabetic participants over 40 years of age from seven centres across China (REACTION study). The visceral adiposity index (VAI) was determined based on the measurements of anthropometric indices and lipid parameters. Increased albuminuria was defined as a urinary albumin‐creatinine ratio (UACR) ≥30 mg/g, indicating kidney damage. Propensity score matching was used to reduce bias, and a multiple logistic regression model was performed to evaluate the association between visceral obesity and albuminuria in the population with prediabetes. Results: Participants with increased UACR exhibited increased VAI, age, blood pressure, triglycerides, poor glycaemic control, CVD events, and decreased estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Multiple logistic regression analysis demonstrated that VAI quartiles were positively associated with an increased risk of albuminuria (Q2: odds rate [OR]: 1.10, 95% confidence intervals [CI] 0.96–1.25; Q3: OR: 1.16, 95% CI 1.01–1.32; Q4: OR: 1.26, 95% CI 1.10–1.44, p for trend = 0.001). Stratified analysis revealed that the association of VAI level with increased albuminuria risk also occurred in people who were young, women, overweight or obese, with poor control of blood pressure, and eGFR ≥90 ml/min per 1.73 m2. Objective: To explore the association between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its component and thyroid volume in Chinese adolescents, and to compare the detection rate of MetS under the three different diagnostic criteria. Methods: A total of 1097 school students (610 males and 487 females, ages 12–15 years) were enrolled. All the participants underwent physical examination, biochemical test, and thyroid gland ultrasonography. The thyroid volume of normal, overweight and obese group was compared. We also analyzed the association between the number of MetS components and thyroid volume. Linear and multiple linear regression were applied to explore the association between metabolic parameters and thyroid volume. Results: The thyroid volume of the males in overweight (t = 3.784, P < 0.001) and obese group (t = 5.068, P < 0.001) was significantly larger than that in normal group; the thyroid volume of the females in overweight group (t = 4.627,P < 0.001) was significantly larger than that of normal group. As the number of MetS components increased, the thyroid volume also increased significantly (F = 10.64, P < 0.01). Height, weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, hip circumference, systolic blood pressure, fasting insulin, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), uric acid and triglyceride were all positively associated with thyroid volume in the adolescents (P all < 0.001). Meanwhile, there was a negative association between high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and thyroid volume (P < 0.001). According to multiple linear regression, waist circumference (β = 0.029, 95 %CI: 0.015 ~ 0.042; P < 0.01) and waist height ratio (β = 3.317, 95 %CI: 1.661 ~ 4.973; P < 0.01) were predict factors of thyroid volume. No statistical difference was found in the detection rates of metabolic syndrome under the three diagnostic criteria. Conclusions: Overweight, obesity and metabolic syndrome was associated with adolescent thyroid volume. Central obesity may be an independent risk factor for thyroid enlargement in adolescents. Background: Lipid accumulation product (LAP) as a powerful marker of visceral obesity is an independent risk factor of chronic kidney disease. The present study attempted to explore the association between LAP and albuminuria in prediabetic individuals. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study and enrolled 26,529 participants with prediabetes over 40 years old with prediabetes from seven provinces in China. LAP was calculated from waist circumference and fasting triglycerides. Elevated albuminuria was defined by urinary albumin-creatinine ratio (uACR) ≥ 30 mg/g. Propensity score matching was applied to reduce bias, comparison between LAP and other traditional visceral obesity indices was performed and multiple logistic regression models were conducted to assess the association between LAP and albuminuria in the prediabetic population. Results: Individuals with uACR ≥ 30 mg/g were older and had higher BP, BMI, WC, TG, fasting insulin, glycohemoglobin and LAP, as well as lower eGFR and HDL level. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed elevated LAP was associated with increased odds of albuminuria (OR [95%CI]Q2 vs Q1 1.09 [0.94, 1.27], OR [95%CI]Q3 vs Q1 1.13 [0.97, 1.31], OR [95%CI]Q4 vs Q1 1.42 [1.21, 1.67], P for trend=0.018), and superior over waist-to-hip ratio or waist-to-height ratio. Stratification indicated that the prediabetic population with higher LAP level and characterized by female gender, middle age, being overweight, and rise in blood pressure were more likely to have increased uACR. Millions of people are afflicted by depression, a highly prevalent mental illness with increased morbidity and mortality. Advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) are potential risk factors for depression. We aimed to investigate the correlation of AGEs with depressive symptoms and the severity of depressive symptoms. This study was nested in the prospective REACTION (Risk Evaluation of cAncers in Chinese diabeTic Individuals) study and included 4420 eligible participants. skin autofluorescence (SAF) was used to measure skin AGEs. Depressive symptoms were evaluated by the Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS). Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to assess the association of AGEs with depressive symptoms and the severity of depressive symptoms. Logistic analysis showed a significantly positive relationship between quartiles of SAF-AGEs and the risk of depressive symptoms with the OR [95% confidence interval (CI), p value] of 1.24 (95% CI: 1.03–1.50, p = 0.022), 1.39 (95% CI: 1.15–1.68, p = 0.001) and 1.57 (95% CI: 1.28–1.91, p < 0.001) for multivariable-adjusted model respectively. And SAF-AGEs were associated with the severity of depressive symptoms with the multivariable-adjusted OR (95% CI, p value) of 1.06 (95% CI:0.79–1.43, p = 0.681), 1.47 (95% CI: 1.08–1.99, p = 0.014), and 1.54 (95% CI: 1.12–2.11, p = 0.008) respectively. Stratified analyses showed that SAF-AGEs were significantly associated with the severity of depressive symptoms only in females, overweight people, individuals with hypertension, and those without diabetes and insomnia. The present study showed that a higher SAF-AGEs level was associated with depressive symptoms and the severity of depressive symptoms. • A higher SAF-AGEs level was associated with depressive symptoms in Chinese population. • SAF-AGEs was related to the severity of depressive symptoms. • There is a threshold value of SAF-AGEs, below which a lower prevalence of moderate to severe depressive symptoms was seen.
