Proprioception is the sense of body position and movement that relies on afference from the proprioceptors in muscles and joints. Proprioceptive responses in the primary sensorimotor (SM1) cortex can be elicited by stimulating the proprioceptors using evoked (passive) limb movements. In magnetoencephalography (MEG), proprioceptive processing can be quantified by recording the movement evoked fields (MEFs) and movement-induced beta power modulations or by computing corticokinematic coherence (CKC) between the limb kinematics and cortical activity. We examined whether cortical proprioceptive processing quantified with MEF peak strength, relative beta suppression and rebound power and CKC strength is affected by the movement range of the finger. MEG activity was measured from 16 right-handed healthy volunteers while movements were applied to their right-index finger metacarpophalangeal joint with an actuator. Movements were either intermittent, every 3000 ± 250 ms, to estimate MEF or continuous, at 3 Hz, to estimate CKC. In both cases, 4 different ranges of motion of the stimuli were investigated: 15, 18, 22 and 26 mm for MEF and 6, 7, 9 and 13 mm for CKC. MEF amplitude, relative beta suppression and rebound as well as peak CKC strength at the movement frequency were compared between the movement ranges in the source space. Inter-individual variation was also compared between the MEF and CKC strengths. As expected, MEF and CKC responses peaked at the contralateral SM1 cortex. MEF peak, beta suppression and rebound and CKC strengths were similar across all movement ranges. Furthermore, CKC strength showed a lower degree of inter-individual variation compared with MEF strength. Our result of absent modulation by movement range in cortical responses to passive movements of the finger indicates that variability in movement range should not hinder comparability between different studies or participants. Background: Proprioceptive accuracy refers to the individual's ability to perceive proprioceptive information, that is, the information referring to the actual state of the locomotor system, which originates from mechanoreceptors located in various parts of the locomotor system and from tactile receptors located in the skin. Proprioceptive accuracy appears to be an important aspect in the evaluation of sensorimotor functioning; however, no widely accepted standard assessment exists. In this systematic review, our goal was to identify and categorize different methods that are used to assess different aspects of proprioceptive accuracy., Methods: A literature search was conducted in 5 different databases (PubMed, SPORTDiscus, PsycINFO, ScienceDirect, and SpringerLink)., Results: Overall, 1139 scientific papers reporting 1346 methods were included in this review. The methods assess 8 different aspects of proprioception: (a) the perception of joint position, (b) movement and movement extent, (c) trajectory, (d) velocity, and the sense of (e) force, (f) muscle tension, (g) weight, and (h) size. They apply various paradigms of psychophysics (i.e., the method of adjustment, constant stimuli, and limits)., Conclusion: As the outcomes of different tasks with respect to various body parts show no associations (i.e., proprioceptive accuracy is characterized by site-specificity and method-specificity), the appropriate measurement method for the task needs to be chosen based on theoretical considerations and/or ecological validity., (Copyright © 2022. The aim of this study is to explore factor structure of audiences' physical experience and their related bodily sensations when watching dance choreographies. This study also includes the process of developing an instrument for measuring the observers' physical experience of dance choreographies and their related kinesthetic responses to watching dance. In the main study, participants rated their physical experiences and kinesthetic responses when watching 16 different dance choreographies of various dance forms, including contemporary dance, jazz, tango, and hip-hop. Three factors of the observers' physical experiences when watching dance were identified: Action Tendency, Arousal, and Relaxation. Furthermore, the results show that the structure of the observers' kinesthetic responses when watching dance consisted of three factors: Focus, Excitement and Embodied Anticipation. The spectators' physical experiences and bodily sensations in response to an observed dance are the result of their engagement in the dance, the pleasure they draw from the dance, the emotions provoked in them, and their admiration for the performance. We can accurately reach to touch our index fingertip to various points on the body without vision. Awareness of location/motion of the index fingertip and other body parts through proprioception is required for such movements. Proprioception involves processing sensory information, but it is also debated whether internal model estimates of body state from motor commands improve proprioception. We tested the hypothesis that proprioceptive errors increase with increases in speed of hand movement and whether an internal model contributes to more accurate proprioception, especially in higher speed movements. Ten subjects made voluntary reaching movements with their dominant arm to touch its index-tip to the index-tip of the non-dominant arm that was moved passively or actively at three speeds (slow, comfortable, fast) in various directions. Four conditions required the experimenter to passively move the subject's target arm at slow, comfortable and fast speeds and in different directions. A fifth condition required the subject to actively move both arms to perform the task. Subjects performed these tasks with high accuracy during slow and comfortable speed movements of the target arm. Errors averaged 3.7 mm larger when the target was moved faster and were equivalent to errors for slower movements (p < 0.014). Errors in the active and passive target movement conditions were also equivalent (p < 0.001). These findings show that proprioception is accurate across many different speeds of passive and active target motion and that there was no evidence than an internal model contributes to improved accuracy of proprioception during active movements., (© 2022. Unlike age-related brain changes linked to motor activity, neural alterations related to self-motion perception remain unknown. Using fMRI data, we investigated age-related changes in the central processing of somatosensory information by inducing illusions of right-hand rotations with specific proprioceptive and tactile stimulation. Functional connectivity during resting-state (rs-FC) was also compared between younger and older participants. Results showed common sensorimotor activations in younger and older adults during proprioceptive and tactile illusions, but less deactivation in various right frontal regions and the precuneus were found in the elderly. Older participants exhibited a less-lateralized pattern of activity across the primary sensorimotor cortices (SM1) in the proprioceptive condition only. This alteration of the interhemispheric balance correlated with declining individual performance in illusion velocity perception from a proprioceptive, but not a tactile, origin. By combining task-related data, rs-FC and behavioral performance, this study provided consistent results showing that hand movement perception was altered in the elderly, with a more pronounced deterioration of the proprioceptive system, likely due to the breakdown of inhibitory processes with aging. Humans can recognize living organisms and understand their actions solely on the basis of a small animated set of well-positioned points of light, i.e. by recognizing biological motion. Our aim was to determine whether this type of recognition and integration also occurs during the perception of one's own movements. The participants (60 females) were immersed with a virtual reality headset in a virtual environment, either dark or illuminated, in which they could see a humanoid avatar from a first-person perspective. The avatar's forearms were either realistic or represented by three points of light. Embodiment was successfully achieved through a 1-min period during which either the realistic or point-light avatar's forearms faithfully reproduced voluntary flexion-extension movements. Then, the "virtual mirror paradigm" was used to evoke kinesthetic illusions. In this paradigm, a passive flexion-extension of the participant's left arm was coupled with the movements of the avatar's forearms. This combined visuo-proprioceptive stimulation, was compared with unimodal stimulation (either visual or proprioceptive stimulation only). We found that combined visuo-proprioceptive stimulation with realistic avatars evoked more vivid kinesthetic illusions of a moving right forearm than unimodal stimulations, regardless of whether the virtual environment was dark or illuminated. Kinesthetic illusions also occurred with point-light avatars, albeit less frequently and a little less intense, and only when the visual environment was optimal for slow motion detection of the point-light display (lit environment). Multisensory effects are found when the input from single senses combines, and this has been well researched in the brain. Presently, we examined in humans the potential impact of visuo-proprioceptive interactions at the peripheral level, using microneurography, and compared it with a similar behavioral task. We used a paradigm where participants had either proprioceptive information only (no vision) or combined visual and proprioceptive signals (vision). We moved the foot to measure changes in the sensitivity of single muscle afferents, which can be altered by the descending fusimotor drive. Visual information interacted with proprioceptive information, where we found that for the same passive movement, the response of muscle afferents increased when the proprioceptive channel was the only source of information, as compared with when visual cues were added, regardless of the attentional level. Behaviorally, when participants looked at their foot moving, they more accurately judged differences between movement amplitudes, than in the absence of visual cues. These results impact our understanding of multisensory interactions throughout the nervous system, where the information from different senses can modify the sensitivity of peripheral receptors. This has clinical implications, where future strategies may modulate such visual signals during sensorimotor rehabilitation.

Kinesthesia, the perception of our own body movements, relies on the integration of proprioceptive information arising mostly from muscle spindles, which are sensory receptors in skeletal muscles. We recently showed that emotions alter the proprioceptive messages from such muscle afferents, making them more sensitive to muscle lengthening when participants were listening sad music. Presently, we investigated whether these changes in proprioceptive feedback relating to emotional state may affect the perception of limb movements. Kinesthetic acuity was tested in 20 healthy, young adults by imposing ramp-and-hold movements that consisted of either plantar flexion or dorsiflexion movements of the ankle at 0.04°/s, or no movement. These were imposed during four emotional conditions (listening to neutral, sad, or happy music, or no music). The participants were asked to relax and focus on music (or nothing), and then they shifted their focus to the direction of an incoming movement. Once this had finished, they were asked its direction. Muscle activity, heart rate, and electrodermal activity were recorded during each trial, and after each music condition the participants rated the emotion felt on a visual analog scale. The rating of the emotional content of the music corroborated with changes in physiological measures. Kinesthetic acuity was also affected by the emotional state and found to be larger during the sad condition, as compared to the no music or neutral conditions. We conclude that emotion can shape our perception of movements, which we show here where feeling sadness significantly increase our kinesthetic acuity, this may be functionally relevant for the preparation of appropriate behavioral responses., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Peripheral encoding of movement kinematics has been well-characterized, but there is little understanding of the relationship between movement kinematics and associated brain activation. We hypothesized that kinematics of passive movement is differentially represented in the sensorimotor network, reflecting the well-studied afferent responses to movement. A robotic forefinger manipulandum was used to induce passive kinematic stimuli and monitor interaction force in 41 healthy participants during whole-brain functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Levels of forefinger displacement amplitude and velocity were presented in flexion and extension. Increases in velocity were linearly associated with activation in contralateral primary somatosensory cortex (S1), bilateral secondary somatosensory cortex (S2), primary motor cortex, and supplementary motor area. No difference in activation was found for direction of the finger movement. Unexpectedly, S1 and S2 activation decreased nonlinearly with increasing displacement amplitude. We conclude that while straightforward relations were found with velocity, the complex neural representation of displacement amplitude suggests a more nuanced relationship between peripheral responses to kinematic stimuli and sensorimotor network activity. Cutaneous mechanoreceptors in skin surrounding joints can respond to the skin strain generated by movement, and thus provide proprioceptive cues. The objective of this experiment was to determine the contribution of skin feedback from the posterior ankle to position sense during passive movements. In 28 healthy adults (12 male), a topical anesthetized (n=14) or placebo cream (n=14) was applied to an area of skin on the posterior ankle that undergoes stretch and compression during ankle dorsi- and plantar-flexion. Position sense was assessed before and after anesthetization using a passive joint matching task (target angles: 6°, 12°, and 18° dorsiflexion and plantar flexion). Results showed that reducing skin feedback caused the perception that the ankles were aligned when the anesthetized ankle was relatively more dorsiflexed, suggesting that posterior ankle skin primarily signals the magnitude of skin stretch. Larger movement into dorsiflexion was likely necessary to provide enough stretch of muscle and surrounding intact skin to compensate for reduced signals from the anesthetized skin region. Reducing skin feedback also increased matching variability during larger movements. These findings suggest that skin feedback from the posterior ankle has a significant contribution to position sense during passive movement. Therefore, the sensitivity of skin surrounding the ankle could be important to consider in populations with reduced peripheral skin sensitivity as a result of ageing or neurological disorders., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Despite many previous studies on stiffness perception, few have investigated the exploratory procedures involved. This study evaluated whether stiffness range influences pressing movements and perception of force and displacement during stiffness discrimination tasks. Force and displacement data were obtained from 30 participants. Peak values of force and displacement, pressing duration and number of presses were analyzed. Two kinds of subjective evaluations were also recorded: perceived difference in force/displacement used to discriminate between specimens, and perceived effort. Although the number of presses and pressing duration were constant across a wide stiffness range, pressing strength was adjusted for the stiffness of objects, with harder specimens pressed more strongly. Further, even if the stiffnesses of two compared specimens were different, the pressing forces applied to the specimens approached the same magnitude at a higher stiffness range. Differences in force were most easily perceived at lower stiffness ranges, while displacement differences were perceived more readily at higher stiffness ranges. These results were consistent with those of previous studies. Upright people making goal-directed movements in dark environments often vertically undershoot remembered target locations when compared to performances in illuminated environments. In this study, we wanted to determine whether influences of the gravitational pull and/or type of muscle activation could explain differences in vertical endpoint precision between movements to visually remembered target locations with and without allocentric cues available. We also used a simple damping model for movement trajectories to describe potential differences in behavior between visual conditions. Subjects performed straight arm pointing movements to REAL target locations or remembered target locations in darkness (DARK) or normal room lighting (LIGHT). Performances were made from UPRIGHT and INVERTED (upside down) body orientations. Starting arm position (UP by the ear; DOWN on the thigh) also varied so that eccentric or concentric muscle contractions for arm flexion or extension movements occurred primarily along the earth-fixed vertical either with or against the gravitational pull. Effects of visual condition (LIGHT, DARK), body orientation (UPRIGHT, INVERTED), starting arm position (UP, DOWN), and target level (Near, Middle, Far) on elevation endpoint errors revealed that subject's errors in the DARK were more negative than those in the LIGHT. Errors correlated well with movement displacement to reveal the common vertical undershooting bias in darkness exacerbated by inverting the body or requiring greater movement excursions. Although influences of gravitational pull and muscle activation type could not explain differences between visual conditions, modeling revealed critically damped behavior in the DARK and under-damped behavior in the LIGHT to indicate muscle energy dissipation without vision.

Lateralized sensorimotor hand functions are often investigated separately or sequentially for each hand, e.g., in matching tasks, but rarely under more ecological circumstances where both hands move simultaneously. Using a novel bimanual paradigm in 21 young, healthy participants, this study addresses how postulated lateralized control processes of one hand influence control of the other hand across modalities. More specifically, in this paradigm one hand operates under visuomotor conditions, while the other hand receives no visual feedback and operates predominantly under kinesthetic control. Performance of the hand that does not receive visual feedback is compared between when moving alone (unimanual condition) and when moving together with the contralateral visually controlled hand (bimanual condition). Results suggest that during concurrent bimanual movements the 'invisible' hand benefits from specific control proficiencies of the 'visible' hand, indicating crossmodal and interhemispheric sharing of information that complements each hand's own strengths. • Unknown if proprioception differs for points on different body regions. • Young adults reached to touch stationary and moving body landmarks. • Blindfolded reaches to head/trunk targets had similar errors to reaches with vision. • Blindfolded reaches to limb targets were less accurate than to head/trunk targets. • Higher acuity may be due to higher daily frequency of reaches to head/trunk targets. We accurately sense locations of objects touching various points on the body and, if they are irritants, make accurate rapid movements to remove them. Such movements require accurate proprioception of orientation and motion of the reaching limb and of the target. However, it is unknown whether acuity of these sensations is similar for different points on the body. We investigated accuracy of comfortable speed reaching movements of the right index-tip by 10 subjects (five females) to touch 12 different body locations with and without vision with the body part stationary in different locations and moving in different directions. Reaching movements to points on the face/head and trunk had mean errors averaging less than 0.2 cm greater than under vision conditions. Mean errors for reaches to touch points on the left arm and digits were less accurate (p < 0.05), but average less than 1 cm relative to vision conditions. Mean errors for reaches to touch points on the left lower limb were least accurate (p < 0.05), with mean errors averaging 1.5–3.1 cm relative to movements made with vision. We conclude that there is high proprioceptive acuity for locations of points on axial structures and the left upper limb including the digits, which contrasts with previous reports of greatly distorted proprioceptive maps of the face/head and hand. Apparently low proprioceptive acuity for points on the leg may be task sensitive as many lower limb motor tasks can be performed accurately without vision. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It has been shown that the primary and secondary somatosensory cortex, as well as the supplementary motor area (SMA), are involved in central processing of proprioceptive signals during passive and active arm movements. However, it is not clear whether different cortical areas are involved in processing of different proprioceptive inputs (skin, joint, muscle receptors), what their relative contributions might be, where kinesthetic sensations are formed within the CNS, and how they interact when the full peripheral proprioceptive machinery acts. In this study we investigated the representation of the brain structures involved in the perception of passive limb movement and illusory movement generated by muscle tendon vibration. Changes in cortical activity as indicated by changes in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) were measured using positron emission tomography (PET). Twelve subjects were studied under four conditions: (1) passive flexion-extension movement (PM) of the left forearm; (2) induced illusions of movements (VI) similar to the real PM, induced by alternating vibration of biceps and triceps tendons (70–80 Hz) at the elbow; (3) alternating vibration of biceps and triceps tendons (with 20–50 Hz) without induced kinesthetic illusions (VN); and (4) rest condition (RE). The results show different patterns of cortex activation. In general, the activation during passive movement was higher in comparison with both kinds of vibration, and activation during vibrations with induced illusions of movement was more prominent than during vibrations without induced illusions. When the PM condition was contrasted with the other conditions we found the following areas of activation – the primary motor (MI) and somatosensory area (SI), the SMA and the supplementary somatosensory area (SSA). In conditions where passive movements and illusory movements were contrasted with rest, some temporal areas, namely primary and associative auditory cortex, were activated, as well as secondary somatosensory cortex (SII). Our data show that different proprioceptive inputs, which induce sensation of movement, are associated with differently located activation patterns in the SI/MI and SMA areas of the cortex. In general, the comparison of activation intensities under different functional conditions indicates the involvement of SII in stimulus perception generation and of the SI/MI and SMA areas in the processing of proprioceptive input. Activation of the primary and secondary auditory cortex might reflect the interaction between somatosensory and auditory systems in movement sense generation.
