Epidemiological data on the distribution of oral and maxillofacial diseases present in early childhood are scarce in the literature. This study analyzed the frequency of lesions biopsied in this region in children aged 0 to 3 years and sent for histopathological analysis in a reference oral pathology laboratory . Histopathological diagnostic data, lesion location, sex, and age were collected. Of the total of 93,950 records, 250 cases (0.27%) belonged to the age group from 0 to 3 years old. The most frequently diagnosed oral alterations were: mucocele (34/250; 13.6%); papilloma (11/250; 4.4%), giant cell fibroma (6/250; 2.4%), pyogenic granuloma (5/250; 2%) and hemangioma (3/250; 1.2%). The lip was the most affected site, followed by the gingiva and the tongue. These results generate information on the lesions most frequently diagnosed in early childhood, which facilitates the process of diagnosis and, consequently, treatment., (© 2023 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Despite being largely preventable, oral diseases are still a major public health problem in child populations in many parts of the world. Increasingly, however, oral diseases disproportionately affect socially disadvantaged groups in society. It is unjust and unfair that children and families from disadvantaged backgrounds experience high levels of oral diseases. This article analyzes oral diseases through a health disparities lens. Background: This is the first study that tested a Spanish version of the Child Perceptions Questionnaire (CPQ11-14 ) in a population-based sample., Aim: To assess the impact of oral health problems on OHRQoL in 11- to 14-year-old children., Design: Data from 473 11- to 14-year-old children were analysed. They were interviewed using the CPQ11-14. Examinations included dental caries, malocclusion, and traumatic dental injuries. Adjusted Poisson regression was used to associate different clinical conditions to the outcome., Results: Overall, 100% of children reported oral impacts (total CPQ11-14 score ≥ 1). Children aged 12- to 14 years old experienced a negative impact on all domains and total CPQ11-14 scores (P < 0.05); the increase in DMFT index showed a negative impact on the oral symptoms domain (RR = 1.01; P = 0.05, whereas Class III malocclusion showed a positive impact on the emotional well-being domain (RR = 0.71; P < 0.01). TDI (RR = 1.11; P = 0.01) and crown discoloration (RR = 1.23; P < 0.01) showed a negative impact on the emotional social well-being domain., Conclusion: Children aged 12- to 14 years old had a negative impact on all domains and total CPQ11-14 scores compared with those who are 11 years old. The increase in dental caries experience, presences of TDI and crown discoloration have a negative impact on some aspects of the children's OHRQoL. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of oral diseases and disorders on the oral-health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of children with CP, adjusting this impact by socioeconomic factors. Data were collected from 60 pairs of parents-children with CP. Parents answered the child oral health quality of life questionnaire (parental-caregivers perception questionnaire and family impact scale) and a socioeconomic questionnaire. Dental caries experience, traumatic dental injuries, malocclusions, bruxism, and dental fluorosis were also evaluated. The multivariate adjusted model showed that dental caries experience (p < 0.001) and the presence of bruxism had a negative impact (p = 0.046) on the OHRQoL. A greater family income had a positive impact on it (p < 0.001). Dental caries experience and bruxism are conditions strongly associated with a negative impact on OHRQoL of children with CP and their parents, but a higher family income can improve this negative impact., (© 2013 Special Care Dentistry Association and Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Children can exhibit a wide variety of oral pathologies, such as oral lesions, bone lesions, tumors, cysts and cutaneous lesions. Different techniques have been described for the treatment of these lesions, but all of them are invasive. This paper presents a series of cases that demonstrate the clinical efficacy of cryosurgery as an alternative to invasive surgical treatments of the most common oral lesions in children. This technique has been well tolerated by patients due to the absence of anesthesia, rapid healing and minimal bleeding. Cryotherapy has many applications in oral medicine and is an extremely useful alternative in patients to whom surgery is contraindicated due to age or medical history. It is a simple procedure to perform, minimally invasive, low-cost and very effective in pediatric dentistry clinic.

Background: The presence of oral diseases and disorders can produce an impact on the quality of life of preschool children and their parents, affecting their oral health and well-being. However, socioeconomic factors could confound this association, but it has not been yet tested at this age., Objective: To assess the impact of early childhood caries (ECC), traumatic dental injuries (TDI) and malocclusions on the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of children between 2 and 5 years of age adjusted by socioeconomic factors., Methods: Parents of 260 children answered the Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS) (six domains) on their perception of the children's OHRQoL and socioeconomic conditions. Two calibrated dentists (κ>0.8) examined the severity of ECC according to dmft index, and children were categorized into: 0=caries free; 1-5=low severity; ≥6=high severity. TDI and malocclusions were examined according to Andreasen & Andreasen (1994) classification and for the presence or absence of three anterior malocclusion traits (AMT), respectively. OHRQoL was measured through ECOHIS domain and total scores, and poisson regression was used to associate the different factors with the outcome., Results: In each domain and overall ECOHIS scores, the severity of ECC showed a negative impact on OHRQoL (P<0.001). TDI and AMT did not show a negative impact on OHRQoL nor in each domain (P>0.05). The increase in the child's age, higher household crowding, lower family income and mother working out of home were significantly associated with OHRQoL (P<0.05). The multivariate adjusted model showed that the high severity of ECC (RR=3.81; 95% CI=2.66, 5.46; P<0.001) was associated with greater negative impact on OHRQoL, while high family income was a protective factor for OHRQoL (RR=0.93; 95% CI=0.87, 0.99; P<0.001)., Conclusions: The severity of ECC and a lower family income had a negative impact on the OHRQoL of preschool children and their parents., (© 2010 John Wiley & Sons A/S.)
