Glacial retreat from the North Cascade Range after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) at approximately 21 ka until the end of the Pleistocene at 11.6 ka was complex and included both continental and alpine glaciers. Alpine valley glaciers reached their maximum extent before 21.4 ka, then underwent a punctuated retreat to valley heads. In the south, beyond the reach of ice sheet glaciation, several end moraines were deposited after the LGM. Moraines marking a re-advance of alpine glaciers to 5 km below modern glaciers were deposited from 13.7 to 11.6 ka.The Cordilleran Ice Sheet flowed south from near 52° north latitude in British Columbia into the North Cascades. At its maximum size the ice sheet covered more than 500 km2 and had a surface elevation of 2200 m in upper Skagit valley. Deglaciation commenced about 16 ka by frontal retreat of ice flanking the mountains. Surface lowering eventually exposed regional hydrologic divides and stranded ice masses more than 1000 m thick in valleys. Isolated fragments of the ice sheet disintegrated rapidly from 14.5 to 13.5 ka, with the pattern of deglaciation in each valley controlled by valley orientation, topography, and climate. Like alpine glaciers to the south, retreat of the ice sheet remnants was slowed by millennial scale climate fluctuations that produced at least one large recessional moraine, and multiple lateral moraines and kame terraces from elevations of 200-1400 m in most valleys. Large volumes of glacial meltwater flowed through the North Cascades and was concentrated in the Skagit and Methow rivers. Outburst floods from deep proglacial lakes spilled across divides and down steep canyons, depositing coarse gravel terraces and alluvial fans at valley junctions.Climate at the LGM was characterized by a mean summer temperature 6 to 7 ºC cooler than today, and 40% lower mean annual precipitation. Persistence of this climate for thousands of years before the LGM caused a 750-1000 m decrease in alpine glacier equilibrium line altitudes (ELA). In the southern North Cascades at 16 ka, glacial ELAs were 500-700 m lower than today, and during advances from 13.7 to 11.6 ka alpine glacier ELAs were 200-400 m lower.

This is a synthesis of the glacial history of the northern Urals undertaken using published works and the results of geological surveys as well as recent geochronometric and remote sensing data. The conclusions differ from the classical model that considers the Urals as an important source of glacial ice and partly from the modern reconstructions. The principal supporting evidence for the conventional model – Uralian erratics found on the adjacent plains – is ambiguous because Uralian clasts were also delivered by a thick external ice sheet overriding the mountains during the Middle Pleistocene. Alternative evidence presented in this paper indicates that in the late Quaternary the Ural mountains produced only valley glaciers that partly coalesced in the western piedmont to form large piedmont lobes. The last maximum glaciation occurred in the Early Valdaian time at c. 70–90 ka when glacial ice from the Kara shelf invaded the lowlands and some montane valleys but an icecap over the mountains was not formed. The moraines of the alpine glaciation are preserved only beyond the limits of the Kara ice sheet and therefore cannot be younger than MIS 4. More limited glaciation during MIS 2 generated small alpine moraines around the cirques of the western Urals (Mangerud et al. 2008: Quaternary Science Reviews 27, 1047). The largest moraines of Transuralia were probably produced by the outlet glaciers of a Middle Pleistocene ice sheet that formed on the western plains and discharged across the Polar Urals. The resultant scheme of limited mountain glaciation is possibly also applicable as a model for older glacial cycles.

Glacial-geomorphic studies provide vital information to make inferences about the effect of glacial advance and retreat on the geomorphology of an area. In the present study, glacial-geomorphic landforms of the Thajwas glacial valley in the upper reaches of the Indus, Kashmir Himalayas were mapped using geospatial technology validated with GPS-based field observations and ground photography. The glacial-geomorphic landforms were digitized using ASTER DEM (30 m resolution), Landsat ETM+ satellite imagery (30 m resolution) and Google Earth (1 m resolution) data. Results showed that Google Earth imagery, supported by field validation, is very useful for the interpretation of glacial-geomorphic landscapes and relief features at micro- and meso-scales. However, morphometric characteristics of landforms are best obtained using DEM overlaid onto the Landsat ETM+ satellite data. Glaciers in the valley are presently confined along the south and southwestern slopes. However, the significant role played by glaciers in shaping the geomorphic landforms and their subsequent preservation within the scenic landscape under the Late Quaternary climatic conditions are remarkably evident. The glacial-geomorphic landforms, especially terminal moraine, glacial trough and cirques observed in the valley aided the reconstruction of palaeo-glacial setting of the area. Morphology, shape and location of terminal and lateral moraine ridges were used to establish the palaeo-glacial extents, glacial volume and the number of glacial advances of the Thajwas glacier. The maximum elevation of the lateral moraines was used to define the former Equilibrium-Line Altitude (ELA). The greater rock excavation to form a large valley during the last glacial maximum might have induced isostatic rock uplift/exhumation in the glacier source area. It is observed that the concomitant retreat of the north-facing glacial cirques has played an important role in expanding the glacial valley and limiting the topographic relief.

Evidence of widespread alpine glaciations during the Late Pleistocene in mid-latitudes has long attracted attention of researchers. However, there were no studies that contain absolute ages in the Lesser Caucasus despite the fact that it is one of the major glaciated regions in Eurasia. Here, we present first cosmogenic 36Cl surface exposure ages from the Karcal Mountains (41.24° N, 42.06° E, 3431 m a.s.l., above sea level) which is located in the most western part of the Lesser Caucasus in the northeastern Anatolia. In the Karcal Mountains, there are numerous valleys that have experienced significant glaciations since Late Pleistocene. We have investigated one of the largest valleys, the east-facing Karcal Valley, that hosts even a small (2926 m a.s.l.) recent glacier located at above 3000 m a.s.l. Fossil and recent rock glaciers along with lateral and recessional moraines exist in the valley. We conducted the study in two stages. First, we mapped the geomorphological units in the Karcal Valley in detail based on our field works and aerial photography. Later, we collected 10 rock samples from the fossil rock glacier and recessional moraines for cosmogenic 36Cl surface exposure dating. The results outline a glacial chronology that is typical of the Last Glacial Maximum. Although the maximum extent and timing of the glaciation is not exactly known as lateral and terminal moraines were not suitable for sampling, recessional moraines indicate that the Karcal Valley palaeoglacier deglaciation started at least 19.9 ± 1.2 ka ago. Fossil rock glacier samples were dated to 15.7 ± 1.3 ka. These quantitative results are first in the Lesser Caucasus and compatible with previous ages obtained from other valleys in the nearby Eastern Black Sea region, Anatolian and some of the European Mountains.

Quaternary valley fills and landforms in the Waqia valley of the Chinese Pamir were examined using geomorphic mapping, geomorphic and sedimentological analysis of landforms and sediments, and cosmogenic 10Be surface exposure dating. Six sets of moraines (M-1 to M-6) are identified and date to the penultimate or an older glacial cycle (M-1), penultimate glacial cycle (M-2), early last glacial and probably Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage (MIS) 4 (M-3), MIS 2 (M-4), Late Glacial (M-5), and early Holocene (M-6). Younger moraines are also present, but these were not examined in detail. Alluvial fans and outwash/river terraces are present throughout the valley. Four surfaces on alluvial fans and river terraces were dated to ~ 580 ka (T-1), ~ 120 ka (T-2), ~ 100 ka (T-3), and ~ 70 ka (T-4). Large landslide and lacustrine deposits are common within the valley fills and represent periods of major slope instability and possible damming of drainages. Glacial processes dominate the western side of the valley; landsliding is the leading process on its eastern side. Defining the nature and timing of landform formation in this valley highlights the punctuated nature of landform evolution in the Himalaya and Tibet and provides a framework for considering the abundant valley fill successions elsewhere in the orogen.

In the present study, the retreat of Kolahoi glacier was mapped from the satellite observations and historical maps supplemented by the extensive field observations to understand the recent deglaciation of the Kolahoi valley, Kashmir Himalaya, India. The glacier has retreated by 2.85 km during the last 157 years from 1857 to 2014 with an average retreat of about 18.2 m year−1; however, the glacier snout has shown higher recession during the last decade. The geomorphological evidence reveals glaciation of the Kolahoi valley during the Quaternary. These evidences include glacial till at Pahalgam and Aru besides terminal and lateral moraines at Lidderwat, Satlanjan and Kolahoi Gunj in the Kolahoi valley. The glacier has shrunk by 2.81 km2 during the last 51 years (1962–2013) losing an ice volume of 0.30 km3. The observed glacier changes were correlated with the climate data from PMIP3-CMIP5 models. The temperatures are predicted to increase almost ten times more than that observed during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). The future temperature is predicted to rise between 0.18 °C and 0.61 °C per decade under RCP 2.6 and RCP 8.5 respectively. The projected rise in the temperature, if realized, will have an adverse effect on the glaciers and would, in all likelihood, adversely affect the water availability for various sectors in the region.

Reconstruction based on the geomorphology, lateral moraine stratigraphy, and limited optical chronology indicate that the monsoon-dominated Kosa Valley experienced four glacial advances during the late glacial to late Holocene. The oldest and most extensive glaciation, which is termed as Raj Bank Stage-1 (RBS-1), is represented by the degraded moraine ridge. This glaciation remains undated; however, the chronology of outwash terrace gravel dated to 12.7 ± 1.3 ka indicates that the RBS-1 probably represents the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). The second glacial advance (RBS-2) is preserved as a curvilinear lateral moraine and is dated to 6.1 ± 0.4 ka. The third glacial advance viz. RBS-3 is bracketed between 5.0 ± 0.5 and 4.0 ± 0.4 ka. Following this, the glacier receded in pulses that are represented by two distinct recessional moraines (RBS-3a and b). The forth glacial stage (RBS-4), which is dated between 2.2 ± 0.2 and 1.6 ± 0.2 ka, shows a pulsating recession and is represented by a prominent recessional moraine (RBS-4a). Whereas, presence of unconsolidated, poorly defined moraine mounds proximal to the glacier snout are ascribed as neoglacial advance corresponding to the Little Ice Age (LIA). With the limited chronometric data, we speculated that the glaciation was driven during the weak to moderate Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) aided by lowered temperature. Presence of recessional moraines associated with mid-Holocene glacial phase indicate that the monsoon-dominated glaciers respond sensitively to minor (sub-millennial scale) changes in temperature and precipitation conditions. The observations are broadly in accordance with the studies carried out in other monsoon-dominated valleys in the central Himalaya, implying that in ISM dominated regions, lowered temperature seems to be the major driver of glaciations during the late glacial to late Holocene.

Well-preserved Late Glacial moraines in the Barenduo and Yuqiongqu valleys on the eastern slope of the Samdainkangsang Peak present an opportunity to reconstruct glacier extents and examine the character of the climate during the Late Glacial stage in the Nyaiqentanggulha Mountains. This study employs a coupled mass-balance and ice-flow model to reconstruct the glacier extents in the two valleys and assess the magnitudes of temperature and precipitation change during the Late Glacial period. Model results indicate that during the Late Glacial, the Barenduo valley contained an ice volume of 1.67×108 m3, with the equilibrium-line altitude (ELA) being ~5500 m asl; and the Yuqiongqu valley had an ice volume of 5.56×108 m3, with the ELA being ~5470 m asl. A climate scenario, temperature depression of 2.6–2.8°C and 60–70%, percent of modern (1981–2010) precipitation, can sustain both of the Late Glacial glacier extents in the two valleys. A 50% increase or decrease from modern precipitation would have been coupled with the respective Late Glacial temperature depressions of 1.6 and 3.0°C in the Barenduo valley, and 2.1 and 2.8°C in the Yuqiongqu valley.

Mountain glaciers advance and retreat primarily in response to changes in climate. Establishing the timing and magnitude of mountain glacier fluctuations from geological records can thus help to identify the drivers and mechanisms of past climate change. In this study, we use cosmogenic 3He surface exposure dating and tephrochronology to constrain the timing of past glaciation on Tongariro massif in central North Island, New Zealand (39°S). Exposure ages from moraine boulders show that valley glaciation persisted between c. 30–18 ka, which coincides with the global Last Glacial Maximum. Reinterpretation of moraine tephrostratigraphy, using major element geochemistry analysis, shows that ice retreat and climatic amelioration at the last glacial termination was well underway prior to 14 ka. The equilibrium line altitude in central North Island, during the Last Glacial Maximum, was c. 1400–1550 m above sea level, which is c. 930–1080 m lower than present. Considering the uncertainties in the glacial reconstruction and temperature lapse rates, we estimate that this equilibrium line altitude lowering equates to a temperature depression of 5.6 ± 1.1 °C, relative to present. Our mapping and surface exposure dating also show evidence for an earlier period of glaciation, of similar magnitude to the Last Glacial Maximum, which culminated prior to 57 ka, probably during Marine Isotope Stage 4. Good agreement between the timing and magnitude of glacier fluctuations in central North Island and the Southern Alps indicate a response to a common climatic forcing during the last glacial cycle.

Successively smaller glacial extents have been proposed for continental Eurasia during the stadials of the last glacial period leading up to the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). At the same time the large mountainous region east of Lake Baikal, Transbaikalia, has remained unexplored in terms of glacial chronology despite clear geomorphological evidence of substantial past glaciations. We have applied cosmogenic Be-10 exposure dating and optically stimulated luminescence to establish the first quantitative glacial chronology for this region. Based on eighteen exposure ages from five moraine complexes, we propose that large mountain ice fields existed in the Kodar and Udokan mountains during Oxygen Isotope Stage 2, commensurate with the global LGM. These ice fields fed valley glaciers (>100 km in length) reaching down to the Chara Depression between the Kodar and Udokan mountains and to the valley of the Vitim River northwest of the Kodar Mountains. Two of the investigated moraines date to the Late Glacial, but indications of incomplete exposure among some of the sampled boulders obscure the specific details of the post-LGM glacial history. In addition to the LGM ice fields in the highest mountains of Transbaikalia, we report geomorphological evidence of a much more extensive, ice-cap type glaciation at a time that is yet to be firmly resolved. The Piec Stawow Polskich-Roztoka Valley in the High Tatras (Western Carpathians) features typical alpine-type relief with a deeply incised glacial trough and large, compound trough head cirque. The prominent hypsographic maximum in the valley (1680–2000 m) along with a broad cirque bottom had provided a vast space for recording glacial and periglacial landforms, specifically the most recent Lateglacial advances. The valley has been intensively studied before in the context of glacial chronology. In this paper, we re-establish the post-Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) glacial chronology of the valley via detailed geomorphologic mapping, equilibrium line altitude (ELA) reconstruction, and Schmidt hammer (SH) dating, along with a critical review of previously published cosmogenic exposure age data ( 36 Cl) and lacustrine sediment chronology. Our results indicate that the first four of the five distinguished Lateglacial stages (Roztoka I–III, Pusta I) occurred before the Bolling/Allerod (B/A) interstadial; thus, virtually the entire valley became deglaciated in course of the Oldest Dryas cold phase. A distinct reorganization of deglacial patterns from valley-type to marginal-type occurred before B/A warming when the ELA increased above the valley hypsographic maximum concentrated at the cirque bottom elevation. It shows that noticeable deglaciation step can be caused due to topographic reason with a minimal climate forcing. This points also to an important role of glaciated valley hypsography in regulating the distribution of moraines which is rarely taken into account in paleoglaciological reconstructions. We infer that glaciers vanished in the Tatra Mountains during the B/A interstadial. Later, a renewed advance during the Younger Dryas (Pusta II) formed a nearly continuous, festoon shaped pattern of moraines and rock glaciers in close distance to cirque backwalls. Furthermore, we discus some paleoenvironmental significance of the geomorphological record in the valley, as well, the applicability of SH dating in constructing glacial chronology.

Detailed field mapping of glacial and paraglacial landforms supported by optical and radiocarbon dating is used to reconstruct the history of late Quaternary glaciation and landform evolution in the Trans Himalayan region of the upper Dhauliganga valley. The study identifies four events of glaciations with decreasing magnitude which are termed as Purvi Kamet Stage -Ia (PKS-Ia), PKS-Ib, PKS-II, PKS-III and PKS-IV respectively. The oldest PKS-Ia and Ib are assigned the Marine Isotopic Stgae-3 (MIS-3), the PKS-II to the Last Glacial Maximum (MIS-2), PKS-III dated to 7.9 ± 0.7 ka, and the PKS-IV is dated to 3.4 ± 0.3 ka and 1.9 ± 0.2 ka respectively. The largest valley glaciations viz. the (PKS-Ia) occurred during the strengthened summer monsoon corresponding to the MIS-3, following this, the recessional moraines (PKS-Ib) represent the gradual decline in summer monsoon towards the later part of MIS-3. The valley responded to the global Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), which is represented by the PKS-II moraine implying the influence of strengthened mid-latitude westerlies during the LGM. The post-LGM deglaciation was associated with the onset of summer monsoon and is represented by the deposition of four distinct outwash gravel terraces. The early Holocene PKS-III glaciation occurred around 7.9 ± 0.7 ka and broadly coincides with the early Holocene cooling event (8.2 ka). This was followed by the deposition of stratified scree deposits and the alluvial fan (between 5.5 ka and 3 ka) during the mid to late Holocene aridity. This was followed by marginal re-advancement of the valley glacier (viz. PKS-IV) during the late Holocene cool and moist climate. Although glaciers respond to a combination of temperature and precipitation changes, however during the Holocene it seems that temperature played a major role in driving the glaciation.

Mt Chelmos in the Peloponnesus was glaciated by a plateau ice field during the most extensive Pleistocene glaciation. Valley glaciers radiated out from an ice field over the central plateau of the massif. The largest glaciations are likely to be Middle Pleistocene in age. Smaller valley and cirque glaciers formed later and boulders on the moraines of these glacial phases have been dated using 36Cl terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide exposure dating. These ages indicate a Late Pleistocene age with glacier advance/stabilization at 40?30 ka, glacier retreat at 23?21 ka and advance/stabilization at 13?10 ka. This indicates that the glacial maximum of the last cold stage occurred during Marine Isotope Stage 3, several thousand years before the global Last Glacial Maximum (Marine Isotope Stage 2). The last phase of moraine-building occurred at the end of the Pleistocene, possibly during the Younger Dryas.

During the late Quaternary, the Southern Alps of New Zealand experienced multiple episodes of glaciation with large piedmont glaciers reaching the coastal plains in the west and expanding into the eastern alpine forelands. Here, we present a new 10Be exposure age chronology for a moraine sequence in the Waimakariri Valley (N-Canterbury), which has long been used as a reference record for correlating glacial events across New Zealand and the wider Southern Hemisphere. Our data indicate that the Waimakariri glacier reached its maximum last glaciation extent prior to ∼26 ka well before the global last glaciation maximum (LGM). This was followed by a gradual reduction in ice volume and the abandonment of the innermost LGM moraines at about 17.5 ka. Significantly, we find that during its maximum extent, the Waimakariri glacier overflowed the Avoca Plateau, previously believed to represent a mid-Pleistocene glacial surface (i.e. MIS 8). At the same time, the glacier extended to a position downstream of the Waimakariri Gorge, some 15 km beyond the previously mapped LGM ice limit. We use a simple steady-state mass balance model to test the sensitivity of past glacial accumulation to various climatic parameters, and to evaluate possible climate scenarios capable of generating the ice volume required to reach the full local-LGM extent. Model outcomes indicate that under New Zealand's oceanic setting, a cooling of 5 °C, assuming modern precipitation levels, or a cooling of 6.5 °C, assuming a one third reduction in precipitation, would suffice to drive the Waimakariri glacier to the eastern alpine forelands (Canterbury Plains). Our findings demonstrate that the scale of LGM glaciation in the Waimakariri Valley and adjacent major catchments, both in terms of ice volume and downvalley ice extent, has been significantly underestimated. Our observation that high-lying glacial surfaces, so far believed to represent much older glacial episodes, were glaciated during the LGM, challenges the conventional geomorphic model of glaciation in New Zealand where the vertical arrangement of glacial landform-associations is used to assign successively older glaciation ages.

We present a glacial geomorphological map at a scale of 1:200,000 of the Maidika region in the southeastern part of the central Tibetan Plateau covering 13,600 km2. Based on the 90 m resolution SRTM elevation model, the 30 m resolution ASTER GDEM elevation model, and the Landsat ETM+ satellite imagery of 30/15 m resolution, we have mapped glacial valleys, marginal moraines, glacial lineations, and hummocky terrain. Glacial landforms occur frequently and indicate extensive past glaciation with alpine style valley glaciers as well as more extensive ice fields. Of particular interest is the presence of glacial lineation swarms, which is unusual for the Tibetan Plateau glacial landform record. Based on the distribution of glacial landforms, we present a generalized maximum glacial extent reconstruction covering 6045 km2 or 44% of the map.

We present a glacial geomorphological map (1:825,000) of the Parlung Zangbo Valley in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau based on Google Earth imagery and the 30 m ASTER Global Digital Elevation Model (ASTER GDEM). The mapped region covers 2.9 × 104 km2, including abundant glacial landforms such as glacial valleys, marginal moraines (including terminal moraines and lateral moraines), and hummocky moraines. Glacial valleys are distributed mainly above 2100 m a.s.l. with lengths from 1 to 130 km. Multiple marginal moraines occur along the glacial valleys, indicating the presence of multiple glacial events. The lowest moraines are distributed mainly at the mouth of each valley between 2400 and 4000 m a.s.l. Hummocky moraines are mainly distributed in the two main tributary valleys: the Bodui Zangbo Valley and the Yigong Zangbo Valley. One ice-dammed paleolake was mapped with a surface area of 12.5 km2. The mapped glacial features (including contemporary glaciers) cover 1.2 × 104 km2, about 40% of the mapped area, representing the minimum extent of maximum glaciation. This map provides a useful data set for reconstructing the timing and extent of paleoglaciations in this area.

The study of glacial geomorphology in the Cantabrian Mountains, a mountain range that extends 460 km along the northern coast of the Iberian Peninsula (SW Europe), started late in the 19th century and continues nowadays with a growing number of research papers. However, the number and timing of glaciations remains poorly understood, partially due to the still limited number of numerical ages. Its southerly location and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean make this mountain range potentially sensitive to past climate fluctuations. This work updates the glacial knowledge evolution for the whole range, from the Queixa-Invernadoiro Massif to the Basque Mountains, reviewing: (i) the history of glacial research since the late 19th century; (ii) the methodological approaches applied to reconstruct both the spatial extent and timing of past glacial stages; and (iii) the main geomorphological and geochronological evidence reported until date, including glacial features attributed to the Last Glacial Cycle (last 120 ka) and previous glaciations. According to current knowledge, glaciers extended over the Cantabrian Mountains covering a total area of 3150 km2, showing asymmetric development conditioned by variations of the topographic configuration and moisture supply along the range. Available geochronology based on radiocarbon, optically stimulated luminescence and terrestrial cosmogenic nuclides suggests the occurrence of at least 2 glacial advances during the Last Glacial Cycle: (i) a glacial maximum stage that took place at a minimum age of 36–45 ka (Marine Isotope Stage 3) and (ii) a second glacial advance at 19–23 ka (MIS 2). In some areas the extent of the glacier tongues during the second glacial advance was comparable to previous glacial maximum and was followed by glacial retreat conditions with formation of recessional moraines. Asynchronous glacial maximum conditions have been reported only for the Castro Valnera (MIS 4, 3 numerical ages) and Queixa-Invernadoiro (MIS 6, 1 numerical age) massifs until now. Finally, geomorphological evidence reported in Picos de Europa has been attributed to prior glaciations and correlated to cold conditions recorded during MIS 12 and MIS 22 based on a very limited number of numerical ages.

The Tailan River originates on the southern slope of Tumur Peak, the largest center of modern glaciation in the Tianshan Range. Five moraine complexes and associated fluvioglacial deposits in this valley record a complex history of Quaternary glacial cycles and landform evolution. Electron spin resonance (ESR) dating of glacial sediments was carried out using germanium (Ge) centers in quartz grains, which are sensitive to both sunlight and grinding. Based on the dating results as well as geomorphic and stratigraphic data, the Piyazilike end moraines (the second moraine complex) were deposited during Neoglaciation (the largest glacial advances during the last 3–4 ka in western China) and an early Holocene glacial advance, the third set of moraines was deposited in marine isotope stage (MIS) 2–4, and the glacial landforms of the Tailan glaciation (the fourth moraine complex), which include hummocky moraines on the piedmont, were formed in MIS 6 (penultimate glaciation). The end moraines of the innermost moraine complex (the first moraine complex) are inferred to have been deposited during the Little Ice Age (LIA). Thus the landforms and dates indicate compound valley glaciers from the LIA to MIS 2–4, and piedmont glaciers during MIS 6. The oldest tills studied belong to the “Kokdepsang Glacial Stage”, and occur on a high plateau. Based on similar glacial landforms (glacial deposits on a high plateau and a high glacial terrace) and their ESR ages in adjacent valleys on the southern slope of Tumur Peak, the Kokdepsang Glacial Stage is assigned to MIS 12.

Southern South America contains a glacial geomorphological record that spans the past million years and has the potential to provide palaeoclimate information for several glacial periods in Earth's history. In central Patagonia, two major outlet glaciers of the former Patagonian Ice Sheet carved deep basins ∼50 km wide and extending over 100 km into the Andean plain east of the mountain front. A succession of nested glacial moraines offers the possibility of determining when the ice lobes advanced and whether such advances occurred synchronously. The existing chronology, which was obtained using different methods in each valley, indicates the penultimate moraines differ in age by a full glacial cycle. Here, we test this hypothesis further using a uniform methodology that combines cosmogenic nuclide ages from moraine boulders, moraine cobbles and outwash cobbles. 10 Be concentrations in eighteen outwash cobbles from the Moreno outwash terrace in the Lago Buenos Aires valley yield surface exposure ages of 169–269 ka. We find 10 Be inheritance is low and therefore use the oldest surface cobbles to date the deposit at 260–270 ka, which is indistinguishable from the age obtained in the neighbouring Lago Pueyrredon valley. This suggests a regionally significant glaciation during Marine Isotope Stage 8, and broad interhemispheric synchrony of glacial maxima during the mid to late Pleistocene. Finally, we find the dated outwash terrace is 70–100 ka older than the associated moraines. On the basis of geomorphological observations, we suggest this difference can be explained by exhumation of moraine boulders.

The inland valleys of New Zealand’s South Island were heavily glaciated during the last glacial cycle. Subsequent fluvial incision has eroded out glacial deposits from the valleys in many locations, making it difficult to reconstruct glacial dynamics and chronology. The Brabazon and Butler Downs lie in a fault-controlled intra-montaine basin that has been largely protected from fluvial erosion and the area contains extensive evidence for multiple glacial margins. This paper presents a detailed glacial geomorphology map of the Brabazon and Butler Downs at a scale of 1:20,000. Glacial landforms have been mapped and subdivided into three main zones: an upper zone distinguished by a flight of kame terraces, a middle zone containing kettles and meltwater channels, and a lower zone of lateral moraines. The new map provides insight into former glacial environments in the region and provides a related framework for future paleoclimate reconstructions.

Our study in the Başyayla Valley in northeastern Anatolia showed evidence of four glacier advances that built terminal and lateral moraines. Surface exposure dating of boulders on these moraines showed that the Maximum Ice Extent (MIE) was asynchronous with the global Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; 22.1 ± 4.3 thousand years; ka). The local {MIE} took place at least 57.0 ± 3.5 ka ago. The extent of the Başyayla Glacier during this advance is not known exactly because the boulders are only preserved on a lateral moraine. The next advance was prior to 41.5 ± 2.5 ka, and it descended down the valley to approximately 2320 m above sea level (m a.s.l.), with a glacier length of 5.3 km. During the early global LGM, the Başyayla Glacier extended for a distance of 4.9 km down to approx. 2430 m a.s.l. The last recorded advance occurred during the global LGM. This extension was 0.7 km smaller than the local {MIE} and its terminus reached 2490 m a.s.l. only. The exposure ages of boulders in a retreat position at an altitude of approx. 3045 m a.s.l. indicate that the valley has remained ice-free since the Lateglacial period. Therefore, the Lateglacial extent was limited to the cirque system in the uppermost part of the catchment. Furthermore, Holocene glacier oscillations seem to be either absent or restricted to solifluction in the whole catchment and to rock glacier movements in the southern tributary of the Başyayla Valley system.

The glacial history of the Tons River Valley reveals significant changes in the glacier extent during the late Quaternary driven by regional and global climatic changes. The successions of moraines in glaciated valley of the upper Tons River, Garhwal Himalaya, provide evidence of at least five glacial advances during the late Quaternary Period. This study discusses about the synchronicity of Himalayan glaciers and comparison between results of Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) and Cosmogenic Radio Nuclide (CRN 10Be) dates. The OSL dates of moraine sediments deposited by glacier in the upper Tons valley show parallelism with the ages deduced from the CRN of 10Be by Scherler et al. in the same area. The five episodes of glacier advances are dated at 20 ± 3, 16 ± 2, 8 ± 1.2, 6 ± 0.7 and 3 ± 0.6 kyr (between Marine Isotope Stages (MISs) I and II). Two of the more extensive phases of glaciation were during the early and later parts of MIS II, which attributed to the lower temperature and enhanced the mid-latitude westerlies. During the periods between 20 ± 3 kyr and present day, the glacier lost ~47 km2 (33%) area, 0.88 × 1010 m3 water equivalent (w.e.) volume with the rate of 0.44 × 106 m3 w.e./yr, which is close to the current melting rates of Central Himalayan glaciers. The estimation of equilibrium line altitude (ELA) using these dates and geomorphic data suggests a vertical shift of ~451 m for Jaundhar Glacier and ~598 m for Bandarpunch Glacier since 20 kyr. The results from Tons valley glaciation show synchronicity with the records of glacial advancements from the other Himalayan glacier valleys. These data allow testing of two widely used dating techniques and importance of global climate change and monsoon influence on glaciation in the Himalaya.

It is highly debated whether glacial advances on the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau (QTP) occurred as a response to temperature cooling, or whether they were forced by an increase in moisture brought by the intensive Indian summer monsoon. We here report a case study investigating this issue. Multiple moraine series in the Yingpu Valley, Queer Shan ranges of the Hengduan Mountains, and eastern QTP, provide an excellent archive for examining the timing and trigger mechanism of glacier fluctuations. Twenty-seven optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) samples of glacial sediments were collected from this valley. The quartz OSL ages show that the moraine series of Y-1, I, M and O were formed during the Late Holocene, Late Glacial, the global Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage (MIS) 3 (likely mid-MIS-3). The youngest Y-2 moraines probably formed during the Little Ice Age (LIA). The oldest H moraines formed before MIS-3. We found that glacial advances during the late Quaternary at the Yingpu Valley responded to cold stages or cold events rather than episodes of enhanced summer monsoon and moisture. As a result, glaciers in the monsoonal Hengduan Mountains were mainly triggered by changes in temperature. Millennial time scale temperature oscillations might have caused the multiple glacial advances.

We present multibeam swath bathymetric surveys of the major fjords surrounding the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia to characterise the glacial geomorphology and to identify the relative timings and extent of past glacial advance and retreat. Bathymetry data revealed a range of glacial features including terminal, retreat and truncated moraines, deep (distal) outer and shallow (proximal) inner basins and cross shelf troughs. These provide evidence of glacial advance and retreat through several glacial cycles. A near consistent pattern of large scale submarine geomorphological features was observed in the different fjords suggesting a similar response of margins of the island ice cap to past climate forcing. A relative chronology based on the relationships between the submarine features with their radiocarbon and cosmogenic isotope dated terrestrial counterparts suggests that widely observed inner basin moraines date from the last major glacial advance or Last Glacial Maximum, while deep basin moraines may date from an earlier (pre-LGM) more extensive glaciation, which we speculate corresponds to MIS6. On the sides of the deep basins a series of truncated moraines show ice advance positions from preceding glacial periods. The cross shelf troughs, and mid-trough moraines are interpreted as the product of much more extensive glaciations that predate the fjord geomorphology mapped here, thus possibly older than MIS6. This hypothesis would suggest that South Georgia followed a glacial history similar to that of central Patagonia (46°S) where a series of Pleistocene glaciations (of MIS 20 and younger) extended beyond LGM limits, with the most extensive glacial advance occurring at c. 1.1 Ma.

Goriganga valley, which is located in the transition zone between the dry steppe of the Tibetan plateau in the north and the sub-humid Himalayan climate in the south, has preserved four events of glaciation with decreasing magnitude. The oldest Stage-I glaciation is represented by a ∼12.5 km long discontinuous diamictite ridge which terminates north of Rilkot (∼3100 m asl). The Stage-II glaciation is represented by sub-rounded and partially eroded lateral moraines and terminates around Martoli village (∼3240 m asl). The Stage-III and IV glacial moraines are sharp crested, unstable and terminate proximal to the present day glacier at ∼3640 m asl and ∼3740 m asl respectively. The Stage-II moraines have been optically dated between 25 ± 2 ka and 22 ± 1 ka implying that glacier expanded during the global Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). This is contrary to the suggestion that during Last Glacial maximum (LGM) glaciation was limited in extent due to weak Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) in the monsoon dominated regions of the Himalaya. We ascribe the LGM glaciations to a combination of the lowered temperature and enhanced mid-latitude westerlies. Following the LGM glaciation, Goriganga valley experienced two major pulses of deglaciation. The older event is dated between 16 and 12 ka and is coeval with the initiation of the ISM whereas the younger events (10−8 ka) represent the early to mid-Holocene strengthened ISM. The Stage-III and IV glaciations which terminated proximal to the modern glacier are speculated to occur during the mid-Holocene and Little Ice Age (LIA) respectively.

The late Quaternary glacial history of the Nun-Kun massif, located on the boundary between the Greater Himalaya and the Zanskar range in northwestern India, was reconstructed. On the basis of morphostratigraphy and 10Be dating of glacial landforms (moraines and glacial trimlines), five glacial stages were recognized and defined, namely: (i) the Achambur glacial stage dated to Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage 3 to 4 (38.7–62.7 ka); (ii) the Tongul glacial stage dated to the early part of the Lateglacial (16.7–17.4 ka); (iii) the Amantick glacial stage dated to the later part of the Lateglacial (14.3 ka, 11.7–12.4 ka); (iv) the Lomp glacial stage dated to the Little Ice Age; and (v) the Tanak glacial stage, which has the youngest moraines, probably dating to the last few decades or so. Present and former equilibrium-line altitudes (ELAs) were calculated using the standard area accumulation ratio method. The average present-day ELA of ∼4790 m above sea level in the Greater Himalaya is lower than those in the Ladakh and Zanskar ranges, namely 5380 and ∼5900 m a.s.l., respectively. The ELA in the Zanskar range is higher than in the Ladakh range, possibly due to the higher peaks in the Ladakh range that are able to more effectively capture and store snow and ice. ELA depressions decrease towards the Ladakh range (i.e. inner Plateau). Peat beds interbedded with aeolian deposits that cap the terminal moraine of Tarangoz Glacier suggest millennial-time-scale climate change throughout the Holocene, with soil formation times at c. 1.5, c. 3.4 and c. 5.2 ka, probably coinciding with Holocene abrupt climate change events. Given the style and timing of glaciation in the study area, it is likely that climate in the Nun-Kun region is linked to Northern Hemisphere climate oscillations with teleconnections via the mid-latitude westerlies.

Palaeoglacial reconstruction based on geomorphological mapping in the Pindari glacier valley, Alaknanda basin (Central Himalaya), has revealed five glacial stages with decreasing magnitude. The oldest and most extensive stage-I glaciation deposited sediments at ∼2200 masl (Khati village). The stage-II glaciation was around 7 km long and luminescence dated to 25 ± 2 ka, and has deposits at 3200 masl (Phurkia village). Stage-III glaciation is represented by degraded linear moraine ridges and is dated to 6 ± 1 ka and its remnants can be found around 3850 masl. A sharp crested crescentic moraine extending from around 3650 masl to 3900 masl is attributed to stage-IV glaciation and is dated to 3 ± 1 ka. Following this, there appears to have been a gradual recession in Pindari glacier as indicated by four sharp crested unconsolidated moraines (stage-V) on the valley floor which abuts the stage-IV moraine. We suggest that the stage-I glaciation occurred during the cool and wet Marine Isotopic Stage 3/4 (MIS-3/4), stage-II glaciations began with the onset of MIS-2, whereas the stage-III and IV glaciations occurred during the mid-to late Holocene (MIS-1). We speculate that the first sharp crested unconsolidated moraines around 3600 masl correspond to the later phase of the Little Ice Age (LIA). Historical data suggests that the remaining three ridges represent Pindari glacier snout positions at 1906, 1958 and 1965. We argue that the late Quaternary glaciations in the Pindar valley were modulated by changing insolation and summer monsoon intensity including the LIA, whereas the 20th century recessional trends can be attributed to post-LIA warming.

33 páginas, 9 figuras.- Versión pre-print, [EN] The Aragón Valley glacier (Central Western Pyrenees) has been studied since the late nineteenth century and has become one of the best areas in the Pyrenees to study the occurrence of Pleistocene glaciations and the relationships between moraines and fluvial terraces. New morphological studies and absolute ages for moraines and fluvial terraces in the Aragón Valley allow a correlation with other Pyrenean glaciers and provide solid chronologies about the asynchroneity between global last glacial maximum (LGM) and the maximum ice extent (MIE). Six frontal arcs and three lateral morainic ridges were identified in the Villanúa basin terminal glacial complex. The main moraines (M1 and M2) correspond to two glacial stages (oxygen isotopic stages MIS 6 and MIS 4), dated at 171±22ka and 68±7ka, respectively. From a topographical point of view, moraine M1 appears to be linked to the 60m fluvioglacial terrace, dated in a tributary of the Aragón River at 263±21ka. The difference in age between M1 moraine and the 60m fluvioglacial terrace suggests that the latter belongs to an earlier glacial stage (MIS 8). Moraine M2 was clearly linked to the fluvioglacial 20m terrace. Other minor internal moraines were related to the 7-8m terrace. The maximum glacial extent in the Central Pyrenees during the Last Glaciation is known to have occurred before the global Last Glacial Maximum, but the succession of cold events afterwards and their impact on the landscape are still relatively unknown. This study focuses on the environmental evolution in the upper valley of the Garonne River since the Last Glaciation. Geomorphological mapping allows analysis of the spatial distribution of inherited and current processes and landforms in the study area. The distribution of glacial records (moraines, till, erratic boulders, glacial thresholds) suggests the existence of four glacial stages, from the maximum expansion to the end of the glaciation. GIS modeling allows quantification of the Equilibrium Line Altitude, extent, thickness and volume of ice in each glacial stage. During the first stage, the Garonne glacier reached 460 m in the Loures-Barousse-Barbazan basin, where it formed a piedmont glacier 88 km from the head and extended over 960 km 2 . At a second stage of glacier stabilization during the deglaciation process, the valley glaciers were 12–23 km from the head until elevations of 1000–1850 m, covering an area of 157 km 2 . Glaciers during stage three remained isolated in the upper parts of the valley, at heights of 2050–2200 m and 2.6–4.5 km from the head, with a glacial surface of 16 km 2 . In stage four, cirque glaciers were formed between 2260 m and 2590 m, with a length of 0.4–2 km and a glacial area of 5.7 km 2 . Also, the wide range of periglacial, slope, nival and alluvial landforms existing in the formerly glaciated environments allows reconstruction of the post-glacial environmental dynamics in the upper Garonne basin. Today, the highest lands are organized following three elevation belts: subnival (1500–1900 m), nival (1900–2300 m) and periglacial/cryonival (2300–2800 m).

Cosmic-ray exposure (CRE) dating of moraines allow glacier fluctuations and past climate change reconstructions. In the French Alps, there is a lack of moraine dating for the Late Glacial/Holocene transition period. Here we present a chronology of glacier advances in the Upper Romanche valley (French Alps – Massif des Ecrins) based on 10 Be CRE dating. CRE ages of moraines of 13.0 ± 1.1 ka and 12.4 ± 1.5 ka provide evidence for two stages of glacial advance or standstill at the end of the Late Glacial. The CRE dating of a rock avalanche deposit at 12.2 ± 1.5 ka is attributed to post-glacial debuttressing and reveals rapid deglaciation at the end of the Late Glacial. A CRE age of 7.1 ± 0.7 ka of a second mass-wasting, whose triggering factor is unidentified so far, indicates that up to an altitude of 2300 m a.s.l., the valley was ice-free as of ∼7 kyr at the latest. The re-evaluation of 21 moraine 10 Be CRE ages from nine glacial valleys across the Alps shows multiple glacial advances occurring at the Late Glacial/Holocene transition. These results lead to a re-evaluation of the importance of cooling events during the Allerod and the Younger Dryas in the Alps.

The paper presents a glacial geomorphological map of landforms produced by different glaciers in East liddar during the past. The map has been created as the necessary precursor for an improved understanding of the glacial history of the region, and to strengthen a program of dating glacial limits in the region. The map was produced using Landsat TM, ASTER DEM, Google Earth™ imagery and field validation. The different landforms which were mapped include: lateral moraines, terminal moraines, proglacial lakes, palaeo-cirques, erratic boulders, outwash plains, whale backs, glacial grooves, rochee mountanee, drumlins, glacial striations, hanging valleys debris/talus cones, subglacial material. Glacial-Geomorphological features are very significant for palaeo-climatic reconstruction, showing variations, temporally and spatially. At the same time these landforms, which are also altered by processes prevailing during interglacial period, helps in geo-environment studies.

The Western Massif of the Picos de Europa (latitude 43° N, longitude 4–5° W) includes some of the highest peaks in the Cantabrian Mountains. This massif was heavily glaciated during the Last Glaciation, though the post-glacial environmental evolution is still poorly understood. Using a complementary geomorphological and sedimentological approach, we have reconstructed the environmental events occurred in this massif since the last Pleistocene glaciation. The geomorphological distribution of glacial landforms suggests the occurrence of four main glacial stages: maximum glacial advance, glacial expansion after the maximum advance, Late Glacial and Little Ice Age. Moreover, a 5.4-m long sedimentary sequence was retrieved from the karstic depression of Belbín providing a continuous record of the paleoenvironmental conditions in this area since the Last Glaciation until nowadays. This section suggests that the maximum glacial expansion occurred at a minimum age of 37.2 ka cal BP, significantly prior to the global Last Glacial Maximum. Subsequently, periglacial processes prevailed in the mid lands of the massif until glaciers expanded between 22.5 and 18.7 ka cal BP. Following the melting of the glaciers, a shallow lake appeared in the Belbín depression. Lake sediments do not show evidence of a cold stage during the Late Glacial, when moraine systems formed at higher locations. The terrestrification of this lake started at 8 ka cal BP and the area turned into grassland. At 4.9 ka cal BP the existence of charcoal particles in the sediments of Belbín sequence reveals the onset of human occupation in the massif through the use of fire activity for grazing purposes. Finally, the presence of moraines inside the highest northern cirques shows evidence of the last glacial phase that occurred during the Little Ice Age cold event. Traditionally regarded as a relict permafrost and periglacial landscape that lay beyond the limits of Pleistocene glaciation, the granite uplands of northern Dartmoor in south-west England in fact contain geomorphological evidence for the former existence of a plateau ice cap, making the area the location of the southernmost independent glacier mass in the British Isles. In addition to weakly U-shaped valleys, the most prominent evidence comprises arcuate and linear bouldery ridges and hummocky valley floor drift, which are interpreted as latero-frontal moraines deposited by the outlet glacier lobes of a plateau ice cap. Inset sequences of these depositional landforms, in association with meltwater channels, demarcate the receding margins of the glacier lobes. A numerical model of ice cap development shows that a predominantly thin plateau icefield type glaciation is required in order to produce significant ice flow into surrounding valleys. The highest and most extensive plateau areas were occupied by ice for the longest cumulative period of time throughout the Pleistocene, thereby explaining: (1) the lack of tors in such areas as the product of ‘average’ glacial conditions preferentially removing tors or dampening their production rates, (2) the survival of high relief tors during glaciation if they occupied summits too narrow to develop thick and erosive glacier ice, and (3) the survival of subdued tors in areas glaciated less regularly during the Pleistocene.

During various periods of Late Quaternary glaciation, small ice-sheets, -caps, -fields and valley glaciers, occupied the mountains and uplands of Far NE Russia (including the Verkhoyansk, Suntar-Khayata, and Chersky Mountains; the Kolyma-Anyuy and Koryak Highlands; and much of the Kamchatka and Chukchi Peninsulas). Here, the margins of former glaciers across this region are constrained through the comprehensive mapping of moraines from remote sensing data (Landsat 7 ETM+ satellite images; ASTER Global Digital Elevation Model (GDEM2); and Viewfinder Panorama DEM data). A total of 8414 moraines are mapped, and this record is integrated with a series of published age-estimates (n = 25), considered to chronologically-constrain former ice-margin positions. Geomorphological and chronological data are compiled in a Geographic Information System (GIS) to produce 'best estimate' reconstructions of ice extent during the global Last Glacial Maximum (gLGM) and, to a lesser degree, during earlier phases of glaciation. The data reveal that much of Far NE Russia (∼1,092,427 km 2 ) preserves a glaciated landscape (i.e. is bounded by moraines), but there is no evidence of former ice masses having extended more than 270 km beyond mountain centres (suggesting that, during the Late Quaternary, the region has not been occupied by extensive ice sheets). During the gLGM, specifically, glaciers occupied ∼253,000 km 2 , and rarely extended more than 50 km in length. During earlier (pre-gLGM) periods, glaciers were more extensive, though the timing of former glaciation, and the maximum Quaternary extent, appears to have been asynchronous across the region, and out-of-phase with ice-extent maxima elsewhere in the Northern Hemisphere. This glacial history is partly explained through consideration of climatic-forcing (particularly moisture-availability, solar insolation and albedo), though topographic-controls upon the former extent and dynamics of glaciers are also considered, as are topographic-controls upon moraine deposition and preservation. Ultimately, our ability to understand the glacial and climatic history of this region is restricted when the geomorphological-record alone is considered, particularly as directly-dated glacial deposits are few, and topographic and climatic controls upon the moraine record are difficult to distinguish. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

Mountain glaciers are highly sensitive to temperature and precipitation fluctuations and, thus, the deposits of glacier growth and retreat constrain climatic variables. The Dangzi valley, located on the northern slope of Queer Shan Mountain, eastern Tibetan Plateau, is influenced by Indian monsoon and has preserved four integrated sets of moraines and associated glacial sediments. Numerical ages are scarce in this area, even though the moraines have been investigated for decades. In this study, dating of the glacial tills and glaciofluvial deposits was undertaken using quartz optically stimulated luminescence (OSL). We conclude that: (1) OSL ages show good agreement with geomorphological features. The samples should have been well-bleached before deposition, otherwise it is rather impossibly that all the ages in the former three sets are overestimated to a similar degree due to poor beaching as the spatial and temporal dynamics vary within glaciated valley. Mountain glaciers are highly sensitive to temperature and precipitation fluctuations and, thus, the deposits of glacier growth and retreat constrain climatic variables. The Dangzi valley, located on the northern slope of Queer Shan Mountain, eastern Tibetan Plateau, is influenced by Indian monsoon and has preserved four integrated sets of moraines and associated glacial sediments. Numerical ages are scarce in this area, even though the moraines have been investigated for decades. In this study, dating of the glacial tills and glaciofluvial deposits was undertaken using quartz optically stimulated luminescence (OSL). The Quaternary glacial history of Tashkurgan valley, in the transition between the Pamir and Karakoram, in Xinjiang Province, China was examined using remote sensing, field mapping, geomorphic analysis of landforms and sediments, and 10Be terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide dating. Moraines were assigned to four glacial stages: 1) the Dabudaer glacial stage that dates to the penultimate glacial cycle and/or earlier, and may represent one or more glaciations; 2) the Tashkurgan glacial stage that dates to early last glacial, most likely Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage (MIS) 4; 3) the Hangdi glacial stage that dates to MIS 2, possibly early MIS 2; and 4) the Kuzigun glacial stage that dates to the MIS 2, possibly the global Last Glacial Maximum, and is younger than the Hangdi glacial stage. Younger moraines and rock glaciers are present at the heads of tributary valleys; but these were inaccessible because they are located close to politically sensitive borders with Pakistan, Afghanistan and Tajikistan. Glaciers during the Dabudaer glacial stage advanced into the central part of the Tashkurgan valley. During the Tashkurgan glacial stages, glaciers advanced several kilometers beyond the mouths of the tributary valleys into the Tashkurgan valley. Glaciers during the Hangdi and Kuzigun glacial stages advanced just beyond the mouths of the tributary valleys. Glaciation in this part of the Himalayan–Tibetan orogen is likely strongly controlled by northern hemisphere climate oscillations, although a monsoonal influence on glaciation cannot be ruled out entirely.

Isolated NE-SW stretching the Helan Mountain massif, separating the temperate grassland of the Ordos plateau from the Tenggeli Desert, is a key position of studying the glacier development in west China as well as the coupling conditions of climate change with tectonic uplift. The glacial landforms and deposits including cirques, peaks, knife-edge ridges, lateral moraines, and terminal moraines distribute above 2800 m a.s.l. in the middle part of the Helan Mountain. This distribution indicates that here was once glaciated during the late Quaternary. Morphology features show a clear sequence of landscape forming events took place throughout the Helan Mountain. Laboratory optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon dating (AMS 14C) results indicate a late history of glacial advance. Late Pleistocene glaciers in the middle part of the Helan Mountain advanced to near their positions at least four times, and the glacial sequences can be assigned as the middle stage of last glacial cycle (MIS3b, 43.2±4.0 ka), last glacial maximum (LGM, ∼18 ka), late glacial (12.0±1.1 ka) and neo-glacial (3.4±0.3 ka) respectively. Adopting equilibrium line altitude ∼2980 m of last glacial maximum and the modern theoretical snowline altitude ∼4724 m as the maximum amplitudes, and the standard marine isotope curve (MIS) as the glacial equilibrium line change since the Gonghe Movement (150 ka), the relationship between the mountain altitude and glacier development is discussed herein. Compared with other environmental indexes such as the loess-paleosol and ice core, conclusions are made that glacier advances in the Helan Mountain during the late Quaternary obviously depended on the coupled control of tectonic uplift of mountain with the climate condition. It is at last glaciation that the mountain reached the altitude above snowline and coupled with the glacial climate. The glacial advances occurred in the early and middle stages of last glacial cycle after the Gonghe Movement.

Observations of geomorphic and sedimentary processes occurring in modern glaciers allows interpretations of the genesis of older glacial deposits and landforms and has led glacial geomorphologists and geologists to place a greater emphasis on studies of glacial sedimentology. This research investigates the genesis of Little Ice Age (LIA) moraines present in Portage Glacier Valley, south-central Alaska using till fabric and grain size analysis. The present-day moraine morphology and sedimentology in Portage Glacier Valley reveals the presence of two types of till and moraines. The clast-rich medium to coarse sandy diamicton present in the AD 1852 moraine is interpreted to be a lodgment till indicating that this feature is primarily a Type A push moraine representing glacial advance of Portage Glacier prior to AD 1852. We document the post–Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) deglaciation history of a small catchment in Colorado's Front Range and model the glacial history responsible. We combine cosmogenic exposure dating of moraine boulders and glacial polish from 10 sites down the valley axis with a set of 1-D and 2-D numerical glacier models in which climate is represented by prescribed winter and summer mass balance profiles. Moraine ages of 24–18 ka constrain the LGM maximum glacial extent at 15 km downvalley from the range crest. Glacial polish sites decline in age along the center portion of the valley, dropping to roughly 12 ka by 5 km from the crest. This supports a monotonic but non-steady decline in glacier length. Modeling of the deglaciation history reveals that the equilibrium line altitude (ELA) rise from ∼18 ka to ∼14 ka was between 250 and 350 m, and that from ∼14 ka to ∼12 ka was between 100 and 150 m. The glacial modeling has created two well individualized geomorphologic landscapes in the Transylvanian Alpes: Borascu, characterized by the large extension of the platform and high peaks, and Fagaras, where cirques were multiplied and have developed until they reduced the platform to a very sharp ridge (gipfelflur). The layout of the main ridge on the West-East direction and the overall morphography of the two slopes, the northern one short and steep and the southern long, with gentle slopes, were also reflected in the way of development of glaciers in the Quaternary. In the Vâlsan basin there are distinguished some particularities of the glacial landform. Thus, the glacial landform of this sector of the Fagaras Mountains is characterized by a small steep (200-300m) which favored the development of a long glacial valley with gentle slopes and led to the forming of the moraines at the glacial valley floor. The Vâlsan glacial cirque is at 2300m altitude, is small and has small lakes. The bottom of the cirque is flat and is predominantly grafted on mica-schist and gneisses. The Vâlsan glacial valley is North-South oriented and has several glacial thresholds. The slopes surrounding the Vâslan valley are symmetrical, being affected by torrents and avalanches. Other characteristic landforms are: narrow glacial crests, glacial replats ridges, nunataks and moraines. The frost wedging caused the residual relief represented by sharp ridges, peaks, landforms of accumulation, debris cones, glacis, stone arches, protalus ramparts. Overall, the Vâlsan glacial valley is a typical valley where the intensive post-glacial processes have hidden most of the features resulting from the glaciers action, which kept the characteristic „U” shape and the glacial replats appear from place to place under glacises and rock debris.

To help delineate the transition in pattern and timing of glaciation between two contrasting regions, Lahul to the south and Ladakh to the north, moraines in the Puga and Karzok valleys of Sanskrit in the Transhimalaya of northern India were mapped and dated using cosmogenic 10 Be. In Lahul, Late Quaternary glaciation was extensive with total valley glacial systems being >100 km in extent, whereas glaciation in Ladakh has been comparatively restricted, with glaciers advancing only ∼15 km from the contemporary glaciers during the last 200 ka. In the Puga valley, glaciers advanced >15 km at ∼129 ka and ∼10 km at ∼46 ka, ∼4.2 ka, and ∼0.6 ka. In the Karzok valley, glaciers advanced ∼1 km at ∼3.6 ka. Boulder exposure ages from a large moraine complex in Karzok indicate a glacial advance at ∼80 ka of ∼4 km from the present ice margin. The oldest moraine in Karzok is ∼311 ka, indicating that glaciers advanced >10 km from the present ice margin during or before marine isotope stage 9. The glacial chronology of the two valleys shows a lack of early Holocene glaciation and generally asynchronous glaciation between them. Moraines in the Puga and Karzok valleys broadly correlate with previous studies in the Zanskar Range but the paucity of data for many of the glacial stages across the Zanskar region makes the correlations tentative. The lack of early Holocene glaciation in the Puga and Karzok valleys is in stark contrast to many regions of the Himalaya, including Lahul, and the restricted glacial extent in Zanskar is more similar to the style of glaciation in Ladakh. The similarity between the glacial records in the Puga and Karzok study areas suggests that the transition to Lahul style glaciation is to the south of the Karzok valley, showing that this geographical transition is abrupt.

Kongur Mountain is the largest center of modern glaciation on the Pamir Plateau. During the glacial-interglacial cycles of the Quaternary, Kongur Mountain was extensively and repeatedly glaciated, and the glacial landforms from multiple glaciations are well-preserved in valleys, in basins, and on the piedmonts. Dating samples have been collected according to the distribution and weathering of the glacial tills, the relationship among the glacial deposits, and the loess or soil developed on the moraines. Electron spin resonance (ESR) dating of the samples was done using the germanium (Ge) centers in the glacial quartz grains, which are sensitive to both sunlight and grinding. The ages of the glacial deposits can be divided into four clusters, i.e., 13.1±0.8–27.0±2.2, 36.4±3.3–48.7±5.7, 65.6±6.8–86.6±8.9, and 105.6±9.4–178.3±17.8 ka. Six glacial advances in this region have been confirmed, which are equivalent in age to the Little Ice Age (LIA), Neoglaciation, marine oxygen isotope stages (MIS) 2, mid-MIS3, MIS4, and MIS6. The largest local last glacial maximum (LGML) occurred during MIS4 rather than the global Last Glacial Maximum (LGMG) of MIS2, and a glacial advance that occurred during mid-MIS3 was also larger than the LGMG. Furthermore, deeply weathered tills below 3500 m a.s.l. on the western slope of Kongur Mountain, when compared with the ages of the oldest glaciation of the Muztag Ata region, likely occurred prior to the penultimate glacial cycle. The glacial landforms prior to the penultimate glacial cycle on the northern slope are not well-preserved due to erosion after deposition. Several glacial deposits are only speculated to be distributed at higher elevations on the southwest side of the Gaizi Checkpoint. The extensive hummocky moraines on the western slope were formed by multiple glacial advances, and the latest glacial advance corresponded to mid-MIS3.

Like for most parts of High Asia, researches concerning the Pleistocene landscape evolution of the Leh Basin (34°03′ N/77°38′ E) have also left contradictions. To push this topic, three up to now unexplored Ladakh Range tributaries of the Leh Basin (Stagmo-, Arzu- and Nang-Valley) have been investigated. U-shaped profiles, transfluence passes, moraine mantled and glacially rounded peaks and ridges, roches moutonnees, glacial flank polishings and ground moraines document the former glaciation of the study area. The ice fillings of these tributaries reached a minimum thickness up to 540 m. Even at the valley outlets and on the orographic right side of the Leh Basin, the glaciation was more than 350 m thick. Based on these empirically extracted results, theoretical snow line considerations lead to the conclusion that the whole Leh Basin was filled up by a former Indus-Valley glacier. An ice injection limited to the nourishment areas of the Ladakh Range valleys could not have caused the reconstructed ice cover (down to 3236 m a.s.l.), which is proved by extended ground moraine complexes. Only an Indus ice stream network (most likely during the LGP), nourished by inflowing glaciers of the Ladakh- and Stok Range, explains the widespread existence of the glacial sediments at the outlets of the investigated valleys.

New Zealand glaciers reached their last glacial maximum position at or before ~ 25 ka, and, as early as 23 ka, commenced a slow and continual retreat. New cosmogenic exposure ages and field mapping from the Rakaia Valley in the South Island suggest that extensive ice survived well into the latter half of the Last Glacial–Interglacial Transition (18–11 ka), with the post-15 ka period inferred to have near Holocene climate conditions based on ecological proxy data. By as late as ~ 15.5 ka, glacier termini had retreated as little as 5–10 km from glacial maximum positions. Numerous minor ice still-stand positions and oscillations are recognized, but the record specifically excludes evidence for either a major climatic amelioration at ~ 15–16 ka or a significant glacial re-advance during the Antarctic Cold Reversal (ACR) or the Younger Dryas (YD). We conclude that the currently widespread interpretation of an episodic New Zealand glacial record since the LGM is an artifact of valley-dependent retreat processes. Pro-glacial lake formation and local site conditions combined to give an apparent, but misleading, picture of glacial retreat punctuated by major, climatically driven, re-advances. The Quaternary glaciation of Gurla Mandhata (Naimona’nyi), an impressive, isolated dome-shaped massif situated in a remote region of southern Tibet, was examined using glacial geomorphic methods and dated using 10 Be terrestrial cosmogenic nuclides. The oldest moraines, representing an expanded ice cap that stretched ∼ 5 km into the foreland of the Gurla Mandhata massif, likely formed during marine isotope stage (MIS) 10 or an earlier glacial cycle. Another glacial expansion of coalescing piedmont type occurred during the early part of the last glacial cycle or the penultimate glacial cycle, after which glaciers became restricted to entrenched valley types. Impressive latero-frontal moraines at the mouths of most valleys date to the early part of the last glacial cycle and MIS 3. A succession of six sets of moraines within the valleys and up to the contemporary glaciers show that glaciers advanced during the Lateglacial, Early Holocene, Neoglacial and possibly Little Ice Age. The change of style of glaciation throughout the latter part of the Quaternary, from expanded ice caps to deeply entrenched valley glaciers, might reflect: (1) climatic controls with reduced moisture supply to the region over time; and/or (2) tectonic controls reflecting increase basin subsidence due to detachment faulting and enhanced valley incision.

Three glacial stages (Deshkit 1, Deshkit 2 and Dishkit 3 glacial stages) are identified in the Nubra and Shyok valleys in northernmost Ladakh, northwest India, on the basis of geomorphic field mapping, remote sensing, and 10Be terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide surface exposure dating. The glacial stages date to ∼ 45 ka (Deshkit 1 glacial stage), ∼ 81 ka (Deshkit 2 glacial stage) and ∼ 144 ka (Deshkit 3 glacial stage). A mean equilibrium line altitude depression of ∼ 290 m for the Deshkit 1 glacial stage was calculated using the area accumulation ratio, toe-to-headwall ratio, area–altitude, and area–altitude balance ratio methods. Comparison of glaciation in the Nubra and Shyok valleys with glaciations in the adjacent Central Karakoram of northern Pakistan and northern side of the Ladakh Range of northern India indicates that glaciation was synchronous on Milankovitch timescales across the region during MIS-6, but differed greatly in extent, with more extensive glaciation in the Karakoram than the morphostratigraphically equivalent glaciation on the northern slopes of the Ladakh Range. This highlights the strong contrast in the extent of glaciation across ranges in the Himalaya–Tibetan orogen, necessitating caution when correlating glacial successions within and between mountain ranges.

The Muzart River originates on the southeastern slope of Tumur Peak, the largest center of modern glaciation in the Tianshan Range. Glacial landforms and sediments indicate that there are four major Quaternary glaciations in this drainage. The glacial landforms contain considerable information about the changes of the ancient glaciers. Dating the landforms allows the temporal and spatial variations of the ancient glaciers in this valley to be understood and provides essential information in reconstructing the paleoenvironment in this region. Electron spin resonance (ESR) dating of a well-exposed section, the multiple end moraines of the Pochengzi glaciation (the third set of moraines), and the local outwash and fluvial sediments on the Kezibulake glacial plain (the fourth set of moraines) was carried out using germanium (Ge) centers in the glacial quartz grains, which are sensitive to both sunlight and grinding. Eleven depositional ages have been determined. Based on the dating results, the principle of superposition and the glaciations pattern reported in the adjacent valley, the Pochengzi end moraines were determined to be deposited during the major glacial intervals that are equivalent in age to marine oxygen isotope stages (MIS) 2, mid-MIS 3 and MIS 4 and the Kezibulake glacial deposits were determined to be equivalent in age to MIS 6. Furthermore, the Tugaibieliqi end moraine (the second set of moraines) was deposited during the Neoglaciation (a cold period between 3 and 4 ka) and the 3–4 end moraines located at the terminuses of the modern glacier were deposited during the Little Ice Age. The ages of the Pochengzi glacial deposits can be subdivided into three clusters, they are 13.6–25.3 ka, 39.5–40.4 ka and 64.2–71.7 ka, respectively. The largest local last glacial maximum (LGM L ) occurred during MIS 4 rather than the global Last Glacial Maximum (LGM G ) of MIS 2. Furthermore, a glacier that is slightly larger than that of MIS 2 developed in this drainage during mid-MIS 3. The ancient Muzart glaciers were compound valley glaciers during the Neoglaciation, MIS 2 and mid-MIS 3, and piedmont glaciers during MIS 4 and MIS 6.

Southeastern Tibet is the type area for monsoonal maritime glaciers in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau with more than 4000 mountain glaciers covering an area of approximately 8000 km 2 . Based on moraines in the Boduizangbo River Valley, glacial advances have been recognized for the Guxiang, Baiyu, and Yuren Glaciations. Cosmogenic radionuclide surface exposure, ESR, and radiocarbon dating methods are used to estimate moraine ages. The dates suggest that glacial advances occurred during MIS-6, MIS-2 and MIS-1. Moraines of possible MIS-4 or MIS-3 age are also present, but have not yet been dated. During the Guxiang Glaciation, glaciers converged in the Boduizangbo Valley and formed a glacier approximately 100 km long, reaching the Parlongzangbo River Valley. During the Baiyu Glaciation the glacier was about 80 km long, yet did not reach the main valley of the Parlongzangbo River. During the Yuren Glaciation, glaciers advanced only within tributary valleys feeding the Boduizangbo River. Based on glacier extent, reconstructed equilibrium line altitudes during the Guxiang and Baiyu Glaciations were approximately 800 m and 600 m lower, respectively than at present. Valley glaciers have been well studied in the northwestern Venezuelan Andes over the last 20-year period with most sourcing reconstructions limited to the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and confined to the mapping of moraine positions and the detailed analysis of pedostratigraphic sequences reaching back into the Middle Wisconsinan (Weichselian) Glaciation. Using bedding macrofeatures, fabric analysis (magnetic azimuths) with mirror images, clast inclination and microtextural evidence determined with the FE-SEM (Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy) and EDS (Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy), and micromorphology of the PED5 composite section of Early to Late Merida age was analyzed to reconstruct the till succession and glacial dynamics.
