A theoretical investigation of positron scattering from phosphorus-containing compounds (viz., PH 3 , P 2 H 4 , PCl 3 , PF 3 , PBr 3 , POF 3 , POCl 3 , and H 2 PO 4) is reported in this article. The quantum mechanical potential scattering approach is utilized to calculate integral elastic, excitation, momentum transfer, direct ionization, positronium formation, total ionization, inelastic, differential, and total cross sections on a fine energy grid from 1 to 5000 eV. The ionization contribution in the inelastic scattering is estimated using the complex scattering potential-ionization contribution technique. Prior research on positron collisions with these targets is scarce; as a result, the purpose of this study is to make up, at least in part, for this deficiency in cross-section data. In addition to being pertinent to positron transport analyses, such as Monte Carlo methods, the current results should be useful to benchmark the accuracy and validity of positron molecule collision computations and, more significantly, to compare these calculations with related electron scattering outcomes. Furthermore, the calculated cross sections of PH 3 are compared with NH 3 and other phosphorus-containing compounds. The analysis makes it abundantly evident that the atoms on the periphery of a molecule have a substantially larger impact on the scattering process than the central atom. To analyze the scattering dynamics of positrons and their anti-particle electrons, a comparative study of cross sections of H 2 PO 4 and H 2 SO 4 is also presented. This article reports the first measurements of high-energy photons produced with the high-intensity PETawatt Aquitaine Laser (PETAL) laser. The experiments were performed during the commissioning of the laser. The laser had an energy of about 400 J, an intensity of 8 × 1018 W cm−2, and a pulse duration of 660 fs (FWHM). It was shot at a 2 mm-thick solid tungsten target. The high-energy photons were produced mainly from the bremsstrahlung process for relativistic electrons accelerated inside a plasma generated on the front side of the target. This paper reports measurements of electrons, protons and photons. Hot electrons up to ≈35 MeV with a few-MeV temperature were recorded by a spectrometer, called SESAME (Spectre ÉlectronS Angulaire Moyenne Énergie). K- and L-shells were clearly detected by a photon spectrometer called SPECTIX (Spectromètre Petal à Cristal en TransmIssion pour le rayonnnement X). High-energy photons were diagnosed by CRACC-X (Cassette de RAdiographie Centre Chambre-rayonnement X), a bremsstrahlung cannon. Bremsstrahlung cannon analysis is strongly dependent on the hypothesis adopted for the spectral shape. Different shapes can exhibit similar reproductions of the experimental data. To eliminate dependence on the shape hypothesis and to facilitate analysis of the data, simulations of the interaction were performed. To model the mechanisms involved, a simulation chain including hydrodynamic, particle-in-cell, and Monte Carlo simulations was used. The simulations model the preplasma generated at the front of the target by the PETAL laser prepulse, the acceleration of electrons inside the plasma, the generation of MeV-range photons from these electrons, and the response of the detector impacted by the energetic photon beam. All this work enabled reproduction of the experimental data. The high-energy photons produced have a large emission angle and an exponential distribution shape. In addition to the analysis of the photon spectra, positron production was also investigated. Indeed, if high-energy photons are generated inside the solid target, some positron/electron pairs may be produced by the Bethe–Heitler process. Therefore, the positron production achievable within the PETAL laser facility was quantified. Relativistic electron-positron plasmas are ubiquitous in extreme astrophysical environments such as black-hole and neutron-star magnetospheres, where accretion-powered jets and pulsar winds are expected to be enriched with electron-positron pairs. Their role in the dynamics of such environments is in many cases believed to be fundamental, but their behavior differs significantly from typical electron-ion plasmas due to the matter-antimatter symmetry of the charged components. So far, our experimental inability to produce large yields of positrons in quasi-neutral beams has restricted the understanding of electron-positron pair plasmas to simple numerical and analytical studies, which are rather limited. We present the first experimental results confirming the generation of high-density, quasi-neutral, relativistic electron-positron pair beams using the 440 GeV/c beam at CERN's Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) accelerator. Monte Carlo simulations agree well with the experimental data and show that the characteristic scales necessary for collective plasma behavior, such as the Debye length and the collisionless skin depth, are exceeded by the measured size of the produced pair beams. Our work opens up the possibility of directly probing the microphysics of pair plasmas beyond quasi-linear evolution into regimes that are challenging to simulate or measure via astronomical observations. Background: The elemental concentration (especially oxygen and carbon) and mass density must be accurately assigned to perform Monte Carlo (MC) simulations for predicting proton‐induced nuclear reactions in the human body. We recently proposed an approach to quantify elemental concentrations and mass densities of human soft tissues from water content (WC) data obtained by quantitative magnetic resonance (MR) imaging (which we called "MRWC"). Purpose: This study presents the first implementation of MRWC‐derived elemental concentrations and mass densities as complementary inputs into MC simulations on a virtual head phantom, and demonstrates the simulation of positron emitter production yields in proton therapy. Methods: An MC code, PHITS, was used to simulate proton therapy with a monoenergetic 140 MeV beam for a digital head phantom provided by BrainWeb. Three different head images were synthesized as inputs: a conventional CT image, an ideal CT image as a reference, and a WC image coupled with the bone‐only CT image for a hybrid approach (MRWC/CT). Thereafter, the performance of the MRWC/CT method was evaluated by comparing its accuracy in predicting the production yields of positron emitters (11C and 15O) with the gold‐standard CT‐only method. Results: The MRWC/CT method could predict 11C and 15O production yield maps that closely resembled the corresponding reference maps, while the CT‐only method failed. The structural similarity index measures between the reference and CT‐ or MRWC/CT‐derived maps were improved from 0.67 (CT‐only) to 0.87 (MRWC/CT) for 11C and 0.76 (CT‐only) to 0.93 (MRWC/CT) for 15O. Furthermore, applying post‐processing normalizations to account for elemental density variations in the production yields of positron emitters facilitated the determination of distal fall‐off positions in depth activity profiles. Conclusion: At least in the head area, the MRWC/CT method demonstrated potential for more precise predictions of proton‐induced positron emitter distributions via MC simulations than that of the CT‐only method. Although the comparison of fully differential ionization data for particle and antiparticle impact provides the ultimate tests of theoretical models, only very low antiparticle beam intensities are available. Hence, few experiments of this type have been performed. Therefore, available experimentally obtained single and double differential cross-sections, which are much easier to obtain, are compared in order to demonstrate differences when only the projectile mass or charge (+1 or −1) is changed. Included in the comparison are cross-sections calculated for positron and electron impact using a three-particle classical trajectory Monte Carlo method. The calculated cross-sections provide independent information about the ejected electron and the scattered projectile contributions, plus information about the impact parameters, all as functions of the collision kinematics. Spin-polarized positron beams have widely been utilized in applications ranging from fundamental physical studies to material processing. Preparing highly polarized positron beams for accurate probing is a long-standing issue. Here, we put forward a method to produce ultra-relativistic polarized positrons with unprecedented purity in a femtosecond timescale employing a few-PW circularly polarized laser pulse. The fully spin-resolved QED Monte Carlo method is used for simulating the two successive QED processes during the interaction, i.e., nonlinear Compton scattering and nonlinear Breit–Wheeler pair production. As the photons emitted in a circularly polarized laser field are symmetrically polarized, the polarization of the intermediate gamma photon beam averages out to zero, which is advantageous for improving the polarization of positrons. Meanwhile, the moderate laser intensity suppresses the depolarization of the new-born positrons induced by radiation reaction effect. As a result, the polarization of the positrons can reach up to ≳ 90%, the highest among the laser-driven polarization schemes conceived hitherto. Furthermore, our method relaxes the requirement on laser intensity to few-PW level, offering a promising way of preparing polarized positrons with current-generation laser facilities. We present theoretical studies of electron and positron interaction with protons aligned in a one-dimension periodic line. The equally spaced protons were artificially generated where the individual protons are fixed in a certain position. The incident energies were 500 eV and 1000 eV. The electron and positron trajectories passing through these periodic multiple scattering objects were calculated using a classical trajectory Monte Carlo method. In this work, a theoretical differential analysis of the positron impact ionization of hydrogen embedded in weakly coupled plasmas at an impact energy of 80 eV is developed. While the total and singly differential cross sections are analyzed within the classical trajectory Monte Carlo method, a Born-3DW model for screened environments, recently introduced by the authors, is used to provide a fully differential view of the process. The present results suggest that the electron emission spectra are strongly affected by the level of screening of the surrounding medium, mainly due to the loss of the postcollisional interaction mechanism. Focusing on the electron and positron spectrum measured with the Calorimetric Electron Telescope (CALET), which shows characteristic structures, we calculate the flux contributions of cosmic rays that have escaped from randomly appearing supernova remnants. We adopt a Monte Carlo method to take into account the stochastic nature of the appearance of nearby sources. We find that without a complicated energy dependence of the diffusion coefficient, simple power-law diffusion coefficients can produce spectra similar to the CALET spectrum, even with a dispersion in the injection index. The positron component measured with AMS-02 is consistent with a bump-like structure around 300 GeV in the CALET spectrum. One to three nearby supernovae can contribute up to a few tens of percent of the CALET flux at 2â€"4 TeV, while ten or more unknown and distant (≳500 pc) supernovae account for the remaining several tens of percent of the flux. The CALET spectrum, showing a sharp drop at ∼1 TeV, allows for a contribution of cosmic rays from an extraordinary event that occurred ∼400 kyr ago. This type of event releases electrons/positrons with a total energy more than 10 times the average energy for usual supernovae, and its occurrence rate is lower than one three-hundredth of the usual supernova rate. Monte Carlo (MC) simulation can be used in teaching the physics of ionizing radiation with applications in medical physics. However, the free MC codes available are not user-friendly for new and inexperienced users, limiting their use as an educational tool. This study focuses on the development of a user-friendly graphical interface for MC simulations with a focus on learning the interaction of ionizing radiation applied to Medical Physics. The interface is an executable file developed in Python 3.9. The interface serves as a frontend for the simulations performed by the PENELOPE v. 2014 code with the penEasy v. 2015 extension. Two types of simulations are available: (i) Particle tracking and (ii) Dose deposition. The results obtained in case (i) are presented graphically as three figures that show the trajectory of electrons, photons and positrons, respectively. For case (ii), the result is the dose as a function of the depth of a box-shaped volume. In summary, this interface, with simple geometry and fast simulations, in an interactive environment, offers a wide range of possibilities for understanding the interaction of radiation with matter, which is the basis of medical physics. Single shot gamma-induced positron annihilation spectroscopy (GiPS) based on a laser wakefield accelerator is proposed. In this spectroscopy, a large number of gamma rays generated by laser-wakefield accelerated electrons are injected into a sample in a very short time (<2 ps), and the positron lifetime is detected by measuring the time profile of the annihilation radiation (511 keV gamma ray) from the sample. The processes including gamma-ray production, shielding, annihilation generation, and annihilation detection were simulated by using the Monte Carlo method. The results show that up to 1010 gamma rays with a duration of 1.4 ps can be produced per shot with a 45 TW laser system. A Cherenkov radiator PbF2 was used to detect the annihilation radiation, and its optimal thickness of 15 mm was obtained. A whole process simulation with optimized parameters was conducted. A low statistical fluctuation lifetime spectrum can be produced, which confirms the feasibility of single shot GiPS with a typical 45 TW laser system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Systematic studies of the so-called positron accumulation effect for samples with particles embedded in a matrix are reported. This effect is related to energetic positrons which penetrate inhomogeneous medium. Due to differences in the linear absorption coefficient, different amounts of positrons are accumulated and annihilate in the identical volume of both materials. Positron lifetime spectroscopy and Doppler broadening of the annihilation line using Na-22 positrons were applied to the studies of the epoxy resin samples with embedded micro-sized particles of transition metals, i.e., Ni, Sn, Mo, W, and nonmetal particles, i.e., Si and NaF. The significant difference between the determined fraction of positrons annihilating in the particles and the particle volume fraction indicates the positron accumulation effect. The simple phenomenological model and Monte Carlo simulations are able to describe the main features of the obtained dependencies. The aluminum alloy with embedded Sn nanoparticles is also considered for demonstration differences between the accumulation and another related effect, i.e., the positron affinity. • 10 μm thick tungsten foils maximize the yield of thermal positrons. • A tradeoff exists between total thermal positron yield and extraction efficiency. • Narrow moderator grids are more efficient at higher extraction potentials. • Reflection survival probability significantly affects extraction efficiency. Monte Carlo radiation transport simulations were used to calculate the slow positron yields from tungsten foil positron moderators at a reactor-based slow positron source. The slow positron generation rates were coupled to a simple electrostatic extraction model to estimate the yield of extractable slow positrons from the source. Despite improvements in small animal PET instruments, many tracers cannot be imaged at sufficiently high resolutions due to positron range, while multi-tracer PET is hampered by the fact that all annihilation photons have equal energies. Here we realize multi-isotope and sub-mm resolution PET of isotopes with several mm positron range by utilizing prompt gamma photons that are commonly neglected. A PET-SPECT-CT scanner (VECTor/CT, MILabs, The Netherlands) equipped with a high-energy cluster-pinhole collimator was used to image 124I and a mix of 124I and 18F in phantoms and mice. In addition to positrons (mean range 3.4 mm) 124I emits large amounts of 603 keV prompt gammas that—aided by excellent energy discrimination of NaI—were selected to reconstruct 124I images that are unaffected by positron range. Photons detected in the 511 keV window were used to reconstruct 18F images. Images were reconstructed iteratively using an energy dependent matrix for each isotope. Correction of 18F images for contamination with 124I annihilation photons was performed by Monte Carlo based range modelling and scaling of the 124I prompt gamma image before subtracting it from the 18F image. Additionally, prompt gamma imaging was tested for 89Zr that emits very high-energy prompts (909 keV). In Derenzo resolution phantoms 0.75 mm rods were clearly discernable for 124I, 89Zr and for simultaneously acquired 124I and 18F imaging. Image quantification in phantoms with reservoirs filled with both 124I and 18F showed excellent separation of isotopes and high quantitative accuracy. Mouse imaging showed uptake of 124I in tiny thyroid parts and simultaneously injected 18F-NaF in bone structures. The ability to obtain PET images at sub-mm resolution both for isotopes with several mm positron range and for multi-isotope PET adds to many other unique capabilities of VECTor's clustered pinhole imaging, including simultaneous sub-mm PET-SPECT and theranostic high energy SPECT. The next‐generation positron zirconium‐89 (89Zr, T1/2 = 3.27 days) is a novel nuclide for immunological positron emission tomography because of its favorite longer half‐life. The aim of this work is to develop optimized methods for routine production and purification of 89Zr through Monte Carlo (MC) simulation and laboratory experiments. 89Y(p,n)89Zr reaction was used for 89Zr production. Optimized thicknesses of Al degrader (0.11 cm) and 89Y foil (0.064 cm) were simulated through MC method. 89Zr (15.0–40.7 mCi) with an average production rate of 0.92 ± 0.12 mCi/μA·h was produced after 1‐ to 2‐h bombardment at the proton beam energy of 20 MeV and current of 20 μA. High radio‐purity 89Zr (6.14–26.8 mCi) obtained eluted from hydroxamate resin using 1‐mol/L oxalic acid solution, with the concentration of 2.7 × 104 mCi/L. The gamma spectrum showed that the characteristic peak of 89Zr was 511 and 909 keV, and no impurities were found. [89Zr]Zr‐DFO‐trastuzumab was successfully labeled and performed good radiochemical purity (>95%) and stability that showed potential application in tumor molecular imaging. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Featured Application: This work demonstrates that a trained deep neural network is able to accurately correct the blurring present in PET images when using radionuclides with large positron ranges, such as 68Ga. This approach can be used in any preclinical and clinical PET studies. Positron emission tomography (PET) is a molecular imaging technique that provides a 3D image of functional processes in the body in vivo. Some of the radionuclides proposed for PET imaging emit high-energy positrons, which travel some distance before they annihilate (positron range), creating significant blurring in the reconstructed images. Their large positron range compromises the achievable spatial resolution of the system, which is more significant when using high-resolution scanners designed for the imaging of small animals. In this work, we trained a deep neural network named Deep-PRC to correct PET images for positron range effects. Deep-PRC was trained with modeled cases using a realistic Monte Carlo simulation tool that considers the positron energy distribution and the materials and tissues it propagates into. Quantification of the reconstructed PET images corrected with Deep-PRC showed that it was able to restore the images by up to 95% without any significant noise increase. We present a conceptual design for a novel continuous wave electron-linac based high-intensity high-brightness slow-positron production source with a projected intensity on the order of 1010e+/s. Reaching this intensity in our design relies on the transport of positrons (T+ below 600 keV) from the electron-positron pair production converter target to a low-radiation and low-temperature area for moderation in a high-efficiency cryogenic rare gas moderator, solid Ne. This design progressed through Monte Carlo optimizations of: electron/positron beam energies and converter target thickness, transport of the e+ beam from the converter to the moderator, extraction of the e+ beam from the magnetic channel, a synchronized raster system, and moderator efficiency calculations. For the extraction of e+ from the magnetic channel, a magnetic field terminator plug prototype has been built and experimental results on the effectiveness of the prototype are presented. Purpose: Geant4 is a multi‐purpose Monte Carlo simulation tool for modeling particle transport in matter. It provides a wide range of settings, which the user may optimize for their specific application. This study investigates GATE/Geant4 parameter settings for proton pencil beam scanning therapy. Methods: GATE8.1/Geant4.10.3.p03 (matching the versions used in GATE‐RTion1.0) simulations were performed with a set of prebuilt Geant4 physics lists (QGSP_BIC, QGSP_BIC_EMY, QGSP_BIC_EMZ, QGSP_BIC_HP_EMZ), using 0.1mm‐10mm as production cuts on secondary particles (electrons, photons, positrons) and varying the maximum step size of protons (0.1mm, 1mm, none). The results of the simulations were compared to measurement data taken during clinical patient specific quality assurance at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust pencil beam scanning proton therapy facility. Additionally, the influence of simulation settings was quantified in a realistic patient anatomy based on computer tomography (CT) scans. Results: When comparing the different physics lists, only the results (ranges in water) obtained with QGSP_BIC (G4EMStandardPhysics_Option0) depend on the maximum step size. There is clinically negligible difference in the target region when using High Precision neutron models (HP) for dose calculations. The EMZ electromagnetic constructor provides a closer agreement (within 0.35 mm) to measured beam sizes in air, but yields up to 20% longer execution times compared to the EMY electromagnetic constructor (maximum beam size difference 0.79 mm). The impact of this on patient‐specific quality assurance simulations is clinically negligible, with a 97% average 2%/2 mm gamma pass rate for both physics lists. However, when considering the CT‐based patient model, dose deviations up to 2.4% are observed. Production cuts do not substantially influence dosimetric results in solid water, but lead to dose differences of up to 4.1% in the patient CT. Small (compared to voxel size) production cuts increase execution times by factors of 5 (solid water) and 2 (patient CT). Conclusions: Taking both efficiency and dose accuracy into account and considering voxel sizes with 2 mm linear size, the authors recommend the following Geant4 settings to simulate patient specific quality assurance measurements: No step limiter on proton tracks; production cuts of 1 mm for electrons, photons and positrons (in the phantom and range‐shifter) and 10 mm (world); best agreement to measurement data was found for QGSP_BIC_EMZ reference physics list at the cost of 20% increased execution times compared to QGSP_BIC_EMY. For simulations considering the patient CT model, the following settings are recommended: No step limiter on proton tracks; production cuts of 1 mm for electrons, photons and positrons (phantom/range‐shifter) and 10 mm (world) if the goal is to achieve sufficient dosimetric accuracy to ensure that a plan is clinically safe; or 0.1 mm (phantom/range‐shifter) and 1 mm (world) if higher dosimetric accuracy is needed (increasing execution times by a factor of 2); most accurate results expected for QGSP_BIC_EMZ reference physics list, at the cost of 10–20% increased execution times compared to QGSP_BIC_EMY. NEMA characterization of PET systems is generally based on 18F because it is the most relevant radioisotope for the clinical use of PET. 18F has a half-life of 109.7 min and decays into stable 18O via β+ emission with a probability of over 96% and a maximum positron energy of 0.633 MeV. Other commercially available PET radioisotopes, such as 82Rb and 68Ga have more complex decay schemes with a variety of prompt gammas, which can directly fall into the energy window and induce false coincidence detections by the PET scanner. Methods: Aim of this work was three-fold: (A) Develop a GATE model of the GE Signa PET/MR to perform realistic and relevant Monte Carlo simulations (B) Validate this model with published sensitivity and Noise Equivalent Count Rate (NECR) data for 18F and 68Ga (C) Use the validated GATE-model to predict the system performance for other PET isotopes including 11C, 15O, 13N, 82Rb, and 68Ga and to evaluate the effect of a 3T magnetic field on the positron range. Results: Simulated sensitivity and NECR tests performed with the GATE-model for different radioisotopes were in line with literature values. Simulated sensitivities for 18F and 68Ga were 21.2 and 19.0/kBq, respectively, for the center position and 21.1 and 19.0 cps/kBq, respectively, for the 10 cm off-center position compared to the corresponding measured values of 21.8 and 20.0 cps/kBq for the center position and 21.1 and 19.6 cps/kBq for the 10 cm off-center position. In terms of NECR, the simulated peak NECR was 216.8 kcps at 17.40 kBq/ml for 18F and 207.1 kcps at 20.10 kBq/ml for 68Ga compared to the measured peak NECR of 216.8 kcps at 18.60 kBq/ml and 205.6 kcps at 20.40 kBq/ml for18F and 68Ga, respectively. For 11C, 13N, and 15O, results confirmed a peak NECR similar to 18F with the effective activity concentration scaled by the inverse of the positron fraction. For 82Rb, and 68Ga, the peak NECR was lower than for 18F while the corresponding activity concentrations were higher. For the higher energy positron emitters, the positron range was confirmed to be tissue-dependent with a reduction of the positron range by a factor of 3 to 4 in the plane perpendicular to the magnetic field and an increased positron range along the direction of the magnetic field. Conclusion: Monte-Carlo simulations were used to predict sensitivity and NECR performance of GE Signa PET/MR for 18F, 15O, 13N, 11C, 82Rb, and 68Ga radioisotopes and were in line with literature data. Simulations confirmed that sensitivity and NECR were influenced by the particular decay scheme of each isotope. As expected, the positron range decreased in the direction perpendicular to the 3T magnetic field. Background: The limited bibliographic existence of research works on the use of Monte Carlo simulation to determine the energy spectra of electron beams compared to the information available regarding photon beams is a scientific task that should be resolved. Aims: In this work, Monte Carlo simulation was performed through the PENELOPE code of the Sinergy Elekta accelerator head to obtain the spectrum of a 6 MeV electron beam and its characteristic dosimetric parameters. Materials and Methods: The central-axis energy spectrum and the percentage depth dose curve of a 6 MeV electron beam of an Elekta Synergy linear accelerator were obtained by using Monte Carlo PENELOPE code v2014. For this, the linear accelerator head geometry, electron applicators, and water phantom were simplified. Subsequently, the interaction process between the electron beam and head components was simulated in a time of 86.4x104 s. Results: From this simulation, the energy spectrum at the linear accelerator exit window and the surface of the phantom was obtained, as well as the associated percentage depth dose curves. The validation of the Monte Carlo simulation was performed by comparing the simulated and the measured percentage depth dose curves via the gamma index criterion. Measured percentage depth- dose was determined by using a Markus electron ionization chamber, type T23343. Characteristic parameters of the beam related with the PDD curves such as the maximum dose depth (R100), 90% dose depth (R90), 90% dose depth or therapeutic range (R85), half dose depth (R50), practical range (Rp), maximum range (Rmax), surface dose (Ds), normalized dose gradient (G0) and photon contamination dose (Dx) were determined. Parameters related with the energy spectrum, namely, the most probable energy of electrons at the surface (Ep,0) and electron average energy (E- 0) were also determined. Conclusion: It was demonstrated that PENELOPE is an attractive and accurate tool for the obtaining of dosimetric parameters of a medical linear accelerator since it can reliably reproduce important clinical data such as the energy spectrum, depth dose, and dose profile. The beam energy of the circular electron–positron collider should be measured precisely to the order of 1 MeV, in order to decrease the uncertainty of the Higgs/W/Z bosons' mass measurement. For this purpose, a lepton bunch is extracted from the collider and collides with an Yttrium–Aluminum–Garnet laser pulse. After the inverse Compton scattering, the main beam and the scattered beam pass through an analytical magnetic field and are deflected to different angles. At the end of the drift beam pipes, the deflecting distances are detected with the spatial resolution of several microns. The systematic uncertainties caused by the detector arrangement, the magnetic field, the angle between the detector plane and the incident beam, and the synchrotron radiation are discussed in detail. The simulations of the statistical errors are given with a toy Monte Carlo sample. With some proper corrections, the beam energy uncertainty of the Higgs mode is around 2 MeV. Purpose: The increasing interest and availability of non-standard positron-emitting radionuclides has heightened the relevance of radionuclide choice in the development and optimization of new positron emission tomography (PET) imaging procedures, both in preclinical research and clinical practice. Differences in achievable resolution arising from positron range can largely influence application suitability of each radionuclide, especially in small-ring preclinical PET where system blurring factors due to annihilation photon acollinearity and detector geometry are less significant. Some resolution degradation can be mitigated with appropriate range corrections implemented during image reconstruction, the quality of which is contingent on an accurate characterization of positron range.Procedures: To address this need, we have characterized the positron range of several standard and non-standard PET radionuclides (As-72, F-18, Ga-68, Mn-52, Y-86, and Zr-89) through imaging of small-animal quality control phantoms on a benchmark preclinical PET scanner. Further, the Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS v3.02) code was utilized for Monte Carlo modeling of positron range-dependent blurring effects.Results: Positron range kernels for each radionuclide were derived from simulation of point sources in ICRP reference tissues. PET resolution and quantitative accuracy afforded by various radionuclides in practicable imaging scenarios were characterized using a convolution-based method based on positron annihilation distributions obtained from PHITS. Our imaging and simulation results demonstrate the degradation of small animal PET resolution, and quantitative accuracy correlates with increasing positron energy; however, for a specific "benchmark" preclinical PET scanner and reconstruction workflow, these differences were observed to be minimal given radionuclides with average positron energies below ~ 400 keV.Conclusion: Our measurements and simulations of the influence of positron range on PET resolution compare well with previous efforts documented in the literature and provide new data for several radionuclides in increasing clinical and preclinical use. In the slow positron beamline at the Kyoto University Research Reactor (KUR), positron creation was enhanced by increasing the gamma-ray intensity at the positron source via the reaction of 113Cd(n, γ)114Cd. To achieve this, a cadmium (Cd) cap was attached to the positron source, surrounding it, and thus, without intentional cooling, the temperature was able to reach near the melting point of Cd via nuclear heating. In this study, the degree to which the Cd cap contributes to the quantity of positron creation was estimated by using the Monte Carlo calculation code PHITS (Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System), which simulates radiation transportation and interaction with matter. As a result, the number of positrons created was found to become 2.0 ± 0.1 times higher by using the Cd cap at the KUR slow positron beamline. In this contribution, the system of the external plastic scintillator slabs of the AEgIS experiment is presented. These slabs, surrounding the superconducting magnet and operating at room temperature, are read out by photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) that are calibrated and equalised to be exploited as a whole detector with useful segmentation and redundancy to effectively detect single antiparticle annihilations. In particular, thanks to periodically recurring calibrations with cosmic rays and to a detailed study of the system in different operational conditions, including extensive Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, these scintillators can be used to identify antiproton annihilations over the constant background represented by cosmic rays and over the strongly time-dependent background due to positrons/positronium annihilations. By means of the sampling and digitization of the analog signal produced by each phototube and the consequent analysis of the amplitude of the recorded events, the energy released by the particle in the scintillator slab can be estimated consistently and with good accuracy. As a consequence, we are able to identify an amplitude range where positrons/positronium annihilations can be univocally excluded. We investigate the suitability of using a positron beam to obtain information about low-temperature plasmas. We have simulated the propagation of positrons using a stochastic particle-track Monte Carlo simulation in an argon plasma. Our study focuses on the bulk of the plasma, including all the interactions of a positron with the neutral and charged particles of varying electron temperature and ionisation fraction. We interpret our results in the context of experimentally observable quantities and identify several potential signatures of the plasma parameters. Electron acceleration has been optimized based on 3D particle-in-cell simulations of a short laser pulse interacting with low-density plasma targets to find the pulse propagation regime that maximizes the charge of high-energy electron bunches. This regime corresponds to laser pulse propagation in a self-trapping mode where the diffraction divergence is balanced by the relativistic nonlinearity such that relativistic self-focusing on the axis does not happen and the laser beam radius stays unchanged during pulse propagation in a plasma over many Rayleigh lengths. Such a regime occurs for a near-critical density if the pulse length considerably exceeds both the plasma wavelength and the pulse width. Electron acceleration occurs in a traveling cavity filled with a high-frequency laser field and a longitudinal electrostatic single-cycle field ("self-trapping regime"). Monte Carlo simulations demonstrated that a high electron yield allows an efficient production of gamma radiation, electron–positron pairs, neutrons, and even pions from a catcher-target. Purpose: To study the relationships between dose (D), kerma (K), and collision kerma (Kcol) in photon beams and to investigate total radiative yields for electrons and positrons as a function of energy. To do this accurately required calculating collision kerma directly as a function of position in a phantom and making changes to the EGSnrc package (including DOSRZnrc and g applications). Methods: Changes were made to the EGSnrc system to allow the user to distinguish events according to their initiating process, most importantly relaxation particles initiated by electron impact ionization as opposed to initiated by photons, especially those events depositing energy below energy cutoffs after relaxation events. Appropriate changes were made to the applications DOSRZnrc and g and a new application, DOSRZnrcKcol, was written. Results: The modified codes are much more robust against changes in simulation parameters such as ECUT and AE and whether or not electron impact ionization is included in the simulation. The radiative yields for electrons generally differ from values in ICRU Report 371 (1984) which only account for radiative losses due to bremsstrahlung. The Monte Carlo calculated g(brems) values are generally greater than the ICRU 37 values due to energy‐loss straggling. Plots of D, K and Kcol vs depth in megavoltage photon beams show that some "conventional wisdom" does not hold in general (e.g., D is not always greater than K past Dmax) and in general at 10 cm depth it is found that D≈K and D>Kcol. The beam radius at which D/Kcol reaches its saturation value depends strongly on the threshold used to define reaching saturation and is generally greater than the radius for lateral charged particle equilibrium used in the TRS‐483 Code of Practice for small beam dosimetry2 (Palmans et al, Med Phys. 2018;45:e1123–e1145). Conclusions: The changes to EGSnrc make kerma calculations more accurate but previous calculations with electron impact ionization turned off gave close to correct results. The application DOSRZnrcKcol makes calculating collision kerma more efficient and avoids various approximations used in the past although those approximations are shown to be justified. Including energy‐loss straggling when calculating bremsstrahlung radiation yield increases the value. Fluorescence losses and annihilation in flight further increase the radiation yield of electrons and positrons. Results demonstrate the effects of EGSnrc using electron bremsstrahlung production cross sections for positrons and failing to model positron impact ionization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The space-based GAMMA-400 gamma-ray telescope will measure the fluxes of gamma rays in the energy range from ∼20 MeV to several TeV and cosmic-ray electrons and positrons in the energy range from several GeV to several TeV to investigate the origin of gamma-ray sources, sources and propagation of the Galactic cosmic rays and signatures of dark matter. The instrument consists of an anticoincidence system, a converter-tracker (thickness one radiation length, 1 X0), a time-of-flight system, an imaging calorimeter (2 X0) with tracker, a top shower scintillator detector, an electromagnetic calorimeter from CsI(Tl) crystals (16 X0) with four lateral scintillation detectors and a bottom shower scintillator detector. In this paper, the capability of the GAMMA-400 gamma-ray telescope for electron and positron measurements is analyzed. The bulk of cosmic rays are protons, whereas the contribution of the leptonic component to the total flux is ∼10−3 at high energy. The special methods for Monte Carlo simulations are proposed to distinguish electrons and positrons from proton background in the GAMMA-400 gamma-ray telescope. The contribution to the proton rejection from each detector system of the instrument is studied separately. Quantum Monte Carlo methods are used to investigate the binding of a positron to the hydrogen cyanide (HCN) and lithium hydride (LiH) molecules. Our value of the adiabatic positron affinity (PA) of LiH of 1.010(3) eV is very close to the best theoretical value of 1.005 eV, obtained from variational calculations using explicitly correlated Gaussian basis sets [K. Strasburger, J. Chem. Phys. 114, 00615 (2001)]. We have obtained a reliable estimate of 0.0378(48) eV for the PA of the HCN molecule, which is almost 20 times larger than that obtained at the Hartree–Fock level, and strongly supports the binding of a positron in the electrostatic field of the HCN molecule. We discuss the physics of a photoluminescence-based pulse-energy detector that will be used to characterize hard x-ray free-electron-laser pulses at the Linac Coherent Light Source. We tested the detector in a quasi-steady-state mode of operation at the conventional synchrotron light source Stanford positron electron assymetric ring 3 at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory. We also developed a Monte-Carlo model for the x-ray interaction with the nitrogen gas and the resulting ultraviolet signal and found good agreement with the experimental data. We present the measurement of the intrinsic hadronic contamination at the CERN SPS H4 beamline configured to transport electrons and positrons at 100 GeV/c. The analysis, performed using data collected by the NA64- e experiment in 2022, is based on calorimetric measurements, exploiting the different interaction mechanisms of electrons and hadrons in the NA64 detector. We determined the contamination by comparing the results obtained using the nominal electron/positron beamline configuration with those from a dedicated setup, in which only hadrons impinged on the detector. We also obtained an estimate of the relative protons, anti-protons and pions yield by exploiting the different absorption probabilities of these particles in matter. We cross-checked our results with a dedicated Monte Carlo simulation for the hadron production at the primary T2 target, finding a good agreement with the experimental measurements. The ground states of the positronic complexes LiPs, NaPs, e[sup +]Be, e[sup +]Mg, and of the parent ordinary-matter systems have been simulated by means of the all-electron fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) method. Positron affinities and positronium binding energies are computed by direct difference between the DMC energy results. LiPs was recomputed in order to test the possibility of approximating the electron-positron Coulomb potential with a model one that does not diverge for r = 0, finding accurate agreement with previous DMC results. As to e[sup +] Be, the effect due to the near degeneracy of the 1 s²2s² and 1s²2p² configurations in Be is found to be relevant also for the positron affinity, and is discussed on the basis of the change in the ionization potential and the dipole polarizability. The DMC estimate of the positron affinity of Mg, a quantity still under debate, is 0.0168(14) hartree, in close agreement with the value 0.015 612 hartree computed by Mitroy and Ryzhihk [J. Phys. To manage the equivalent doses for radiation workers, exposure inhomogeneity is an important factor in the decision-making process related to protection measures and additional monitoring. Our previous study proposed the methodology to evaluate the inhomogeneity of exposure quantitatively. In this study, we applied proposed method to five different types of actual exposure situations encountered in the nuclear industry. Two of them were conventionally characterized as homogeneous exposure, and the other three were conventionally characterized as inhomogeneous exposure. The evaluation of homogeneity exposure was conducted using Monte Carlo calculations with two simplified models, which were then verified with phantom experiments. Consequently, all of the evaluations reproduced the experimental results, implying that our proposed method would be applicable for actual work conditions in the nuclear industry. Furthermore, the two presumed homogeneous exposure situations were found to be rather inhomogeneous because of the contribution of positrons and the limited source region. The results also show that the worker's posture has an impact on the inhomogeneity rather than the energy of incident radiation in nuclear works. The investigation also implies that obtaining the information on the most probable posture of the exposed worker, as well as the existence of the weekly penetrating radiation such as β± ray as a main source of exposure would be the key for more precise estimation. Laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA) is a plasma-based electron beam accelerator technology that can deliver electron beams with energies up to several GeVs, depending mainly on the power of the used laser system and the electron injection scheme. Here, we present the results from a GeV electron accelerator with a high reproducibility and a charge up to 30 pC using 110–120-TW laser pulses and by employing the well-established self-truncated ionization injection (STII) mechanism. These electron beams can be further used via bremsstrahlung in high-Z solid materials for the generation of gamma-rays and positron beams, therefore, composing a compact radiation source for various applications. Here, we use the Monte Carlo simulation code “Geant4” for studying the properties of those radiations. As expected, the characteristics of the generated gamma-rays and positron beams showed a strong dependence on the incident electron beam, target material, and thickness. The trend of positrons and gamma-rays energies and yield is shown for different high-Z to low-Z targets with the same areal mass density. Thicknesses of the target material in terms of its radiation length have been varied periodically in order to find the optimal thickness for obtaining the maximum energy and yield of the radiations. A trend can be seen in terms of energy spectra of the gamma-rays and positrons while increasing the thickness of the targets. The amount of radiation yields is also crucial to the choice of appropriate thickness of the target. In addition, this paper provides a brief description of the electrodynamics processes such as bremsstrahlung and electron–positron pair production initiated by LWFA electron beams. Positron and electron interaction collisions in living cells are efficiently simulated by Monte Carlo (MC) codes where huge data tables are needed. Present study provides detailed results of charged particles elastic interactions needed in MC on DNA nucleobases (adenine, thymine, cytosine and guanine, deoxyribose, and phosphoric acid). Indeed, electron and positron elastic cross sections, elastic mean free paths, and elastic angular distributions P(θ) are calculated from 10 eV to 100 keV using a corrected form of the independent atom method taking into account the geometry of the biomolecule. Our calculated results are compared with theoretical data available in the literature in absence of experimental data, in particular for positron. Moreover, our numerical results are presented in analytic format modeled to be used for fast sampling in the MC simulation of elastic collisions; particularly, we provide a useful analytic expression for sampling the elastic diffusion angle. For positron collisions on adenine, the relative error between numerical and analytic elastic diffusion angles is not exceeding 2% in the energy full range 10 eV to 100 keV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper reports the results of electron irradiations at various energies of the Samsung 8-Gb single-level cell nand flash memory. The percentage of bit errors from electron exposure is compared to results from 60Co total ionizing dose (TID) measurements. Electron irradiation at low energies (below 2 MeV) causes more bit upsets than 60Co gamma exposures at the same TID level when TID refers to equilibrium dose (as opposed to local dose). Bit upsets increase when electron energy decreases if comparisons are made at the same equilibrium dose level. In particular, 60-MeV electrons are less damaging than 60Co gamma exposures at the same equilibrium dose level while 1-MeV electrons are more damaging. However, all radiation sources produce virtually identical results when comparisons are made at the same local dose level, indicating that charged-particle equilibrium is violated during electron irradiations. Laser-generated positrons are evaluated as a probe source to radiograph in-flight ignition-relevant inertial confinement fusion capsules. Current ultraintense laser facilities are capable of producing 2×1012 relativistic positrons in a narrow energy bandwidth and short time duration. Monte Carlo simulations suggest that the unique characteristics of such positrons allow for the reconstruction of both capsule shell radius and areal density between 0.002 and 2 g/cm2. The energy-downshifted positron spectrum and angular scattering of the source particles are sufficient to constrain the conditions of the capsule between preshot and stagnation. We evaluate the effects of magnetic fields near the capsule surface using analytic estimates where it is shown that this diagnostic can tolerate line integrated field strengths of 100 T mm. Positrons, the anti-particle of electrons, are broadly used in medicine and materials science. Thus, understanding how free positrons interact with soft biological matter is important for medical diagnostic procedures as well as for safety. Most research in this regard focuses on positron transport in the context of image quality; however, scholars lack knowledge regarding radiation dose exposure. Too little attention has been paid to the full analysis of positron internal dosimetry. In this paper we examine the quality of positron transport using EGS5 Monte Carlo (MC) code, comparing it to GAMOS Monte Carlo code. To validate the suitability of EGS5 and GAMOS codes for positron dose evaluations, an experiment with a concentrate FDG syringe was performed. Dose rate was measured using a mobile MOSFET device and compared to MC simulation results obtained by EGS5 and GAMOS. In this study simulations of the transport of mono-energetic positron beams from 100 keV to 1.2 MeV were performed, in addition to two practical radionuclide isotopes through two different tissue layers: 5 mm and 0.07 mm thickness. The results of the simulations using ESG5 Monte Carlo code were compared to the GAMOS Monte Carlo code results. The simulations were performed to obtain detailed energy deposition from interactions of positrons and secondary electrons induced by positron sources along tissue layers. The EGS5 code dose results demonstrate good agreement with the MOSFET measured results. The GAMOS code results yielded a difference of more than twice the measured dose.
