Filamentary flows towards the centre of molecular clouds have been recognized as a crucial process in the formation and evolution of stellar clusters. In this paper, we present a comprehensive observational study that investigates the gas properties and kinematics of the Giant Molecular Cloud G148.24+00.41 using the observations of CO (1-0) isotopologues. We find that the cloud is massive (105 M⊙) and is one of the most massive clouds of the outer Galaxy. We identified six likely velocity coherent filaments in the cloud having length, width, and mass in the range of 14–38 pc, 2.5–4.2 pc, and (1.3–6.9) × 103 M⊙, respectively. We find that the filaments are converging towards the central area of the cloud, and the longitudinal accretion flows along the filaments are in the range of ∼ 26–264 M⊙ Myr−1. The cloud has fragmented into seven clumps having mass in the range of ∼ 260–2100 M⊙ and average size around ∼ 1.4 pc, out of which the most massive clump is located at the hub of the filamentary structures, near the geometric centre of the cloud. Three filaments are found to be directly connected to the massive clump and transferring matter at a rate of ∼ 675 M⊙ Myr−1. The clump hosts a near-infrared cluster. Our results show that large-scale filamentary accretion flows towards the central region of the collapsing cloud is an important mechanism for supplying the matter necessary to form the central high-mass clump and subsequent stellar cluster. The relative importance of magnetic fields, turbulence, and gravity in the early phases of star formation is still not well understood. We report the first high-resolution dust polarization observations at 850  |$\mu$| m around the most massive clump, located at the hub of the Giant Molecular Cloud G148.24+00.41, using SCUBA-2/POL-2 at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. We find that the degree of polarization decreases steadily towards the denser portion of the cloud. Comparing the intensity gradients and local gravity with the magnetic field orientations, we find that local gravity plays a dominant role in driving the gas collapse as the magnetic field orientations and gravity vectors seem to point towards the dense clumps. We also find evidence of U-shaped magnetic field morphology towards a small-scale elongated structure associated with the central clump, hinting at converging accretion flows towards the clump. Our observation has resolved the massive clump into multiple substructures. We study the magnetic field properties of two regions, central clump (CC) and northeastern elongated structure (NES). Using the modified Davis–Chandrasekhar–Fermi method, we determine that the magnetic field strengths of CC and NES are ∼24.0 ± 6.0  |$\mu$| G and 20.0 ± 5.0  |$\mu$| G, respectively. The mass-to-flux ratios are found to be magnetically transcritical/supercritical, while the Alfv |$\acute{\text{e}}$| n Mach number indicates a trans-Alfv |$\acute{\text{e}}$| nic state in both regions. These results, along with Virial analysis, suggest that at the hub of G148.24+00.41, gravitational energy has an edge over magnetic and kinetic energies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Clouds more massive than about 105 M⊙ are potential sites of massive cluster formation. Studying the properties of such clouds in the early stages of their evolution offers an opportunity to test various cluster formation processes. We make use of CO, Herschel , and UKIDSS observations to study one such cloud, G148.24+00.41. Our results show the cloud to be of high mass (⁠|$\sim \, 1.1\times 10^5$| M⊙), low dust temperature (∼ 14.5 K), nearly circular (projected radius ∼ 26 pc), and gravitationally bound with a dense gas fraction of ∼18 per cent and a density profile with a power-law index of ∼−1.5. Comparing its properties with those of nearby molecular clouds, we find that G148.24+00.41 is comparable to the Orion-A molecular cloud in terms of mass, size, and dense gas fraction. From our analyses, we find that the central area of the cloud is actively forming protostars and is moderately fractal with a Q -value of ∼ 0.66. We also find evidence of global mass-segregation with a degree of mass-segregation (ΛMSR) ≈ 3.2. We discuss these results along with the structure and compactness of the cloud, the spatial and temporal distribution of embedded stellar population and their correlation with the cold dust distribution, in the context of high-mass cluster formation. We compare our results with models of star cluster formation, and conclude that the cloud has the potential to form a cluster in the mass range ∼ 2000–3000 M⊙ through dynamical hierarchical collapse and assembly of both gas and stars. The aim of this work is to study structure and gas kinematics in the photodissociation regions (PDRs) around the compact H  ii regions S235 A and S235 C. We observe the [C  ii ], [13C  ii ], and [O  i ] line emission, using SOFIA/upGREAT, and complement them by data of HCO+ and CO. We use the [13C  ii ] line to measure the optical depth of the [C  ii ] emission, and find that the [C  ii ] line profiles are influenced by self-absorption, while the [13C  ii ] line remains unaffected by these effects. Hence, for dense PDRs, [13C  ii ] emission is a better tracer of gas kinematics. The optical depth of the [C  ii ] line is up to 10 in S235 A. We find an expanding motion of the [C  ii ]-emitting layer of the PDRs into the front molecular layer in both regions. Comparison of the gas and dust columns shows that gas components visible neither in the [C  ii ] nor in low- J CO lines may contribute to the total column across S235 A. We test whether the observed properties of the PDRs match the predictions of spherical models of expanding H  ii region + PDR + molecular cloud. Integrated intensities of the [13C  ii ], [C  ii ], and [O  i ] lines are well represented by the model, but the models do not reproduce the double-peaked [C  ii ] line profiles due to an insufficient column density of C+. The model predicts that the [O  i ] line could be a more reliable tracer of gas kinematics, but the foreground self-absorbing material does not allow using it in the considered regions. Aims. We aim to identify bipolar Galactic H II regions and to understand their parental cloud structures, morphologies, evolution, and impact on the formation of new generations of stars. Methods. We use the Spitzer-GLIMPSE, Spitzer-MIPSGAL, and Herschel-Hi-GAL surveys to identify bipolar H II regions and to examine their morphologies. We search for their exciting star(s) using NIR data from the 2MASS, UKIDSS, and VISTA surveys. Massive molecular clumps are detected near these bipolar nebulae, and we estimate their temperatures, column densities, masses, and densities. We locate Class 0/I young stellar objects (YSOs) in their vicinities using the Spitzer and Herschel-PACS emission. Results. Numerical simulations suggest bipolar H II regions form and evolve in a two-dimensional flat- or sheet-like molecular cloud. We identified 16 bipolar nebulae in a zone of the Galactic plane between ℓ ± 60° and |b| < 1°. This small number, when compared with the 1377 bubble H II regions in the same area, suggests that most H II regions form and evolve in a three-dimensional medium. We present the catalogue of the 16 bipolar nebulae and a detailed investigation for six of these. Our results suggest that these regions formed in dense and flat structures that contain filaments. We find that bipolar H II regions have massive clumps in their surroundings. The most compact and massive clumps are always located at the waist of the bipolar nebula, adjacent to the ionised gas. These massive clumps are dense, with a mean density in the range of 105 cm−3 to several 106 cm−3 in their centres. Luminous Class 0/I sources of several thousand solar luminosities, many of which have associated maser emission, are embedded inside these clumps. We suggest that most, if not all, massive 0/I YSO formation has probably been triggered by the expansion of the central bipolar nebula, but the processes involved are still unknown. Aims. This work aims to improve the current understanding of the interaction between Hii regions and turbulent molecular clouds.We propose a new method to determine the age of a large sample of OB associations by investigating the development of their associated Hii regions in the surrounding turbulent medium. Methods. Using analytical solutions, one-dimensional (1D), and three-dimensional (3D) simulations, we constrained the expansion of the ionized bubble depending on the turbulence level of the parent molecular cloud. A grid of 1D simulations was then computed in order to build isochrone curves for Hii regions in a pressure–size diagram. This grid of models allowed us to date a large sample of OB associations that we obtained from the Hii Region Discovery Survey (HRDS). Results. Analytical solutions and numerical simulations showed that the expansion of Hii regions is slowed down by the turbulence up to the point where the pressure of the ionized gas is in a quasi-equilibrium with the turbulent ram pressure. Based on this result, we built a grid of 1D models of the expansion of Hii regions in a profile based on Larson’s laws. We take the 3D turbulence into account with an effective 1D temperature profile. The ages estimated by the isochrones of this grid agree well with literature values of well known regions such as Rosette, RCW 36, RCW 79, and M16. We thus propose that this method can be used to find ages of young OB associations through the Galaxy and also in nearby extra-galactic sources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BSTRACT The aim of this paper is to present the results of photometric investigations of the central cluster of the W5 E H ii region as well as a follow-up study of the triggered star formation in and around bright-rimmed clouds (BRCs). We have carried out wide-field UBVIC and deep VIC photometry of the W5 E H ii region. A distance of ∼2.1 kpc and a mean age of ∼1.3 Myr have been obtained for the central cluster. The young stellar objects (YSOs) associated with the region are identified on the basis of near-infrared and mid-infrared observations. We confirmed our earlier results that the average age of the YSOs lying on/inside the rim is younger than those lying outside the rim. The global distribution of the YSOs shows an aligned distribution from the ionizing source to the BRCs. These facts indicate that a series of radiation-driven implosion processes proceeded from near the central ionizing source towards the periphery of the W5 E H ii region. We found that, in general, the age distributions of the Class II and Class III sources are the same. This result is apparently in contradiction to the conclusion by Bertout, Siess & Cabrit and Chauhan et al. that classical T Tauri stars evolve to weak-line T Tauri stars. The initial mass function of the central cluster region in the mass range 0.4 ≤ M/M⊙≤ 30 can be represented by Γ=−1.29 ± 0.04. The cumulative mass functions indicate that in the mass range 0.2 ≤ M/M⊙≤ 0.8, the cluster region and BRC NW have more low-mass YSOs compared to BRCs 13 and 14. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a multiwavelength study of the Galactic H II region Sh2-297, located in the Canis Major OB1 complex. Optical spectroscopic observations are used to constrain the spectral type of ionizing star HD 53623 as B0V. The classical nature of this H II region is affirmed by the low values of electron density and emission measure, which are calculated to be 756 cm–3 and 9.15 × 105 cm–6 pc using the radio continuum observations at 610 and 1280 MHz, and Very Large Array archival data at 1420 MHz. To understand local star formation, we identified the young stellar object (YSO) candidates in a region of area ∼7.′5 × 7.′5 centered on Sh2-297 using grism slitless spectroscopy (to identify the Hα emission line stars), and near infrared (NIR) observations. NIR YSO candidates are further classified into various evolutionary stages using color-color and color-magnitude (CM) diagrams, giving 50 red sources (H – K > 0.6) and 26 Class II-like sources. The mass and age range of the YSOs are estimated to be ∼0.1-2 M☼ and 0.5-2 Myr using optical (V/V–I) and NIR (J/J–H) CM diagrams. The mean age of the YSOs is found to be ∼1 Myr, which is of the order of dynamical age of 1.07 Myr of the H II region. Using the estimated range of visual extinction (1.1-25 mag) from literature and NIR data for the region, spectral energy distribution models have been implemented for selected YSOs which show masses and ages to be consistent with estimated values. The spatial distribution of YSOs shows an evolutionary sequence, suggesting triggered star formation in the region. The star formation seems to have propagated from the ionizing star toward the cold dark cloud LDN1657A located west of Sh2-297. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present observational data for two main components (S255IR and S255N) of the S255 high mass star-forming region in continuum and molecular lines obtained at 1.3 mm and 1.1 mm with the Submillimeter Array (SMA), at 1.3 cm with the Very Large Array, and at 23 and 50 cm with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope. The angular resolution was from ∼2″ to ∼5″ for all instruments. With the SMA we detected a total of about 50 spectral lines of 20 different molecules (including isotopologues). About half of the lines and half of the species (in particular N2H+, SiO, C34S, DCN, DNC, DCO+, HC3N, H2CO, H2CS, SO2) have not been previously reported in S255IR and partly in S255N at high angular resolution. Our data reveal several new clumps in the S255IR and S255N areas through their millimeter wave continuum emission. Masses of these clumps are estimated at a few solar masses. The line widths greatly exceed expected thermal widths. These clumps have practically no association with NIR or radio continuum sources, implying a very early stage of evolution. At the same time, our SiO data indicate the presence of high-velocity outflows related to some of these clumps. In some cases, strong molecular emission at velocities of the quiescent gas has no detectable counterpart in the continuum. We discuss the main features of the distribution of NH3, N2H+, and deuterated molecules.
