We present a catalogue of dense cores and filaments in a |$3.8^\circ \times 2.4^\circ$| field around the TMC1 region of the Taurus molecular cloud. The catalogue was created using photometric data from the Herschel SPIRE and PACS instruments in the 70, 160, 250, 350, and 500 μ m continuum bands. Extended structure in the region was reconstructed from a Herschel column density map. Power spectra and probability density functions (PDFs) of this structure are presented. The PDF splits into lognormal and power-law forms, with the high-density power-law component associated primarily with the central part of TMC1. The total mass in the mapped region is 2000 M |$_\odot$|⁠ , of which 34 per cent is above an extinction of |$A_V\sim 3$| mag – a level that appears as a break in the PDF and as the minimum column density at which dense cores are found. A total of 35 dense filaments were extracted from the column density map. These have a typical full width at half-maximum (FWHM) width of 0.07 pc, but the TMC1 filament itself has a mean FWHM of |$\sim 0.13$| pc. The thermally supercritical filaments in the region are aligned orthogonal to the prevailing magnetic field direction. Derived properties for the supercritical TMC1 filament support the scenario of it being relatively young. A catalogue of 44 robust and candidate prestellar cores is created and is assessed to be complete down to 0.1 M |$_\odot$|⁠. The combined prestellar core mass function for the TMC1 and L1495 regions is well fit by a single lognormal distribution and is comparable to the standard initial mass function. We present a catalogue of prestellar and starless cores within the Corona Australis molecular cloud using photometric data from the Herschel Space Observatory. At a distance of d ~ 130 pc, Corona Australis is one of the closest star-forming regions. Herschel has taken multi-wavelength data of Corona Australis with both the Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (SPIRE) and the Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS) photometric cameras in a parallel mode with wavelengths in the range 70–500 μm. A complete sample of starless and prestellar cores and embedded protostars is identified. Other results from the Herschel Gould Belt Survey have shown spatial correlation between the distribution of dense cores and the filamentary structure within the molecular clouds. We go further and show correlations between the properties of these cores and their spatial distribution within the clouds, with a particular focus on the mass distribution of the dense cores with respect to their filamentary proximity. We find that only lower-mass starless cores form away from filaments, while all of the higher-mass prestellar cores form in close proximity to or directly on the filamentary structure. This result supports the paradigm that prestellar cores mostly form on filaments. We analyse the mass distribution across the molecular cloud, finding evidence that the region around the Coronet appears to be at a more dynamically advanced evolutionary stage in comparison to the rest of the clumps within the cloud. We present observations of the Cepheus Flare obtained as part of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) Gould Belt Legacy Survey (GBLS) with the SCUBA-2 instrument. We produce a catalogue of sources found by SCUBA-2, and separate these into starless cores and protostars. We determine masses and densities for each of our sources, using source temperatures determined by the Herschel Gould Belt Survey. We compare the properties of starless cores in four different molecular clouds: L1147/58, L1172/74, L1251 and L1228. We find that the core mass functions for each region typically show shallower-than-Salpeter behaviour. We find that L1147/58 and L1228 have a high ratio of starless cores to Class II protostars, while L1251 and L1174 have a low ratio, consistent with the latter regions being more active sites of current star formation, while the former are forming stars less actively. We determine that if modelled as thermally supported Bonnor-Ebert spheres, most of our cores have stable configurations accessible to them. We estimate the external pressures on our cores using archival 13CO velocity dispersion measurements and find that our cores are typically pressure confined, rather than gravitationally bound. We perform a virial analysis on our cores, and find that they typically cannot be supported against collapse by internal thermal energy alone, due primarily to the measured external pressures. This suggests that the dominant mode of internal support in starless cores in the Cepheus Flare is either non-thermal motions or internal magnetic fields. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a comparison of Submillimetre Common User Bolometer Array-2 (SCUBA-2) 850-μm and Herschel 70–500-μm observations of the L1495 filament in the Taurus Molecular Cloud with the goal of characterizing the SCUBA-2 Gould Belt Survey (GBS) data set. We identify and characterize starless cores in three data sets: SCUBA-2 850-μm, Herschel 250-μm, and Herschel 250-μm spatially filtered to mimic the SCUBA-2 data. SCUBA-2 detects only the highest-surface-brightness sources, principally detecting protostellar sources and starless cores embedded in filaments, while Herschel is sensitive to most of the cloud structure, including extended low-surface-brightness emission. Herschel detects considerably more sources than SCUBA-2 even after spatial filtering. We investigate which properties of a starless core detected by Herschel determine its detectability by SCUBA-2, and find that they are the core's temperature and column density (for given dust properties). For similar-temperature cores, such as those seen in L1495, the surface brightnesses of the cores are determined by their column densities, with the highest-column-density cores being detected by SCUBA-2. For roughly spherical geometries, column density corresponds to volume density, and so SCUBA-2 selects the densest cores from a population at a given temperature. This selection effect, which we quantify as a function of distance, makes SCUBA-2 ideal for identifying those cores in Herschel catalogues that are closest to forming stars. We present a catalogue of dense cores in a ~4° ? 2° field of the Taurus star-forming region, inclusive of the L1495 cloud, derived from Herschel SPIRE and PACS observations in the 70 µm, 160 µm, 250 µm, 350 µm, and 500 µm continuum bands. Estimates of mean dust temperature and total mass are derived using modified blackbody fits to the spectral energy distributions. We detect 525 starless cores of which ~10-20 per cent are gravitationally bound and therefore presumably prestellar. Our census of unbound objects is ~85 per cent complete for M > 0.015M☉ in low-density regions (AV ≲ 5 mag), while the bound (prestellar) subset is ~85 per cent complete for M > 0.1M☉ overall. The prestellar core mass function (CMF) is consistent with lognormal form, resembling the stellar system initial mass function, as has been reported previously. All of the inferred prestellar cores lie on filamentary structures whose column densities exceed the expected threshold for filamentary collapse, in agreement with previous reports. Unlike the prestellar CMF, the unbound starless CMF is not lognormal, but instead is consistent with a power-law form below 0.3M☉ and shows no evidence for a low-mass turnover. It resembles previously reported mass distributions for CO clumps at low masses (M ≲ 0.3M☉). The volume density PDF, however, is accurately lognormal except at high densities. It is consistent with the effects of self-gravity on magnetized supersonic turbulence. In this paper, we present the first observations of the Ophiuchus molecular cloud performed as part of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) Gould Belt Survey (GBS) with the SCUBA-2 instrument.We demonstratemethods for combining these datawith previous HARP CO, Herschel, and IRAM N2H+ observations in order to accurately quantify the properties of the SCUBA-2 sources in Ophiuchus. We produce a catalogue of all of the sources found by SCUBA-2. We separate these into protostars and starless cores. We list all of the starless cores and perform a full virial analysis, including external pressure. This is the first time that external pressure has been included in this level of detail. We find that the majority of our cores are either bound or virialized. Gravitational energy and external pressure are on average of a similar order of magnitude, but with some variation from region to region. We find that cores in the Oph A region are gravitationally bound prestellar cores, while cores in the Oph C and E regions are pressure-confined. We determine that N2H+ is a good tracer of the bound material of prestellar cores, although we find some evidence for N2H+ freeze-out at the very highest core densities.We find that non-thermal linewidths decrease substantially between the gas traced by C18O and that traced by N2H+, indicating the dissipation of turbulence at higher densities. We find that the critical Bonnor-Ebert stability criterion is not a good indicator of the boundedness of our cores. We detect the pre-brown dwarf candidate Oph B-11 and find a flux density and mass consistent with previous work. We discuss regional variations in the nature of the cores and find further support for our previous hypothesis of a global evolutionary gradient across the cloud from south-west to north-east, indicating sequential star formation across the region. Context. G29.9-60.02 is a high-mass star-forming cloud observed at 70, 160, 250, 350, and 500 μm as part of the Herschel survey of the Galactic plane (Hi-GAL) during the science demonstration phase. Aims. We wish to conduct a far-infrared study of the sources associated with this star-forming region by estimating their physical properties and evolutionary stage, and investigating the clump mass function, the star formation efficiency and rate in the cloud. Methods. We have identified the Hi-GAL sources associated with the cloud, searched for possible counterparts at centimeter and infrared wavelengths, fitted their spectral energy distribution and estimated their physical parameters. Results. A total of 198 sources have been detected in all 5 Hi-GAL bands, 117 of which are associated with 24 μm emission and 87 of which are not associated with 24 μm emission. We called the former sources 24 μm-bright and the latter ones 24 μm-dark. The [70–160] color of the 24 μm-dark sources is smaller than that of the 24 μm-bright ones. The 24 μm-dark sources have lower Lbol and Lbol/Menv than the 24 μm-bright ones for similar Menv, which suggests that they are in an earlier evolutionary phase. The G29-SFR cloud is associated with 10 NVSS sources and with extended centimeter continuum emission well correlated with the 70 μm emission. Most of the NVSS sources appear to be early B or late O-type stars. The most massive and luminous Hi-GAL sources in the cloud are located close to the G29-UC region, which suggests that there is a privileged area for massive star formation toward the center of the G29-SFR cloud. Almost all the Hi-GAL sources have masses well above the Jeans mass but only 5% have masses above the virial mass, which indicates that most of the sources are stable against gravitational collapse. The sources with Menv > Mvirial and that should be undergoing collapse and forming stars are preferentially located at ≲4' of the G29-UC region, which is the most luminous source in the cloud. The overall SFE of the G29-SFR cloud ranges from 0.7 to 5%, and the SFR ranges from 0.001 to 0.008 M⊙ yr-1, consistent with the values estimated for Galactic Hii regions. The mass spectrum of the sources with masses above 300 M⊙, well above the completeness limit, can be well-fitted with a power law of slope α = 2.15 ± 0.30, consistent with the values obtained for the whole l = 30°, associated with high-mass star formation, and l = 59°, associated with low- to intermediate-mass star formation, Hi-GAL SDP fields. ABSTRACT We have used data taken as part of the Herschel infrared Galactic Plane survey (Hi-GAL) to study 3171 infrared dark cloud (IRDC) candidates that were identified in the mid-IR (8 μm) by Spitzer (we refer to these as ' Spitzer-dark' regions). They all lie in the range l= 300-330° and | b|≤ 1°. Of these, only 1205 were seen in emission in the far-IR (250-500 μm) by Herschel (we call these ' Herschel-bright' clouds). It is predicted that a dense cloud will not only be seen in absorption in the mid-IR, but will also be seen in emission in the far-IR at the longest Herschel wavebands (250-500 μm). If a region is dark at all wavelengths throughout the mid-IR and far-IR, then it is most likely to be simply a region of lower background IR emission (a 'hole in the sky'). Hence, it appears that previous surveys, based on Spitzer and other mid-IR data alone, may have overestimated the total IRDC population by a factor of ∼2. This has implications for estimates of the star formation rate in IRDCs in the Galaxy. We studied the 1205 Herschel-bright IRDCs at 250 μm and found that 972 of them had at least one clearly defined 250- μm peak, indicating that they contained one or more dense cores. Of these, 653 (67 per cent) contained an 8- μm point source somewhere within the cloud, 149 (15 per cent) contained a 24- μm point source but no 8- μm source and 170 (18 per cent) contained no 24- or 8- μm point sources. We present continuum data from the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT), and the multiband imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope, at submillimetre and infrared wavelengths, respectively. We study the Taurus molecular cloud 1 (TMC1) and, in particular, the region of the Taurus Molecular Ring (TMR). In the continuum data, we see no real evidence for a ring, but rather we see one side of it only, appearing as a filament. We name the filament ‘the bull's tail’. The filament is seen in emission at 850, 450 and 160 μm, and in absorption at 70 μm. We compare the data with archive data from the Infrared Astronomical Satellite ( IRAS) at 12, 25, 60, 100 μm, in which the filament is also seen in absorption. We find that the emission from the filament consists of two components: a narrow, cold (∼8 K), central core, and a broader, slightly warmer (∼12 K), shoulder of emission. We use a radiative transfer code to model the filament's appearance, either in emission or absorption, simultaneously at each of the different wavelengths. Our best-fitting model uses a Plummer-like density profile and a homogeneous interstellar dust grain population. Observations have been carried out with the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) of regions of comparatively isolated star formation in molecular cloud cores. Some 52 starless cores were observed, which are molecular cloud cores that do not contain any sign of protostellar activity such as infrared sources or bipolar outflows. These are all therefore candidate pre-stellar cores, which are believed to represent the stage of star formation that precedes the formation of a protostar. Of the 52 cores, 29 were detected at 850 μm at varying levels of signal-to-noise ratio greater than 3σ at peak, while 23 of the cores were observed but not detected. The mean detection lower limit of the data corresponds roughly to an under typical assumptions. The detected cores were split into ‘bright’ cores and ‘intermediate’ cores, depending on their peak flux density at 850 μm. Those with peak 850-μm flux densities greater than 170 mJy beam−1 were designated ‘bright’ cores. Those with peak 850-μm flux densities less than this value were designated ‘intermediate’ cores. This dividing line corresponds to a mean detection limit of 10σ at peak, and an approximate under typical assumptions. Of the 29 detected cores, 13 are found to be bright and 16 are intermediate. The data are combined with our previously published ISO data, and the physical parameters of the cores, such as density and temperature, are calculated. The bright cores are detected with sufficiently high signal-to-noise ratio to allow their structure to be mapped. Radial flux density profiles of these show flattened inner regions and sharp boundaries, consistent with previous observations of pre-stellar cores. Detailed fitting of the bright core radial profiles shows that they are not critical Bonnor–Ebert spheres, in agreement with previous findings. However, we find that intermediate cores, such as B68 (which has previously been claimed to be a Bonnor–Ebert sphere), may in fact be consistent with the Bonnor–Ebert criterion, suggesting perhaps that cores pass through such a phase during their evolution. We also find that the masses of the bright cores have a mean value of approximately the same order as their virial masses. We make rough estimates of core lifetimes based on the statistics of detections and find that the lifetime of a pre-stellar core is roughly , while that of a bright core is . Comparisons with some models that regulate collapse using either magnetic fields or turbulence show that no model can match all of the data. Models that are tuned to fit the total pre-stellar core lifetime do not predict the relative numbers of cores seen at each stage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we present a catalog of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) in the Andromeda (M31) galaxy extracted from the Herschel Exploitation of Local Galaxy Andromeda (HELGA) data set. GMCs are identified from the Herschel maps using a hierarchical source extraction algorithm. We present the results of this new catalog and characterize the spatial distribution and spectral energy properties of its clouds based on the radial dust/gas properties found by Smith et al. A total of 326 GMCs in the mass range 104-107M☼ are identified; their cumulative mass distribution is found to be proportional to M–2.34, in agreement with earlier studies. The GMCs appear to follow the same correlation of cloud mass to LCO observed in the Milky Way. However, comparison between this catalog and interferometry studies also shows that the GMCs are substructured below the Herschel resolution limit, suggesting that we are observing associations of GMCs. Following Gordon et al., we study the spatial structure of M31 by splitting the observed structure into a set of spiral arms and offset rings. We fit radii of 10.3 and 15.5 kpc to the two most prominent rings. We then fit a logarithmic spiral with a pitch angle of 8.°9 to the GMCs not associated with either ring. Last, we comment on the effects of deprojection on our results and investigate the effect different models for M31's inclination will have on the projection of an unperturbed spiral arm system.
