Respirable coal mine dust (RCMD) exposure is one of the utmost health hazards to the mining community causing various health issues, including coal worker pneumoconiosis (CWP). Considering multiple potential sources of RCMD having different physicochemical properties within the same mine suggests a wide range of health impacts that have not yet been studied extensively. In this work, we investigate the toxicity of lab-created RCMD based on different sources: coal seam, rock dust, host floor, and host roof collected from the same mine. Comparative samples obtained from several mines situated in various geographic locations were also assessed. This work quantifies metal leaching in simulated lung fluids and correlates dissolution with in vitro immune responses. Here, dissolution experiments were conducted using two simulated lung fluids; Gamble solution (GS) and artificial lysosomal fluid (ALF). In vitro studies were performed using a lung epithelial cell line (A549) to investigate their immune responses and cell viability. Si and Al are the most dissolved metals, among several other trace metals, such as Fe, Sr, Ba, Pb, etc. RCMD from the coal seam and the rock dust showed the least metal leaching, while the floor and roof samples dissolved the most. Results from in vitro studies showed a prominent effect on cell viability for floor and roof dust samples suggesting high toxicity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Organicacids in the atmosphere are ubiquitous and are often correlatedwith mineral dust aerosol. Heterogeneous chemistry and the uptakeof organic acids on mineral dust particles can potentially alter theproperties of the particle. In this study, heterogeneous uptake andreaction of formic acid, HCOOH, the most abundant carboxylic acidpresent in the atmosphere, on oxide and clays of the most abundantelements, Si and Al, present in the Earth’s crust are investigatedunder dry and humid conditions. In particular, quantitative adsorptionmeasurements using a Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) coupled withspectroscopic studies using Attenuated Total Reflection Fourier TransformInfrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy are combined to allow for both quantificationof the amount of uptake and identification of distinct adsorbed speciesformed on silica, alumina, and kaolinite particle surfaces at 298K. These oxides and clay particles show significant differences inthe extent and speciation of adsorbed HCOOH due to inherent differencesin surface −OH group reactivity. Adsorbed water, controlledby relative humidity, can increase the irreversible uptake of formicacid. Interestingly, the resulting layer of adsorbed formate on theparticle surface decreases the particle hydrophilicity thereby decreasingthe amount of water taken up by the surface as measured by QCM. A number of recent studies have shown that iron dissolution in Fe-containing dust aerosol can be linked to source material (mineral or anthropogenic), mineralogy, and iron speciation. All of these factors need to be incorporated into atmospheric chemistry models if these models are to accurately predict the impact of Fe-containing dusts into open ocean waters. In this report, we combine dissolution measurements along with spectroscopy and microscopy to focus on nanoscale size effects in the dissolution of Fe-containing minerals in low-pH environments and the importance of acid type, including HNO3, H2SO4, and HCl, on dissolution. All of these acids are present in the atmosphere, and dust particles have been shown to be associated with nitrate, sulfate, and/or chloride. These measurements are done under light and dark conditions so as to simulate and distinguish between daytime and nighttime atmospheric chemical processing. Both size (nano- versus micron-sized particles) and anion (nitrate, sulfate, and chloride) are found to play significant roles in the dissolution of α-FeOOH under both light and dark conditions. Over the last several decades, iron has been identified as a limiting nutrient in about half of the world's oceans. Its most significant source is identified as deposited iron-containing mineral dust that has been processed during atmospheric transportation. The current work focuses on chemical and photochemical processing of iron-containing mineral dust particles in the presence of nitric acid and an organic pollutant dimethyl sulfide under atmospherically relevant conditions. More importantly, ilmenite (FeTiO3) is evaluated as a proxy for the iron-containing mineral dust. The presence of titanium in its lattice structure provides higher complexity to mimic mineral dust, yet it is simple enough to study reaction pathways and mechanisms. Here, spectroscopic methods are combined with dissolution measurements to investigate atmospheric processing of iron in mineral dust, with specific focus on particle mineralogy, particle size and their environmental conditions (i.e., pH and solar flux). Our results indicate that the presence of titanium elemental composition enhances iron dissolution from mineral dust, at least by 2-fold comparison with its nontitanium-containing counterparts. The extent of iron dissolution and speciation is further influenced by the above factors. Abstract A large part of oceanic biological production is limited by the scarcity of dissolved iron. Mineral dust aerosol, processed under acidic atmospheric conditions, is the primary natural source of bioavailable iron to oceanic life. However, synergistic and antagonistic effects of non-Fe-containing minerals on atmospheric processing of Fe-containing minerals and Fe solubilization are poorly understood. The current study focuses on mineralogical influences of non-Fe-bearing semiconductor minerals, such as titanium dioxide (TiO 2), on the dissolution of iron in selected natural mineral dust aerosols under atmospherically relevant conditions. Further, the role of elevated Ti concentrations in dust is evaluated using magnetite, a proxy for Fe(II) containing minerals, under both dark and light conditions. Our results highlight that relatively higher Ti:Fe ratios, regardless of their total Fe content, enhances the total iron dissolution in mineral dust aerosols as well as in magnetite. Moreover, elevated Ti percentages also yield high Fe(II) fractions in mineral dust systems under dark conditions. Upon irradiation however, dissolved Fe(II) is suppressed by high Ti levels due to the involvement of photochemical redox cycling reactions with hydroxyl radicals (•OH). These synergistic and antagonistic effects of Ti are further evaluated by altering the chemical composition of natural dusts with artificially added anatase (TiO 2) and synthetic amorphous titania. The current study reveals important mineralogical controls by non-Fe-bearing minerals on dust iron dissolution to better understand global iron mobilization. Under acidic atmospheric conditions, iron leached from atmospheric mineral dust may influence the distribution of bioavailable iron at a global scale. However, the effects of non-Fe-containing minerals on iron dissolution remain unknown. This work describes metal-metal synergistic and antagonistic effects on iron dissolution that go beyond aggregation and ionic strength effects in mineral dust mixtures. In this study, we investigated iron mobilization by proton-promoted dissolution in natural mineral dust samples from the Kalahari Desert (SZ1) and Australian Red Dawn event (RO), along with one iron oxide proxy, hematite. The total iron dissolution in natural dust samples highly corresponds with the respective amount of Ti, rather than their particle sizes or Fe contents. The dust sample with high Ti content, SZ1, also showed a higher fraction of dissolved Fe(II), under dark conditions. These observations are in good agreement with the dissolution data for hematite artificially mixed with metal oxides. Total iron dissolution in hematite, mixed with TiO 2 , is 1.5- and 2-fold higher compared to that of just hematite under dark and light conditions, respectively. However, dissolution of hematite is suppressed when mixed with Al 2 O 3 and CaO. Under dark conditions, furthermore, dissolved Fe(II) fraction is enhanced for hematite when mixed with TiO 2 compared to that of other mixtures or hematite alone. Yet, dissolved Fe(II) is lower in hematite mixed with TiO 2 under light conditions compared to that of hematite alone, suggesting photo-oxidation of Fe(II) by reactive oxygen species, such as OH radicals.
