The topographic fabric of the rift valley floor has been analyzed using the multibeam echosounder data obtained by the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) Abyss at two locations over a short segment of the slow-spreading Central Indian Ridge between 10°18′ and 10°57′S. The region is influenced by hydrothermal venting in the near vicinity. Two AUV dives D51 and D52 were performed over this segment at two locations that are 30 km apart and covered 5 km2 and 8 km2 seafloor area, respectively. The dive D51 covered the off-axis part of the rift valley floor in the middle part of the segment, and the dive D52 is located near to the non-transform discontinuity that covered the terminal part of an oceanic core complex (OCC). High-resolution seafloor topography as revealed by the AUV-mounted multibeam echosounder system brought out several micro-bathymetric fabric features such as a lava lake, a cratered volcano, an OCC, and the foot wall volcanic complex at the distal part of the OCC. The valley floor imaged in the D51 is marked by a lava flow encompassing an area of 1 km2 and a volcano in the NE corner. The volcano has a diameter of about 800 m with an elevation of about 200 m from the adjacent seafloor, and the partially mapped volcano crater has a relief of about 60 m. A prominent linear fissure running parallel to the ridge axis has been identified; this feature joins with the volcano. Analysis of AUV-mounted CTD data indicated three distinct temperature spikes ranging 0.009 to 0.013 °C in the region of dive D51. The observed temperature spikes appear to be related to the linear fissure on the seafloor and probably represent leaky venting of fluids from the fissure. With respect to the dive D52, the foot wall volcanic features associated with the OCC are prominent. The volcanic seafloor feature covered an area of 3.45 km2 and is conspicuous with rugged topographic fabric at the base of the OCC. These inferences and the morphotectonics of the rift valley floor as revealed by the AUV data suggest moderate hydrothermal venting in this segment of the slow-spreading Central Indian Ridge. Published models for the plate tectonic evolution of the Western Indian Ocean suggest that the Southern Mascarene Basin opened by oceanic crustal accretion between the continental margins of southwestern India and southeastern Madagascar. However, with the cessation of the Mascarene Basin spreading centre followed by a ridge jump resulting in the opening of the Carlsberg Ridge, almost all the traces of India-Madagascar divergence were carved away from the Indian Plate and attached to the African Plate. According to some recent studies, the Chain-Kairali Escarpment, a prominent feature on the southwestern continental margin of India, is possibly the only trace of India-Madagascar divergence that remained on the Indian Plate. But the exact conjugate correspondence of this feature on the Madagascar side is uncertain. Published plate tectonic reconstructions imply that the Vishnu Fracture Zone on the Indian side and the Mauritius Fracture Zone on the Madagascar side are aligned at chron C22ny (∼49.04 Ma). Based on the near collinearity of gravity anomaly trends, the Chain-Kairali Escarpment appears to be the landward extension of the Vishnu FZ. However, at chron C34ny (∼83.0 Ma), the Chain-Kairali Escarpment was in close proximity to the incipient Mahanoro Fracture Zone. In this study we investigate this incompatibility, using an up-to-date compilation of the tectonic elements from the conjugate regions of India and Madagascar and the latest available rotation parameters that describe India-Madagascar separation through a direct India-Seychelles-Madagascar plate circuit. Our revised plate reconstruction model suggests that the Chain-Kairali Escarpment was formed due to the strike-slip motion between the southeast coast of Madagascar and the then southwest coast of India during the initial stages of India-Madagascar breakup. The migration of the Chain-Kairali Escarpment from the proximity of the Mahanoro FZ and aligning with the Vishnu FZ was the result of several successive events. The first among those events was asymmetric crustal accretion in the Mascarene Basin due to ridge propagation, between chrons C34ny (83.0 Ma) to C33ny (∼73.62 Ma). The Chain-Kairali Escarpment and associated crustal weak zones offshore India appear to have facilitated subsequent initiation of the Mauritius FZ and its conjugate Vishnu FZ during a plate reorganization at about chron C33ny (∼73.62 Ma). The cessation of spreading in the Mascarene Basin and development of full extent of the Carlsberg Ridge, shortly after chron C27ny (60.92 Ma), resulted in the initiation of a long transform fault, coinciding with the Vishnu FZ, which connected the Carlsberg Ridge with the spreading centre of the Madagascar Basin. Therefore, the Vishnu FZ and the Chain-Kairali Escarpment are two independent features created during different episodes of evolution of the Western Indian Ocean and the Chain-Kairali Escarpment is not a landward extension of the Vishnu FZ. Abstract: The Deccan Traps, one of the best known examples of rapid flood basalt, are considered as marking of the inception of a mantle plume on the Indian continental lithosphere. Their emplacement may be associated with the continental break-up of India and the Seychelles block and later formation of a new spreading centre, the Carlsberg Ridge, while spreading progressively ceased in the Mascarene Basin. Whether rifting, continental break-up, and seafloor spreading predated or were the consequence of the Deccan Traps emplacement is still a matter of debate. This issue is further complicated by the presence of a continental sliver, the Laxmi Ridge, and large basins lying landward of the Laxmi Ridge, such as the Laxmi and Gop basins, where nature of the crust is still ambiguous. The present study attempts to decipher the tectonic setting and the imprints of plume–ridge interaction in the Gop Basin, where the crust has been interpreted as either volcanic-intruded thinned continental crust or oceanic crust formed by a now-extinct spreading centre. Based on interpretation of an updated compilation of marine geophysical data, the present study supports the oceanic nature of the crust underlying the Gop Basin and proposes the Palitana Ridge as the extinct spreading centre in this region. The prominent but short sequence of fairly linear magnetic anomalies in the Gop Basin does not allow a unique identification; it can be reasonably explained either as A31r–A25r (∼69.3–56.4 Ma) or as A29r–A25r (∼64.8–56.4 Ma) sequence. The variations of the spreading rates assumed by both these models suggest that spreading in the Gop Basin significantly slowed around 65 Ma, contemporaneous with the magmatic outburst of the Reunion plume on the adjacent western Indian mainland. Subsequently, the Gop Basin spreading centre was waning whereas a new spreading centre was developing further south, close to the (relatively) southward migrating plume. In this last stage, the Gop Basin spreading centre was associated with an abundant magmatism, probably supplied from the plume region. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
