This article considers the main stages of synthesis Ti3SiC2 and Ti3AlC2 and describes in detail the methods of obtaining these materials. Ceramic materials based on B4C–SiC are obtained by using the method of hot slip casting followed by reaction sintering (impregnation with liquid silicon). Composite ceramic samples are characterized by low density and porosity, and have strong mechanical characteristics. The microstructure of the obtained material is studied, and the uniformity of the distribution of boron carbide and silicon carbide particles in the structure of ceramic materials is demonstrated. A diamond – silicon carbide composite material has been obtained. The reaction-diffusion mechanism of Turing sintering is investigated. The conditions for the growth of SiC grains on diamond particles during formation of the composite are shown. The process of graphitization of diamond particles during reaction sintering has been investigated. The mechanical characteristics of the diamond – silicon carbide composite have been studied. Ti3SiC2 was synthesized by hot pressing at 1400°С for 15 and 30 min at a pressure of 30 MPa from powder mixtures, mainly from Ti/Si/TiC and Ti/TiSi2/TiC. The amount of the Ti3SiC2 phase synthesized from these mixtures was 94.0 and 95.9 vol %, respectively (1400°С, 30 min). The Ti3SiC2 phase crystallized as elongated grains. The effect of the hot pressing time on the formation of the Ti3SiC2 phase from the starting Ti/Si/TiC powders was determined. The final products contained titanium carbide and a small amount of silicon carbide as intermediate phases (for composites containing the starting silicon carbide powders). An excess of silicon leads to the formation of the largest amount of the Ti3SiC2 phase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper offers a review of literature published over the past 15 years concerning liquid-phase sintering of silicon carbide materials with various sintering activating additives. The microstructure and specifics of its formation have been investigated. The dependences of crack resistance, strength, and hardness on the material structure were studied. The free liquid phase sintering method was applied to obtain dense (relative density 99.5%) materials based on silicon carbide. A eutectic mixture of MgO, Y2O3 and Al2O3 of the composition corresponding to the coexisting garnet - spinel phase curve was used as the sintering agent. In the preparation of the charge powders, the method of chemical deposition from salt solutions was used, that produced eutectic composition oxides uniformly distributed on the silicon carbide powder particles. The materials produced show good mechanical properties: elastic strain energy 410 GPa, flexural strength 680 MPa, KIc = 6.0 MPa·m1/2, HV 21.5 GPa, the values of which are close to the corresponding indices for the hot-pressed carbide-silicon materials.
